Formosa Aroma is pretty great; their tea selection is top notch and you obviously pay for it. They lived up to my expectations. This review is mostly for their fruit tea series. The tea has bits and pieces of real fruit. I think for tea shops to charge the premium that they do, they have to have real fruit these days, which is great. To be honest, there's not much difference between Formosa Aroma and an overhyped place like Chicha San Chen. So you might as well come here for tea instead. The real beauty is that there wasn't much of a wait when we went and there's ample seating. We noticed a lot of people on first dates, which is a positive sign for the tea shop. Parking can be an issue, but there's street parking, and garage parking in the back. Overall, would certainly return and can recommend to others. read more

It's one of my favorite boba tea shops! I have tried several of their teas, and it is really good. If you make your own milk tea, make sure you pick the right milk. My go-to drink here is the Oriental Beauty Oolong tea with rose foam 50% sugar. I usually ask to get the rose petal out since they add that at the top. I have also tried the lavander foam but it was too floral and taste kinda soapy to me. It take about 5-10 minites for the order when its not a rush hour time, since they brew their tea fresh for each order. Great place to hang out since there are several tables inside. read more

I've been to Formosa Aroma several times, and I do have to say that with each visit, I've grown to like their drinks more and more. They're located in the plaza on Main Street between 5th and 6th Street. There's a covered parking garage behind the plaza, so parking usually is not an issue. The past few times I've visited, the line was out the door. If you're lucky, you might come during an off-time where there's no line. What's unique about their menu is that they offer a wide variety of quality tea using the new tea method of a teaspresso machine. If it's your first time ordering tea here, it might be a little overwhelming. First pick a tea, then choose whether or not you want to add a type of dairy (oat milk, almond milk, soy milk, etc). Lastly, choose from their list of toppings and you're good to go. They have signs next to their teas that will give a short description of the tea. I've tried the jasmine green tea with whole milk, boba, and almond jelly ($5.75 + $0.50 + $1.50 for the toppings). With all the additions, the price does add up. I adjusted for less sugar and less ice - I think overall this drink was not too bad. I had it twice and I liked it more when I went back after the store had been open for several months. The tea was a bit on the blander side (which I've noticed more often with the teaspresso machine) and tasted a bit watered down. But I liked the chewiness of the boba (the size is btwn a mini and regular) and the fact that they have almond jelly! I've also tried their jinxuan mountain tea with sea salt cheese foam ($5.75 plus $0.75). I enjoyed this one much more - I could taste the quality of the tea mixed with the sweet and savoriness of the foam. I see a lot of people ordering the Formosa Ocean, which is popular for the pretty colors, but I haven't yet tried it. Definitely like that you can customize the drinks to your taste. There's a good number of chairs/tables inside if you want to sit and chat, but it can get pretty noisy. tl;dr - A nice new addition to the plethora of boba shops in the area. Located on Main Street, Formosa Aroma is a unique, minimalist aesthetic boba place that imports all their teas from Taiwan. Apparently each tea comes from a different city in Taiwan? Pretty neat. They also make their own boba in house too. Lots of unique menu offerings that are different from standard boba places with unique toppings and lots of customization as well. Many of the customizations I haven't seen at other boba places like: evaporated milk! Decent amount of seating inside too and you can read about the tea leaves that they have, the aroma, roasted level, fermentation level, and where they came from in Taiwan. Right now they also have their winter seasonal drinks, including a creme brulee grapefruit one (I have never seen this before). What if we were both girls and got bird themed milk tea??? A very real reality. We got the: 1) Golden Phoenix Oolong Milk Tea: -I believe my friend got this with less ice and regular sweetness. -The default milk option for this tea is creamer. -The tea leaf profile is roasted grain and charcoal and apparently comes from Lugu, Taiwan. -It scores a level 4 for how roasted it is and a level 3 for fermentation. -You can 100% tasted how roasted this drink is and the smoky charcoal flavor in the tea without it tasting burnt or ashy (if that makes sense). -Great balance of the tea taste and sweetness of the milk. 2) Dancing Crane Black Milk Tea: -I got this with less ice and less sweet. -The default milk option for this tea is evaporated milk. -Although this is a black tea, I'm not sure which black tea leaf it is since they have more than one here, but I'll make sure to check next time lol. -Nice strong taste that's not too sweet and you can taste the tea flavor very nicely. -Reminds me of a less sweet (which is good), HK milk tea. -Very yummy. While waiting for our drinks, we got to watch them knead and make the boba in house too. Neat! Had to stop off a package with UPS and this place caught BF's eyes! There was a small line headed out the door but I love boba so we joined the queue! From the door to ordering took about 10mins. Another 10mins to get your drink. You can kind of reduce the wait by calling in your order, but you'll still have to queue up to pay for your order. There is only one cashier and he handles phone orders too. If he's with a guest, phone order will need to wait but he's pretty efficient with managing both so it moves quickly! I think he might be one of the managers cuz he was VERY knowledgeable about the drinks and different customization options. He'll also inform each person what dairy type is defaulted in your drink etc. Very well run! I got the house Formosa Black Sugar Milk (Tea). It's standard milk only but I wanted the tea version and so glad I did! At 30% sweetness, it was perfect!! Sweet but not overly sweet. I think it's better to stick to regular ice because their drinks were on the warm side and despite it being cooler outside, the ice melted very quickly. They didn't necessarily mix the milk (+condensed milk) in the cup, so the first sip was all over sweetened condensed milk; make sure to mix it in the cup before drinking. I chose the Pink Guava Yakult Green Tea with 50% ice and sweetness levels. The friendly staff member told me that their fruit teas are sweeter, so getting 50% sweetness was a good call. This drink was creamy, but not too thick, and had a nice balance of sweet and tart. The guava flavor was kind of light, but the green tea and Yakult came through for me. This drink is good on a hot day! Also, I tried the Formosa Ocean from one of my family members, and I thought it had a pretty color and it tasted like a milky, sweet Ramune - not bad, but kind of interesting... Assam or whatever seasonal tea is usually what I get/try here. I usually get it with creamer (traditional) and quarter sugar for that just sweet enough taste. The black sweet rice yogurt smoothie is a favorite of ours for non-caffeinated. The line can get long at certain point in the day. This was my first time visiting, and I noticed it had a grand opening a few months ago. The place seems promising and had a decent crowd when I went. I ordered the Formosa Black Sesame Typhoon with Almond Pudding, and wow--it was delicious! While not a tea, it felt more like a dessert in a cup with a straw. I was curious about this place after seeing that Formosa Aroma offers rose cream foam and lavender cream foam using actual petals. When I went I ended up becoming more intrigued by the create your own milk tea line. They have a variety of teas from Taiwan, with diagrams describing where in Taiwan the tea originated from, as well as the aroma, roast and fermentation level to give you an idea of how the tea will taste. If you're not savvy about tea, these guides are very informative in helping you to decide which tea to get. They also have seasonal tea leaves. I got a seasonal tea called the Luye Red Oolong which I got because of its rosy aroma and thought that would pair well with the rose cream foam. The rose cream foam was very creamy and you can really taste the floral notes. Would definitely get this again and also want to try their lavender cream foam for another time. Happy to add Formosa Aroma to my milk tea rotation. I got the boba too just to see how they do it. They were very generous in their serving as they give more boba than most other places would. The boba has qq texture, but sadly, it had no flavor. So, not the best boba in town but that seems to be a common theme at places that focus more on tea quality over anything else, kind of like Chicha San Chen. Infact, Formosa Aroma has a similar concept to Chicha San Chen where you get to pick your tea flavors, type of milk and toppings in that order, though the former has a lot more variety of tea flavors and toppings, and their cups are bigger. None of that powdered stuff, just freshly brewed and authentic tasting tea with various levels of customization available. I ordered an Iron Buddha Oolong Milk Tea with non dairy creamer and Dalgona coffee mousse. Let me tell you, this combo was magic! The oolong tea was perfectly mellow and the tea flavor was strong. The dalgona coffee mousse added the perfect combination of texture, sweetness, and creaminess to the tea. After my first sip, I had an "aha!" moment. I will definitely be back to try more of their other teas and to discover other epic combos. The store is located by Lunasia in that same plaza. Wanted to give it another chance so went on a Wednesday afternoon, and it was surprisingly busy but didn't seem too bad. We only waited about 5 minutes to order, but after ordering it took OVER 45 MINUTES to receive our drinks. For nearly an hour wait, we expected our drinks to be outstanding. I ordered a mango mojito green tea, less sweet but the drink was extremely sweet and had an artificial menthol taste that made it unbearable and burned your mouth when you drank it. After seeing this place on Instagram, I'd added it to my bucket list to give a try while I was back in the SGV. It looked amazing and seemed to have high praise so I was super hyped to stop by. My friends and I made a bit of a trek to be here. First thing we noticed was that it is near/in downtown Alhambra and had a huge crowd outside on a Friday at around 9pm. We waited in line for probably around 10 minutes and waited for our drinks for another 15-20. Service was meh, they seemed a little stressed and very busy. They're definitely very Instagram-worthy visually, but we were quite disappointed once we tried the drinks. Pouchong Green Milk Tea: I'm normally a jasmine tea drinker but because this seemed popular, I wanted to try something new. It didn't stand out to me--it hardly had any flavor. I didn't even finish half of it. Jasmine Milk Tea: I personally preferred the flavor for the pouchong tea, but it was still very light in flavor and didn't stand out to me compared to other places. Golden Phoenix Milk Tea: It tasted very roasted which I didn't expect. I'm not sure if this is normal but it's not what I'm used to compared to other phoenix milk teas I've tried. The boba pearls were also very hard, I'm not sure if it's because we came late, but I feel like they should be remaking the batches before they harden like this. They weren't enjoyable to chew and got stuck in and clogged up my straw. They also didn't have much flavor or sweetness to them, which made them even less enjoyable for me. Formosa is still one of my favorite boba places around the 626 area! Albeit kinda pricey, but all boba places are these days (big sad). I've been coming here since their grand opening and although I'm disappointed that they got rid of their Ube latte, their other drinks do not disappoint. Everything you get here will be amazing, but my go-tos have always been the mango pomelo and creme brulee. Mango: so refreshing and not too sweet (get 50%), it's the perfect "boba" drink without feeling too heavy. Creme: if you're looking for a small twist to your classic milk teas, this is it. I came here because I wanted the blue gradient drink. I honestly did not expect it to be any good since it's blue and pretty, but it actually turned out to be decent! It was like lemony and sparkly.. refreshing. Even so, I wouldn't really get it again. Makes for a good picture though haha it's cute. It also stay cute once you mix it. read more

Formosa Aroma has the bougie Chinese aesthetic I live for (think of Florasis Cosmetics- love!) They have an extensive menu boasting different types of teas and toppings. I went on Christmas (and called ahead to confirm that they were open) where there was about ~10 minutes wait in line to order and ~20 minutes wait to get our drinks. They have a few tables inside and a single unisex bathroom in the back, but no outdoor seating. I ordered the Golden Phoenix Oolong Tea with Nondairy Creamer and Lavender Cream Foam; Floral infused creams are a game changer! When I'm at a coffee shop, I usually gravitate towards the floral lattes, and this is the perfect boba equivalent. Formosa Aroma is known for their high quality teas but if you're not into teas, they also have other fruity options. I really wanted to try their milk teas but I was pretty full from dinner so I decided to go for their Pink Guava Yakult Green Tea. My friend went with their Formosa Ocean and my husband went with a Jasmine Milk Tea with boba. My husband originally wanted the Biluochun Green Tea as his milk tea base but the cashier told him it would be too light for milk tea so they would not recommend it. Not really sure why it's on the list of options for their Signature Milk Tea then. My Pink Guava Yakult Green Tea was really good. It was light and tangy. I could taste the tea but it wasn't that strong. I got this at 100% sweet and didn't think it was too sweet. But I think it would still be better at 50%-75% sweetness. My friend's Formosa Ocean was good. It was lightly carbonated and had a hint of coconut and citrus to it. My husband's milk tea was insanely sweet but towards the end of it, it was really bitter due to the tea. Be sure to shake/stir your drinks thoroughly before drinking! The second that you walk into the store, you can smell the tea being brewed and it smelled delicious! It was a little crowded since it was a Saturday afternoon but it didn't take long for me and my friends to get our drinks. We did want to sit there but since it was packed and the tables were only for 2 people each we didn't end up staying. This tea was so good! I got the pouchong tea with whole milk and rose cream foam. It was the perfect amount of sweetness for me (I got normal sweetness). My friend got 70 for sweetness and she said that it could be a little sweeter, so probably get normal sweetness. I would definitely come back to try out more teas, everything on the menu looked really good! read more
