We tried both versions of the pork bánh mì, and each one was good in its own way although a little more pat'e meat and pickles would be nice. I had the best grilled pork banh mi of my life (#7). They bake AND smoke the meat which results in a distinct, signature flavor. They also get their bread custom made. As for the donut: Nothing inside, but nutty and slightly sweet. Sesame seeds make a difference! I can't wait to come back to try the lemongrass tofu banh mi as I've heard that the owner is vegetarian and this is her special order. The chicken noodle soup is also supposed to be amazing. Lastly, I want to support this business because the owner has a kind heart. She has a contract with the state of California to supply the prisons with her food. Good place to buy banh mi in the area. The nice gentleman and lady here are super nice. My go to is their combo and you can request to put the veggies on the side, and cut the sandwich in half if you're not going to eat them right away. This helps when you heat them in your toaster oven so you can add the veggies after. They also sell ready made Vietnamese drink desserts like the Three Red beans. Took my coworkers here. There were 7 of us. We made the mistake of not ordering ahead so it took us a while to get all the Vietnamese sandwiches. Nothing outstanding here. Not sure if the baguettes were fresh. They seem to have been warmed up and the cold cuts were just added on. It is unlike places in east Oakland or San Jose where they may their own fresh bread. Also bought a Vietnamese coffee. Didn't taste like phin coffee. Tasted a bit more like on the instant package side. They appear to have been hear for quite sometimes like decades. I've been working at a health center in Oakland Chinatown for 2 years now, and this place always does the job when I want a good Vietnamese coffee to help me get through the day. Honestly, the coffee is like magic! Cam Huong Bakery is a small shop on the corner of Webster and 11th Street, and it opens pretty early so I really love how it's conveniently there if I need that morning boost when I'm at work for 8 hours or more. The family that runs the spot is really nice and always and swift when making drinks or banh mi. I'll warn that the banh mi is a little pricey here (around $5), but considering that it's in Oakland, it makes sense in comparison to somewhere like San Jose where Vietnamese food is in abundance. Beyond the convenience and customer service, ever since protests in recent months, the shop has put up beautiful signs in support of Black Lives, which I personally think is pretty dope considering the signs are in different languages. I stopped by for che because I recently had some really good che from somewhere else. The kind I was craving was the fruity kind (with lychee, longan, jackfruit). But the version they had here did not have any fruits. There was coconut milk (thick), pandan jelly, peanuts, red+green beans, many other beans, I think sago (but clumped together). If you're into beans this one is beans heaven, but sadly not for me. I got about a quarter into the cup and found it too sweet. I won't get the che here again, but the bottled pennywort drink was good, although a little less sweet would have been better for my taste. Unbelievable that so many people gave this place a good rating. I never ever wished Karma on any vendor on yelp. This will be my first, and probably the last. Was in Oakland for a business errand. First time in the city. Saw this Asian bakery and decided to give it a try. This middle-age/old man behind the counter looked very friendly and said the BBQ buns are freshly made. I bought a few, and yes, they were warm to the touch. But, when I left and went back to my car to start eating them, I realized that the crust/bun was actually dry and stale. Yes, they probably re-heated leftovers from before. And, the filling was RANCID. BBQ tasted SOUR, and smelled fermented. This is absolutely unethical in my opinion. I took a second bite only to make sure I wasn't imagining the sour taste and I smelled it up close to my nose. It was definitely leftovers that had gone bad. That was it, my stomach started churning and... I also bought 3 mooncakes. As I had to rush to attend to my errand, I didn't check the receipt until I left the area. In total, the bill came up to $25++. HOW? I asked for a receipt but all he printed out was the total bill. He did not itemize the purchases. This place is not only unhygienic, it's unethical. They made it to order, which was nice. However, the bread was overly toasted and crunchy and there was barely any meat. Flavor-wise though, it was a decent sandwich. Somethings Fishy! In general I love Vietnamese sandwiches. I was nearby on Jury duty and thought I would treat myself to a BBQ pork sandwich. The bakery is walking distance from the courthouse. They do allow credit card transactions for amounts over $10. I thought I would add a small box of almond cookies (who doesn't like almond cookies?) To add another $5 to my $6 sandwich to pay with credit card. The sandwich was much smaller than what I am used to getting in the South Bay area. I could have overlooked that had the sandwich been good. There was an overwhelming smell of fishing the sandwich. I've had many BBQ pork Vietnamese Sandwiches from many different places and NONE of them had the taste or smell of fish. I was hungry so I just ate the mini sandwich. I thought the almond cookie would make up for it. Unfortunately it too smelled of fish and did not have the usual rich buttery flavor of every other almond cookie I have had. It had more of the consistency of a meringue cookie. Bottom line if you are nearby for Jury duty and want to treat yourself for doing your civic duty skip this place. Combination with Cha Lua #6 - tasty and hits the spot, the meat is a lot more fluorescent and the pate has a lot more Red 40 than Ba Le, also the bread is not that great. The pickled daikon is plentiful and on point though! A decent substitute BBQ chicken - decent, marinated with soy sauce and sugar I believe pickled daikon content on point as well. Chicken did taste old compared to ba le's lemongrass chicken Bahn coun - thick and gritty skin, but all the fixings inside. The pepper are super hot, the french bread warm and fresh out of the oven. If you need a coffee or pastry they offer those too including chinese bakery items like cocktail buns. The dessert drinks look pretty good too though I have yet to try them. If you're on a tight budget, this is perhaps your best bet in all the San Francisco Bay Area. Since they are located in Chinatown, parking is street parking (meter) or at the nearby parking garage. I ordered the combination banh mi for about $7, which is decent pricing. The sandwich is fairly big and may be 2 meals if you save the other half for later. At this particular location, they skimp on the meat so I paid $7 for mostly veggies and the bread. I bought two sandwiches one day and the total came up to $9 and the lady said that there was a $10 minimum otherwise a charge to use your credit card. This bakery supplies bread for the Cam Huong Restaurant down the street known for their various bahn mi (vietnamese sandwiches)... it used to be bakery only (cookies, chinese buns, moon cakes) but now makes sandwiches like the other location (except salmon) with no line! Ordered the barbecue chicken sandwich and it was yummy...roll was crunchy on the outside (yes, you'll make a mess eating at your desk!) and soft inside accompanied with pieces of bbq chicken, pickled, julienne carrots/daikon along with jalapeno and cilantro...for $3.50 it was a flavorful, inexpensive lunch and would definitely recommend. Baked goods...i got 2 pineapple buns which are my fave and sadly, they've been sitting in the hot box more than 1 day....dry, and hard...sad....i can't vouch for the other baked goods but to me, the pineapple bun is telling as it was a whole tray of them....stale...not worth warming in the microwave so tossed. shame! The grilled pork banh mi was already mediocre, both in portion size and price ($6), but it became totally unacceptable as my daughter found a 6" long hair intertwined with the vegetables.
