I was SO EXCITED to visit this location with all the reviews and hype on Yelp! Sad to report, I was SO disappointed with the quality of food! I'm summing the hype of the reviews to be mainly due to the ambiance of the restaurant and not so much about the food. Or maybe, this location is the best Chinese food in the area...I'm just not sure. I have to admit the ambiance is nice and photo worthy but, I need the food to hit just as hard if the ratings are going to be upwards of 4 stars and it just didn't for me! WARNING: This is a very small restaurant! Reservations are HIGHLY recommended! They do offer indoor and sidewalk dining but, it is very limited in space. We ordered: Szechuan green beans - green bean were ok Honey walnut shrimp - this was the best thing on the table as it was not too overly dressed with sauce and shrimp was nice and crispy FS fried rice - different taste with the garlic butter but, in a good way Shrimp and pork dumplings - I didn't care for the sauce and dumplings themselves lacked in flavor Crab rangoon - NOT A FAN of the flavor! I think they use real crab meat and it was just more on the fishy smelling and tasting side. Char siu ribs - enough to feed 4 people but, they appeared well dressed in sauce but, still lacked in flavor Golden fried custard - NOT A FAN! Custard was weird, needed more of the lychee sauce for it to have ANY taste at all. If you are looking for authentic tasting Chinese food, in my opinion...this location is NOT IT. Everyone's palette is different though...SO DO YOU!
This is the best meal I have had in so long. I stopped in by myself and really soaked in the experience. The atmosphere was amazing- great lighting, beautiful interior, vibrant people. Staff were kind and helpful. The orange chicken was a 12/10. Loveeeed it! Crab rangoon... arguably the best to ever exist?!?! There's no way it gets better. The cocktail was also amazing! I asked to be surprised with a vodka cocktail and it was delightful. Perfect dinner!
Went here with my son and husband and my son's friends. I didn't make any reservations 'coz it was a weekday and I was thinking that it probably wouldn't be that busy, but omg I was wrong we waited like 1 hour for the table 'coz the inside was already packed when we came. But the wait was worth it. We enjoyed our dinner here. For the 4 of us I ordered a lot 'coz when I was reading the Menu they all look so good :;) Here is what I ordered for the 4 of us: *EGGROLLS *CUCUMBER SALAD *DUMPLINGS *CRISPY TOFU *MAMI NOODLES *FRIED RICE *GENERAL TSO'S CHICKEN *BEEF & BROCCOLI *SALT & PEPPER SHRIMP *HONEY WALNUT SHRIMP *CHAR SIU RIBS *DAN DAN NOODLES *GOLDEN FRIED CUSTARD *2 MOCHI The plates and serving size look small, but it's actually a good portion in person and very filling. There's so much food for me to discuss all of them, so I'm just gonna tell you guys which one I liked the most. The one that I will get for sure on my next visit is the CRISPY TOFU, SALT & PEPPER SHRIMP, DUMPLINGS, MAMI NOODLES, HONEY WALNUT SHRIMP , DAN DAN NOODLES and TSO 'S GENERAL CHICKEN. These are very Tasty and delicious. The one I'm probably not gonna get next time are the Cucumber salad, Eggroll, and the Char siu ribs. The cucumber salad taste meh, it didn't have that good, strong taste of condiments I was looking for. The eggroll wasn't that good. The Char siu ribs was good, but when night time came and the lights got dimmed I couldn't tell the difference between the meat, garlic, ginger, etc., 'coz the color of them all together are all the same and it's hard for me to pick which one is the meat ;) For the dessert the Golden fried custard and Mochi , not a fan of them . For drinks we just got water coz they dont serve Cocktail . But all in all I would come back here again 'coz the service is great and there's lots of food I still wanna try here. Parking is kinda always hard in this area.

One of the best spots. I am a sucker for any consortium holdings place but this is one of my favorites. Have been here so many times...but you know the rules...one quick review: Food: amazing. So good and huge portions and not too pricy Ambiance: it's a consortium holdings spot...so this part is amazing...for sure Service: great and on point for orders, can take a bit of time if busy but good.
Fun decor with indoor and outdoor dining. Parking is limited street parking. Reservations are recommended. Service was spotty. We had to ask for condiments multiple times before receiving them. The food: The egg rolls were not crispy, the cucumber salad was good. The beef lo mien was really good. The kung pao was ok. There was no heat to it and the chicken was dry. The szechuan green beans were very good. The menu pricing is very reasonable. We will go back.
I had my doubts. CH is known for being all vibes, no taste, but Fortunate Son may actually be one of their restaurants that is getting it right! The food here is really good! My husband and I couldn't narrow down our favorites so we ordered more than we needed! We got the crab rangoons, fried rice, orange chicken, honey walnut shrimp and green beans. Everything was delicious! You can never go wrong starting with crab rangoons. The fried rice was really tasty and well seasoned. The orange chicken had that real orange glaze (not overly sweet). Our stand outs were the honey walnut shrimp and the green beans. Both were crisp and cooked so fresh! We had plenty to go after because they did provide some nice sized portions! The restaurant itself is very vibey and over the top, as to be expected, but way smaller than I expected. Definitely make a reservation. They have a limited drink menu with a few non alcoholic options and 3 beers. Glad I finally got to try this place and that I was so pleasantly surprised by the food!
Come for the ambiance but nothing really else! My friend from out of town was craving Asian food so I made a Thursday reservation for this spot since I've been wanting to go also! We got there around 7 and it wasn't busy. I found street parking easily a couple blocks away. The restaurant is pretty small, I'd recommend at most a party of 4 here. Well decorated as all of their establishments are. You order family style. We ordered the cucumber salad, noodles, and honey walnut shrimp. Service was alright. The food was really really salty. But aside from that, good portions! Definitely enough for 3 people and then some. Bill came out to $55 which is a bit more than other Chinese food places you can visit in SD for lower quality. I'd visit again but nothing to write home about.
Very underwhelming compared to all of the hype on social media. The place is very small on the inside and the aesthetic was unique but not as impressive as I was expecting. Food was quite bland and one noted. I've always wanted to try this place and glad I did, but wouldn't go back or recommend.
some of the best food that you'll eat in the city. We got in super easy there no lines although when we left, there was a line halfway down the street just to get in. The ambience is beautiful like no other. My favorite dish was the scallion stirfry beef, we also got the general TSO Chicken, which I thought was just a ok and we got the cucumber salad, which was delicious. I'd highly recommend visiting.
I'm so thankful that our hotel concierge recommended Fortunate Son to me on a recent work trip because it was one of my favorite restaurants we tried. The food is incredible and the restaurant decor is just as good! I was stunned by the pink and green exterior, I loved everything about it. My mom and I split the cucumber salad, dumplings, and the scallion stir-fried beef. Everything was delicious but we were most blown away by the scallion stir-fried beef because the beef was so tender and it was surprisingly delicious for how simple it is. I'd recommend a reservation because it's a small space. I think you can also go next door to Polite Provision and get Fortunate Son takeout which is such a hack.
Decor is adorable. Service was good. Menu was small. Restaurant was hot as hell! Food was okay. The prices are right but not sure I'd be back. It was way too hot in there today.

I came with a friend late on a rainy night. I had heard about this place here and there since it's also run by the same group managing Morning Glory. Parking was easy since it wasn't very busy (due to weather and time of day). The inside was cute and pretty aesthetically pleasing (feels almost like cultural appropriation...). Food was average for the most part. It took a while to come out and I noticed that neighboring tables, who arrived after us, received their food first which was strange. I wasn't impressed by the fried rice or green beans. The tofu was the best one out of the 3 dishes we ordered. One redeeming factor is that the food was pretty cheap for the portion size. As for service, the waitress was nice but there was no service after we ordered. No one to refill water or check in. I felt like we were neglected. Overall, cute decor, average food, and bad service. read more

Tried to dine in a couple different times before getting a reservation with a reasonable wait time. The interior of the restaurant is so beautiful but there's not much seating, so the long wait time is understandable but not worth it in my opinion. We ordered the Shanghai bok choy, General Tso's chicken, and Dan dan noodles. The three dishes were a good amount of food for three people dining, and we still had leftovers to bring home. All three dishes were a bit on the greasy side. The General Tso's chicken was also heavily breaded, so it was crunchy but there wasn't much meat. The Dan dan noodles were pretty good and not too spicy. If you like spice, you could probably ask for chili oil/sauce! I really enjoyed the atmosphere and service at Fortunate Son, but probably would not come back if I was in the mood for Chinese (American) food. read more
Fortunate Son has such a cool vibe inside. The decor and atmosphere make it a really fun spot to grab a bite with friends or family. The customer service was amazing and everyone was super friendly and attentive. They're open pretty late which is nice, but I definitely recommend making a reservation because the wait can be over an hour if you walk in. The food overall was good, just a bit salty for my liking. I ordered the fried rice and it ended up being one of my favorites. I loved how much meat was in it and it had great flavor. The house noodles were my second favorite and also packed with a generous amount of meat which I really liked. The green beans and bok choy were a little too salty for me since I prefer my veggies more lightly seasoned. The honey walnut shrimp was the best though. The shrimp were big, juicy, and perfectly cooked. That dish was definitely my favorite on the menu. The cream cheese wontons were your classic appetizer, crispy and creamy just how you'd expect. The orange chicken was really good too, with a nice touch of orange zest that gave it extra flavor. Overall the food was a bit salty for my taste, but the customer service, atmosphere, and overall experience were amazing. Kungpao Chicken 8.65/10- this was really good! The kung pao chicken had a thin sauce but it actually made me like it more. I loved that it wasn't super thick and heavy like a lot of other places make it. The chicken was tender and flavorful, and you could actually taste all the ingredients instead of everything being coated in sauce. The peanuts added great crunch and texture. Dan Dan Noodles 8.56/10- I loved the peanut sauce mixed with chili oil! The noodles were cooked perfectly and had amazing texture. However I thought it would be a bit spicier since it's marketed to be spicy. Still very good and the flavors were there, but I was expecting more heat. The peanut sauce was creamy and rich though which I really enjoyed. Fried Rice 8.72/10- very good and I liked the flavors! The rice had great seasoning and texture with nice little bits of egg and vegetables throughout. It was definitely oily though, which is typical for fried rice but could have been toned down a bit. Orange Chicken 8.83/10- I liked how the orange chicken had a bit of spice to it! That was a nice surprise and really elevated it beyond typical orange chicken. The batter wasn't too much which I appreciated - you could actually taste the chicken. It wasn't too saucy either which was perfect. The orange flavor was tangy and sweet without being overwhelming. Shrimp and Pork Dumplings 8.43/10- I liked how these had more of a shrimp flavor to it! You could really taste the shrimp which was fresh and sweet. The pork added nice depth but the shrimp was definitely the star. The dumpling wrapper was thin and delicate, and they were cooked perfectly. The portions are big and great for family style! The prices are also so good - you definitely get great value here. I absolutely loved the ambiance of this place. It feels as if you are transported to another world with their lighting and decorations. The whole vibe is so immersive and cool. The service was also very good and food came out fast, which was impressive considering how busy it was. Definitely a busy place! Super great vibe and really solid food. The inside has a darker red lighting that gives it a slightly moody feel. I ordered the Schezuan green beans, Honey Walnut Shrimp, General Tso's Chicken, and the Dan Dan noodles. Everything tasted AMAZING. The green beans were perfect, the shrimp was sweet with a nice crunch and was certainly my favorite dish of the night. It does get busy. There was a line out the door when I went on a Friday night, so make sure to make a reservation. Parking can take a little extra time too. Slightly better but doubly expensive Panda Express, just with an amazing ambiance. Food: 3/5 The star of the show was the Honey Walnut Shrimp. The shrimp were huge, and the caramelized walnuts were broken up and sprinkled all over so you could taste it in every bite. The portions were alright--three dishes were enough for two people. The Orange Chicken felt like there was more dough than chicken. I wouldn't say the food blew my mind; it's just a step up from Panda Express, honestly. Service: 3.5/5 Our server was nice! The waitstaff made themselves available if you needed anything while dining. We made a reservation online and indicated it was for a special occasion, but nothing special was done. We didn't expect anything, really, but it doesn't make too much sense to have the option to mark our dinner as a special event on the reservation website. Atmosphere: 4.5/5 It was warm and dimly lit, which made the dinner feel very romantic. We really had dinner by candlelight. The music was a bit loud where we sat--the speaker was right above us. 1.5 hour wait- but it was worth it. The server we had was really nice as well. Here is what we ordered: Dan dan noodles- 9/10 really good and i loved the greens on top Shrimp and pork dumplings- 4/10 kind of fishy, i personally would not get them again Green beans- 9/10 again really good and crispy On the house they gave us the crab rangoon- 10/10 - i am coming back specifically for these. One of my favorite places to take friends/family when they visit San Diego! Amazing ambiance, yummy food, and great service. The portions are big! Great for family style! And the prices for the amount of food you're getting is so worth it. You can also order their food at the bar next door which is super convenient! The inside is decorated so cute and the vibes are always great. My personal favorites on the menu are the Crab Rangoon's, Dan Dan Noodles, and General Tso's Chicken! I have heard mixed reviews about this place, so I finally got to experience it myself. The place was quite small, but the overall aesthetic of the place was clean and stellar. We had a reservation as well and were seated right away. I am someone who looks at menus before I go places and I had my eye on something that was not on the menu anymore. I forgot to take a picture of the updated menu, however the beef dish I got was one of the newer items. The food was family style so great to share. Both dishes I felt were really yummy, not too salty, and good portions. If anything, I wish there would have been a little more ribeye because it was tasty. I have not ate in the restaurants, but I typically get drinks at polite provisions, and then order fortunate son. And eat it in the bar. I would suggest the walnut shrimp, hands-down, the best thing on the menu! Followed by the orange chicken and green beans. The hot and sour soup was not good so I would skip on that one. First time here and the food is just like Panda Express lol ! Waited two hours to be seated for a party of 7. No reservations. It's really dim inside so kind of hard to see your food too. Obviously the decor is really pretty! We almost tried everything on the menu. Everything we ordered was decent but some plates were very salty. There's no parking so good luck with that! 5/5 stars for the cool people that work there. Pricing isn't bad for what it is either. read more
Fortunate sons is another CH-project restaurant which in most people's opinion is mid at best when it comes to the food but I was pleasantly surprised with this one. The best way I can explain it is that it's Panda Express but elevated. Everything we had was delicious! The noodles didn't feel super oily and the chicken was crispy and seasoned very well. Not to mention the green beans we had were just right. I love the interior and overall vibe of this place. It reminds me of San Francisco Chinatown back in the day. They definitely don't miss when it comes to decor. I only wish the tables were a bit more practical in terms of size. They're small and round which became hard when we had several plates coming out. The service was kind and very attentive. The prices are also extremely affordable for the experience and quality of food. I definitely recommend checking this place out if you want a casual date night or something fun but different with your friends! read more

Yet another entirelyyyy overrated CH production. They make it so "exclusive" with their hours long wait times despite there being a bunch of empty tables at any given time. The service is horribly slow, lacking warmth and attention. The food is nothing better, if not even worse, than your average Chinese takeout spot on the East coast. Every dish was either drenched or swimming in an overwhelming amount of sauce taking away from the dish entirely as that's all you taste rather than the food itself. If you're looking for Chinese American, with everything else that San Diego and the Convoy area have to offer - Hard pass on Fortunate Son. read more

Gillian was amazing! I have several food allergies which causes a bit of anxiety eating out, but she made me feel genuinely taken care of and comfortable. There was a slight mishap out of her control but she and the team went above and beyond to end things on a high note. We used to live closer or I'd say we'd be back soon, but we'll definitely keep FS in our back pocket when hosting friends. read more
I was fortunate to place an order from its sister establishment. Unfortunately, I couldn't dine-in...it was all booked up that day. I figured things happen for a reason. It was easy...just let the bartender know. Suprisingly, my food came quickly...not bad at all. All was good and tasty. I really enjoyed the food...a most fortunate pairing with my cocktail and seamless service...a most fortunate experience. Next time, I'll have the good fortune of dining in. read more

Absolutely love this place! I take all of my friends here when they're coming to visit. The ambiance and aesthetic is so beautiful, it quite literally transports you. The staff are incredibly polite and the food is soo good that you'll get cravings for it! My favorite are the honey walnut shrimp, shrimp and pork dumplings, and the green beans. But honestly, you can't go wrong with this menu, everything is truly delicious. I'd just say to make sure you make reservations ahead of time because it is a popular place and it is a bit small. read more

The service here was extremely disappointing. The waitlist was not managed accurately, and the host, Josh, was very condescending throughout the interaction. Although our party was first on the waitlist, he repeatedly seated multiple groups ahead of us, including parties at tables that were large enough to accommodate our group. At one point, he seated a party of two at a table that could have fit us and told us we would be able to sit there only after they finished eating. His attitude was dismissive and disrespectful, and the overall experience left us feeling unwelcome. After waiting and receiving poor service, we decided to leave. I would not recommend this restaurant based on our experience. read more

First time visit and the servers were AMAZING! Foods were freshly prepared and portions were family size so there were enough plus more for the 4 of us! We had a 530pm reservation so it was perfect, starting with the parking lot behind the restaurant (handicap parking is NOT free) :( Although the restaurant wasn't as big as I thought, but was quaint, stylish in Asian decor & comfortable for all different size of parties! read more

Super cool place, very well decorated, we did Chinese style Funky, cool, great music, pretty loud too. And fairly good food. We have the orange chicken, honey shrimp, some noodles, fried rice, cucumber, salad, and some of the green beans which were OK. It's fun and happening. I just wish they had an open bar. read more
We had a delicious night out with friends here! It was all our first time going here and we enjoyed everything we ate. From the Orange Chicken, Beef & Broccoli, Fried Rice, Salt & Pepper Shrimp to the Lo Mein Noodles...it was all so yummy! The portions are family size so great for groups or for a big appetite! We saw on the Instagram reel about this cool and beautiful decor Chinese restaurant. The place is small and tight. The waiting time to eat inside with the fancy decors took us about 1-3 hours wait. They have limited seating outside as well. Good luck finding a parking spot in this area. The food was meh. This is an American version Chinese food. read more
The wait is long, we had a reservation and still had to wait a bit. And the restaurant is very small so you have to wait outside. But our length of wait was worth it. The food was absolutely wonderful. The portions are family style so you get plenty of food. We ordered the walnut shrimp, beef and broccoli, and got a fried rice. All of that was great and the following day. The Szechuan hot chicken wings are not spicy at all and they had the perfect crisp to them. The crab rangoons were just okay. There is not much filling in it, it is mostly just the wonton wrapper. I would not recommend getting them because it not worth the money for how little you get, unless you enjoy wonton wrappers. Overall was a okay experience but we won't be back. We had a reservation for two at 3pm when they opened. Was quickly seated. Our server was excellent, checked on us an appropriate amount of times, and was very informative about the menu as it was our first time. The food came at a decent time. We ordered the salt & pepper shrimp (8/10), orange chicken (5.5/10) & the lo mein noodles (9/10). The only thing that arrived at our table that was hot was the shrimp unfortunately, everything else was actually pretty cold. We were told portion sizes are shareable, and they are but if you've eaten Chinese in Convoy, the sizes are quite small in comparison. The ambience lived up to expectations, as it was very beautiful on the inside. Not sure if today was just a really hot day but it was very hot on the inside, although they do have fans running--it was much cooler outside. Overall a nice experience & pretty cheap compared to convoy. Probably much better ambience at night with all the pretty lights though! read more
We waited two hours in a Friday night after checking in at 4:45pm. We were sat outside but the heater kept us warm. The service was surprisingly quick. We ordered the crab ragoons which were amazing, the wonton soup delicious wonton, with a simple but flavorful broth, and jumbo shrimp, general tsos chicken delicious, beef and broccoli so good. read more
While at polite provision, got hungry and decided to order from here. So glad we did. The food was pleasantly good. I really like the general tso, the wings had a good crunch to it but lack flavor and spice which was disappointing as I was expecting some heat. We tried a few different dishes to make sure we got the full experience. The service was great and the ambiance of the place is very lively but intimate. The interior is so beautiful! I just loved the red lanterns and dragon. They had some red lanterns that made the vibe intimate for date night. It's pretty small and cozy inside so not a good place to bring a huge party. More of a romantic date night! On the food.... lol...Okay... so we were the only Asian patrons there which kind of said a lot. The food was very Americanized and kind of salty. The portions are massive though. I'm not the biggest fan of Chinese food bc I usually find it bland but WOW THIS PLACE IS AMAZING. The chicken was SO crispy and flavorful. The mushrooms were juicy and perfectly seasoned!! The dandan noodles were expertly spiced and just so good. 10/10 aesthetics. 10/10 service. 10/10 food. Love it so much and hoping to be back soon! read more

Yes,but be prepared to wait especially if you want indoor dining. Restaurant is small but so worth the wait. As someone else mentioned, get there early for first seating

They have a lot of foods that do not have gluten naturally. I was there tonight and didn't see a specific GF option on their breaded entrees.…
Can this place accommodate a party of 16?
Yes but you will have to wait to be seated might take up to 3 hours
Is this restaurant owned by a POC (person of color)?
No it's not POC owned, It's own by Consortium. Fortunate Son's chef Tony Guan I believe is a POC.
We tried to go tonight around 6:30 pm and were told there was a 3 hour wait for a table...? How is this possible and how do we manage this if there are no reservations? Many customers in line has the same question.
There's no trick to trying to get in on the weekends, outside of NOT trying on the weekends unless you're prepared to grab yourself a nice table at Polite Provisions and wait it out. Tuesday/Wednesday are less busy if you get there anytime before…

Just called and asked ahead of Valentine's Day. They are not taking reservations at this time. It's a normal waitlist, first come first serve.
