You can't not like Food Smart. It's open 24 hours, it has fair beer prices, a good grocery selection, and even a little post office. And for a convenience store, boy they sure have a lot of liquor to choose from. When I lived nearby, this was my go-to for impromptu cooking/drinking sessions where one or two ingredients/bottles were missing. For that, I love the place. Food Smart just expanded and is getting better all the time. 5 years ago it was just chips and alcohol. Now they carry (limited) organic produce and fancy vegan and vegetarian prepared foods. Also, the post office inside is 24 hours (wow)! In the future, I hope they will begin to carry even more fresh produce. The neighborhood really needs them to transition into a real grocery store rather than just a convenience store. read more

This place is a combination of a Liquor store / Small grocery store. It has most of the bare essentials. And then some. It has a small fruit and vegetable section. A cold section. Cat food. Canned stuff. Ect. It's 24 hours which is a huge plus. It's almost the perfect place. read more

This store is the best!. For a small store they have a wide variety of food, including specialty foods like vegan and no gluten. They get anything a customer asks for. The staff is outstanding. Even when there's a line, the staff moves it along quickly so there's hardly any waiting time. They're always pleasant, too. I recommend it highly. read more

My wife has bought whole chickens on 3 separate occasions over the last couple months from foodsmart which have been rancid, even though they are labelled to be prior to the expiration date. Their customer service has been sub-par. Many items are severely overpriced. That said (and a lot of negatives unsaid), this place has the most stuff in the neighborhood and have consistently been getting more items in stock. read more

The Foodsmart opened the same weekend that I moved into my apartment, however many years ago. I recently moved to a different neighborhood, but considered staying solely for the FS. On my first visit, the lovely ladies behind the counter gave me a box of macaroni for free because I didn't have any cash on me (and it was too little $ to charge). The groceries are certainly not enough to get you through the week, but if you have to cobble together dinner, they'll get the job done. I also ran into my neighbors there all the time, and began to think of it as a little neighborhood meeting place. Great vibes, decent selection, friendly service. If I was able to give this location zero stars I would have. The market itself is nice but DO NOT go to the USPS there it's a waste of time. The service is terriable. The man working there is so rude and disrespectful it's shameful usps would hire him. He answered the phone with such an attitude. He did not help me with an issue that was caused on their behalf. It's 2am-ish. I've slugged back a few beers since getting home a couple hours ago and my stomach starts rumbling with the familiar "why are you only feeding me liquid?" complaint. New to the 'hood, I hoof a few blocks to the 24-hour foodsmart, ignoring a vagrant's nicotine cravings on the corner. Three people man the counter in a store populated by myself and another hipster, chatting in some unfamiliar language as I browse. Decent beer selection, I'm first to note, with specials on Beck's and several other tasty beers. A unbelievable amount of wine, but then again I am in Logan Square. Chips and snacks abound, so my stomach calls for some Cheez-It's and i grab a bag of blue-corn tortilla chips for another night. Eggs for tomorrow morning at a good price, and they do have milk, cheese, and juices for morning-after cravings. Good to know, but not for right now. My wanderings bring me to a "utility" aisle, where I grab a steno pad (cheap) next to some "emergency" candles and some rather price-inflated pens. My mind is working this whole time, trying to discern if I'd be better off shopping at a larger store regularly, or if this will become a frequent haunt. As I make my tortuous route towards the register, I note freshly made pasta salads, veggie dips and sandwiches in a open refrigerator. A 180 reveals a wide variety of bread, including pitas, and I start considering a pita pocket sandwich with cheese for the AM. No, I tell myself, keep that money in your pocket. But I do fall for a bunch of fresh looking bananas (rather pricey) nestled near peaches and other fresh fruit near the register. Under $10 for some decent supplies, and I'm considering the lotto machine on my way out. Too bad I left my cash at home. I'll be back, I'm sure, but only under similar circumstances. They are a lifesaver when your bf drinks the last of the milk and all you want is a cup of coffee but there's no milk. So you walk here, if you live locally, and buy milk. It's nice because even though it's in Humboldt Park, I don't feel like anyone will stab me when shopping. They've got fruit and vegetables, and random little things. Prices are a little higher, but I guess it's a convenience fee. Just add a dollar to what everything should cost and you get the idea. read more

Great 24/7 shop! No way you can beat the selection of booze or food at a late night corner store. Staff is always friendly as well.

I lived in this neighborhood for two years and, although I didn't enjoy my time in Chicago, I greatly appreciated Food Smart and the friendly, helpful, and kind staff. The management truly seems to go out of its way to hire decent employees, such as James and Modesto. They're all nice, though. It was kind of embarrassing how often I would go there (!), but I didn't have a car and it was right around the corner from me. They always had what I needed in terms of food and other items. Props for having a post office on the premises, too! Good wine and beer selection. Management is very receptive to any suggestions. There can be some shady characters who hang around outside the store at night, but the staff doesn't tolerate these people harassing the customers. Thank you, Food Smart! read more

This store just gets better and better!! New food items come in daily. LARGE amount of local food and produce (pies from right down the street). I DO NOT believe the prices are that high! (Have you been to Trader Joe's lately? Same products, cheaper price...even fresher in a lot of cases!) Clean, clean clean....And love the 'silly' variety of items...where can I buy imported figs, organic produce and plastic farm animals all at one time. 2 kinds of coconut water? And ask John for anything you want- he looks and finds it at a good price. You have to remember that he is a small business owner and the groceries have mass buying power. AND cannot say enough about the Post Office...the BEST!!! The people ALWAYS smile and wow! isn't that nice???? I could go on and on, but finding NEW GREAT tasting, local and regional items every time I go in...even holiday favorites. THANKS JOHN!!! read more
