Cute Latin coffee shop in the Mission! There's a good amount of seats and I can see this being a great spot to catch up with friends. I got the Cafe Con Morro which is a latte with morro syrup, made from morro seeds giving it an earthy and sweet flavor. You can get it less sweet which I appreciate and at about 30% sweet, it was perfect for me! Abanico is less well-known than other coffee shops in the Mission but this is definitely a hidden gem to check out. read more

Beautiful and perfectly fitting cafecito shop in the middle of Mission. Commend them for sticking it out through the pandemic and challenges it brought to SF and the community. The decor pays homage to art work that lines the walls of nearby alleys, and feels really well placed in this Mission. I ordered the Cafe con Morro which takes its name from the morro seeds (and allspice), which are also used in Salvadoran horchata! It's not overly sweet- you still taste the strong Mexican beans from @mayanharvestcoffee, balanced and layered. Always in search of new coffee spots. In the area early in the morning and scored parking right in front. The barista greeted us as we entered and explained some of the items on the menu. There were a few things I wanted to try but decided to go with the seasonal latte - pumpkin spice. Hubs went with the popular Cafe con Coco Y Choco. The drinks were beautifully presented. Both were good but I like the hubs' drink more. Would definitely order that one again. They also had a few baked items - I believe they're baked by Kanhfections. You really don't quite expect such a calm open space on Mission, a neighborhood abuzz with taquerias, clubs, and a lot of entitled people who come up behind me on their scooters and scare the bejesus out of me. I hope they fall over so I have something to clean the canine fecal matter off my shoe. But not here as it was quite relaxing just to enter the premises. Owner Ana Valle has successfully created a chill environment just in the warm way she greets neophyte customers like me. True to her Salvadoran roots, she offers signature drinks that would be apropos at a cafe serving Cafecito with libations like Cortadito and Caffe con Leche. The in-house roasting yielded a very smooth brew which definitely justifies a return visit. But only if I can successfully dodge the sidewalk scooters. We stopped by Abanico Coffee Roasters on a Sunday ~1pm and all of the pastries were gone by then! Ah well, the coffee was still fantastic and worth the stop. It's only a short walk from 16th Street/Mission BART stop. The cafe itself is very spacious inside, with a few bar seats facing out the window onto Mission St, and there's a lovely colorful mural on one wall. The two staff working there were both super friendly and answered all of our questions about different ingredients that we hadn't heard of before. DRINKS // + Cafe con coco y choco (5/5): latte with condensed coconut milk and a sprinkle of cacao. This was delicious! Creamy, well-balanced. The aroma from the beans was strong, just how I like it, without being bitter. + Cold brew with milk (5/5): my friend was a fan of this one! + Cafe con morro (3.5/5): latte with morro seed-infused syrup, sprinkled with allspice and ground morro. A delightful new ethnic and cultural spot to embrace the mission, Abanico is doling out some delicious soul-warming drinks. I had never heard of morro seeds, but some investigation tells me it comes from the same source as what makes the delicious horchata. It was such a great drink that I ended up trying the pinolillo too, which was even better. The insides are roomy and with WiFi you can sit and work there while looking at chaotic mission. I walked by this coffee shop and decided to try it out because the drinks looked really unique compared to other coffee shops I've been to recently. I got the Coco y Choco ice latte with oat milk because I wanted something sweet and it was really delicious! I would definitely come back here again for this. It has condensed coconut milk, which I haven't had before but really enjoy. The guy working also let me try a little bit of the iced coffee with cinnamon syrup and syrup made out of sugar (I forgot the name but it's the at the top of the menu) and that was really light and refreshing. Not terrible for the price, but the "Iced Cafe de olla" had good flavor with the touch of cinnamon. Good change if your go to is a vanilla latte. But the almond croissant released the stress that I had obtained from watching some tourists walk into a sketchy alley. The cafe is a good place to go and have a quick coffee and pastry, but personally not a good place to do long work at (no restrooms).
