Folklore is a great locally owned Argentinan spot offers authentic dishes from empanadas, exstensive meat selection, pasta and seafood options. A great dim candlelight vibe this is a great romantic spot for a date. The food was delicious with great flavor and the service was great. They also have a great cocktail and wine list.

My husband and I came here to celebrate his birthday and had great service, food and drinks. Jose, our server was very attentive and friendly. The place is very romantic, I highly recommend for date night. We found parking right in the front on a Wednesday evening.

My second time here and I have to say it get better and better every time!! Convinced my partner to ignore the cold (-8 with windchill) and visit Folklore!! He really didn't want to but was able to convince him! Upon arrival we were seated right away! A shocking surprise! Thanks windchill! Oscar was our server and made great recommendations!! We started with the chicken and beef empanadas! So delicious!! I personally liked the chicken better! Then got the Provoleta add chorizo, so amazing! Paired with their house bread, YUM!! For entrees we decided to share El Che. We had plenty of leftovers and unfortunately no room for dessert!!

We used to love Folklore a few years ago and preCOVID. However our recent experiences have been more mixed especially when it came to the steak offerings. Service is always excellent and the interior has a dark, cozy energy despite being very large. The patio is pleasant on nice days. On multiple occasions, we've received meat that was very well done and very tough despite requesting otherwise. The sweetbreads were also tough to the point of being inedible, with a lot of sinew across the cuts. Overall a great place for wine, tapas, and lounging but the core meat offerings have declined substantially in quality.

We got here and was led to the back window area where our hostess let us choose which table we wanted to be seated at. It felt a little bit more private for us to celebrate my husband's birthday dinner. I started with the beef empanada and it was really well done with the sauce. It was also very filling and probably prevented me from eating more of my main dish. This Elche steak was the star of the show for sure it was so flavorful and tender it was cooked perfectly. I loved that it came with grilled vegetables of red pepper, asparagus and mushrooms. I did order the spinach mashed potatoes additionally and everything was just the right combination, so well balanced. Plus the glass of red wine and then I had my husband's Rogel torta birthday cake, and it was such a sweet ending. Our server was fantastic and it was such a memorable evening and meal.

Having just returned from Argentina, I can honestly say this place is the real deal. From food to decor, the experience was authentic and impeccable. I loved the rustic atmosphere and the service was very attentive and fun to talk with. You could tell they genuinely enjoyed their work. Now for the food. My spinach and cheese empanada was too good! You could tell it was homemade from the delicious dough to the savory filling. I had salmon as a main course and it wad a parmesan crust - unexpected and absolutely delicious. The mashed potatoes were so creamy and tasty, it was like eating dessert. We were so stuffed from the meal that we didn't order dessert - but plan to be back!

Beef empanadas, cooked perfectly - $5.00 each

Tonight was my first and last visit to Folklore. My husband had been a few times previously but thus was my first time. We started with 2 beef empanadas which were good. Chimichurri was very good. Bread was good. We then had the Provoleta which was not bad. It was a little pricey at $16.00 but it was not bad. My husband ordered the gnocchi at $27.00 which was pretty pricey as well. And I ordered the milanesa which turned out to be chicken milanesa and not the traditional beef milanesa. This also was a tad expensive at $30.00. A can of Coke was $5.00. The gnocchi were quite rubbery in texture. But the most abysmal part of our meal was the milanesa de pollo - chicken milanesa. It was bland, dry and nasty tasting. I have never had a worse milanesa served to me in all my life. I sent the milanesa back to the kitchen and asked it to be taken off the bill as I only ate 3 bites and thought I would throw up if I ate any more of it. I then ordered another beef empanada as that was the best item we got tonight. They sent out a burnt empanada which was twice as cooked as the first 2 we had gotten earlier in the meal. It was disgusting so I sent it back. Finally a manager came out to the table and asked if everything was OK. At which point I told him everything that was wrong. Also, we had to ask for them to light our candle on our table, but every other table had theirs lit, and the lights above our table were never turned on, so we ate in the dark while the rest of the restaurant had their lights on. I don't know if they were having them off night, but I will never be back. And finally they took the Entraña aka Skirt Steak off the menu and when asked no one could tell us exactly why. Entraña is what my husband always had ordered here and why he had kept coming back 3 other times. Frankly this place isn't worth it to either one of us any more and we know good Argentine food as my husband is from Buenos Aires and we cook this type of food and visit Argentinian restaurants.

Massively underrated restaurant in Chicago. Warm and cozy ambience with vintage charm. Great cocktails and delicious bread. We shared empanadas for the app and thought the beef was the highlight. The Berenjena and El Filet were standouts, and steak was cooked to perfection. We were too full for dessert, but they looked amazing. Amazing service topped off a wonderful evening!

    Menu

The online menu does not match the real menu, and the pricing was about 27% more in person than on the website. Food was very good, great flavors. Service was great. Ambiance was nice, almost too dark.

Hands down: the Best Argentinian grilled meat restaurant in the city, and I've tried a few. Came in right when they opened up. We were sat immediately by a very friendly host. Loved the decor of the place, not pretentious and very cozy. Loved the fire place in the main dining area. Loved the long stick candle on the table. Our waiter was kind and gave us ample time to read the menu. We ordered a beef empanada which was huge and full of spicy delicious beef mince. The crust was flaky and buttery: really good. We then split the Parrillada Mixta (for two) and all of the meats were cooked perfectly: the Short Rib stood out for its flavor. Honestly a great overall experience here: service was friendly & prompt, the food was plentiful & delicious, and the quality of the meat was unmatched. I will definitely be back.

First time here was in 2017/2018, loved everything about it! The drinks, the food, the vibes! But man did things take a turn after 2020. We use to visit a few times a year but once Covid hit we didn't return until in 2021 and everything was different. Our return visit we were disappointed. Went back 2023, disappointed. Now in 2025 disappointed. What made me mad back in 2021 was the removal of the el solitario dish, it was steak (I forgot what cut) topped with Gorgonzola cheese and served with broccolini. It was so good!! An item we did see that stayed and is still on the menu is El filet. It's ok. Seems to be getting blander. Now drinks. The sangria here was the best sangria everrrrrr. It had wine, vanilla, cognac, and it warmed your soul. It paired so beautifully with the steak (don't come for me lol). Welp they must of gotten tired of making it that day or something cause look at the new sangria. WHY IS THERE A CHERRY AT THE BOTTOM. Why is the wine floating. Geeze. What happened????? Also it took almost 35mins to get two drinks and we arrived an hour after opening on a Thursday, not many people. We ordered a second drink once our entrees arrived and cancelled them because we were done with our entrees and just disappointed overall. At least the bread is still good....

    Unexpected amazing dinner!

A neighbor gem! We have tried Tango Sur, El Cheand this place in Chicago, and Folklore clearly stands out as the best. It is the most specious one providing my own personal space and very relaxed vibe. The server was very attentive. We got parrillada for two and berenjena en escabeche (eggplant with various herbs). Berenjena was a big surprise for us, and it was so good on its own but was better with different meat types. Meat platter was awesome; and my wife loved the blood sausage while my favorite was sweetbread. Portion was so big for both dishes, and it can definitely feed more than 2 (likely 4 for the regular eaters like my wife and me). Thoroughly enjoyed Folklore. Will definitely come again!

We are! Reservations are made by phone only. You can leave a message or call during business hours to speak to someone directly. Thanks for your inquiry. Hope to hear from you soon.

    Do they have Dessert?? Alfajores?

Their dessert menu is a plate of different types of cakes which they bring to your table. I don't believe I have seen alfajores.

    Is this byob?

No. Tango Sur (their sister restaurant in Lakeview) is BYOB. Folklore has a full bar and affordable bottles of wine

Does the spinach mash also include potatoes or just purely spinach?

Puréed spinach with mashed potatoes. It's amazing!

The mushroom and kale pie was nice and cheesy and the rocking vegan pie was more savoury, with a variety of vegetables and chickpeas as stuffing. The crust was neither too soft nor too crunchy. The highlight of the meal was the curry chips: potato wedges lightly fried with masala and curry leaves. The dipping sauce that came with the chips reminded me of tikka masala sauce, and paired beautifully with the chips. Dessert was toffee pudding: the caramel sauce that came with the pudding was delectable - the pudding itself was excellent and not overly sweet. We tried a variety of NA beers, and I was pleased with how many options they had. Service was quick, and we were well looked after. The ambiance is warm, with dim-ish lighting and a lot of dark wood. The restrooms were gorgeous - special shoutout to the lovely floral wallpaper. Overall, I highly recommend Pleasant House - the vibe is chill and understated and the food is stellar.

The sausage was very tasty, the breading on the outside was incredibly crisp, light, and the egg inside was cooked well. Both the steak pie and the chicken pie were very good. The chicken pie I think really needed the chutney that you can get separately. But that made it so much better and made it my preferred pie. The steak and ale pie was better than the chicken pie as a standalone, but needed a bit more gravy I think to elevate it. Sticky toffee pudding again was delicious. Surprisingly light, not overly dense so I was glad it came with the custard which was very flavorful. Overall, will definitely return!

Similar to some of the other comments, it would be nice to first come in, sit down, get relax then have someone take your order when dining in. However you place your order at the front door and then can sit down. The customer service lacked tremendously from the youthful stuff(late teens/very early 20's) But I will say the most underwhelming thing about this experience was the building. Inside & out it was very primitive & just flat out old. I know they just moved from another location and looking to get their foot in the door. But hopefully a renovation is in the plans. The inside is a bit of an eye soar. Needless to say, I would come back if in the area because of the food. But I wouldn't go out of my way patronize them.
