Not "Mexican" food per our waitress....! We have been eating Mexican food for a very very long time (lived in AZ for 25+ years). I was stymied at some of the descriptions of the food items on the menu...and this is when she told me it's more of a "Latin fusion" menu. Hmmm. Pros: My husband's tacos -Carnitas -were very meaty and good. An Extra huge bowl of chips with two tiny salsas were also very tasty. cons: First time ever I ordered a hamburger in a Latin restaurant so maybe I need to never do that again. She asked me how I would like it cooked, I indicated medium rare. See the photo... it came out like a work of art! But that is where the fun ended, since the meat was over cooked and overspiced tasting more like Mexican meatloaf made from tough old beef. yuk. it had many strange things piled on it including a chunk of pork belly that was hard to chew and very salty. Oh well live and learn. I wanted sweet potato fries instead of regular fries and was up charged $2 for that privilege... making my burger a total of $15, very pricey for something I did not enjoy but yes I did eat it because I was hungry. The waitress was very friendly and the atmosphere out on the front porch was good. I don't think I will be eating here again however due to the prices and the strangeness of the menu. Suggestion to management might be to reduce the amount of chips you give to 2 people... use the cost savings to lower your prices on your menu a bit? Service was horrible. Took an hour to get our meal and 20 mins for my drink. It was not super busy so seemed odd. The food was less than good. The flying fish tacos were so bad I didn't eat them and the waitress did not offer to take them off our bill. They tasted like the fish was spoiled. The plantains were horrible as well. They were mushy and this is not how they should have been. My skinny margarita tasted just like tequila and soda water no hint of margarita at all. The whole experience was poor. The highlight of this place for me has to be their chorizo dip, steak taco and their churros that come with melted chocolate on the side. This was my second visit to this place, and let me just say, I thought I liked it way more than I actually did, hence the second visit. This visit was on a Wednesday night around 9pm. The place was actually quite a bit more busy than I could have expected, which I thought was weird. Anyway, it was about a 20 minute wait for us to get seated, which they mentioned at the beginning, so not a big deal. We sat outside, and we sat at the table for about 10-12 minutes without someone from the waitstaff coming by at all - no water, no nothing. When the waitress finally did come by, she was nice and helpful, but she was definitely rushed, which is kind of annoying. We order, and the food comes out in spurts, kind of. The complimentary chips and salsa came out first, and then the two appetizers came out at two different times (we ordered everything at once because who was to say when our waitress would come back again). The queso dip was lackluster at best, and it was lukewarm when it came out, which was kind of gross and annoying, but by the time the waitress came back, it was too late because we were hungry. Their version of Elote (the grilled Spanish style corn) was probably easily the best thing I have eaten here. We both ordered two different tacos, for a total of 4 different tacos (which I believe were the same tacos that we ordered on the first trip here a couple of years ago). My blackened shrimp taco was alright, but some of the shrimp were so salty that I couldn't even finish the taco. I made it halfway through the fish taco before I had to stop because the underside of the fish was SO SOGGY and disgusting that I just couldn't stomach it. The other tacos were not enjoyed, either, with the major complaint that they were too salty. Something I noticed that is consistent about this place, even after speaking with a friend that's been here many times, is that their food is just EXTREMELY salty. The corn was the least salty, and even then, I think it just didn't seem too salty because everything else had an entire shaker of salt in it. Overall, the service is ALRIGHT, and the food is also ALRIGHT, but make sure you ask for plenty of water, because you're going to be THIRSTY from the abundance of salt. read more

I've had great tacos and good tacos. This place falls into the good category. The place itself is cool and while their guacamole is made at the table they can't do that if you're sitting outdoors due to some health regulation. The guac is really good I have to say... as are the churros. I had ordered a fish taco, buttermilk chicken and a crispy pork. The outdoor tables are a little tiny to seat 5 probably because the table space is limited and the platters are sort of large for whatever you're ordering. I ordered 3 tacos and received a rectangular platter and a side plate for the 3rd taco. I was thinking why didn't they just turn the "/VV\" taco holder upside down so it could hold all 3? They have a pretty extensive list of tequilas to choose from ranging from 9 dollars to 50 dollars for some of the aged etc. Crazy awesome that is... still I thought the best items were the guac they couldn't make at the table which came in a mortar type container that was smooth not rigid and the churros. Sadly the tacos for me were just meh. They were stuffed quite generously though which made them sort of hard to eat. I prefer double layered corn tortillas over flour any day. High quality, good service, premium location, and a dog friendly patio. We've brought our pup here twice and dined on the nicely decked out patio. Parking is tight in the area but it appears that they have "complimentary valet parking" in the lot by the restaurant. They've monopolized about half the lot - I guess it's good so that beachers aren't overtaking spots of restaurant goers, but annoying cause I'd rather just park my own car. Food - awesome tacos and quac! Really the guac is awesome! We have ordered a side (like $1 or 2) both times and it was fantastic. They also can do a side of queso too. Freshly made chips, seasoned, are brought out for the table with red and green salsa. I really appreciate good chips, a simple but easy way to show your attention to detail is how high of quality your freebies are. They have entrees but we've ordered tacos both times. If you like fish, you must try the flying fish and blacked shrimp. If you like beef, get the beef taco - soooooooo tender and savory! Seriously these tacos are great. We tried the toastadas last visit, stuffed with chorizo and potato and fried to perfection - heavy, but very good. AND to top it all off they're located by the beach! Unfortunately we weren't impressed with the Flying Iguana after waiting an hour for a table late last Saturday night. There is a lot of promise here, from the renovations to the menu. But get past the crowds and the $8-$12 margaritas and the Iguana needs some refining. For one, the "table side guac" translated to dropping off a fresh bowl of guac at our table, despite our waiter's verbal description of how they would make it in front of us (and seeing the cart at other tables). He apologized when we asked, saying there was too many people standing to bring the cart to our table. Weak. Other notes...Salsas weren't great individually but we mixed the red & green together and enjoyed the result. The drinks were better than the food. Our tacos were just okay. My request for a corn tortilla was granted, but it fell apart as soon as I tried to pick it up and I had to fork-n-knife it. By the end, we were both left wishing we had gone to the Lu. My friend finally was able to drag me to this place after much hyping about how good the tacos were. I had my taco places that I wanted to stick to but deep down inside I knew I needed more options. So we decided to check it out for Sunday dinner... We picked the best day and time to go, while we're under a thunderstorm/tornado watch haha. It was bad but when we got there we were able to find parking relatively easy and right in front of the restaurant. We got inside and the place was packed. There was a small wait, about 20 mins so we decided to sit at the bar and order margaritas. My friend ordered a Watermelon Bliss: tequila, agave nectar, watermelon, cucumber, lime, and lemon. I'm not a big fan of watermelon but I liked it. I ordered the Floral Arrangement: St. Germain Elderflower, agave nectar, fresh lime, sour mix, and tequila with an edible hibiscus flower in the bottom. I really liked this drink and I should have ordered another one but I needed to save room for food. Our table was ready so we went back to the hostess stand and the hostess took us to our table. The chairs are really unique and I like that the leather seat cradles your butt haha. We went over and over the menu and decided we'd share an appetizer, order our own tacos, and share an entree. Good plan. For the appetizer, we got the Sweet Corn Tamale Cakes. We'd seen a picture of it before on Facebook and they looked heavenly. They are corn cakes with smoked salmon, crema, chives, and ancho chile sauce. I love smoked salmon and they were delicious. Next, were our tacos. I ordered one of the specials, the Junkyard Taco which has grilled chicken, roasted potato, queso sauce, cabbage, charred corn, flaming iguana sauce all up in it. This was a stuffed taco and I love it. Everything was perfect and the iguana sauce had some kick to it. A sip of my margarita put out the flames and I continued. I also ordered the Anticucho Steak Taco which had grilled onions, a green chili sauce called aji verde, fresno chile, pepitas or pumpkin seeds. This taco I think was better than the junkyard taco as far as what you would expect from a taco. The tender steak, the onions grilled just right, the sauces added the right amount of flavor and spice. The pepitas threw me off but it paired perfectly with everything else. My friend got the Crispy Pork Belly Taco which has rum n' coke glaze, watermelon, cotija cheese, and pickled onion. She liked it a lot. On to the entree! We ordered their special for the night, the Chili Dusted Diver Sea Scallops with white and purple potatoes, squash, zucchini and some awesome sauce (I forgot was it was but it was awesome). Those scallops tho! They were cooked just right and they melted in your mouth. They had to be the best scallops I've EVER had in Jax. We had no room for dessert but had room for at least one more drink. My friend was absolutely right about this place and we should have came sooner. Definitely a fan. read more

Margaritas are really good at Flying Iguana. I'm a guac snob and I don't usually order guacamole at most restaurants but I love the guacamole at Flying Iguana. Best tacos and margaritas! This is one of my favorite spots in town and try to go whenever I can. Their tacos are not just your typical tacos, they are unique and all pretty delicious. And their margaritas are some of the best in town and consistently get voted some of the best in Jax. The atmosphere is fun and the staff are all friendly. They get pretty crowded on the weekends so be prepared to wait but trust me it's well worth it! I just found out they also offer free valet parking so you don't have to worry about scouring for one. I definitely recommend trying them out. In my opinion they blow the competition out of the water. Went there on Valentines day, we were told there would be about an hour wait for a party of two, but we ended up waiting for only 15-20 minutes of which we decided to spend at their bar. :). Bar tenders were very nice and friendly. The food was just "OK" to me. I ordered 3 different tacos and they were all mediocre at best, no wow factor. I usually like spicy food but I found the Grilled Shrimp taco to be VERY spicy. The Crispy pork belly taco seemed like it only had the fat in the pork belly, sweet and very greasy... it needed to have some kind of real meat in it. Carnitas taco was pretty good-- probably my favorite among the three. Their guacamole dip was very good.... probably the highlight of our meal. Came in for a Sunday brunch and some drinks. Sat at the bar and was greeted and taken care of immediately. They have a Sunday Brunch menu which lasts a few hours and is actually pretty cheap for the amount of tasty food they serve. I went with the "Frenchilada," which was mouthwatering. The dish was made up of three crepes filled with cheese and smoked chicken topped off with chile sauce, black beans, and a house salad. It was an appetizing plate. I visited the Iguana with several other friends on a busy Saturday evening. They do not take reservations, so we put our name in and waited to be seated. It took awhile, and by the time we were seated there was a good hour's wait for a table. The ambiance in the restaurant is modern. It is nicely decorated and the seating isn't too cramped. The artwork above the bar is very eye catching. It's very busy and very loud. Don't plan on having any important conversations here. You will probably spend half the dinner yelling things like, "what??" And "I didn't hear you!" The service was...all right. The waitress apparently missed my boyfriend yelling, "no salt" on his margarita, although she repeated it back to us. When we explained to the person delivering the drink (WITH salt) we ordered that it should have been with no salt, she gave us some pretty nasty looks and I had to remind our waitress what was ordered in order to get it remedied. To our waitresses defense, it was super loud and she may have just not heard my boyfriend yelling across the table, or may have forgotten in the distance it took to get from our table to the ordering station, since everyone in there was pretty much screaming at each other in order to be heard and it was highly distracting. The empanadas were fantastic. I highly recommend ordering them and sharing. The drinks are also awesome. The floral arrangement was refreshing and there was an edible flower at the bottom. *warning-don't look at the flower before you eat it. It sort of resembles a smooshed up bug and nobody needs that image before chomping down. One thing I really hate is soggy tacos that drip liquid when I pick them up. That's what I got with my tacos, which made for a pretty gross mess the longer they sat there. I did like the taste of my tacos-I got the pork belly and the Baja fish taco-but I hated that they were so soggy. My boyfriend had the dirty south taco, the blackened shrimp, and the five spice short ribs. He experienced the same thing. The blackened shrimp taco was fine but the other two were not good and neither one of us was willing to finish eating them or take them home. I would come back here for apps and drinks when it isn't so busy, but I probably won't be making any special weekend trips to eat soggy tacos and have meaningless screaming matches with my friends anytime soon. GET THE GUACAMOLE! Sorry- In case you didn't read the rest of my review- I did not want you to miss out on the guacamole. I would have taken a picture of it but my table devoured it immediately upon arrival. A great little spot on Atlantic Beach- and one of the only spots you can sit outside and be on the sunny side during the sunset (unfortunately you lose the beach view- but the sun feels great). The chips and salsa they bring you are almost as good as the guacamole. I was very impressed with the flavorings. The sangria had a bit of a spice kick to it- I had never tasted one quite like it- but I enjoyed it! It's mostly a la carte tacos- a couple salads and apps. Not an extensive menu- but it doesn't need it. They do tacos- and they do them well. I had the Achiote Chicken taco & the Farm-to-Taco (veggie taco)- both delicious and well stuffed. They serve the tacos in a nifty taco holder that keeps them together in between bites. I had my tacos prepared on soft corn tortillas and I'm not sure what brand they use- but they did not fall apart like usual corn tortillas. They held up quite well! I loved this place! It's definitely one of Atlantic Beach's hot spots. The Flying Iguana was packed with people dining at tables, but is constructed in a way where the bar and food areas felt separate. The decor is great: lots of lights that change color, some murals, and a space for performers. On the night I was here, there was a pretty good guitarist performing. Most people seemed to be eating quesadillas and tacos, and the guacamole looked appetizing as well. My friend and I already ate so we only came to drink. However, having looked at the menu, I would love to try some food here next time we're in Jacksonville! Drinks: extensive collection of tequila and the menu is definitely focused on that, so you might as well try one of their specialty margarita/tequila drinks. I did see other bar goers ordering standard mixed drinks like Jack and Coke though. My friend ordered the Patio Lizard which came in a tall martini glass. You could definitely taste the bourbon and brown syrup that would remind you of Jack Daniel's honey whiskey. The fresh watermelon in it was more evident in the color of the drink than in flavor. I ordered The Garden which had fresh cilantro, cucumber, lime, the house made sour mix/simple syrup and 901 blanco tequila. It was delicious, refreshing, and quite potent. I was lucky enough to stalk the right couple at the bar who happened to be leaving the overly packed bar to grab a seat close to the bumpin service bar and 2 TVs with prelim UFC fights, SCORE !! I quickly ordered the guacamole from a sweet bartender and then another attentive bartender came over to make sure I was taken care of... I mean within seconds of each other! The service stayed this attentive the whole time and I don't even drink ! I only ordered on taco because I peeped the dessert menu and spied stuffed churros with chocolate sauce and knew I needed to save room!! One blackened shrimp taco was plenty and only $4.50. My dessert was huge and only 7 bux!! This place was rocking the whole time I was there and the bartenders kept up like champs . Food was great and the bar staff was incredibly friendly towards me even when an older cranky regular was upset because he didn't have a seat.
