Store is clean and bright inside. Staff is hit and miss. Sometimes they are relatively friendly, other times they look at you like you're the enemy. Prices are average, but nothing too get excited about. If you happen to be driving by and you need a grocery store this place can be ok. Selection is a bit subpar - - very little variety by California grocery store standards. The worst thing about this grocery store is the sometimes drunk stoned clientele. I stood behind someone in line who was too drunk to even stand up straight. Many workers weren't wearing a mask when my boyfriend and I came in around 11am on a Saturday. Two guys in the frozen aisles were restocking frozen foods with no masks and when I brought it up to another worker, the lady just greeted them and went on her way like nothing was wrong. Some other workers were barely covering their chins/mouths with masks. We ended up leaving without any groceries because as dirty of a place this grocery store ALREADY IS, I can't imagine what they are/aren't doing to prevent COVID-19 from spreading in this store. read more

I would give this store a minus if I could. I have never in my life been so humiliated by a stores employee before. I'm unsure who to contact but I plan on suing store as well as employee who assulted me with a shopping cart and openly accused me of shoplifting when they had no basis for doing so. I enjoy that it's completely unpretentious and very diverse. Lots of families, and on the whole a non-drama shopping experience. Cheaper than normal-cost grocery stores, but still with a solid selection of products. High-quality vegetables, and even some organic produce available too. They have all the mainstream products, as well as a range of spices and 'ethnic' foods. Only complaint is that the bakery section is very white-flour/white-sugar, and the cheese / egg section is kind of lackluster. Otherwise definitely recommend! read more

If you want a mask less experience this is the disgusting store for you. The staff do not inform shoppers to wear masks, and while I was there the workers and the manager herself refused to cover their noses and mouths. I asked the person who was supposed to be in charge what the protocol was for the establishment and was treated as if the problem was me. Other staff refused to put on masks which explains why the shoppers behave the way they do. I appreciate the prices of the necessities available but I do not believe it's worth it to get COVID-19 in the process. If I can report this non compliant petri dish of filth I will. I'm reading all of the reviews wondering who people keep referring to this location as 'ghetto'. Is it because people of color shop here, or is it because of the stigma that is attached to my city (Oakland) thanks to KTVU? Either way, I visit this location on an average of twice a week. The most recent was last night as I needed to make a last minute run for sun dried tomatoes. Living in Alameda now, this location is super convenient. Sad sad store...self checkout line has 4 stations with half being used by people who don't know how to use them and an irritated/annoyed employee always. We were probably like the 8th person in that line when we got here. We stood in that line trying to purchase a Christmas tree and by the time we got up to the checkout station we were told we needed to get in a regular line, mind you, was only ONE line available with approximately 15 people. The cheap prices keep you coming back. $1.49 for a bag of frozen hashbrowns, $2.50 for a box of cereal that costs $5.39 elsewhere! Bruh, this store is perfectly situated in the hood and perfect for me when I'm low on hashbrowns. In all seriousness, this store is no Trader Joes, Safeway or even Pack N' Save. It's its own brand of ghetto grocery. Don't get me wrong though, I make at least one trip every couple of weeks here. I can't help myself. But I know exactly what to expect when I go. Reliably inexpensive products, long lines, and a stench that I fear will seep into my clothing if I stay inside too long. All in all, this place is good for what it is... oh! I timidly pull into the ghostly FoodMaxx parking lot. It starts to drizzle. In my gym clothes I hurry into the foreboding entry way with my obese shopping cart. Then I hear the gentle spray of produce misters and wiz past the giant pallets of Doritos to the masses of fresh goods. I was impressed by how good some of the produce looked. I was also impressed that there was a nice display of organic offerings. I was most impressed with how CHEAP it was. The trick is to be willing to buy what looks good rather than a specific produce list. Also know that it is probably already at it's peak. Chop and freeze anything you wont use in the next 2 days. Sure you have to hunt around in the onions for the best looking ones, but nothing that my Asian market trained eye can't deal with. 3 bunches of green onions for $0.98?! Yes please *chops and sticks in freezer*. Also, great deals on canned goods (stocked up on my beloved Spam Lite--also tomatoes and black beans...much less sexy than Spam Lite)! I also thought the turkey thighs looked great so $4 later, I had 2 of those. Chobani yogurts, and lite shredded cheese? Got those too. Why only 2 stars? The bread section seemed just shy of repulsive. Overall experience is overwhelming, intimidating, and down right time consuming. I did check all the dates very carefully, since I know it is a discount store. There was quite a bit of produce that looked pretty unappealing. If I were to come back I would stick to things that don't really go bad (canned/dried foods/toilet paper), and select produce. I probably will not be buying meat or dairy there again, just because I have to eat it so fast before it goes bad. Overall, if you are not a Costco member and you are looking for 20 lbs of meat for today's bbq or you are restocking your bomb shelter, then I suggest this place. Also if you are on a very tight budget, this might be a good option. But it isn't the most comfortable shopping experience. I probably will not be returning anytime soon. I normally will return to 3 star places, so I don't think I feel right giving FoodMaxx 3 stars. read more

note: review written when it was a lucky's, now it's a foodmaxx. same corporate owners. color me purple but i didn't get the bad service/bad attitude/bad vibes some reviewers got in this Food Maxx that was Lucky's. parking lot was jammed with cars, store jamming with people, all the lanes were open, most had 3 or less people in line. what usually took 15 minutes at another food maxx took only 5 minutes here. got only purified water @.88 and lactaid @4.15.(4.49 at safeway) the youthful workers were energytic, smiles all around, and very helpful. forget to get a lotto ticket since i was on a roll. Being a "white suburbanite," I've used this store and have had no particular problems with it. True, some of the staff are straight-forward, no-nonsense people (that doesn't make them rude), and others still need training (being naive and having the self-confidence to be wrong is ALSO not rude). Rude is being taught to act kindly to others and not caring that you are doing the opposite of what you've been taught. I also really hate the word "ghetto" when used to describe people. The staff here are NOT "ghetto." Have some tolerance of cultural differences. After all, what really counts is that the food you are looking for is available, good quality, and fairly priced. If you have a problem with a particular staff member, bring it up to the manager so that person can have some additional training. read more

When Food Maxx took this space over from Lucky's, they eliminated the fresh food section! Sad! That's like half the point of going to a grocery store for me. Also, this new store is pretty unfriendly to people that are shopping for one. I think I saw a ten-pound bag of carrots. No joke. If you want a five-pound bag of no-brand shredded cheese, you're in luck. Baby argula? Nope! And the only fresh garlic that wasn't black or brown was the pricey organic garlic. Plus, this store just feels like a big-box home improvement store instead of a grocery store now. Heavy-duty food shelving in safety yellow? No thanks. I was here for the first time on 12th April 2015 at around 12:30 pm. I did a pretty big grocery shopping. Back to the check out in register number 10, a cashier named nick treated me as though I was at their doorstep begging. He was so arrogant and haughty that It seemed as if he was the BIG BOSS of food maxx. I felt pissed off by this little Asian chap. I immediately approached to another cashier:a lady so kind and helpful. Upon listening to my story she even gave me the mgrs number. I called him but he never responded me. CHECK THE FOOD AND DATES BEFORE YOU BUY! I was super happy the first time I realized it was back, but since then, every time I go to buy something there has been something rotting or molding that is not entirely visible at purchase. Last week I bought small Fuji apples in a bag, I checked them over, took them out to check for softness all seemed fine. I get home and go to eat one and it is brown inside (hard on outside no dents). I figured it was a one off thing. Second day, bring 2 to work, same thing. Yesterday 5/18/13, I bought Orowheat English Muffins, date on bag is May 31st. This morning, I go to eat my english muffin, and there are mold spots, I look at the rest of the batch, they all have subtle mold on the tops of them. I am sure it is not the worker's fault, but there was also Yogurt I intended to buy that was already expired! Be warned. PHARMACY: I have been using there pharmacy for about 6 years now. I have watched go from okay to right down bad. I went there yesterday after work to pick up my medication. first I had to stand there for about 5 mins with two people behind the counter who looked at me but could not speak to me for reason. finally a lady walked over to as though I was bugging her and asked for my name. She gave my medication and told me the price. I asked why so expensive she gave this rude answer talk to your insurance. I just paid a lot of money for a vary rude experience. This store went from having great quality of foods to being downright gross and disgusting! One I heard a bunch of Stewart Littles have taken up residence here and I've even noticed little bite marks in the some of the foods (I kid you not!). The quality of the vegetables, fruits and meat here is old and gross. I don't know if this is ploy to drive the store out of business but if so it is working! People have a right to sanitary foods and this store would get a 'F' rating from the Health Department I bet. Used to be a Lucky's Sav-On... then Albertson's... and then Lucky's again, and now, a Food Maxx. It's a really nice and big store, located right off the free way. Only downside is that it's hard to head southbound-880 from this location. It's possible, but you gotta go over the overpass, and go around some side-streets. Getting off the freeway here is a breeze, north and southbound. The actual store itself is pretty large and has pretty wide isles. It can be a bit disorganized at times, but they usually have very competitive prices on everything. The meats and produce are pretty inexpensive as well. I like that they have some of the more "ethnic" meats available to purchase here. Don't linger too long here... like most of the other reviews have mentioned, it IS in the ghetto. read more

I was in the check out line and the checker was extremely rude to me because I asked him not to let my groceries go down the wrong way into someone else's groceries where they might accidentally get my stuff. He got upset and extra animated suggesting I was the problem, not anything else. I was willing to forget this incident but now he has got other checkers making faces at me and treating me like dirt. I used to come to this store a lot when it was Lucky's. Since it became FoodMaxx, the store looks so much dumpy. I really don't find prices to be that great, but I don't buy stuff like cereals, cookies, etc. and pretty much avoid the middle isle. Produce I buy at farmers market or organic store, and this store doesn't seem cheaper for the stuff I need, nor does it have the selections that I need. My go to store when i used to do my pop up taco tuesday at a local bar as the Food Maxx value meats came in a large bulk and didn't break the bank. The cuts here are pretty decent as secondary store goes (food maxx, max value, pak n save, etc). The main reason to come to a grocery store like this is the same reason you go to Smart & Final... everything is at a discounted price and you compromise mostly on the freshest produce compared to other grocery stores but, i don't really mind as i buy produce and meats that i'm going to cook that evening anyways. Words to the wise don't buy meats here on the weekends as the butchers don't work on those days. I usually come here to get booze now as it's usually on the day but, this place gets hella packed on game days, holidays and just on weekends in general. If you're tailgating for the Raiders game come here and try to get the bulk meats as they usually run really cheap for a variety of cuts. read more

I shop here regularly, but only for certain items. They are reasonably priced in their produce section, but don't seem to have a very large variety to choose from. The meat department on the other hand is pretty decent, the variety is very diverse, many hard to find items like organ meats and cheeks, as well as "standard" cuts(Chops/Steaks/Ground), all at a fair price per lb. This place is just too much. The parking lot is always busy, people and cars going in and out. Also, shopping carts flying everywhere, I have seen carts hit cars before. No bueno. The prices are reasonable here, reason why it always tends to be busy. I have gone during the day & at night, and still long lines. Only like three cashiers open. Another no bueno. Pleasantly surprised by this place given how awful all of the other options for large grocery stores in east Oakland are. There are great Mexican and Asian groceries around but they are limited and don't have some of my staples. This place does, and great prices. Huge variety of produce for our diverse neighborhood including produce, vegetarian stuff, traditional stuff, stuff I've never heard of, booze and home products. Cashiers can be slow, or let's say relaxed, but always friendly, lines can be long but still I find this better than the awful oakland safeways and expensive farmer joes. read more
