This place has seen better days like in decades ago. Eddie Basha would be upset with what this place has become sadly. The food is gross. Sitting in hot pans for who knows how long. Went to get a tres leches cake and what they were calling a Tres Leches was a joke and the poor employee at the bakery had no clue whatsoever. Food City apparently can't or won't hire peeps to be cashiers it's was all self checkout with only to machines taking cards and the other ones just accepting cash. The lady was on her cell phone more than she was paying attention to helping customers who had blank looks on their faces. This place should close but the community depends on it so I wouldn't want it to turn into a Food Desert which provides a certain demographic group with items specific to this store. A great place to buy all your tamale ingredients. Their tomatillos are fresh and firm. The amount of chiles they have to choose from is plentiful. They have three types of fresh masa to choose from and husks too. I come back every year. José the cashier has a great personality and customer service. The store is clean. This one is located on the NE corner of Arizona and Ray about a mile North of "downtown" Chandler and Chandler High School. Went there for some chicarrones. They have the normal Food City things. Good place to buy cactus to make salsa. Not sure if they all have a place where you can order food but this one does. See photos for the menu. Okay folks, listen up! I am NOT a Mexican food connoisseur by any means! During the holidays while celebrating with our friends/neighbors-we were the lucky ones who "found the baby" in the sopapillas. The winner was tasked with bringing tamales to the next party on February 2. On a mission to find good tamales after the holiday season was turning out to be a long shot! In our search, someone recommended trying Food City! I headed to the Food City in Chandler (Ray Rd & County Club) and BOOM! Fresh, delicious and totally yummy tamales! They offered a variety of flavors from chicken, beef, pork, and cheese! Ummmm, YES PLEASE! The lady who helped me was awesome and the place was crazy busy yet still really clean and well stocked! We became the highlight of the party and Food City was the hero! I even purchased some of those yummy taco salad bowls for me and my husband for the weekend and O M G! I love menudo so I eat at this location almost every weekend. Yesterday the menudo was flavorless although it was full of good ingredients. I went food city this morning and when was looking at dates on the sausage saw the date was wrong three days old. At this same store a few months ago i got some meat that had shards of glass. I will officially be staying away from food city after giving this place a second try and being disappointed. Be cautious on meat. read more

Normally like shopping here. Deli is alright, some good burritos. Clean, for the most part. Produce can be hit or miss but generally ok. The meat selection, when stocked, is pretty good with good deals. My only gripe is the close outside of business hours, they close at 10:00pm. Guess 9:50pm is the new 10:00pm. Was handwaved away at the door with another customer. Took my business elsewhere. Guess they really don't want my money. read more

I really like going to Food City because they carry a lot of ethnic foods. Even though it is mostly Mexican products, a lot of their products overlap with other cultures. As much as I like finding stuff I need, it is also fun trying new things especially when I have no idea what it is. The variety of items though is not the best thing about Food City. It's the prices! The other day I got four avocados for $1! They also have mangos 3 for $0.99. I called my mom (back in HI) to share in my excitement of prices like these. And the produce items are of good quality too! Whenever I need quality produce on a smaller scale, Food City is where I'm going from now on. read more

I came here for lunch, because they have a big menu with tons of different Mexican food items. They even have caldo de rez and menudo! I came on a Tuesday and they have taco Tuesday specials. Tacos were a $1 each and it's like eating home cooked tacos they were delicious. I did a plate so it came with rice and beans and i recommend adding them to your meal. The staff was nice, fast, and efficient. They also have a big dining area with plenty of chairs and tables to sit and eat. They also have fresh water is like horchata and jaimaica. I tried their fresh lemonade and it was delicious it was perfect for a refreshing hot day. I would definitely come back here for lunch again. We've visited the calendaria a few times recently. We also shop here occasionally for the produce and some Latino products (tortillas, seasonings, etc). But this review is for the calendaria. It's basically cafeteria style. They have steamer trays with various offerings. It all seems to be reasonably authentic. We ordered the breakfast burrito (chorizo). That they prepare fresh. It is cheap and huge. Good flavor, too. It is our go-to spot on the way to work when we want a breakfast burrito. read more

I typically stop in here for dried chilies. I like to make mole and food city offers a good variety of authentic dried chilies plus other stuff you will be hard pressed to find at other grocery stores - piloncillo, non-canned hominy. The produce is hit and miss and some times it's more expensive that other places and is usually not good; spoils quick, is bruised, etc. If you keep your eyes open for sales you can get meat pretty cheap. Store itself is somewhat clean. If you want something you usually need to locate it yourself. read more

I already like this place better than El Rancho across the street. They're cleaner, better organized, and have a much nicer produce section. That's what my review is about, the produce and other bulk items I found and the piñata. Ive been shopping for piñatas all over town. Food City had a small variety, a horse, a bull, a sphere and different types of Mexican tv show characters (el chapulín type and el Chavo type). These were all s great price if 13$! I got the bull one for my kids upcoming party.. Can't beat that price when WinCo and Target have them for more and they're smaller and kinda on the boring side. Produce I bought as you can see in my pic a lot of things: plantains, finger bananas, prickly pear, Brown coconuts, tamarind pods and cactus aka nopales. All looked nice, clean, fresh and were tasty once home and consumed. I don't find this nice of a produce product in the competitor across the street so I'll come here for that. Two Sundays ago, I tried the Mexican eatery attached to the grocery market. Counter lady must have thought I had a hangover to recommend either menudo or beef cocido. Ate breakfast burrito instead. I chose to laced that burrito with green salsa from the condiments bar = very good... To my surprise, a mariachi band was setting up. I stayed a few more minutes to enjoy the mariachi band jam. Still love this store. It's clean and the people working there continue to have excellent service. I've gotten to improve my Spanish, too. Sergio got a promotion, so he's no longer at this store. I'm bummed that he's not at this store, but happy he got a promotion. Esteban I rarely see because they sometimes have him working at a different store. My favorite cashier, Maddie, is always helpful with my Spanish and very pleasant. All the older cashiers, whether male or female are awesome and super friendly. The younger male cashiers are good, too. Sometimes the younger female cashiers are a bit too serious and not as friendly, but that's okay for me. The produce guys mainly speak Spanish, so I have new people to get to know. Manuel in the Butcher's area helps me with my Spanish and I enjoy my weekly visits to the Meat Counter. He is always excellent in customer service with a friendly smile. They could use outside the store in the parking lots better cart returns. The ones they have are awful. The Bashas family which ones all the Food Cities should install similar cart returns to WinCo. However, I've noticed that a large number of people who shop here don't use the cart returns. They just leave the baskets wherever and that includes the driving aisle. A pet peeve of mine and usually I'll round up a few baskets and put them nicely in the cart return. I mainly always shop for things on sale and a lot of the produce I can get here are better priced on sale than other places. I've come to know the rotation of their ads and just wait until whatever I want is on sale. We always get our tortillas here. read more

I do really like food city as they have a great selections of cheese, fresh tortillas, and other fresh cakes and pastries. The store is pretty organized, but when you need help finding something you can hardly find a staff that knows where the items are. The reason we mainly go is during hatch chile season since my husband is mainly from new mexico and he loves his green chiles! I love that we can purchase a large bag and have it roasted. (DISCLOSURE: you need to make sure you purchase the bag of chile same day that they are roasting or else they will not roast it for you the next day it has to be same day for health policies) I've eaten at the food court a couple of times mainly for breakfast as their burritos are really good. I do wish they would figure out a better system to get the food. My husband and I recently went to go get breakfast burritos, upon ordering we were given our drinks and receipt and was told they would call our number. So my husband and I sat down and we wait for approximate 15-20 mins our numbers were never called for our burritos. I got really nervous because everyone else after us has had their food but us... My husband went up to ask the lady in Spanish where our burrito was... It turns out she said someone picked it up and they don't have burritos for us.... I was furious!!! No number was called and how the hell does someone come in and just grab two large burritos!!! The lady decided to make us another one which took another 10 mins. There wasn't many people there but we suspected the couple who was homeless may have taken it.... If they did I had no issue paying for their burrito just don't steal it! I do blame the staff more for not paying attention and calling out the number as they mentioned to us because really there was maybe 5 people eating there that morning!! read more

Aug is the start of New Mexico Hatch chili season! My go to spot for Hatch chilies, though many places sell it... Food City sells the 1 bushel bags (~25-30lbs) in mild/medhot/hot or already roasted outside in the parking lot. No guessing, wondering what you're getting. If you buy bushels such as I, let the cashier know so they will charge you appropriately (10cents more per lb) and the guy outside will roast for you w/ receipt. Roasting at home is a long and tedious process when you're talking 30-60 lbs of chilies on a normal grill. I personally like to mix a bag of mild and medium to freeze for an entire year of green chili goodness. Don't forget to pickup the cojita cheese and crema as well, apparently Food City is award winning for their corn and flour tortillas which this location does make on site. Sometimes I purchase some of their watery fresh fruit juices if it's avail as I walk in. Worst case if the chilies are out, you can go across the street for already roasted and bagged (about double in price) but you don't know what spice level chili you're buying.. so ask if you can sample. read more

Food City? Are you kidding? Yelpers, it's been a while since I've felt like had to edumacte you on something, but instead of driving by, stop and look. Certain Food cities, such as the on listed here, have Tortillareias (dining areas). Food City has the best store bought chips in town at any location, but the tortillerias will blow you away. Excellent, affordable Mexican dishes are available cafetieria style, the beans are kick butt, The Salsas in the store are completely fresh an tasty, Give it a try! Okay, this review is for the fire roasted chiles and tortilleria! It's been a long time since I've gone to this grocery store. I used to come and get the fire roasted green chiles and the in-house made tortillas. In the past, I would've given this place a 2 star for disorganization and dirtyness. To my surprise, it was clean and put together plus they have opened up a restaurant that served Mexican bebidas, menudos, posoles, etc. My son was intrigued with someone de-thorning the nopales (cactus pads). "Do you eat that?" He asked the man. The man nodded and pointed to the cubed ones. I decided to buy a bag to cook at home. I'm not a big fan, but I'd eat it. Then, I picked up some flour tortillas and street style corn tortillas that freezes well as left overs. One of the workers pointed us towards the indoor gateway to the restaurant. The chiles were right before the entrance in the refrigerated section. The small canned version doesn't do the chile justice--but it's convenient to use. I just grabbed the $2 per bag fire roasted jalapenos without looking and assuming that it's the hatch green chile. So, look before you take! I wasn't disappointed with the roasted flavor when I used it as one of the condiments for my chicken and fish tacos. We love horchata. It was hard not to order one after my son and I peeked through and saw those plastic barrels full of ice cold juices! It was a little bland, which made me want to make some at home. I have to go back and get the fire roasted green chiles! If you go for that, it will be worth the trip. read more

What a nice idea to sit and eat on their outdoor patio before you commence your shopping? I hate grocery shopping or any kind of shopping for that matter and it makes it that more enjoyable if you have something nice to look forward to. They usually have the Spanish radio stations here on the weekends so it makes for a truly enjoyable experience and you can pretend you are in Mexico. Maybe they are dueling with the Ranch market that is across the street, who knows. The prices on food is pretty low compared to the regular supermarket. They now give you the prices of Fry's and how their prices compare for each items. I bought this huge seedless watermelon for $4! It looked like an alien pod. They will fry your fish for you if you ask. The manager stopped and asked us how we were doing. A pretty enjoyable shopping trip. read more

I only buy tortillas from this location and this never used to happen. Packaging fresh tortillas is not rocket science. Please correct this or lose a 20 year costumer. read more

This is a decent place. They make fresh tortiallas, there's a little taqueria. It's fairly inexpensive. There aren't a lot of workers running around so if you need something you may have problems getting help. The grocery store is pretty inexpensive and they have a good selection of food. Don't forget to stop and get some of their fresh salsa, the guac is delicious. read more

Had a carne assada torta. It was actually not bad. For the price it was real good. A few comments/observations... - Comically unorganized. There is no process for how this place works. I got my food but if they actually had something that resembled organization I would have got it a lot sooner. - The grill was a bit on the dirty side. - The meat while ok was a bit on the fatty/chewy side. Chopping it into smaller pieces would have been helpful - Not the cleanest dining area. Not really a 3, but not a 2 either. I gave them the benefit of the doubt. read more

I love August and September. Yes ... Hatch's green chiles are in season and this Food City roasts them outside of the store during these two months. I go every weekend and buy two pounds of the mild, which I think is really medium because it does have some heat. In fact when I de-skin them, my fingers are tingling afterwards. Beware if you get the hot or extra hot, definitely wear gloves. The roasted chiles sell for $1.50/lb. That's a price increase from last year when they were only $1/lb, but it is still cheaper than most other places. I recently had Daughter#1 pick up some fresh roasted ones from a different grocer and she paid $1.99/lb. If you go too early, before 11am, you'll have to wait. Occasionally, you may even get queued behind someone who has just ordered a whole bushel to be roasted or buys all the chiles that are in the plastic bins waiting to be sold. If you do, might as well place your order with the guy doing the roasting and tell him you will pick it up after you do some shopping inside the store. While inside the store, pick up some of the fresh flour or corn tortillas that are made onsite. I love the cute little 3 inch ones. There is also a food court with delicious entrees and on a hot summer day, you should get some fresh agua frescas, but everytime I am there I never see pina and that is my favorite fresca. Pick up some fruit or veggies in the produce department. It will probably be cheaper than other stores. Same for the meats. Interestingly, this store has some self service checkout lines, but for some reason, I find it to be slow. The scanners don't always work very well. It's always fun to talk to some of the people waiting in line to buy the chiles. You can pick up some good recipes and tips for using them. When it gets toward the end of the season, pick up several pounds and freeze them. You'll be glad you have them come winter when it is time for tamale making. Try not to tear into your bags of chile as you drive home. There will be a very enticing aroma from the fresh roasted chiles wafting thru the car! read more
