Decent. Seems like there are good deals price-wise. I went for lunch with a couple people and ordered the noodle combination in which the namesake comes from. Every item is a $1 and you can mix and match with a quite a few options to come from. For example, you could get noodles with won tons... of the none noodle sides they give you a little bit.. so maybe two won tons. I ordered a bowl with the flat noodles, Chinese greens, tripe and won tons over a simple flavor cube broth. Without tax, tip or any of that it was about $4 worth of food, I included a pic of it with this review. It was a decent amount of food, tasted okay, and the service was quick. I'd be willing to try it again with a different combination. They also had a special on curry squid, which they presented in skewers. I didn't really like it, it seemed like they boiled the squid in hot water and them poured Japanese curry sauce over it, it didn't really have any flavor. they have really good deals for lunch and dinner. i came here for dinner and my family and i ordered the lamb shank, prime rib, pork chop, sticky rice roll with soy milk, and lamb curry. some entrees come with soup, garlic bread, and a choice of milk tea or coffee (you can also do yin-yang style with coffee and milk tea together). the lamb shank and the milk tea is the most memorable from dinner. everything else was so-so. wouldnt mind coming back here again and recommending this place, considering how cheap my original order was --- $8.75 for the prime rib entree with a side of steamed veggies, cream of corn soup, garlic bread, rice, and milk tea. read more

No no no no. Rather take my typical hole in the wall, run-down building but great food and terrible service. So Food Stall Cafe has one, which is the terrible service. It looks nice from the outside and the inside. Very clean, modern; with comfortable chairs and booths, but don't let the dim lights and cheap prices fool you. Came here Saturday morning with my mom hoping to catch a quick breakfast before work. We ordered the breakfast combo for 3.59 where you get a choice of option A, B, or C plus another entree and a drink. I got the fried ham and egg with fried chicken rice noodles and a half coffee half milk tea drink. The ham and egg were alright, can't really mess up if you're just frying it. The noodles were hard, the soup was MSG and water, the veggies were still raw. The chicken wings tasted like soap. My coffee/tea was bitter with no condensed milk like regular Chinese places, and after asking for one the waitress gave us an attitude. My mom got to oatmeal with the ham and egg sammie, and a coffee. The oatmeal was cold and we asked her to heat it up. It took longer to heat it up than it took to make the actual oatmeal the first time around. The sammie was okay, the bread was mushy and the ham was salty. Her coffee also didn't come with condensed milk. The interior is clean, and the front looks like a bar area with the glasses hanging upside down, but dusty. It's dim lit inside. The noise level isn't so loud and there's a flat screen tv playing Chinese news at the time. There was only one waitress and some lady at the front collecting money. There is a man and woman bathroom, cleaner than your typical Chinatown restaurant. But at the moment I have a stomachache and I'm still at the place. I've seen some things here and it doesn't look very sanitary when it comes to preparing food. Never going to see me back here. Chinatown= cash only. Another grand opening for a cafe style like restaurant.....there are a few in this area....and I guess we needed another.... I like tofu so their spicy fried tofu hit the spot......Udon was a little on the soft side.....wonton noodles was ok....... Always nice to have a place to sit for a nice cold red bean drink......their prices are not cheap as some others..... I will have to go again to try the pork chops over rice and pineapple fried rice before I can update....... read more

Have you ever heard stories about friends going to Asia and only spending 20 dollars to feed a whole table. No need to go to Asia anymore because we found one right here in Oakland's Chinatown. For 3 ppl, we spent 14.20 for 4 iced teas and 3 chicken breast with black pepper sauce. It wasn't the best I have ever had( I think VIP in SF Chinatown is the best) but for the price, you can't go wrong. Service was a little slow but what do you expect right? The old saying stands, you get what you pay for. While this place is dirt cheap, you're probably not going to enjoy what you're eating. I've been here twice. Once when it was packed full with a wait outside, and the other, during a dead happy hour. Both times were bad experiences in different ways. The first time I was here, when it was a full house, they were considerably understaffed. The staff clearly didn't have defined roles, and the confusion was passed onto their customers. We waited at least 20 minutes to be seated when there was an empty table available. My family and I ordered, and it took at least another half hour for our food to come out. We finished our mediocre noodles and left and I never thought I'd give it a second chance. The second time was today, during happy hour, with a few buddies of mine looking for cheap eats. Their happy hour menu items look decent and were really cheap, but when the food came out, it was apparent that they did not take time to consider how their food tasted or looked. I had one of their noodle soups, the fried tofu, and a waffle. All of which came out to be less than 10 bucks. But I would've paid more for food that was edible. I didn't finish any one of those dishes and didn't bother taking it home because it just wasn't worth eating. Their service, both times, was terrible. The waitress was condescending because I didn't know how to read the menu items. If you're not a Chinese immigrant, don't even bother coming here. I don't mean to be a racist (I'm an American-born Chinese, fluent speaking Canto), but the waiters will have a problem serving English speakers because of their unwillingness to learn their own menu in English. I had come two times prior before yesterday. The first time, I remember ordering their food stall noodles. I chose ho fun with beef stew, choi sum, fried fish balls and a watermelon juice. Since the restaurant opened fairly recently, they seemed to need to work out some kinks in the service. Some of the waitresses looked like they had never served before. There were things being spilled/glass being broken and orders being mixed up around us. The noodles took a little time to arrive. It tasted kind of bland and the beef stew was kinda fatty and for some reason, I couldn't finish the whole bowl. The check came and I don't know how they calculated the price for my noodles, but it didn't seem to match the price I added up for the noodle and additional items. Oh well. The second time, it took awhile to flag down someone to take my order but I eventually ordered the chicken teriyaki rice and banana shake. It tasted pretty good because of the sauce. Yesterday I ordered the black pepper beef pan fried udon and a watermelon juice. I also ordered calamari rings. Seems there was a new special of $1.00 BBQ skewers posted on the wall from 3pm-closing. I may try it in the future if I end up back here. When I got my udon, it tasted like the chef went too heavy on the black pepper. That was all I could taste in my mouth after each bite. The calamari rings had so much fried batter that I could hardly taste the calamari. Getting the bill yesterday took over 10 minutes even though there was only a handful of tables and 2 waitresses, 1 waiter and the owner. Our waitress was not rude, she apologized for the wait and thanked us for the business, but the food was still average (or a little below) and the waitstaff still needs more experience. read more

I goto this place almost three times a week. You cant complain about the price. The happy hour menu is not much cheaper than the normal dish so just order what ever you feel like eating. Portion is very good for the price and all the meal comes with a drink. Onky reason is four star not five is their snacks. The portion is tiny. I've been here several times and had tried different items to give them a fair review. The real bargain before 3 pm is the $3.99 Black Pepper Chicken Rice or Spaghetti with free Lemon Ice Tea. If you order 2, then the price is $7.50 for both items -- it's discounted like $3.75 each, so bring a friend. Insider tip, don't order the streamed white rice, unless you like mushy rice. I tried it and it's like pureed rice that you would feed a baby with no teeth. Ugh. Since then, I've learned my lesson not to order any rice from this place, spaghetti is a much better choice. Although, the spaghetti is plain, it mixes well with the brown peppery gravy. Another great item is the $4.95 Baked Pork Chop with Spagheti or Rice with free drink (your choice). It's really good and worth every penny. It comes with 2 whole pork chops -- don't forget to order it with spaghetti. But don't expect the "taste" of the spaghetti that you've eaten your whole life, because this spaghetti is "Chinese spaghetti" which is al dente pasta in light tomato sauce. Luckily this dish has a heavy dose of tomato cheese sauce baked on top served in a silver dish. Be careful, the contents are hot (in temperature, that is). The $4.95 Korean Fried Rice with sunny side egg on top was nothing to be called "Korean." If they thought cooking fried rice with a little spiced Napa cabbage, white pepper, red pepper sauce and an overdose of sesame oil... this is NOT the way. The dish is generic and Koreans may be insulted, but hubby likes it. Those young waitresses (with no previous obvious experience), still can't get it down after months of being employed there since their grand opening. For example, I asked, in perfect Cantonese, (knowing that their English is very limited) for hot tea, instead got hot water. I asked for Ovaltine to find this Ovaltine is mixed with lukewarm water instead of milk. My ice water had no ice. Warning, you have to ask for your check, sometimes 2-3 times, which I find is bad. Sorry to say, but they're not focused to become good servers, and still incorrectly bring the wrong item to the wrong table. Otherwise, it's a must-try cafe for cheap eats. A plus is their clean updated bathroom with the clear glass sink. It's a must see. read more
