This is truly unique for being both an exceptional hotel restaurant and being in that hotbed of culinary delights, Rancho Cordova. This is our second visit here as our first was Mother's Day Brunch 2007. The food then was very good but the service was very inconsistent which we attributed to the newness of the restaurant and so we had not returned. This time we came for a late minute Easter Brunch. While the price, $35.00 per adult, does seem a bit high, I like the fact that this is a barrier to entry for some and you do not have to compete with mobs at the big brunches you typically see at hotels at these special times. The service was still a bit spotty with various wait staff coming by and telling us they were going to come back with water glasses or a steak knife but never did along with bread plates but no bread. Trying to leave was also a challenge as we were presented a check at the end but no one ever came to close it out until I caught the eye of one of the management staff. They had a nice opening selection of cheeses, Italian sliced meats, salmon, fresh fruit and hand made pizza. We then had a choice of entrees. I picked the ribeye steak garnished with thinly sliced onion rings with side of a chili like bean dish in a ramiken and cut potatoes on the side. My dining parters ordered eggs benedict, a crab meat frittata, and a salmon frittata. I enjoyed my entree as everything was flavorful, however I found I could not finish it all after I had filled up on the starters that we soon followed by a seafood risotto and nice chicken soup in a light broth. The only negative comment on the food as the dessert did not seem to be up to the quality of the rest of the meal and chocolate fountain seem a little declasse when paired with fine dining, even at a brunch. We looked at the regular dinner menu and while the pricing seems also a little high, this restaurant gives us another location to bring friends to or even a business lunch. read more

Overpriced for ok food. First, the bread they served us was doughy in the middle and lacked any kind of flavor. Then, I ordered the salmon with vegetables and baked potato. The salmon was cooked perfectly, but the portion of the veggies were small, the potatoes were tiny and dry as if it were pre-made. My friend ordered a $9 cheesecake that was very small and as we all tasted it, it had a grainy texture. When we brought it to the waiter's attention, he admitted that it was frozen but the manager won't allow him to take it off the bill since we had eaten some of it. We had to each taste it. That's ridiculous! Charging us so much for a frozen cheesecake!? If you're trying to be a high-end restaurant, then food needs to be fresh and NEVER argue with the customer. This is sad if it's the best thing in Rancho Cordova! The best thing is the pizza. Overpriced wine, and not a good selection. The ambiance is stale, half sports bar, half want-to-be fine dining. It's not what we were expecting at all. The entrees were OK. The butternut squash ravioli was covered in sauted eggplant marinara--hard to understand the flavors with so much going on. The salmon tasted defrosted and past it's throw-out date, yucky! In fact, I think it was bad, because my poor husband who ate it prior to running a half marathon was ill the entire 24 hours after eating it... The limoncello cheesecake tasted stale as welI, or like the fridge?? I would recommend searching further if you're in the mood for a nice dinner. We've always enjoyed the Easter/Brunch buffets here in the past. This year they were offering a Mother's Day brunch ala carte menu and it was disappointing to say the least. Food was Ok. I've eaten here 3 times and feel that the food is 4 stars. The service definitely could be better which is why I feel the overall rating is low. Especially for this price point, the service is lacking. Food has always been pretty darn good. Caesar salad and salmon was really good. The Sunday breakfast buffet was really good too. $18 for adults and $9 for kids. The chef cooking the make to order omelette was on point. The omelette was cooked perfectly and they have a lot of ingredients to pick from. The bacon and sausage are really high quality. The fresh fruit was plentiful and perfectly ripe and flavorful. Great food at reasonable prices (for a hotel). We were somewhat taken aback by the lack of staffing on a Sunday at 2pm. Nobody was there at the hostess station -- it looked like they were closed. After waiting a few minutes, someone who looked like the chef came out of the kitchen and seated us. He was very friendly but we noticed he was the only person working there, except for the chef. We both shared the fried calamari, it was outstanding. They actually fry the greek olives and bits of lemon with the squid, which is a nice touch. You get a lot of squid for $6.50. Our entree for both of us was the "Parmesan encrusted Seared Ahi" which was served on a bed of risotto (creamed rice) and some nice vegetables that were perfectly al dente. The ahi was very flavorful and a nice sized portion for $15. We used a dining certificate for this visit, but my wife noted that she would be willing to pay full price at this restaurant. My first experience since Formaggio took over the lovely restaurant spot in The Marriot Rancho Cordova was lunch on a Monday. Hmmm, perhaps not the best time to try a new place. I got the feeling the Chef had the day off. When I arrived, my date was waiting for me and there was a bottle (no label, just a rubber stopper attached) of water at the table. The young, friendly server arrived and poured some water in my glass, (yellow glasses. I'm sure you can guess what it looked like) and told us about the specials. She seemed very knowledgeable and described the mushroom soup with flare. My date ordered the Bolognese and I ordered the steak sandwich. I was very appreciative of our server for letting me know that is was deli style beef, not exactly 'steak'. I decided on the chicken Caesar instead. I chose not to fill up on bread before my salad arrived but my date seemed to enjoy the olive oil and roasted garlic dip. Our dishes arrived and the Bolognese looked just as described. My Caesar was a tower of whole Romaine leaves with the dressing (very lite just as I had requested) tossed on and an ample amount of grilled chicken and shaved cheese. Our server offered fresh grated Parmesan and topped off our yellow water. My date dove into his pasta and said it was wonderful. I took a bite of the grilled chicken to find that it was cold. I don't mean that it was room temperature, but refrigerator temperature. I was a little disappointed but it did have a great grilled flavor. I did have to remove a few bites worth of wilted lettuce that were quite obvious but was pleased over all. I declined dessert and coffee but my date enjoyed a lemon and raspberry custard looking treat that was covered in whipped cream. Perhaps I will return for dessert and coffee another day. I was quite please to see the added bar at the south-west corner of the restaurant. It seemed cheerful and inviting with two mounted teles. The patio, which you could view from the bar, looked like a great place to hang out with friends for cocktails since they provided plenty of cushy seats and heaters. read more

We spend the night at the Marriot in Rancho Cordova and were pretty surprised at the remodel and the food at the restaurant. We use to go to this place back in the day when it was the Sheraton in the 80's. I had the waffle with berries and whip cream my lady had eggs bene. I will go back again. If you're statying at the Marriott this restaurant is a very convenient place to go. The staff is friendly and accomodating. The manager even stops by each table to check on their customers. I would have given them 5 stars, but I struggle with the very small menu selection that they offer. It's primarily pizza, a few pasta dishes and a handful of variations (steak, chops, salmon). The outside seating area is nice as it overlooks the pool area, which is pretty descent, however, the pool goers use the restaurant area of the patio as a walk way. So from time to time you will have the soaking wet person walk by as you are enjoying your meal. The food is good. The pork chops are tender and perfectly cooked. Pizza is not drowning in sauce. I would recommend if you're at the Marriott. read more

Went for a Valentine's Day Date Night. Worst experience ever. Food was cold, small, and unpalatable. Spent close to $200 for something that was a horrible experience. Customer service was bad too. They bring us out a bowl of soup and do not bring us a spoon for nearly 15 min. The waiter totally ignored us, we asked the host to get us a spoon. Then the waiter comes by and asks how is your delicious food? I laughed and said it was fine. The only thing that was actually good (because it was hot, like an entree is supposed to be!) was the free meatballs that the chef outside gave us. It was honestly the best thing we had. The drinks were gross too! The bartenders couldn't mix ice in water. They were terrible. I would never go here again. The only reason my wife and I had a good time, was because we were laughing on how bad the food was and we would have had a better meal at in and out! In one word......eeeewwwwww! read more

Server told me the beans are served crunchy on purpose...i guess there's a first for everything. As someone who travels for work and eats out often I have never seen "crunchy baked beans" on a menu. Valentine's Day was quickly approaching. I searched OpenTable and found decent reviews for Formaggio. The restaurant is located inside the Marriott hotel. I normally would only eat at a hotel restaurant if I was out of town, but I was in a pinch, so I made the reservation. We arrived a bit late for our 5:30 reservation, but were seated promptly. The interior entry space leading to the restaurant does not inspire confidence, however, the restaurant itself is nice and the food was presented in an appealing manner. The menu, because of the day, was limited to a few select items at a set price of $48.00. I ordered the lobster ravioli. This dish provided only eight ravioli, which were cooked, oddly, al dente, and three muscles and a few scallop pieces. My wife asked for her blackened rib eye steak to be medium rare. It came back cooked "well done." This was returned an another came back EXACTLY the same. The assistant manager said she would take it off our bill. I was finished with my entrée before my wife could start hers. When the bill came, it was marked off 20%. I expected 50%. When I inquired about this, the waiter said the manager had made the adjustment, not the assistant manager. He went back to the manager. The manager came to the table and simply said, "Here you go," as he placed the check on the table. We both thought he was rude. He offered no apology that his staff could not cook a steak properly. He took $28.00 off, the a la carte price for the steak. The overall experience made for a disappointing Valentine's dinner. read more

The menu has amazing picks! I wanted everything! However, we ordered at 12:00, and never saw our waitress again until we got our food. We didn't even get the appetizer in a decent amount of time, it was about 12:35, so I sought her out to cancel the item and remove it from the bill. We didn't receive our food until 12:50. And then another 10 minutes passed before the rest of the table was served. Our class started back up at 1:00 inside the hotel. Lastly, we reserved this table for 12:00. First off, put away any stigma you hold about dining in a hotel. Heard of the Ritz Carlton? Fifth Floor? Campton Place? In other words, hotel dining doesn't have to mean fajitas and Chuck E. Cheese-grade pizza, although admittedly it usually means little more than that, especially in sleepy ol' Sactown. Enter Formaggio. Apparently, the Marriott management decided to do a big retrofit on their dining room and put in a real, honest-to-goodness restaurant. The decor is simple and elegant, not at all jarring. The patio has ample seating with shade, and affords the diner fresh air, flowers, and a ringside view of flabby tourists at the pool. Concentrate on the landscaping and it'll be OK. The food is definitely Italianate, with many dishes featuring cheese (as in Formaggio), though never gratuitously. Our starter was a "citrus seafood salad," which included fried calamari on a creamy celery root puree, as well a impeccably fresh greens properly dressed with a refreshing citrus vinaigrette. Chopped rock shrimp and celery root married charmingly with it all. The whole thing came off very nicely. (Memo to local restaurants: more composed salads please!) Entrees included a thick pork chop; the waitress surprisingly asked how we wanted it cooked. She said the kitchen prefers medium, but some diners want it well-done. I told her that they should refuse to serve such people. Anyway, the chop came out on the well side of medium, but not too dry, and properly seasoned. Accompaniments were well executed. A wild striped bass special stole the show. Two fillets were pan roasted to perfection, with shatteringly crisp skin and a memorable flavor. The accompanying fregola sarda had a haunting, complex flavor from the veal jus, spices, and mushrooms with which it mingled on the plate. Desserts were good, not great. A lemon cake was overly sweet, and a "tiramisu" was a playful take on the classic, with espresso poured over ganache-filled chocolate cake. Overall, the quality of the food, obvious attention to detail by the kitchen, and promising young staff make this a restaurant to keep an eye on, and one I definitely would try again. read more

I came here for lunch at 12 noon on a Friday and the place was dead. Personally I think I was looking for a place that had more energy it was a Friday after all and I wanted to get the weekend started right. They had what looked like a full bar so I asked if they had a bartender on staff and the answer was no that the waiter or waitress's would attempt to make the drink based on experience working in the restaurant. For service only. So the other day a small group of us had lunch at Formaggios. We decided to split the bill ... sounds like no big deal right? The waiter (RAFAEL) came back, called out the names listed on the cards. We signed. We left. La-di-dah. The next day I see on my bank statement 2 different charges on my card; my share of the bill AND the entire bill amount. I called the restaurant and of-course they give the typical run-around, "Let me get your information and we will call you back." After 1 hour I get a call from not someone in management, but the waiter. Good 'ol Rafael explains to me he remembers serving us blah blah blah... and he will see what he can do. (What was the point of the waiter calling?! I have no clue) Another hour passes. Then two. No call. I decided to drive back to the restaurant to resolve this in person. I get to the restaurant and they tell me the waiters have left and Rafael is not there to speak with. The manager gets pulled out to speak to me. She explains that the waiter has "mistakenly" charged my card twice and that generally happens. (The EXCUSE ME!? expression is on my face) The true amount will be charged and the other reversed... First off: We were splitting the bill over TWO cards. Not a hundred. It ain't rocket science. Secondly: It's 's nice how management shrugs it off as a simple "Oops" moment. This is not an "Oops" moment. Your waiter (RAFAEL) made an error BUT did not bother to tell me this information. Hoping what? I wouldn't notice? So what if it reverses!? As of RIGHT now the funds are frozen out there and can't be used. Oh and HOW nice that management does not even offer anything. No sorry. No compensation for their staff member's stupidity. NOTHING. While staying at the Marriot, we enjoyed dinner on the patio. I had the Ahi Tuna- it was seared perfectly and melt in your mouth. It was served over a creamy polenta with some braised fennel and perfectly steamed asparagus. My friend is kinda a picky eater and the kitchen whipped her up a delicious meal to her liking (not on the menu). That is the kind of service I appreciate! Prior to checking out, we came back for half price happy hour appetizers. Liked the Calamari and buffalo wings. Not all of the appetizers were half price - just the more 'common' ones. Despite the somewhat random location (the Marriott at Hwy 50 and Sunrise Blvd in Rancho Cordova), we were pleasantly surprised by the superb quality of food coming from the restaurant. The restaurants decor could rival any upscale downtown establishment, making one feel as though you are not in a Sacramento Marriott restaurant eating dinner w/loved one on a Friday date night but rather elsewhere. The service was warm and enthusiastic. We were greeted promptly and with our reservation secured, showed to a table immediately. Granted, we were one of maybe 1/2 dozen parties in the spacious dining room but the room quickly filled up. Cozy booths line the walls and a large, private area in the back that can be curtained off to provide privacy for a large group or just a romantic tete a tete is also available. Our server was a bit green but very enthusiastic and we warmed quickly to her. The menu is a one pager consisting of appetizers, salads/soup, pasta and heartier, meat and seafood based entrees. Given the restaurant's moniker, cheese figures prominently and is given star attention on the menu. Each dish that features it (which is almost everything) has the type of cheese bolded in red to distinguish that particular ingredient. The bread that is brought to the table is homemade fragrant rosemary focaccia and the server gives the option of pouring some olive oil and balsamic on the table for dipping. Warning: this focaccia is addictive and my husband and I took down no fewer than 2 baskets on our own (granted, I am 18 weeks pregnant so that was my excuse). My husband ordered a Caesar salad and I the mixed greens with ricotta salata and thinly sliced radishes tossed in a tangy vinaigrette. My salad wasn't overdressed and the sharp radish was a nice contrast to the vinaigrette. My husband's Caesar was a bit unusual in that not only did it come with two large un-cut romaine leaves but also two large radicchio leaves. The dressing had the requisite anchovies and ample amounts of Parmesan but my husband isn't as big of a fan of bitter greens as I am and could have used more romaine and less of the 'red stuff'. In between the salads and our entrees, our server brought out an amuse bouche of a perfectly fried boccoccini (or would that be boccoccino) sitting atop of a roasted tomato sauce. Our entrees were a papardelle with rabbit, mushrooms and goat cheese and the beef brisket atop polenta in a beef brodo. Both were fantastic and very earthy; a perfect meal for the now cooler late summer/early fall nights. Due to the two baskets of bread consumed before dinner, we did not order desert but the wine list had a varied list of Italian and California producers that were reasonably priced the glass and bottle. . The only complaint was the bar with the two televisions turned into the Giants game is too close to the dining area for my taste. But given that it's the hotel's only bar, is forgiven. Luckily, this place is not too far off the beaten track and given it's location, is actually closer and more convenient that driving downtown. We will definitely be back. read more

So far I've been impressed with this small classy restaurant in Rancho Cordova. It's unfortunate that it had to be in a hotel, and may not get a lot of traffic. I've had the chicken Benedict for breakfast a couple times, the grilled salmon for lunch and have yet to experience their happy hour at their full service bar and lounge with pals on their poolside patio. I've witnessed their brunch buffet during the weekends, but enjoyed the Benedict the first time that I had to get it again during my second visit. We were staying at the Marriott for a wedding and were famished! I told my husband just to grab any pizza from downstairs and bring it up. This was not just any pizza. My mouth is drooling as I write this review. Margherita pizza. You can't go wrong. Amazing. The crust is the perfect crisp on the outside, and soft on the inside. Terrible. I was stuck here at a 2 day business event and I cannot find anything positive to say. Bland sauce, over cooked pasta and way too much oil. Lasagna literally swimming in oil. I know suburban hotel restaurants tend to be average and overpriced but it didn't even seem like they were pretending to try. I dropped $55 on lunch for two on the first day and we were treated to a maintenance guy cranking up the power washer to clean the spa mid lunch about 40 feet from 15 diners without a care in the world. The restaurant manager and waitress acted like it was normal as well. I recommend avoiding this place at all costs. read more

The waiter suggested a pepperoni and I am thinking like the plain ones my little kids would get. The waiter said I would not be disappointed. My rule is to follow the chef and waiter recommendations. My husband and I were staying in a hotel near Marriott. We didn't like Sheepherders when we went and Rudy's Hideaway was closed for the holiday, so we decided to try Formaggio. What a hidden gem. The hot focaccia bread was delicious. We ordered steamed clams and gorgonzola stuffed meatballs (bacon wrapped) as the appetizers. The clams were yummy but the meatballs were out of this world delicious. They should serve these as an entree with a side of pasta. The house marinara under the meatballs - YUM. My husband ordered a pepperoni pizza and could not say enough good things about it. It had the thin crust he likes, the house marinara on the pizza was delicious, the pepperoni wasn't salty and rubbery and whatever cheeses were on it, were delicious. My chicken piccata was also excellent. The veggies served with the meal were al dente and yummy. The chicken was still juicy and although way too much, the pasta served with the chicken was delicious. Service (Chris) was excellent and attentive. All in all a great meal and a fun way to end our four days in Rancho Cordova. read more

Stopped by here Friday after work with a few friends for drinks and dinner. I love the outside patio area they have, nice comfy chairs with an awesome view of the pool. The staff and service was fabulous; our waitress was extremely courteous. I had a couple of Raspberry Mojitos that were delicious. We ordered the calamari and french fry trio to start with, the calamari was a little on the chewy side but tasty. For dinner I had the Gorgonzola Filet with garlic mashed potatoes, the filet was a little on the tough side but the waitress gave us dessert on the house to make up for the meal. If you like desserts you will enjoy their dessert selection. A nice place to go and relax after a week at work on a nice cool summer evening. read more

I was at a three day seminar at the hotel & decided to have dinner here on the first day.The menu looked appealing & the prices were fairly reasonable. I ate with a group of 3 other people from the seminar & they had no problem splitting our bill. We had wanted to sit outside but they said we couldn't because it was reserved for a party at seven. It was only five so I really wished they had let us sit out there anyway, it wasn't going to take us 2 hours to eat, but whatever. They sat us at a table inside & we browsed the menu while we munched on some of the fresh bread with olive oil & balsamic. I decided to try the vegetable risotto. I haven't ever had a risotto before so I'm not sure if this one was up to par or not but it was a good portion size, contained lots of veggies, & it was tasty. My dining companions enjoyed their meals as well. Was invited here for work social. They served the Italian repast just as they do in Italy and it was awesome. Wine was good as well and my friend had the stuffed meatballs. They were quite good and were wrapped in bacon goodness. How could you go wrong! The locale was wonderful as the sun shined that day and the table setup was quite elegant. Great food and prices for a hotel restaurant. We enjoyed the fried calamari and rock shrimp which we loved. The pizzas were great (my favorite was the prosciutto) but for the sausage pizza, I didn't expect sliced sausage. It was kind of weird that it was just cut up and chunky all over the pizza. The service was a completely different story. It took over an hour for our pizza to come out and we were LITERALLY the only people in the restaurant. (...the chef had to cut fresh prosciutto... nice try....) They were conducting a job interview in the booth next to us which I thought was kind of trashy. Poor kid had me staring at him as he sold himself to the manager. They did offer us a free glass of wine for waiting which was a nice gesture. Came for a nice, quiet, Saturday evening dinner and was welcomed into a dim, but warmly lit restaurant. Highlights of the meal included the mussel steamers and lava pocket. What can I say? I'm crazy about shellfish, I always order it if it's available. Friend had the chocolate lava pocket, which our awesome waitress warned would take 15 minutes to prepare. It's ok. That's the best I can say. We had a table of four and the pizzas and pasta we ordered were executed nicely but tasteless. I think it comes down to quality of ingredients and seasoning. The staff were distracted and had no idea about the specials, wine or the daily cocktails they had listed. Super average and no way I'd eat here again. read more
