This is a great restaurant to dine in when visiting near or staying at the Mariott, Rancho Cordova. I have eaten here many times in the past year and I have not yet once been disappointed with the food or service. One time, I showed up late and was limited to a fairly small menu selection, but that was definitely not their fault. The food has been spectacular. Sure, just a tad pricey, but you would expect that for a restaurant or any other venue located in a hotel. I'm sure it is a surcharge based on convenience. If you are a fan of pizza, theirs is delicious, and wood-fired in their pizza oven. If you like fried calamari, it is perfectly battered and fried, definitely not overcooked and tender. Way above average for a hotel restaurant and bar. Have been going to the Marriott Rancho Cordova the last few years for an annual business function and have always been happy with Formaggio. Staff are welcoming and professional. Food is good -- love the reasonably priced appetizers. Friendly bar with a good selection of drinks. Excellent hotel restaurant. The bread was tasty and almost filled me up. Very good calamari. Lasagna was amazing (warning: it's heavy). Service was friendly. My only complaint is with the entrance. Went in at 8 a.m. for breakfest before a business meeting today. A couple that was there after me was greeted and had their order taken. I stopped a hostess and asked if my order could be taken about 15 after. She said she would let wait staff know. At 840 I had to get up and leave, meeting at 9 a.m. All I got was a "im sorry" by the hostess that I originally talked to, as I walked out. Worst service I have encountered in a long time. The chicken was dry and tasteless, and the sweet potato fries tasted great at first but then I tasted something acrid and off, like... cologne? Cleaning fluid? It was bad enough I had to spit out my fries at the table (yuk, sorry). I recommend not going until after 5:30 PM, other meals were great. read more

We showed up to the hotel late (10pm) and by the time we got situated it was just too late to try anything else. They still were open with a late night bar menu which worked perfectly. Excellent pizza (prosciutto, mushroom) and their candied miso BBQ wings were awesome. Also had great friendly service. Prices were reasonable too. read more

This review is for the buffet they have. This place is inside the Marriott hotel. I can honestly say this is the worst buffet I've ever been to in all my life, and I've eaten at buffets all over the world (China, Thailand, Scotland, Taiwan, and Las Vegas to name a few). The potatoes were chapped flavorless squares. They looked like the game peices to scrabble. Not even a sprinkle of salt. Bottled juice... nothing fresh squeezed. Bacon and sausage in the same oily container. Stale muffins. Fake maple "flavored" syrup. Yuck. The only thing working was the omelette bar, which took forever. When my omelette finally came, there was about 12 tablespoons of goat cheese in it. Just crazy! There were very few people there, about 14 including myself. The staff were nice, but they kinda just milled around aimlessly with no rhyme or reason. No one was at the front desk when I came, even though there's a sign that says please wait. I felt like I was in the twilight zone. It was a fantastic disaster. read more

Dinner was uneven - some of it, like the bread and the lemon cake dessert was 5 star, the seafood pasta a solid 4, the calzone a bit disappointing in the 2-3 range, but the 1 star goes to the steamed mussels which were drowning in rosemary. Rosemary is a very strong flavor and it completely overwhelmed the dish. We love mussels, and ordered this dish because we imagined soaking up all the lovely juice with the bread. That didn't happen. The service was really good, the ambiance nice, but it will take me a long time to forgive them for ruining such a classic dish. read more

Had a very nice meal during my stay at the hotel while on business last night - not the normal Italian menu some great appetizers and main course's great service and outstanding options on wines by the glass. Stopped into Formaggio to catch their Thursday lunch buffet deal. Only $10 for all-you-can-eat salad, soup, pasta, and pizza, plus a drink. The salad had a nice choice of mixed greens or romaine and iceberg, though the toppings were pretty limited and only 2 dressings to choose from: Caesar or a very tasty Italian/Balsamic. The soup was a DELICIOUS minestrone. Easily the highlight of the lunch, everyone went back for seconds (or thirds). The pasta was okay. There were two choices, both penne, with either a marinara or alfredo sauce. The marinara was rich, but the alfredo, while very creamy, was moderately bland and required a little extra seasoning for some people. The pasta was also a bit overcooked for my personal tastes, but definitely wasn't a deal-breaker. The pizzas, while simple, were very well made with obviously quality ingredients, with a choice of sausage, pepperoni, or veggie. The cheese was perfect, which made the pizza the only difficult item on the menu, as it stretched on and on and ON. Our server, Mia, had a perfect attitude, very friendly and helpful, and was on the spot to take away our dishes almost as soon as we were done with them, and she made sure our drinks stayed full. If you intend to go check out this deal, be sure to go early. We arrived at 11:40 with our party of 8 and the place was completely empty. My mother & I came here for dinner two nights ago, I wanted to treat her to a nice meal & a drink. Unfortunately we were never even greeted. The restaurant had maybe 4 tables tops. Sat there for 15-20 mins without even a simple "hello". A manager, & at least 3-4 servers walked by us without even checking on us. I only come here for business but won't be returning. read more

First off my wife and I eat out often at nice restaurants. I had read some good reviews so thought it would be a good close place to eat. When you walk in it presents very well. Nice bar and very comfortable seating. The lighting and decoration were done well. The service was also very good and there was a jazz trio playing. Unfortunately that's where it ended. The food was nothing like the inside of the place suggested. Just typical cheap hotel food. Frozen entree's from your freezer would have been better than what we were served especially at the prices they charge. We were very disapointed with the food. I am not a picky eater and we did not complain (wouldn't make the food taste any better). Funny thing is we enjoyed the appetizer and wine. Definitely won't be back. read more

Went to Formaggio with friends, recommended by their foodie son. Waitress was friendly and responsive. My husband and I had the watermelon salad which was pretty and tasty but only had two pieces of heirloom tomato. I had the risotto made with farro and vegetables. Good textures, vegetables not over cooked. Ample serving. My husband had scampi which was served over angel hair pasta with fresh tomatoes and cheese. The sea salt caramel ice cream was divine. We recently stayed at the Rancho Cordova Marriott and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the cuisine at this hotel restaurant. Normally, a restaurant in a hotel is the last place you want to eat, but this is as fine as it is going to get. I had the Osso bucco and my wife had the scallops. Absolutely excellent! The place was empty (a sign of a downtrodden economy) but the food and service was lovely. I had the soup du jour (shrimp and crab bisque) and my husband had the seafood mix salad as our 1st courses. As the appetizer we shared the calamari and for our main course we shared the lasagna. The only concern I had was that the lasagna said it was made with spinach pasta but we didn't realize this until after we left that it did not appear to be made with the spinach pasta - it was not green... the sauce was fantastic! Regardless - we'd go back - our server was very attentive (he asked if the pace of the dish delivery was to our liking). The only good thing about this restaurant is that it's convenient if you're staying in the Marriott. Customer service was subpar and the prices and the food were not impressive. I called in dinner and went to pick up my order. I waited in the front to be seated like the sign indicated, but it took quite some time for anyone to come check on me. When the lady noticed me, she didn't greet me or ask if I needed anything. I had to tell her I was there to pick up an order and she curtly directed me to go to the bar to pick it up. I went to the bar and wasn't acknowledged there until quite some time. The bartender eventually asked what I would like and went to the back to get my chicken parmigiana I ordered and handed it to me and walked away. I had to ask to pay for my order. I planned to order a drink, but didn't want to waste anymore time. The chicken parm was very big, but the flavor was somewhat odd and seemed a little undercooked. My order set me back $27 plus tax and tip. I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

My boyfriend and I were on our way home from a ski trip and decided to stop at the Marriot for the night. We found Formaggios in the hotel and decided to try it. I was very impressed by the excellent service and delicious food. Our waitress Kathy was very nice, funny, and genuine. She was constantly checking in with us on the status of our food. When we ran out of bread that came with the artichoke spinach dip she appeared at a perfect time and brought us bread without us having to ask for more. I ordered the New York Steak medium and it came out perfect that tasted so juicy and flavorful. The veggies were also cooked perfectly. My boyfriend ordered the calzone which he said was delicious. I also ordered a lemon drop that tasted great, just enough to taste the alcohol and get a buzz. We were so full from the main course that we couldn't eat desert though we wanted to. So we came back an hour later and ordered the chocolate cake purse to go. The desert was so rich and sweet, and by far the best chocolate desert. Next time when we are in the area we are definitely coming back to Formaggio Taverna for dinner. read more

My hubby and I were visiting the Marriott for a conference this weekend and went into the restaurant for a late lunch. We shared the club sandwich and wedge fries. We both enjoyed the sandwich. It was on thin bread, that I found to be perfect for the layered sandwich. The wedge fries were seasoned well, hot and crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside. This restaurant is located in the Marriott hotel, of Rancho Cordova. I have only eaten here for lunch, and the food is wonderful. Otherwise, I go here for the bar to drink :) The staff here is very friendly and professional. Even though I have received wonderful service from many servers/bartenders here, Nicki and Stacey are wonderful bartenders who I have received outstanding service from. I've had a breakfast and lunch here a couple of times. The food and service have always been very good. Nice place, beautiful outdoor seating, nice glassware, friendly staff. My parents were staying at the hotel so they invited us to join them for dinner there on a Saturday night. I was excited because I thought I had heard good things about this restaurant even though I was skeptical with it being a "hotel" restaurant. The atmosphere and deco was great. The hotel is beautiful. The small bar looked fun and was full. The patio & pool areas are nice with a huge TV screen and cool waterfalls. However, the food was terrible and the service was slow. I am definitely not a picky eater and I couldn't believe how bad it was. We ordered the warm spinach salad family style per my suggestion because I love the one at Buca Di Beppo. It was overwarmed, the dressing was odd & tasteless and it had these weird tasting (what I think were) mushrooms in it. The cobb salad we ordered family style had odd tasting salami in it....like it was rancid. I got the Farfalle Primavera pasta. It had a strange flavor and the weird tasting mushrooms. The chicken in it look and tasted odd. My husband got the seafood pasta and he said it was tasteless. My son got the lasagna and said it was like no lasagna he'd had before and wasn't sure there was meat or tomato sauce in it. We ordered the cheese plate appetizer and that, along with the bread and olive oil with garlic was probably the best thing about the night. My parents seemed to enjoy their meals - lamb chops & pork. We didn't tell them how bad ours were since they were treating. Our server was very nice but after we finished the cheese plate appetizer we didn't see anyone for probably 20 minutes. We think she was the only server in the place, which was pretty full. It also took way too long to get the check at the end. Our dinner took two hours total - from 7-9pm. Way too long. I have to say the prices were reasonable though and the portions were good. read more
