My general impression of this place is that it's a hometown staple. The clientele is, in a nutshell, old small-town folk... a generation that developed their appetite for fried, large-portioned American/Italian-style dishes in the 50s. I would compare this place to Governor's, for those more familiar with Maine restaurants. That said, I'm sure many customers leave more than satisfied. In my case, not. I ordered the haddock sandwich, and despite it being battered and fried I could tell the fish was old as I was eating it. Needless to say I came down with a case of food poisoning the next day. I wanted to like this place. We had reservations for 9, arrived early and were promptly seated. Orders for drinks were taken quickly. We placed our food orders and that's when the problems started. Our food orders took 45 minutes to bring to our table. Just too long for fish and chips and sandwiches. What's worse only 4 of 9 orders were delivered in the 45 minutes. The remaining 5 orders took another 20 minutes to arrive. Our waitress said something about only being able to put in a max of 4 orders at once. So 5 of us watched the other 4 eat our meals, then 4 watched the 5. Just stupid. The food was decent, no complaints but nothing great. Apple pie was a disappointment; either it had been frozen or wasn't fresh. The apples were like cardboard and flavorless. This place is well regarded locally, it was packed during our meal, but this was my last meal there. read more

Fogarty's is a staple of the south berwick community that has been around since nearly the beginning of time it seems (longer than I've been alive at least). The service is always good and the people very friendly. As a whole the food is decent, not outstanding but good and very reasonably priced. The deserts though are amazing. Cakes, pies, just about anything you could want, they have. I've worked across the river from this restaurant for 6 years and I swear you can smell the fresh baked pies with the windows open in the summer. If nothing else, stop by and take home a sampler pack of their deserts. That alone is nearly enough to warrant this place getting all 5 stars. read more

Yum! 8 years I've been in the area and I'm just FINALLY getting into Fogarty's, a legend in South Berwick. We sat in the back dining room/porch. Our server was extremely pleasant and attentive. I had the chicken parmesean sandwich, with grilled green beans on the side. The beans were so delicious! I couldn't stop eating them! The chicken was juicy and perfectly fried. My husband had the fish and chips, which he also enjoyed very much. Everything was so good! The onion rings were sweet and also perfectly fried. I was also impressed with the atmosphere and cleanliness of the restaurant. I wasn't intentionally looking for a pristine restaurant, but I couldn't help noticing how perfectly clear the windows were, and then I noticed the tables and decor. Five stars because this places is so South Berwick. I remember when it was a shack, that me and my sister used to go get soft serve ice cream. Now its totally different and most everyone who eats there are return customers. the food is not all that fancy, but it is good New England food; if that makes any sense. my favorite is the fried clams, lightly fried. i used to like the potato skins as well and the cheese fries. i will go there this January to see if it has changed anymore since last time i was there. read more

It's a great place to take the Grandparents as one Yelper wrote. It's also great to take the family, kiddos, friends. It's an awesome place if you want to feel welcomed enjoy sincere service, no bs from the staff. What do I mean "no bs"? You'd think you already know them, they're truly there to service and make your experience a friendly one. The food is great. There's nothing "fancy" on the menu and it's a positive because you know exactly what you're getting AND what you're getting is as you ordered it. I've yet to not be happy with any item from the seafood, to the burgers (Larry's Favorite was one I tried last night) to the French Fries. The desserts are fresh and worth the trip! Fogarty's is located on lower Main St with a parking lot and street parking so you will not have to deal with the busy Main St parking. Overall ... may not be anything "fancy" but I'll take quality food and friendly service over anything fancy any day. read more

Oh damn, why is Fogarty's so far from where I live? This is a nice, simple, unpretentious little restaurant that gets everything right. Absolutely everything was cooked right and was delicious, the service was great, the restaurant was clean. If I was looking for something fancy or trendy, this wouldn't be it. Just like if I wanted sushi, I wouldn't go to Fogarty's. They've been here since 1960 and there's a certain retro quality to the place, but everything is clean, fresh, and recently painted. They do what they're good at and they get it absolutely right. I can see this being a place frequented by retirees and older people, but there were 25 year olds there too. As for the location: if you can find the mills at Salmon Falls, you could walk over the bridge to Fogarty's in maybe a minute. I can't wait to go back. read more

Awesome service, great atmosphere. Waitstaff is super fun and friendly, all smiles! They really take a lot of pride in Fogarty's and understandably so. The establishment has been around since 1960. I ordered clam chowder (so fresh and wonderful). I also seem to of created a possible new menu item, when I requested an Arnold Palmer, utilizing the strawberry Lemonaide (was told all the staff in the back kitchen were eager to try it out). The mills of yesterday can be seen out the windows, in the distance. Onion rings are good. Corn beef Reuben is also really good. They gave us a lot of napkins and hearty portions; which they seem to be known for hearty portions, from what our waitress said. Crayons and a menu to color on, for our daughter, right away. Shocking. That really describes the service provided by this establishment. My family has ordered take out from this place numerous times, and each and every time there is a problem with the order. The food is overwhelmingly moderate, but consistent, yet the problems truly arise with the service. Many times food was left out of the bag and my grandfather had to go all the way back to the next town over and pick up what should've come with us the first time. We couldn't just leave it be, because they charged us for it! When calling the establishment about the mistakes, they really just don't care, and don't offer any type of consolation. Eating inside the restaurant is probably the only way to avoid this, because that's the only way they won't leave something out of your order. read more

We used to love coming here; had NEVER had a bad meal or bad experience. I don't know what has happened, but it was terrible tonight! The burger that should have been medium, was well done. The liver was overcooked and tough. The chicken tenders had no seasoning whatsoever. The chicken sandwich was undercooked and so inedible. The clam chowder was awful. We waited one hour for take-out, having looked forward to having a good meal post-pandemic, and ended up throwing out all of the food. When I called to let the manager know about our disappointment and suggested that they check their quality control in the kitchen, her response was "thank you for letting us know." Found my new favorite restaurant! Took my brother, who now lives in New Orleans, there for lunch recently. Food was amazing. Our server, Allie, was top notch. We had some delicious Maine dishes - lobster roll, clam chowder, cranberry bisque soup, Allagash beer, plus an old standby for a picky eater, chicken tenders with fries, and pie! The maple cream pie - which we had never even heard of it before our visit - was TO DIE FOR!! I have been telling everyone about this gem of a restaurant so close to home, and will be back often! A great "family-style" restaurant with solid food and service. I got a BBQ chicken sandwich and it was excellent. My girlfriend got a clam-strips plate with O-rings and that was excellent too. Hi. I went to Fogarty's some months ago & it was kind of-orgasmic. the only thing was the richness, the food here is done heavy & rich. on that occasion i had an ice coffee, everything on that particular visit was heavy but great & i even heard one guy moan 'sooo gooood'. went back the other day...the ice coffee was way too weak. i ordered grilled haddock. in all fairness i've not ordered such a thing before but i pictured a nice grilled thing with a little breadcrumbs. what i got was a piece of haddock trapped in a thick encasing, thank god it was brittle enough that i was able to knock all that crap off. my point in ordering grilled haddock was to get a piece of fish where the main ingredient-fish, is able to shine. it seems to me only the rich can get a decent seafood meal in a restaurant. i'm tired of fried seafood, no matter where you go it's mostly batter. i also had a caesar salad. the salad ingredients were good but i wouldn't call the dressing caesar. i dumped it all over my salad & regretted it after. i think this dressing had 5x the calories & there was nothing caesar about it. in my opinion. that being said we have a gift certificate & will be returning. i will think more strategically about what to order but i hope they get their ice coffee in order. i want to add that i found their fried mushrooms to be really, really good but beware of dipping sauces & dressings. i feel like everything's 'ranch'. read more

This was a childhood staple for us and every time we visit the area we like to stop in for their addictive onion rings and fries! Their fried vegetable appetizer with the ranch dipping sauce and marinara sauce is the best and we jokingly talk about it all the time cause we miss it! The food and dessert were bland, and I was charged $2 for a soft drink with no free refill. 20% was added to each check for the tip, I object to that practice. Stopped in for lunch with my mom, I got the soup salad and garlic bread combo (Cesar salad, butternut​ cranberry bisque soup) which was fantastic. My mom got half a Ruben and a dinner salad. What a huge disappointment for our family..... Members of our clan have been going to fogarty's for over 40 years. Last week we wanted to celebrate an 80th birthday there and when we called, they told us not to come...... no reservations, no we could not use the room upstairs and if you come with 20 people you will wait a long time. Went to Locals in North Hampton, where we were welcomed, accomodated and had a marvelous time. Such a shame I will NEVER go to fogarty's again.
