Folklore is a great locally owned Argentinan spot offers authentic dishes from empanadas, exstensive meat selection, pasta and seafood options. A great dim candlelight vibe this is a great romantic spot for a date. The food was delicious with great flavor and the service was great. They also have a great cocktail and wine list.

My husband and I came here to celebrate his birthday and had great service, food and drinks. Jose, our server was very attentive and friendly. The place is very romantic, I highly recommend for date night. We found parking right in the front on a Wednesday evening.

My second time here and I have to say it get better and better every time!! Convinced my partner to ignore the cold (-8 with windchill) and visit Folklore!! He really didn't want to but was able to convince him! Upon arrival we were seated right away! A shocking surprise! Thanks windchill! Oscar was our server and made great recommendations!! We started with the chicken and beef empanadas! So delicious!! I personally liked the chicken better! Then got the Provoleta add chorizo, so amazing! Paired with their house bread, YUM!! For entrees we decided to share El Che. We had plenty of leftovers and unfortunately no room for dessert!!

We used to love Folklore a few years ago and preCOVID. However our recent experiences have been more mixed especially when it came to the steak offerings. Service is always excellent and the interior has a dark, cozy energy despite being very large. The patio is pleasant on nice days. On multiple occasions, we've received meat that was very well done and very tough despite requesting otherwise. The sweetbreads were also tough to the point of being inedible, with a lot of sinew across the cuts. Overall a great place for wine, tapas, and lounging but the core meat offerings have declined substantially in quality.

We got here and was led to the back window area where our hostess let us choose which table we wanted to be seated at. It felt a little bit more private for us to celebrate my husband's birthday dinner. I started with the beef empanada and it was really well done with the sauce. It was also very filling and probably prevented me from eating more of my main dish. This Elche steak was the star of the show for sure it was so flavorful and tender it was cooked perfectly. I loved that it came with grilled vegetables of red pepper, asparagus and mushrooms. I did order the spinach mashed potatoes additionally and everything was just the right combination, so well balanced. Plus the glass of red wine and then I had my husband's Rogel torta birthday cake, and it was such a sweet ending. Our server was fantastic and it was such a memorable evening and meal.

Having just returned from Argentina, I can honestly say this place is the real deal. From food to decor, the experience was authentic and impeccable. I loved the rustic atmosphere and the service was very attentive and fun to talk with. You could tell they genuinely enjoyed their work. Now for the food. My spinach and cheese empanada was too good! You could tell it was homemade from the delicious dough to the savory filling. I had salmon as a main course and it wad a parmesan crust - unexpected and absolutely delicious. The mashed potatoes were so creamy and tasty, it was like eating dessert. We were so stuffed from the meal that we didn't order dessert - but plan to be back!

Beef empanadas, cooked perfectly - $5.00 each

Tonight was my first and last visit to Folklore. My husband had been a few times previously but thus was my first time. We started with 2 beef empanadas which were good. Chimichurri was very good. Bread was good. We then had the Provoleta which was not bad. It was a little pricey at $16.00 but it was not bad. My husband ordered the gnocchi at $27.00 which was pretty pricey as well. And I ordered the milanesa which turned out to be chicken milanesa and not the traditional beef milanesa. This also was a tad expensive at $30.00. A can of Coke was $5.00. The gnocchi were quite rubbery in texture. But the most abysmal part of our meal was the milanesa de pollo - chicken milanesa. It was bland, dry and nasty tasting. I have never had a worse milanesa served to me in all my life. I sent the milanesa back to the kitchen and asked it to be taken off the bill as I only ate 3 bites and thought I would throw up if I ate any more of it. I then ordered another beef empanada as that was the best item we got tonight. They sent out a burnt empanada which was twice as cooked as the first 2 we had gotten earlier in the meal. It was disgusting so I sent it back. Finally a manager came out to the table and asked if everything was OK. At which point I told him everything that was wrong. Also, we had to ask for them to light our candle on our table, but every other table had theirs lit, and the lights above our table were never turned on, so we ate in the dark while the rest of the restaurant had their lights on. I don't know if they were having them off night, but I will never be back. And finally they took the Entraña aka Skirt Steak off the menu and when asked no one could tell us exactly why. Entraña is what my husband always had ordered here and why he had kept coming back 3 other times. Frankly this place isn't worth it to either one of us any more and we know good Argentine food as my husband is from Buenos Aires and we cook this type of food and visit Argentinian restaurants.

Massively underrated restaurant in Chicago. Warm and cozy ambience with vintage charm. Great cocktails and delicious bread. We shared empanadas for the app and thought the beef was the highlight. The Berenjena and El Filet were standouts, and steak was cooked to perfection. We were too full for dessert, but they looked amazing. Amazing service topped off a wonderful evening!

    Menu

The online menu does not match the real menu, and the pricing was about 27% more in person than on the website. Food was very good, great flavors. Service was great. Ambiance was nice, almost too dark.

Hands down: the Best Argentinian grilled meat restaurant in the city, and I've tried a few. Came in right when they opened up. We were sat immediately by a very friendly host. Loved the decor of the place, not pretentious and very cozy. Loved the fire place in the main dining area. Loved the long stick candle on the table. Our waiter was kind and gave us ample time to read the menu. We ordered a beef empanada which was huge and full of spicy delicious beef mince. The crust was flaky and buttery: really good. We then split the Parrillada Mixta (for two) and all of the meats were cooked perfectly: the Short Rib stood out for its flavor. Honestly a great overall experience here: service was friendly & prompt, the food was plentiful & delicious, and the quality of the meat was unmatched. I will definitely be back.

First time here was in 2017/2018, loved everything about it! The drinks, the food, the vibes! But man did things take a turn after 2020. We use to visit a few times a year but once Covid hit we didn't return until in 2021 and everything was different. Our return visit we were disappointed. Went back 2023, disappointed. Now in 2025 disappointed. What made me mad back in 2021 was the removal of the el solitario dish, it was steak (I forgot what cut) topped with Gorgonzola cheese and served with broccolini. It was so good!! An item we did see that stayed and is still on the menu is El filet. It's ok. Seems to be getting blander. Now drinks. The sangria here was the best sangria everrrrrr. It had wine, vanilla, cognac, and it warmed your soul. It paired so beautifully with the steak (don't come for me lol). Welp they must of gotten tired of making it that day or something cause look at the new sangria. WHY IS THERE A CHERRY AT THE BOTTOM. Why is the wine floating. Geeze. What happened????? Also it took almost 35mins to get two drinks and we arrived an hour after opening on a Thursday, not many people. We ordered a second drink once our entrees arrived and cancelled them because we were done with our entrees and just disappointed overall. At least the bread is still good....

    Unexpected amazing dinner!

A neighbor gem! We have tried Tango Sur, El Cheand this place in Chicago, and Folklore clearly stands out as the best. It is the most specious one providing my own personal space and very relaxed vibe. The server was very attentive. We got parrillada for two and berenjena en escabeche (eggplant with various herbs). Berenjena was a big surprise for us, and it was so good on its own but was better with different meat types. Meat platter was awesome; and my wife loved the blood sausage while my favorite was sweetbread. Portion was so big for both dishes, and it can definitely feed more than 2 (likely 4 for the regular eaters like my wife and me). Thoroughly enjoyed Folklore. Will definitely come again!

We are! Reservations are made by phone only. You can leave a message or call during business hours to speak to someone directly. Thanks for your inquiry. Hope to hear from you soon.

    Do they have Dessert?? Alfajores?

Their dessert menu is a plate of different types of cakes which they bring to your table. I don't believe I have seen alfajores.

    Is this byob?

No. Tango Sur (their sister restaurant in Lakeview) is BYOB. Folklore has a full bar and affordable bottles of wine

Does the spinach mash also include potatoes or just purely spinach?

Puréed spinach with mashed potatoes. It's amazing!

Long Review: Met a friend for dinner while in Chicago and he said Gibson's was a must. We went on a Thursday night and the place was absolutely packed. Barely any walking room when you entered the bar / check-in area. We ordered drinks in the bar while waiting for our table and it was a scene - a good one. Very vibrant and really friendly people all around. Piano bar vibes with the live playing at your request. Bartenders are attentive and try to get to everyone quickly. Just to give you a sense of how friendly this place is, I accidentally knocked over my glass of wine while reaching for the bill. Caught it though...phew. But not before I spilled it all over the back of the woman sitting next to me, the man to the right of me, and of course all over myself! Within two seconds, a waitress came over with napkins to help clean up the mess, the guy sitting next to me got on the floor and wiped it all up, and the woman whom I spilled the drink all over was like "Don't even worry about! At least you caught the wine glass!" Wow! I was stunned at how cool everyone was, and it set the tone for the evening. We finally got our table and split the Gipson's ribeye, lobster, sweet potato and brussel sprouts. Seriously one of the best steakhouse meals I've ever had. The negative: for a restaurant where you going to spend over $100 a person, we had to ask twice for water refills, in fact one time we asked the manager and he had to track down our servers. The seating is just ok, it's pretty loud as your on top of each other really. The steak was above average but not great. They seems to char the outside see pictures and it was fairly bland, got the filet. Salad was drowned with dressing and had virtually nothing other than 2 average cheap grape tomatoes. The sides were just ok. I wanted to be blown away as Chicago is "known" for their steaks, the waiter even said they had their own rating. Meh... After eating twice in Vegas this month and getting wagyu I guess I'm spoiled. Go once to get the experience.

Forget about the perfectly made drinks that were served to us. Ricardo made us feel right at home with his kind disposition and friendly demeanor. But it doesn't just stop at Ricardo. Everyone was absolutely fantastic. We could have been served 7-11 sushi at this point and I still would have left 5 stars. Food time. The kimchi pork dumplings were an absolute flavor bomb and that parmesan broth gave the dumplings a little extra kick that took it to the next level. Plus, I love when the dumpling wrapper has a little chew to it and isn't this soft mush that dissolves in your mouth. The beef fat frites were a nice treat as well. We decided to order à la carte instead of the tasting menu to try a wider variety of items across the menu. For a Korean restaurant, I found it quite unusual that the banchan came with an additional charge. But, this is only if you order à la carte. It is included with the tasting menu. The following was plenty of food for two people: Selected Items: Tteokbokki - 3/5 Banchan - 3/5 Ssam - 4/5 Soondubu - 5/5 Prime marinated short rib - 3/5 Prime Ribeye Roll - 4/5 My favorite item was definitely the soondubu, which was extremely flavorful. If anything, the most disappointing dish was the Prime marinated short rib. I couldn't taste any marinade, and it was quite bland. When you order meat, the staff cooks it for you. Our server was very pleasant and did a great job prepping and serving. Additionally, the interior decor is quite nice and feels very cozy. At the end of the meal, the restaurant adds a 3.0% "surcharge" as well. But maybe that's standard in Chicago. This place has potential, but at this price point, when the meat itself and most of the dishes feel average, I just don't see a reason to come back.

The wood shelving, classic decor, and lively atmosphere made it feel timeless. The service was easily one of the best parts of the experience. Since it was our first visit, David walked us through the restaurant's history, constantly refilled waters, and somehow managed to clear plates within seconds of us finishing. They also made us an anniversary card, gave us complimentary sparkling water, and surprised us with a slice of key lime pie. The hospitality was incredible and made us feel genuinely celebrated. The stone crab was super fresh and the mustard sauce was the perfect pairing. The crab bisque was rich and creamy. The filet was cooked perfectly with a great sear, while the stuffed lobster tail was warm, flavorful, and topped with a parmesan crust. The lobster roll was solid with a perfectly toasted brioche bun. The sweet corn was sweet, buttery, and smoky. For dessert, the blueberry pie was so comforting. The filling had a chewy texture, wasn't overly sweet, and the crust was perfectly crisp. The key lime pie was a nice surprise from the restaurant and had a great graham cracker crust. Overall, every dish was delicious and executed well but nothing really wowed me flavor wise. If you love classic steakhouse food and seafood, this is the spot. The service alone makes it a fantastic spot for celebrations. Thank you David & Joe's Seafood for the incredible night.

Some maître d's are good at hospitality. Jeff W. is operating on another level. Remembering a…read moresurname is one thing; recognizing you early, out of context, before you even formally check in, and greeting you with confidence -- that's a genuine talent. People like him have almost a "super‑recognizer" ability: they store faces, mannerisms, and micro‑details the way others remember song lyrics. It's rare, and when you encounter it, it feels almost uncanny in the best way. And the fact that he consistently recognizes you over the years tells you it's not luck. It's intentional, it's skill, and it's part of why the place feels special before you even sit down. Pair that with a meal that exceeded expectations -- that's the kind of night that reminds you why you've been a loyal patron for so long. Great food is memorable, but great hospitality is what makes a restaurant feel like a second home.

I had seen it previously advertised on TikTok and decided it looked like a nice, upscale dining experience and the perfect mimosa-filled brunch opportunity. Upon coming in at 11 when the location opened, I was already impressed by the beautiful cafe inspired French interior. The warm lighting and refined Parisian details were so beautiful and elegant, and I especially loved the look of the bar, which is a central statement of this restaurant. I chose the French toast breakfast and my boyfriend got the steak and eggs, and we both had mimosas as well! My French toast was light, fluffy, and delicious, definitely a solid choice. My boyfriend was super impressed by the steak and eggs and said it was the best breakfast he had our entire trip! The food itself was great and I would love to come back and try their dinner menu at some point. The service, however, is what truly stood out to me in our experience. Our servers were very helpful, knowledgeable about the menu, and speedy. We truly felt taken care of. Fernando was the sweetest and most welcoming, and he immediately made my boyfriend and I feel so welcomed and at home in Chicago. We greatly enjoyed our conversation with him and he even gifted me a coffee table book detailing the history and menu of La Grande Boucherie, which was so kind and such an amazing gesture. Fernando set our experience apart from any other dining experience in Chicago and he made this meal one of our favorites!

We booked a table for 8 to celebrate an 80th birthday. The service was fine as was the ambiance,…read morebut we found the food to be mediocre and overpriced. We ordered the $195.00 seafood tower, only to find that it barely included any seafood, 1/2 of a lobster, 4 shrimp and about a dozen oysters. I understand that Chicago is not a coastal city, but to not even include an entire lobster for a tower that cost $195.00?! Yikes! The drinks are also very expensive, and we found the steaks to be tough and dry. The Niçoise salad was awful, and not at all what we expected. It was drowning in dressing and the combination of anchovies and tuna did not work. It was also quite obvious that the tuna was not seared properly. I did think the roast chicken was good, and the fries were by far the best part of the meal. We went to several fine restaurants over the past few days to celebrate a milestone birthday, and La Grande Boucherie was the absolute worst in terms of value and quality of food. They were also the only establishment that didn't give the celebrant a small desert with a candle to mark the occasion. Just disappointing all around.

Ambiance and decor is top notch! This is SUCH a pretty spot! Very IG-worthy, with different details and moods on different walls. The bar was especially stunning. Service was impeccable. From the minute we walked in, the host and manager were friendly and personable. Our server was the right amount of conversational to make it feel personal but not overwhelmingly so. He was also very knowledgeable about the menu and had great recs. When I asked about "Sophia style" he had great descriptions and recommended it as his personal go-to. The bus staff was also incredibly attentive and wiped down the table between courses (a detail of fine dining that I think makes a huge difference!) Now the FOOD! Wow the truffle fries were some of the best fries I've ever had in my life. Weird item to lock in on, I know, but a good fry tells you everything else will be amazing too. It was crispy on the outside and the perfect pillowy texture on the inside. The steaks and bacon were incredible. It was cooked exactly as I like (I like mine medium well and run into a lot of places undercooking it. I know, it's unpopular but I am also paying for what I want. So I appreciate the perfection from Sophia on this one!) and I really enjoyed it Sophia Style. I love that all steaks already come with the house steak sauce and steak salt at bare minimum. The chocolate cake was AMAZING. it's gigantic, they literally served it with a steak knife lol. It's hazelnut and chocolate so it has a very rich deep flavor. They brought it out with a candle for my birthday which was a nice touch! Sophia Steak made my birthday dinner feel very special and we cannot recommend it enough for your special occasion!
