The manager, Tiny, was extremely accommodating to my diet restrictions when I realized that there was nothing specific on the menu that I could eat. I will try to make this short. One of my friends ordered pizza egg rolls. She got them and looked inside after a bite and it was just cheese, no sausage. My son tried one and said the same thing. Told the lazy waitress and she took it to the kitchen and came back and said, the cooks say it's the pizza ones. We told her to cut into it and you will see that there is only cheese in it. Also have the kitchen look at it. Since they weren't going to do anything about it she wanted the other 2 back (they are not cheap). She came back with 2 new egg rolls that was correct. Why only 2? We tried Fong's for the first time tonight. We came to DM from Nebraska for the state fair. There were 4 of us - 2 kids and 2 adults. Michaela was our waitress and she told us she is normally a bar tender. She was very friendly, especially to our 3 year old son who was very tired from the fair and on the verge of melting down when we arrived. The food at Fong's was good, but Michaela's personality and service was the highlight of our entire day and the reason we will be back. First time coming a into Fongs on a friends recomendation and was impressed with the Asian fusion with pizza. First thing noticed was the long line to get seated. After that the bar right in the middle and then the awesome specialty tiki glasses. I had to get one so I ordered the waving kitty and it was delicious. I ordered the veggie crab rangoons and it had fresh warm veggies and would highly recommend as an appetizer. I then ordered the crab Rangoon pizza and wow was it delicious! Fong's is a local staple and understandably-so. Their pizzas are quite creative in terms of inclusion of various toppings, sauces, and such. Additionally, they're open very late with a limited selection for those night-dwellers and bar-crawlers among us. My only misgivings is Fong's pizza isn't designed for crust-eaters, with it always poor to eat. read more

I love pizza! I love Chinese food! I thought I hit the jackpot on my recent trip to Des Moines. I was tempted by the idea of a perfect marriage. Oh I was so disappointed... Ambiance is good. As soon as you walk in, you will notice that the restaurant's center piece is the bar. Bar tender is friendly and the beer selection is very extensive. Seemed like a great place to hang out after work or to hang with neighbors. One star for ambiance. Menu is quite extensive. I passed on crab rangoon, fongolian beef, thai chicken pizzas. I ordered the general tso's pizza for a full fusion experience. I expected a crispy fried chicken, sweet brown sauce dish on a crisp pizza crust. I did get a nice crispy pizza crust but I did not recognize the unfamiliar topping that pretended to be the General. Chicken was soggy, salty, and hard to find - not deep fried or any tangy and sweetness that is the General. Chicken was also hard to find because this general tso's CHICKEN was mostly made of baby corn and water chestnut. If you are looking for good Chinese food, I recommend San Francisco or Vancouver :-). If you are looking for good pizza, I recommend going elsewhere. When in Iowa, go for pork chops! (BTW, the second star is for a creative fusion idea - too bad it is so poorly implemented.) read more

Updating my review. We hadn't gone in about a year after the server/host fiasco, but our in-laws were in town and had always wanted to try it. We went in when it was slow and rainy out, and this time, the service was so much better. We sat ourselves and a server came around to take our orders. We took a bit of time to figure out what we wanted, mainly because of the folks who had never been. I ordered the Crab Rangoon made gluten-free and with vegan cheese, my husband had the Meatzilla with no cheese, and my in-laws had the Crab Rangoon without a special order. The server came back about 3x to make sure my husband knew which sauces had cheese. Each time he thought there was something we needed to know, he came right out and told us. They ended up using the standard marinara instead of the usual sauce on the pizza, just to make double sure my husband had absolutely no cheese. All of our pizza came out quickly after and we just really appreciated the amount of effort put into keeping us informed. Ready for the twist? The server, being as knowledgeable as he was, neglected to physically write down our orders. When he asked and didn't have a pad and paper, my brain went "it's okay, give them a chance. He seems to know what he's doing." Booyyyy was I wrong. If you've ever had the Crab Rangoon pizza (don't get me wrong, you should- it's so good), you know it has a crap-load of toppings. I mean, that's what we love about it. The only issue is that I didn't notice it had dairy cheese until I'd already eaten a few slices. My in-laws paid the tab so I didn't even see if they were charged extra for it. About a few hours later, I was down and out. If you're wondering how the rest of my night went, I got incredibly sick. Next day? Even worse. The thing is, that could've all been avoided if a) I made him repeat my order 10x back to me, b) I pulled every single topping off and physically tested the cheese for it's milk content, c) Told him that I'd not allow him to take my order until he grabs a pen and pad to write it down. That's why I'm giving this 2 stars. Nobody should have to feel rude or inconsiderate just to make sure they don't get sick or that their order was correct. I have eaten here at different times of the day, and night. I personally prefer their pizza during the day and ordering a whole one, rather than ordering by the slice. The crab rangoon is a classic and my favorite, as it is unique and what I believe helps brand this pizza place and diversify it from the many other pizza places that surround here. However, I have gone here several times after the bars, and with it being one of the few restaurants open, I do not feel that it lives up to its potential. The pizza is flimsy and it is not as good as it is during the day. What I'm trying to say, if you're looking for good food after the bars, there are other places I think would be a better option in the same price range. If you're looking for a good pizza place to eat during the day and you're downtown, definitely check it out. They also have very good drinks! read more

I ordered a gluten free pizza because I have celiacs. The girl who answered clearly understood how I could be affected and explained their process to avoid contamination. Condescending and Rude Manager/Wait staff - half decent pizza Decided to go here when we were in town per a recommendation. If not for the service and on pizza alone it would have been a 4 star review but unfortunately the service we received was unacceptable and ruined our experience. We called our order in for carry out as we were driving from out of town and didn't have a lot of time to spare. We ended up getting there ahead of schedule and asked to eat the pizza at a table so we didn't have to eat it in our car. There were only two tables sat and one person sitting at the bar but when we asked to eat at a table (pizza wasn't even done yet so not like they had to take it out of the box to serve) the manager was smug and short and lead us to a table. Not a minute later a waitress came to our table to give a several point lecture on why they can't have people eat in if they order carry out (none of the reason applies to our circumstance) all before even taking our drink order. Point being - VERY condescending and uncomfortable experience and will not go back which is unfortunate because the pizza was pretty decent, not missing out on much though. read more

Ok let me start off and say that I really really really wanted to give this place a good rating since so many people had recommended it and said good things, but it was just not very good. My 3 friends and I wasted 3 hours on a Friday night just to be subjected to a horrendous service experience, bland food, and a tummy ache... I will never come back. 1 Hour and 25 min - we were told a 1 hour wait, which is fine since we went on a Friday and walked around to kill time. I've waited at longer lines for other popular restaurants, so we were determined to give it a try. 1 Hour and 45 min - Service was horrendous. We sat down waited for 20 minutes, no one ever came by to give us water or take our orders. Others that sat down after us had their drinks and orders put in before we even got the attention of the waiter. I asked other waiters zooming by to please let us order and they just gave us the cold shoulder saying it was not their section and that we need to wait for our waiter. Wow, how rude. 2 hours - When we finally did order, the waiter didn't put our ticket in for another 15 minutes so we saw those same tables that came in after us eat their food, finish, and get their check when we were just waiting for our food. Our waiter came by to apologize but blamed it on the bar/kitchen for losing our ticket and then finally served us our drinks. We sat in the booth facing the computer where they put in the orders, we saw him not put it in for a long time. Don't lie to us. 2 hours 20 min - When our food finally arrived the best pizza by far was the crab rangoon on thin crust. The others were really unexciting such as the Polynesian and the Mongolian Beef. Those pizzas were on thick crust and it tasted like cardboard. The toppings were somewhat dry and the pizza wasn't very flavorful. We were all starving since we had been waiting at this point for over 2 hours for our food so we gobbled down as much as we could anyway. 2 hours 50 min - By this point we were almost done eating (only spent 30 min doing so) and we were ready to get the hell out of here and our waiter was no where to be found (go figure). But a new guy comes around saying that our waiter finished his shift and left. This guy is much better or so we think... but he comes by as we are still finishing eating like 2x within 5 minutes to ask us if we're doing ok and if we need a box. We get it, they're trying to kick us out to free up the table since we had been sitting there for almost 2 hours. BUT WE'RE STILL EATING. My friends and I just give up and tell him to bring us a box and check. 3 hours later - We walk out incredibly annoyed and not full. All that waiting for essentially a 30 min eating experience with crappy pizza was not worth it. The worst part was when I got back to my place, my stomach started to feel kinda funny. The service definitely ruined it for us, but the food didn't redeem this place either. Save your time and your stress. There's way better places in Des Moines. read more

Wife and I went here with a buddy to try out a Des Moines "must do" We wore our kamikaze helmets in style. Meanwhile the crab Rangoon pizza was interesting with an interesting mix of cream cheese, crab meat, and won ton strips. We were surprised at how tasty it was. Fong's pizza is bomb diggity. I've been there twice, and both times had a great experience. Their Tiki drinks are tasty (and strong), but don't forget your debit card because at $120 per, they need collateral. Admittedly, they're tempting to want to walk away with. Safety is important while drinking, so don't forget to ask them for a pilot helmet to wear while indulging. You'll be ready to fall down without getting a concussion, not to mention the added benefits of fun photo opportunities. I've had the Loaded Potato pizza, which was delicious and filling. I was skeptical of Crab Rangoon, but during my last visit I gave it a shot based on Jessica W's recommendation and the rave Yelp reviews about it. It was absolutely amazing, I must say! I don't typically get thin crust. However, it complimented this particular pie quite nicely. The Cheeseburger pizza was decent. The ketchup/mustard base sauce wasn't my favorite. If you're into that kinda thing though, you'll love it. I also like the fact they give canned soda! The atmosphere is cool and fun, and the service is great. Whether you're a Des Moines resident or just a visitor stopping through, Fong's Pizza is a DSM landmark you HAVE to experience and share with friends and family. They Thai Sticks are pretty darn good as well. This location can be very busy on the weekends but their check in method is great. I'm not sure how they recreate a crab rangoon in the form of a pizza, but it's crazy good. A large, which fed 4 hungry adults, was only $18.99. They have a solid beer list, too. I got my Bell's Two Hearted on. The first time I came here was with a vegetarian, so we got the 4 cheese pizza, which one would assume would be forgettable, but it was also very tasty. Be prepared to wait. The Lift is across the street, to have some drinks at to pass time. Been in love with Fong's Crab Rangoon Pizza for forever. I called and asked for a Carryout order, they told me it was gonna be a 2 hour wait. I said that was fine, and asked for a small Crab Rangoon pizza. The worker on the other end laughed at me, and asked if I was being serious since the wait was so long. Couldn't tell if she was joking, but either way it was still rude. After the 2 hours, I walked to get my pizza and of course they didn't have it done nor even put in the oven. I waited for over 30 minutes and after that, myself and many other people who were waiting walked out. I understand that they get busy, but at least have decent enough customer service to offer your paying customers some type of incentive or at LEAST an apology. When I saw the name was "Fong's Pizza," I was intrigued. When I saw the picture of the skull with maraschino cherries floating in it, I knew I had to try Fong's. On the drink menu, there are pictures of different types of exotic, ceramic glasses next to drinks from the Tropics, like Singapore Sling and Miehana. Did each drink have a description? Yes. Did this descriptions tell you the ingredients? No. Did these descriptions tell you what kind of idiotic drunk you would become after drinking them? Yes. My SS was tasty but a little weak. My friend's Mai Tai was stronger and very tasty. We ordered a couple slices of cheese pizza. When it arrived, my friend shoved about 1/3 in her mouth, chewed like a chipmunk, and exclaimed: "Tastes like school lunch pizza." It was salty cheese and the dough was definitely fresh from the local elementary school. At close to midnight, this pizza did its job. Fong's is my jam. Fong is my go to place after I have exhausted myself dancing all night long on the weekend. They have slices 10 pm -2 am, which is perfect after a long night of getting your party on. I recently went here and just ordered some pizzas to go and decided to be adventurous and ordered their Loaded Potato pizza. It ended up being the best decision EVER. Man, when they say loaded, they are being serious, this pizza is PILED HIGH with taco meat, bacon, potato, onion jalapeno, cheddar & mozzarella; topped with green onion..basically everything to make the ultimate baked potato. I'm personally pretty sick of people trying too hard with being "unique," and this place is exactly why. I love combining great things, but you have to have one thing in order to do that: discretion. And putting raw broccoli, overcooked greasy beef, and a disgusting onion-rich sauce on top of a round piece of cardboard does NOT make you talented or cool. Well, let me start by saying I think we were over-hyped on Fong's - and that set us up a bit for disappointment. Next, let me say that it was unusually warm in Des Moines last week - highs in the 70's - and that could account for the fact that the ambient temperature in the restaurant was a north of 85 degrees with no breeze/fans - really too hot to eat comfortably. Now...over-hyped...everybody and their brother said "you MUST have the Crab Rangoon pizza..." and we did. If there was crab on this pizza, it completely escaped me. It was tasty - it wasn't as delicious as it was promised to be and the key ingredient really did seem to be AWOL. On the plus side, we had a Chicken Thai pizza that was very delicious...saved the meal. And the side order of cheese sticks wrapped in egg-roll wrappers and deep fried were naughty but nice additions. We waited an hour for a table.
