Another long week at work and mom guilt sets in for coming home late again, so I offer to pick up dinner and then have to figure out something exciting to make our stay at home weekend plans a little more interesting. Seems like a trying a new restaurant would do the trick, especially if it serves spicy and tasty foods. I ordered $5 scallion pancake (kids liked it at first, but then didn't, so we happily ate them), the $12 fried chicken ala carte (loved the basil and crispy toppings on top of the perfectly fried chicken; even the kids loved the sparsely topped pieces), and the $12.45 trio cup chicken ala carte (the next day, realized how much I loved those garlicy pieces that I didn't see at first under the thick rich sauce, though I wasn't a huge fan of the rubbery skin, but just discarded them). Prices were super reasonable and portions were very generous. My friend suggested this place located in Pearl Kai shopping center. I haven't even heard of this place before she suggested it, but after reading the reviews I was eager to give it a try. We met here around noon and it was pretty empty with only 1 other party. We started with some appetizers first which were stir fry garlic veggies, sweet potato fries with lihing mui, and bao bun. After the appetizers, we were pretty full so we shared a beef noodle soup-braised. The food was nothing short of amazing! I mean, I could come here just for the appetizers alone. We pass by this place all the time and finally stopped in for an early dinner. Lot's of free parking very close to the entrance. We read lot's of good reviews on Yelp. It opened at 4:30pm. We were the fourth party in line. I felt very save to dine-in because they had contact tracing and followed all the guide lines for Covid-19 including table to table spacing. All the employees had good attitudes and greeted us when we made contact. Our waitress Nalani was very polite and helpful. She guided us through the menu because we told her that we were experiencing our first Taiwanese fusion restaurant. Owner Ellen came over a few minutes later filled our waters and made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. She briefed us in the history of the restaurant and their sister restaurant Egghead which we frequent quite a bit. We ordered the Cow Wow Braised Noodle Soup. It was very tasty and the braised beef just fell off the bone. The noodles had the perfect texture and consistency. We also had the Classic Original Beef Noodle Soup. The soup base had the taste of an Oxtail Soup. It was very tasty and very flavorful too. Li Hing Mui Sweet Potato Fries. At first, that question my mind, Li Hing Mui on sweet potato fries?! Service was great and everything on the menu sounded so good. We had a great experience here but we were disappointed with our shrimp dish. Unfortunately, the shrimps weren't deveined and we just couldn't stand to eat it. I think shrimps should always be deveined especially that size so we had to send it back. They didn't charge us which was nice but I will not be ordering the shrimp if I ever go back. I had the wonton soup and it was super delicious. The fooki bao was so yummy, too, I wish I had more on the plate. The double delight potstickers had great deep flavors and the wrapper had the right thickness and texture. I had a bite of the Monster Pork Chop which is deep fried pork chop packed with secret seasonings (BFT mild spicy), white rice, braised tofu and veggies. This was also tasted good. The Porkchop Laksa is the Chef's special prepared curry coconut creamy broth with fried pork chop, sweet heart egg, fresh lime, cilantro, green onion, mint, and soft thin noodle. I tasted the noodles and the broth. Both was good. The noodles ono. The curry and coconut in the broth was light and not overpowering. The drinks were P.A.O. Iced Tea (Passion. Apple. Orange. Jasmine green tea) and Ferrero Rocher Frappe (Blended vanilla ice cream with hazelnut chocolate flavor, and a hint of Osmanthus black tea aftertaste). I ordered the P.A.O. I'm a fan! Been looking for a solid popcorn chicken (aka boom boom chicken) place for awhile and finally got to try this place. I also ordered the pork belly with pickled mustard and grandpa's rolling pancake. Keeping in mind that I got takeout and drove 30 min back to town, everything was delicious. The food was still warm and the chicken was still crunchy by the time I got home! The only thing that didn't fair too well was pancake which got a little soggy and deconstructed on the ride back. It's been MONTHS since I wanted to come to Fooki, a Taiwanese themed restaurant that opened in July 2020 and has been surviving this pandemic. I've seen numerous photos and came across some reviews by friends that just led me wanting to come here. I've tried to arrange multiple visits here but sadly it never capitalized but then it's Auntie (Nadine C.) to the rescue. I voiced to her my wanting to try Fooki, where she previously did a take out for her family. We decided to surprise a mutual friend's upcoming birthday. Date was set and I was all excited. Located on the far Ewa side of Pearl Kai Shopping Center next to Jiffy Lube, Fooki offers Taiwanese fusion cuisine and bubble teas. We met up for an early dinner with hopes to beat the dinner crowd. Upon entry, these is a sign posted advising you not to enter until you've checked in with the staff, where they check your temperature. I saw that Nadine had already arrived and walked over to our table. I pretty much had an idea of what to order but those plans got even better when Nadine suggested we order family style. This way I'll be able to sample more items off their menu. Here is a summary of what we sampled: Grandpa Rolling Beef (4/5) This is your standard Taiwanese beef roll with sliced beef shank, hoisin sauce, sliced cucumbers in a scallion roll that was grilled nicely with a crust. Flavorful with texture contrasts. This was a great way to start the meal. Came with some alfalfa sprouts. Boom Boom Chicken (4/5) Large chunks of breaded boneless chicken with a unique semi-spicy scallion topping. It kinda looked like crushed crunchy Cheetos that did have a slight kick. The chicken came with a spicy mayo dipping sauce on the side. Double Delight Potstickers (5/5) These housemade triangle dumplings were made-to-order and came to our table piping hot. It was stuffed generously with minced pork, veggies and clear noodles. It was juicy and very satisfying. Also came with a soy dipping sauce and some alfalfa sprouts on the side. Highly recommended. Monster Pork Chop (4/5) A generous slice of pork chop that has been breaded and deep fried until perfection. It came to us also piping hot and was sliced up that was ideal for sharing. This was also topped off with the orange topping that resembled in the Boom Boom Chicken. The same spicy mayo was served on the side. Fooki Belly Baos (4.5/5) A pair of baos that were stuffed with a generous slice of pork belly came with some pickles, peanuts and Chinese parsley. This was very hearty and I loved the texture contrast. I had to open and investigate what was inside after that great first bite. Jajiang Noodles (3.5/5) These were your standard noodles with a thick soybean sauce but the noodles were a tad overcooked to my liking. It was odd to have alfalfa sprouts to mix the noodles with. I did like the pseudo-meat like protein, most likely tofu or gluten. It looked like beef but when eating, you realized it's not so. I did appreciate the slight spicy kick to the dish. Milk Tea Flan (1/5) After seeing their post on IG, we just had to try this new dessert. For me personally, it fell flat. The flan was dense and not eggy at all. It lacked the milk tea flavor I was looking for. I was disappointed with golden boba as I was expecting popping boba with milk tea inside. I had high expectations and this fell flat. Service was above average. The staff on the floor came to our table multiple times to check on us, removed excess plates and refilled our water glasses. It was great to see them with people coming to pick up carry out orders. Overall, Fooki is a great addition in adding Taiwanese food to Oahu. They can be can be viewed as overpriced street food. I went to Taiwan couple of years ago and loved these food items that were at a fraction of the cost here. I wouldn't mind coming back to venture more items on their menu. read more

Fooki? What's Fooki? It's a Bubble Tea / Taiwanese place located at Pearl Kai. A couple of my friends and I wanted to try there, so went on a weekday after work around 5pm. It's good thing that we went early, because as we were leaving, there was a line outside the door. We ordered Grandpa rolling beef, double delight potstickers, beef scallion noodles, boom boom chicken, scallion pancakes, and yes, li hing mui sweet potato fries. It BYOB there with a corkage fee, but we just got a Strawberry Mojito Mocktail. The food came out really fast and it came on all disposable plates. Sadly with Social Distancing /Covid-19 I settled with take out - ordering ahead of time and picking up at the convenient window located right outside the entrance. Seeing everyone's yummy photos i decided Boom Boom Chicken. I loved the juicy crispy/tasty chicken dipped in a mayonnaise sweet type sauce. The rice is topped with crispy Toppings i think there's carrots and spices and yummy crispy Thai Basil. You get some baby bok choy a couple baby tomatoes and i think it's pickled Aburage. There were lots of wontons in the bowl and I could taste the chunks of shrimp in them. The only thing I didn't really like was that the noodles were a bit overcooked for my liking. The couple told us it was also their first time visiting, and everything they ordered was really good! Lanie was our server, answered our questions and we placed the following order: Fooki Bao ($11.00/2 pcs) - Braised thick-cut pork belly, pickled mustard, pickled veggies, cilantro, crushed sweet peanut powder, & sesame seeds on a steamed bun. - My favorite item. If I lived any closer, I could get this on the daily. 2 pieces would be enough for a meal for me, and it is delicious!! BoomBoom Chicken ($14.00/ala carte) - Fried chicken packed with Asian spices and served with basil. - Honestly I was too stuffed with the noodles, wonton and bao to have much space for the chicken. My kids, however, made quick work of it as soon as we got home. Fooki Wonton Noodle Soup (Hearty Braised $14.00) - House-made shrimp and pork wonton with water chestnut & veggies. - The broth is so deep... it's hard to explain, but so good!! I first heard about Fooki, a Taiwanese fusion restaurant, mid-2020 on Hawai'i News Now's Foodie Fix feature and thought how courageous the owners were to open during the pandemic. Also, while watching the feature, my taste buds were piqued by the coverage of dishes called "COW WOW noodle soup", "Holy Pork Nacho", "MaLa Wonton" and "Pineapple Fried Chicken Burger". I put this new restaurant into the back of my mind until I started seeing more of my Yelp Friends doing takeout from or having dine-in experiences in this Pearl Kai Shopping Center restaurant. The other day, we had planned on shopping at the Pearlridge Center in the morning and as we drove past the Pearl Kai Shopping Center on Kamehameha Highway, we noted the location of Fooki in between the Jiffy Lube and the Vitamin Shoppe. There were a lot of free parking stalls nearby and in front of Fooki which makes their location conveniently accessible. After completing our shopping, we returned to the Pearl Kai Shopping Center just in time for their 11 am opening. At the entrance, we saw and read their COVID-19 safety guidelines posted at the takeout window. I rang their buzzer at the window as we were directed to check-in at the window before entering. A female worker, Nalani, came to the window to take our temperatures as I completed their contact tracing form. Nalani allowed us into the restaurant and immediately seated us with menus. The flat noodles resembled linguine which were a great balance to the bold spiciness of the broth that we selected. The bowl was beefed up with chunks of tender braised beef shank, bouncy yet melt-in-your mouth tendons and a big beef rib bone. There were vegetables and a soft-cooked egg called "sweetheart egg". $18.50 -Beef Scallion Noodles: This bowl of dry-fried thin noodles was topped by slices of tender braised and seasoned beef shank and julienned fried taro. There was an herbaceousness to this dry noodle dish as fragrant scallion-infused oil had been drizzled through. It's best to toss your noodles since the tasty sauce may have settled on the bottom of the bowl. I ordered this noodle bowl since I was wearing a light colored blouse and given my tendencies to share my food with my clothes, I dared not to share a chili pepper & oil sauce. $13 -Boom Boom Chicken: Seeing other photo posts, we were curious about this fried chicken dish. Other posts seemed to show this dish as darkly marinated and maybe dry chicken pieces. Instead, we received a lightly battered and golden brown fried chicken. The crisp yet tender and flavorful fried chicken pieces were accompanied by a ramekin of a mayonnaise-based dip. My husband who is a fried chicken aficionado ate most of this dish along with his COW WOW noodle soup. $12 Nalani was the sole server in this restaurant and during the hour we were dining-in, the restaurant filled while social distancing was maintained. She was friendly and attentive to everyone and brought everyone's orders hot and fresh from the kitchen in a timely manner. This restaurant is beautiful with its location & interior, it gave off a very industrial/rustic vibe on the inside, and they also have a very beautiful mural when you walk through the door. The food itself is a 10/10. Lots of flavor, didn't lack at all & it wasn't overpowering. Their ox rib soup was one of my favorites from this restaurant! Would come again 100%! First time coming here and I wasn't sure what to expect. I passed this place before and there were usually a few people waiting outside. Upon walking in, the staff were very polite and friendly. They made some good recommendations and we tried several of the more popular dishes. It's reasonably priced and everything tasted fresh and they all had a unique spin to it. This place is amazing. I can't say enough about the service, atmosphere, taste, and presentation. Recommend making reservations ahead of time. They limit to 60 or 90 minutes. Food comes out decently fast so no rush felt. The food is authentic, the meat quality is exceptional, and there are many food and appetizers to choose from. The noodles were 12 hr simmered and so rich in flavor. They also have fabulous drink options. Cold and hot teas and even boba too. Have been to Fooki twice already, so I'm ready to share all the details! Let's first start with the location. Located in the Pearl Kai Shopping Center right next to Vitamin Shoppe and Jiffy Lube. I believe this used to be a karaoke bar. The restaurant looks like it was probably fully renovated when Fooki took over. I absolutely love the decor! Concrete walls and floors, some painting on the walls and neon lights on the wall. Gives me all the "Big Trouble in Little China" vibes. The chairs are so cute and mismatched. Let's move on to the important stuff...the FOOD! The Cowow noodle soup is an absolute must if you eat here. I opted for the delicate broth because I shared with my daughter. You could order this dish spicy if you choose. The broth is so flavorful and yummy! There is a lot of tender beef in here and also some beef tendon. Had leftovers and the soup was even better the next day! The grandpa rolling beef was pretty good but it needs more sauce inside as it was a little dry. I love the holy pork nacho which is scallion pancake topped with a spicy ground pork with cheddar cheese and tomato on top. This was soooo good, I would totally eat this again!! The fooki belly bowl is braised thick cut pork belly with rice. The pork belly was super tender and delicious, very homey and comforting. The fooki baos have the same pork belly in them and are your standard bao bun but still very delicious!! Last thing we had was the boom boom chicken which is fried chicken. Nothing crazy or different here but a great compliment to any dish you order. They also have an array of drinks to choose from. Living on the West Side, I first discovered Fooki when my husband and I decided to pull over and eat dinner instead of sit in Oahu's stop and go rush hour traffic. Their food is consistently tasty, savory and mouthwatering. A lot of times, soup can leave you feeling still hungry but not at Fooki! The seafood laksa always hits the spot and the classic beef soup is perfect to satisfy my meat-hungry husbandʻs needs. The best part #1?? Fooki is kid-friendly! The servers are so friendly to our toddlers and give us small bowls, water in disposable cups and plastic utensils with extra napkins. Although they only have one bathroom stall, weʻve never had a problem eating out with a newly-potty trained toddler or a pregnant ladyʻs tiny bladder. The best part #2?? Their drinks are great. We came here for the first time for my coworkers birthday, and I have to say the service and food was great! We got here about 4:45pm with no reservations, but since we were early they were able to seat us right away with a 60 minute time limit because they had a lot of reservations. When you get there they sign you in and take your temperatures from a window and then come out to seat you. We all ordered strawberry mojito mocktails (which were were really good and would've tasted even better with alcohol lol, but it's BYOB), boom boom chicken, grandpa rolling beef, beef scallion noodles, scallion pancake, lihing sweet potato fries, and the double delight potstickers. The boom boom chicken kind of reminded me of chicken karaage but the topping on it was very salty. The grandpa rolling beef was so tasty and my favorite menu item! The beef in the scallion bowl was tender and it went well with the spicy sauce they give on the side. The scallion pancake is just like the Korean pancakes. The sweet potato fries were another hit dish! Which I was surprised because usually I like savory rather than sweet. And the potstickers were good but nothing to rave about. My friend also got the black sesame shake with boba and said it was really good! Our waitress was very nice and friendly. She explained all the dishes well and even gave her recommendations. She gave us a bunch a different sauces to try with everything we ordered. When we were leaving there were a lot of people waiting outside to be seated. When our oldest, now 25, was little he couldn't pronounce the "sp" sound so everything that started with "sp" became "f." We noticed Fooki while leaving Sears and knew we had to look it up on Yelp because, well, it reminded us of our kiddo. Fooki describes itself as vintage industrial, home style Vietnamese with a Western twist with friendly service. We'd agree with all of that! Fast, exceptional service, food, and drinks. It is a BYOB with corkage fees (see photos) but has a number of delicious Vietnamese teas and coffees. We loved everything about our visit here and will return to taste through the menu. I've been seeing posts about this place and had to try it. If you've also been seeing these posts and are debating whether or not to go, you should definitely listen to your gut and go. They seem to be known for the Cow Wow noodle soup, so I ordered that along with an order of the Fooki bao. They were both so good. The noodle soup had a lot of toppings in there, so it was definitely filling. The soup base is tasty but a little on the lighter side, which was pretty refreshing, especially since I had it for lunch. For take-out, they separate the soup from everything else for you to keep everything from getting soggy. I really liked the bao. The buns and the pork were nice and soft and were complimented by the crunchy texture of the toppings. The flavors had a bit of power from the pickled mustard, which was what made it so good. The online ordering was easy to use. There's a little take out window at the entrance of the restaurant. If you order online, you can just go there and they'll hand up your order. We came here after watching the sunset at the electric beach. Made a reservation via phone call right before we went. I ordered the signature cow wow noodle soup. They were very very generous about the beef. The beef was super tender and flavorful. For the spicy level, I chose mild and it was very manageable. It's a highly recommend! We also ordered the grandpa rolling beef. It was pretty good too. Have recommended this place to a couple of friends already and will continue doing so! read more
