On Tuesday, June 17th, my sister-in-law picked up some drinks and we got to try Hechalou. I got the the large matcha latte with black sesame jelly and whole milk, but unfortunately, I wasn't too impressed. The matcha itself didn't taste like the highest quality -- it leaned more bitter than smooth, and pairing it with the black sesame jelly seemed to emphasize that bitterness even more. The texture was also a little on the grainy side. At around $8.80, it felt a bit pricy for what I got, especially given the taste and texture. I'm not sure how long she waited to pick up the drinks, but I would not spend my time waiting. Sadly, this was a pass for me.
What I Ordered: -50 Taiwanese Milk Tea $5.75 Less Ice 70% Sweetness I've heard great things about Hechalou and had to try it! It's the real deal! Located inside 99 Ranch, just look left when you enter. You can order at the tablet or with a barista. I tried the recommended 50 Taiwanese Milk Tea, and it was splendid. I ordered it with less ice and 70% sweetness, and it was perfectly balanced. The tea has a nice, distinct tea flavor, which is what I appreciate in a milk tea. The milk tea is priced well, under $6 before tax, and offers good value. I will definitely return.
This is a 2.5 star for me I was pretty excited to try this place, after the hype, but just to find out their tea was just okay, thought their jellies are worth to try. The tea spot is located inside of the 99 Ranch. The service was also just okay as you can either order from the kiosk or with someone who is present. Probably not the best to have a Kiosk around as some elders weren't sure how to function, which may cause extra waiting time. Ordered : - Earl Grey Latte with Black Tea Jelly : jelly was good, but the latte was just okay. Tea taste was at least 2.8/5 for me - Signature Blend Black Tea with Sesame Jelly : The sesame Jelly flavor was there, however, it was a bit hard to suck from the boba straw. Not sure if it was just because they're too chunky or a tad too stiff to suck from the straw? There are seats for those who want to hang out with friends, but just know that you will be surrounded by people who are either in line waiting to order or waiting for their order. Will I come back just for their drinks? Probably only if I am grocery shopping specifically at this 99 ranch.

I placed my order online so I didn't have to wait long Menu had a good variety teas, fruit teas, and milk teas and pricing was reasonable - $5-6+. It was nice that there is the option to adjust sweetness and ice. Toppings are $1.25 and there was a lot of different kinds of jelly to choose from. The Taiwanese Milk Tea ($5.75 + $1.25 topping) - got this 30% sweet with less ice and matcha jelly. This was nothing special and the tea was very bland. The matcha jelly was flavorless and very disappointing. This was 5/10 The Daydream Latte ($5.75 + $1.25 topping) - got this 30% sweet with less ice and black sesame jelly. This has not tea flavor at all and extremely bland. The black sesame tasted good and actually tasted like black sesame. This was 6/10 The Lychee Black Tea with Aloe ($7.25) - got this 30% sweet with less ice. This was ok, nothing special. The tea was quite flavorless so once again, I was disappointed. Definitely would not recommend and return, unfortunately.
Located at the front inside the 99 Ranch Market, a convenient stop if you also need to do some grocery shopping. This location has some seating available, but is more of a stop and go vs a sit down place. Decided to try Hechalou since I saw they brew loose leaf teas, make their jellies/puddings in house and use fruit juice (no syrup) in their fruit teas. When walking in, you can definitely smell the fragrance of brewing tea. I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor of their Geisha Peach Black Tea Latte (Ceylon BT w/peach infusion), I ordered mine with 100% sweet, normal ice, whole milk and boba jelly ($1.25 extra). Since there was no line when I came in, I got my drink in a few minutes. The drink was a balance of creamy and strong Ceylon tea with a white peach flavor that didn't taste artificial. I have grown to like boba jelly more than boba lately and am glad I chose it for this drink. In total my drink was around $7-8 after tax including topping for a medium. I would definitely come back to get this drink but in a large size! My friend tried the Lychee Signature Blend Black Tea with Aloe w/ Osmanthus Oolong Tea Jelly. She ordered it with less sugar (4) and 70% ice. The lychee flavor is very powerful and she would recommend getting half sweet (3) next time (if you want less sweet and more tea forward fruit teas). She really enjoyed the oolong jelly. Will be back again to try more teas!
Got them over the weekend and there was a line. I placed my order via toast tab (they have a link on Instagram page), so didn't have to deal with that. My 2 medium drinks came down to $15.75. Got the original Taiwanese milk tea with sesame jelly & lychee signature black tea with aloe. They're pretty mild in flavor and not overly sweet, which I appreciate. I wouldn't drive too far for these though. The black sesame jelly is unique and I liked it!

They have a kiosk to order from but also an employee to take your order directly at the register. There is limited seating inside. We tried their teas with tea jelly added for $1. The large size is $5.60. -Geisha peach oolong tea with osmanthus oolong tea jelly: the peach flavor didn't really stand out and nothing super special about the jelly (could barely taste it) (3/5) - Orchid green tea with osmanthus oolong tea jelly: unique green tea taste because of the orchid. The jelly was easy to chew and had some hint of tea but couldn't tell if it was from the tea or the jelly (4/5) -Osmanthus oolong tea with signature blend tea jelly: couldn't really tell the tea taste from the jelly (3/5)
I visited the one in Long Beach before and it tastes about the same! This one is located right inside 99 ranch where Half and half used to be. There wasn't a wait when I went, so it was pretty easy to order upfront. I didn't wait too long either as well. They have some casual seating areas right in front too. You'll get that Asian supermarket ambiance lol. Got the osmanthus oolong tea with tea jelly, and it was honestly pretty good! I do remember that they gave more tea jelly at the other branch, so I wish they had more in one drink. The tea was quite roasty and fragrant. You can tell it is quality tea here! Prices are at on the higher end for boba. I would get this again if I was craving jelly specifically, so I would try the others next time!
#109 in my Teaholic Diaries. It wasn't until I saw the posts from Yelp friend Leslie L. that I realized Hechalou opened a new location in SGV. So thank you Leslie for putting the opening on my radar! I've had the Lakewood location bookmarked for a while but I kept putting it off because I didn't want to deal with the long lines. So fast forward one year and I finally had a chance to decide for myself if Hechalou is worth the hype. Unfortunately, it was not, at least in my opinion. I'm sad to say that the teas were underwhelming and failed to live up to my expectations. I tried three different drinks and felt like all three missed the mark. The Daydream latte is described as a blend of uva and toffee black teas that give it a smoked caramel flavor and a fragrant longan finish. Sounds enticing right? Sadly the end result failed to impress. While I could somewhat taste the caramel flavor they mentioned, it was so subtle and the tea flavor was light. I felt like the tea should have come through stronger than the dairy at least. I also ordered the Jinxuan oolong tea with osthmanthus oolong jelly, and once again, the tea flavor was lighter than I had hoped for. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, it just didn't stand out to me. As for drink #3, I ordered the Lychee signature black tea blend with Aloe - it was pleasant enough. To summarize, the drinks weren't bad but they fell short of my expectations based on the craze surrounding the other location. Out of the three drinks I ordered, not a single one left a lasting impression. ****************** My Ratings: 1 Star: Terrible; just thinking about it makes me angry. 2 Stars: Wasn't a fan so Not likely to return. 3 Stars: Meh. Average. Might return if others drag me. 4 Stars: Yum! Likely to return. 5 Stars: Amazing! Would plan my day around it.
The manager here is soooo sooo nice and generous. I went when it wasn't busy and no one was in line. I was asking which jelly pairs with what drink. He gave me samples of the jelly and gave suggestions of the pair combo. Wow the fresh jelly is delicious! The tea flavor definitely comes out for the osmanthus. I'm also a fan of the almond, sesame, and black tea. In Chinese the term to describe it is fragrant "xiang" or "hern" in Canto 香。 香茶味! I loved it so much I bought 8 drinks to share with my family so they can try it too. First time and such a positive experience. Thank you! I will come back to support. You should go try it too
This spot is hidden right inside the 99 Ranch in Alhambra, on the left side of the entrance. I only knew of this spot from word of mouth so imagine my surprise when I saw it! The drinks are tea-focused. They have different types of flavors and milk versions. The taste is more fragrant and more prominent. I ordered the Taiwan Milk Tea (half sweet) with almond pudding. I feel like the more less sweet you go the more fragrant the tea taste is (obvi really haha) but in a way that doesn't taste bad. The service is good and friendly. They make the drinks within a few minutes of ordering. I would recommend coming here for a quick pick me up while grocery shopping.
Shop is situated inside the 99 Ranch where H&H used to be. This brand is known for tea based jelly toppings. Finally had the opportunity to try Hechalou just to see what the hype is about. There were people already waiting, but drinks are made quite fast. Service here is pretty good. I got the earl gray latte at the lowest sugar level with matcha jelly. Drinks are pricy as hell; the milk teas are above 6$ and jelly toppings start at 1$. I know the standard is 6$ for a drink now, but you're likely to spend over that if you upsize. My drink was pretty good. The tea and jelly are both mild in flavor, but it was not cloyingly sweet. It was worth trying, but not a place I'd go out my way for. Their jellies are definitely their selling point and I see the appeal.
My husband and I tried Hechalou in Alhambra on a friend's recommendation and were really disappointed. We ordered two of their best-sellers--the Daydream Black Tea Latte and Divine Awakening Tea Latte--and both were weak, watered down, and not fragrant at all. The drinks were also strangely too cold, even for iced. They make their jelly in-house, which we were excited about since jelly toppings are big in the 626, but theirs was plain and forgettable. The shop is inside 99 Ranch, and the seating area felt dingy, with dirty, grimy tables. Staff were friendly and polite, and that's the main reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1. The only upside was the friendly service, but overall, with so many better boba options in the area, we wouldn't come back. read more
I saw this place on Instagram and was curious to try it out. I didn't know that it was in this 99 Ranch that I went to on a whim and was glad to find out that it was right here. There's a self-order kiosk and since no one else was in line I was able to browse through it on my own time. I ordered the Osmanthus Oolong Tea ($5.05) with Osmanthus Oolong Tea Jelly ($1). I was the only one there so took maybe only about 2 minutes to come out. Both the tea and the jelly had a very strong tea flavor, which is what I prefer, which is why I usually reduce the amount of sweetness in all my drinks. It's definitely different with the jelly instead of the boba I usually get, but it's a nice change. Contact was very minimal since you order at the kiosk first and the only human interaction is when they bring out your order to you. I think for the size that you get it was pretty pricy, but it's definitely slightly different from your typical boba shop. If I happen to be at this same 99 Ranch again I'd stop by for a treat, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. read more
Great friendly service, clean interior but small since it's in the 99 Ranch grocery store. They have one of my favorite toppings, tea jelly. They have a wide variety of tea jellies that I haven't seen in other boba tea shops. I've been here 3 times so far and I can't wait to come again and try new things on their menu. Also, all the different choices can be a little intimating, but the staff is really wonderful about asking what you like and giving recommendations. read more

The Jasmine tea latte itself is light in taste but does have a floral essence. I really liked the sesame jelly a lot, maybe next time I'll pair it with the Taiwan milk tea instead. Service is good. It got my milk tea craving satisfied. read more

Located inside the 99 Ranch Market. Plenty of parking but long line placing orders. There was one person taking orders and one self-checkout kiosk, but people were slow in placing their orders. There is seating and tables available inside. I got the Daydream Latte with Signature Blend Tea Jelly. It was good, but like other drinks I had before, so it was definitely overhyped. Jason, one of the guy that works there. Super friendly and helpful. I accidentally ordered a small size and he made me a large size after. I insisted on paying but he offered me that for free. Appreciate the generosity and offer. I knew this place from Long Beach and i tried it a couple of times and love it! Their drinks have strong tea taste thats thats their signature. Super popular and crowded in LB. When i found out they are opening this Alhambra location, i was excited and looking forward to it. This place sits inside a Chinese supermarket called 99 ranch market. Once you walk in from the entrance, its located on your left hand side near the far left entrance. They have a few chairs and tables where you can sit and enjoy your drink. I ordered a classic "daydream" black milk tea with signature blend tea jelly and a orange orchid green tea with oolong tea jelly. Sugar tea i had both at level 3. Both have strong tea favor which thats something i love in a milk tea. Totally dont understand why some people say their drink has less or light tea flavor unless its just their drinks. The jelly for both drinks are not too sweet but you can taste it. It blended into the drinks so the tea and jelly taste wont over one another. Hechalou didn't disappoint me on my 3rd tried and they still rank one of the good boba spot in the SouthCal and SGV now that Alhambra has a location. I'm someone that goes everywhere for boba so I hope this can help you on deciding if you want to drink it or not. read more
I would give this place a 3.5. The signature milk tea did not wow me since I would have liked a stronger tea flavor. The jelly's were tasty, except for some texture issue with the black sesame jelly. The almond flavor was a big hit with my friends. You can't go wrong with their along jelly. The matcha had decent flavor while the black sesame had a weird clumpy texture. I believe when they make the jelly, the black sesame paste/powder fall to the bottom of the pan, making all the paste collect in one side. They need to cut off those parts of the jellies before putting it into the drinks (in my opinion). Overall, I'd come if I was in the area, but I wouldn't drive here just for their drinks. It's a good try though! read more

Long awaited boba spot that took over Half N Half Tea Express in the 99 Ranch Market. Got the Daydream Latte with Almond Jelly with S3 (prob 75% sweetness at other boba spots). The black tea base is light in terms of flavor and the almond jelly tastes nice and sweet. For the Signature Blend Latte, we got it with black sesame jelly. The tea is alright and black sesame jelly tastes a bit chalky. There's a lot more people in line so doing the kiosk QR order makes it easy to order while shopping in the market. Service is quick and friendly! Parking will get a bit crowded during the weekend but spacious. Interior is cute with some tables and chairs for sitting and chatting with friends. read more
Finally got to try this place out! They're located inside of the 99 Ranch market. Plenty of parking available. I like that they have online ordering so my order was ready before I arrived. Honestly, I feel like this place is a little too overhyped. I was expecting to be blown away by their jelly toppings but it just tasted pretty average to me. I ordered the Osmanthus Oolong Tea Latte with the signature black tea jelly. The milk tea itself was pretty basic, and honestly a little too milky for my liking. The tea flavor was pretty weak too. The jelly lacked flavor and I was expecting more texture to it but it just tasted like regular grass jelly that you can get from other boba shops. I need to come back again to try their fruit teas, but for now, I would say I wouldn't go out of my way just to get Hechalou. read more
Tried Hechalou inside of 99 Ranch on Main Street in Alhambra out of curiosity. We ordered a large Taiwanese Milk Tea with brown sugar boba (70% ice, Sweetness level 3), & a large Earl Grey Latte (70% ice, Sweetness level 3). Both drinks tasted pretty watery (which could be attributed to the lower sweetness levels). The brown sugar boba in the Taiwanese Milk Tea added some flavor, but didn't taste very fresh or warm. Haven't been here in a while. Decided to try a different drink. DRINK: Jinxuan Oolong Tea w/ Osmanthus Oolong Tea Jelly 4.25/5 S3 (half sugar), less ice. Medium $5.05 + tea jelly $1. Light and kinda nice. Half sweet isn't very sweet, just a hint. Added Oolong Tea Jelly, which helps with the overall flavor and gives you something to chew on. In all, not bad, just a bit pricey for a medium size ($6.69 after tax). I guess I should have gotten a large or do without the topping. read more
Let me tell you, this place is very mediocre. We tried the Divine Awakening (sadly didn't get a pic) and the Taiwanese milk tea. Both drinks were extremely bland... taste of actual tea was no where to be found. Located in the 99 Ranch Market, where Half n Half used to be. Plenty of places to sit and relax. It would've been a decent place to hangout if the drinks were actually good. Service was friendly (3 stars for that). Plenty of amazing tea spots in the 626, this place is not one of them. read more
This new tea shop is located inside 99 Ranch Market by the entrance. There's lots of available parking in the plaza. There's a good amount of seating in the front. There's an ordering screen at the front but a staff member can also help you too. I got the Daydream Black Tea Latte with Sesame Jelly. It was pretty good and the sesame jelly made it taste nutty and creamy. read more
I popped into He Cha Lou after seeing those gorgeous pics online. You know, the ones with the jelly cubes looking all glossy and luxurious on top of the drink? Yuhhh... let's just say reality didn't quite match the fantasy. That's on me and my high expectations, not them. I got catfished by tea, and honestly, it happens. I tried the Geisha Peach Black Tea with Osmanthus Oolong Jelly (sweetness 2, 70% ice) and a Taiwanese Milk Tea with Black Sesame Jelly (sweetness 3, 70% ice). First sip and I was like... where's the tea? I wanted a stronger flavor profile, and based on other reviews, I'm not alone. In a neighborhood with so many tea options, it's gotta bring more than just cute vibes. I need depth. I need complexity. I need drama. LOLLL The black sesame jelly was the real MVP though. I'm an absolute sucker for black sesame anything, so the fact that I could actually taste it? We love that!! I'd honestly consider ordering a whole cup of just that! Staff was sweet and helpful while I was asking them questions, which I appreciated. Just a heads up: they run out of stuff like boba and black tea jelly, so go earlier in the day unless you want to hear the dreaded "we're out." Bonus: plenty of parking since it's inside the 99 Ranch (in the old Half & Half space. RIP to that era). Will I come back? Maybe if they level up the tea game. For now, it's more of a cute detour than a regular go-to. TL;DR: Gorgeous branding, great parking, and black sesame jelly that slaps. Tea flavor needs a glow-up. I've seen Hechalou all over social media. I was excited that they opened one closer to me and was excited to finally try it. I went in on a Tuesday around 1pm and they didn't have boba at the time. There were quite a few people, but the line went by quickly as they had a kiosk and cashier. The cashier was nice as I asked why I couldn't add the sesame jelly into some of their teas. Drinks came out quick too. Divine Awakening Latte w/ Sesame Jelly (S2) - Nutty flavor - Not too sweet - Sesame jelly wasn't my favorite as it had a more gritty texture than I was expecting Grandma's Fruit Tea w/ Signature Tea Jelly (S2) - Cashier said this was a black tea with passion fruit and orange - I think I could've gotten this drink a little sweeter - I did like the passion fruit seeds in it - Jelly wasn't anything special like a basic tea jelly Overall, I was a bit disappointed in the drinks :/ Their jellies were too hyped up on social media. read more
Located inside 99 Ranch Alhambra on Main St. tons of parking in a shared plaza with Jollibee. Beware Boba is available after 12p. Staff is so sweet and kind, especially Johanna! She kept on checking on us even when having to work on other orders ahead of ours. We took a while to decide what we wanted, we opted to use the self serve kiosk. They have a traditional register with staff to take your order. Or a self serve kiosk, perfect for those who like to see the full menu and fully customize their order. Matcha Jelly -if you order this with a milk tea, matcha blends with it and not much matcha flavor. Texture is quite smooth and creamy. Osmanthus Oolong Tea Jelly -quite mild as well. More bouncy than the Matcha Jelly. Osmanthus Oolong Tea -opted for minimal sweetness (level 1). Tea flavor is there but would prefer it to be stronger. Osmanthus Oolong Tea Latte -creamy blended with fragrant osmanthus, not as strong as I'd prefer. Daydream Black Tea Latte - Not sure about smokey but subtle caramel flavors shines through. Strong tea flavor. Geisha Peach Black Tea Latte -subtle peach flavor not overpowering. Refreshing. Lychee Signature Blend Black Tea w/ Aloe -recommended sweetness was good (level 4). Not too sweet, refreshing on a hot day. Taiwanese Milk Tea -traditional tea flavor. Wasn't my favorite, had a strong bitterness that as a little burnt. read more
Located inside of 99 Ranch. There is plenty of parking on site. It shares among other businesses in the area. This location is small. There is some seating but mainly to go location. The place is known for their jelly. The jelly is unique topping, love the texture. The tea flavor is strong! The prices are steep! Around $7 a drink. read more
finally got to try Hechalou! located in 99 Ranch in Alhambra near Mainstreet -- plenty of parking in a shared lot with the plaza! the tea is insanely high quality and rich in tea flavor! super authentic and tasty. even the milky drinks are light and flavorful. not heavy at all. their latte drinks use whole milk versus powder or creamer. their milk teas use creamers. the sweetness is well balanced and the jelly is so silky. we ordered the jasmine green tea latte and daydream black tea latte, both with tea jelly. the total was around $15! a bit pricey. they have a self service ordering tablet or you can order with a cashier. when you enter 99 Ranch, turn your head left and youll easily see Hechalou. it's decore features rich green color and wood details with the name super large at the top. they have a seating area to chill and/or work. overall highlights - very rich tea drinks, yet light and refreshing! doesnt make you feel bloated like other milky drinks might make you feel. read more
Located in a grocery store is Hechalou with a wide array of flavors and jelly to choose from that will best compliment your tea of choice. They let you try samples as well. Teas are very fresh, and earthy for some, the sides to be added are good as well with a good selection to add. read more
This is located in the 99 ranch market in Alhambra. I really liked that the menu gave you recommendations on how they would recommend to get specific drinks like how sweet/ice level you should have them at. I ended up getting the Geisha Peach Black Tea with boba jelly which I really liked. It was clean tasting and I got it with a what they would call level 1 sweetness (I assume this is like 25%). Boba jelly was pretty interesting too and I would get again. Overall prices are reasonable and I liked the drink. read more
I got the matcha with tea jelly and matcha jelly and it tasted a bit like green bean but I think it's because I substituted the milk with soy milk. The jellies were so yummy and the tea flavors were really strong and authentic. The drinks came out pretty fast. It's connected to the grocery store so there's some seating but it's not too vibey. read more
Hot and new, Hechalou is opened their next location in Alhambra. During their soft opening, they don't have boba yet, but they have their tea jellies with flavors like Black Sesame, Black Tea, and Green Tea. Located in the 99 Ranch Market, their brand colors of emerald green and rustic gold make it easy to find. Their staff are so sweet, one of them gave me sample teas and brews (unsweetened) to get a feel of what each tea is like. I got their strongest and most caffeinated tea latte, Divine Awakening, it's a blend between their Earl Grey Tea and Black Tea. It was amazing and paired perfectly with their Black Sesame Jellies. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND AND I WILL BE BACK! read more
