Food keeps getting worse... poor service.

We stopped in for lunch and got the roll + salad special, and some assorted nigiri. First impression is that the space is nice and open, and definitely can be a great spot for drinks and light food. Very pleased with the special, great price and size for a quick stop. Oriental salad and Caesar salad were excellent. The sushi was only so/so. Many reviews I read complained about the rice being bland, and they are absolutely right. While they give a generous portion of fish for nigiri, the cuts seemed a little too thick for the rice. TheYum-Yum roll however was very tasty and I would have that again anytime. The eel was also good, but not the best. Slightly undercooked as you want the skin just a little crispy, not soft or chewy. Overall, I like the atmosphere and the location, but will only keep it as a drink and light lunch. read more

Great food, nice drinks. Our waitress was completely candid with every detail. Some of the fish is fresh, some is flash frozen but in a manor good enough it didn't make it taste like crap. The artistry of their sushi was superb. The only thing I did not like was putting green horse radish with the fresh ground wasabi on the shogun shooters they grow it in Oregon now just make everybody pay a bit more, those who know the difference would gladly pay it. read more

I love their sushi!! Most of their rolls are baked, which makes you feel like you're getting a hot meal, but it's sushi! On Wednesdays you can get half price bottles of wine, Thursday's are half price martinis and cocktails, and Sunday's are half price sushi! I normally don't write reviews, however this place struck a nerve with me so I felt obligated to share my experience with whoever cares. My girlfriend and I go out for sushi about every two to three weeks and typically spend around $100.00 on good sushi and drinks. I wouldn't say we are "sushi snobs", but we definitely know quality when we see it. After hearing everyone rave over Forty Five degrees for several months, we decided to go check this place out. Needless to say, it will be the last time we dine there. Our waiter was rude and short with us, and took an extraordinarily long time to bring us anything we needed. Oh, and lets not forget that we were only one of two tables he had due to the lack of people in the restaurant on a Thursday evening around 7p.m. In any case, his attitude was so discourteous that he made us feel like we were troubling him if we needed another Sapporo or God forbid a refill on water. I'm a waiter too, so I understand how it goes sometimes when someone's having a bad night. For that reason, I can mildly discard the dreadful waiter condition since he was hardly around anyways. However, the waiter had nothing to do with the quality of sushi and/or the lack of it in the portion size. We like to get the 12.00-16.00 specialty rolls since we really appreciate good sushi. When the food was delivered to our table, I thought for sure there was a second plate shortly following. Nope. That was it. It was very obvious that management was cutting back on overhead cost due to the lack of business, and was therefore skimping out on the portion size. If you spend $100.00 on sushi and a couple beers, wouldn't you want to walk out of the restaurant fool and satisfied? Okay, well that was definitely two strikes so far, what was could go wrong? Oh, how about the deafening base that the live D.J. in the restaurant played. It was so loud that I could barely hear my girlfriend talk sitting right next to me! Do you think you could turn it down a notch?? It would be nice to carry on a conversation during dinner. Finally the décor, was very contemporary and unique, but in a very contemptible way. It felt like I was sitting in an episode of Sex and the City with snobs all around me and I was the outcast. Like I said, I hardly write reviews because I'm very tolerant of people, food, and restaurants. However, I feel there are far better places in Indy to get some good sushi. read more

Interesting vibes in this place, I feel like I'm in Miami whenever I decide to eat here. The sushi is decent, nothing that stuck out to me too much on the menu though. The vibe is cool but it can get pretty loud in there if the dj is playing. The only day I wouldn't go is Sunday. It's half price sushi day and the place gets PACKED with people. I would go here on a different day just to be able to enjoy the environment and a conversation. They have drink features everyday, normally good drinks at nice prices. The bartenders can make some awesome martinis. Definitely a good place to bring a large group because they have some big, really neat shaped tables to sit at. read more

Horrible! What kind of sushi restaurant doesn't know how to serve (or make) miso soup?? The sushi was meh (and you won't be impressed either if you've eaten sushi in any city where you can find sushi restaurants that don't include cream cheese in their rolls - not saying it's all bad, just saying if you've never eaten sushi in a city where this is possible, we're not rating on the same scale; sorry, but true) and the main point of the menu was sugar-filled rainbow 'martinis'. A fun time for a casual night out, but the menu makes it clear that they have struggled to find an identity as a restaurant. It includes supposed Asian fusion staples such as Broccoli and Beef as well as Ramen and a suspiciously nonspecific "Curry." If these crowd pleasing but underwhelming selections aren't appealing, you can always try the burger or the ever present Alfredo pasta. The sushi rolls feature exciting names such as "samurai" and "Mt Fuji," but do not be fooled by these references to Japanese heritage. Rolls are loaded in salty sweet sauces, spicy Mayo, and are often fried before being stacked in an artistic formation. The most popular roll is covered in aluminum foil and lit on fire, a nice party trick but a questionable presentation for raw fish. When the restaurant is busy, the combined effects of these rolls quite literally singes the airways. In a final struggle for ethnic identity, each dish, from the potstickers to the sushi to the teriyaki chicken is finished with a confusing sprinkling of oregano. I give 3 stars because this restaurant knows what it is - a peppy location for pseudo-Asian fare that appeals to the masses. Avoid if looking for an interesting ethnic experience. read more

We stopped by for a late afternoon meal on Sunday and a place to chat about our tour/experience of the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library. We were seated quickly and offered menus. Enjoyed the trendy modern ambiance, but the music was so loud we couldn't hear ourselves talk. We offered our regrets and left without sampling the sushi or other offerings. Good place to sit and swipe at one's smartphone, but for genuine conversation? Not in my experience of it. read more

Not really my crowd, but pretty good nonetheless. They have half price sushi on Sundays and half price martinis on Thursdays so I enjoy going for those deals. The plastic chairs are a little bit strange and cheapy feeling and sometimes the music is too loud for the time of day. It's smoke free so that's a big plus. I wish they would add a few more options for veggie sushi - I get jealous of all my friends' fun options :^) The service is slow, slow, slooooow so be prepared. read more

The atmosphere at Forty Five Degrees is pretty cool. I really liked the modern decor. I think it's cool that they have a DJ going during dinner which adds energy and makes this a great place for young professionals to go grab some sushi. It won't give the romantic feel if that is what you are looking for but its great for friends and groups looking to get some sushi and drinks. I pretty much go here every Sunday for half priced sushi and it's fantastic. I haven't tried anything that is on the menu but the sushi is great. read more

The sushi rolls are decent to good, I enjoy the 45 degree roll. It definitely has a modern feel to it which is better suited to dining after the sun is down.. I'd argue that it is more superman's ice kingdom (aka fortress of solitude) than starship enterprise. I would, however, support the addition of a wookie roll to the menu and would order it regardless of how palatable it is. also, I would appreciate a few more mixed drink options that are more old school cocktails and not so sweet. overall, good for a sushi fix especially because its local. read more

Although I always have a hard time finding just the right sushi combo here, i do still recommend Forty Five Degrees. The location is great, right along Mass Ave. The sushi roll and salad lunch combo is a great deal. And the 1/2 price sushi and $5 mojitos on Sunday night are hard to beat. This has been by far my favorite sushi restaurant downtown for years. I love the miso, rolls, and definitely the cocktails here. A trendy bar atmosphere that you can dress up or down for. The restaurant has a beautiful bar and the best mojitos. Try the Godzilla roll or the new spider roll. The miso has tons of tofu and seaweed in it which is appreciated. One of my regular stops as an Indy resident. 100% would recommend. read more

Came for DevourDowntown. Food was fair on all levels. Dance music was a disruption during dinner conversation. Staff was nice. Would be overpriced if not during DevourDowntown pricing. all 5 people in party had mixed reactions about food. generally speaking meats were over cooked. (tilapia,and chicken 3 different ways). portion are about right. tried the spicy tuna sushi. It was average based on sushi eaters experience. took about 30 mins to get food when restaurant was 40-45% full. read more

This is my favorite go to spot downtown. Not fine dining but great atmosphere. The half price sushi rolls on Sunday are a real hit and usually a little wait to get a table, but well worth the wait. I love the way they bend the traditional Sushi by using different ingredients and techniques, just order the playboy roll and you'll see what I mean. read more

I come here a couple of Sunday's a month because you can't beat half-price sushi and a $5 bloody mary (or long island ...or mojito). It's a fun atmosphere and if you come with a party of two, you're seated pretty quickly. Larger parties take a little longer (obviously). My only frustrations have been that sometimes the drinks are "meh" and the waitstaff has been hit or miss. I never know if I'm going to get someone awesome and attentive or someone with no personality, that I have to find if I need something. Overall, I enjoy coming here and I do recommend it if someone wants sushi! read more

I had high hopes when this place first opened. Mass Ave definitely needed a sushi restaurant. The sushi IS excellent. Prepared properly, with fresh ingreedients, and presentation worthy of the uber-trendy atmosphere in which you are sitting. But be warned: if you order something other than sushi, it's amiss. I've had cold pasta and burnt fish. Stick with the sushi. The drinks are the other reason for the 2-star rating. This place takes the prize for the most overpriced, watered-down cocktails on Mass Ave. Pours are stingy, martinis are watery, and cocktail glasses are small. For a place that wants to be a trendy "alternative" ultra lounge style establishment, they should know that proper (aka stiff) drinks are imperative. Epic fail. read more

What a great lunch! Nate was our server and he was phenomenal. The Mount Fuji roll was delicious and ample enough to fill you up. The ceaser salad with the capers had a unique and distinct flavor that leaved you guessing but intrigued. The ambiance is diverse and modern contemporary. Plenty of arm, leg and dining space when with guests. Price was comparable to most sushi restaurants with a nice mix of other items for non-sushi lovers. They even have a lunch special for under 8 dollars...on Mass Ave that is a steal! read more

This place is so cool. The decor is so fancy! I like sushi but don't LOVE LOVE it. They have a bunch of other options though. I had the lettuce wraps and they were amazing! They have half price sushi on Sundays which my boyfriend is obsessed with but they also have great drink specials on Thursdays so that's my favorite day to go. Best sushi I've had so far. First time in Indy and I went this past Sunday during their half off night with my friend who lives there. I had the corona roll and the chicken spring rolls. The half off drinks were watered down a bit, I had a mojito and a Long Island. The service was great and the restaurant was great. The only issue I had was with the hostess who took down my friends name and wrote next to it "2 black girls." My friend made a comment about it sarcastically and the girl just laughed about it. read more

I went here on a Sunday night and arrived at about 9:30. It took my friend 10+ minutes to be greeted by our sever who didn't tell us her name. (Later found out it was Kristi) It took 10+ minutes to get beers, including for my friend to get her first one after me and my partner already had ours for some time. The food was delicious honestly, I cant complain about that on any front but the way the restaurant handled closing with customers was the icing on the trash cake of the experience. They seriously started breaking down the restaurant and stacking chairs with like 4-5 tables still occupied by eating customers. I work on Mass Ave as well and understand service and this was an abhorrence to me. As If it couldn't get any worse, it does! Our servers sat down in public in a booth for the whole restaurant to see and started counting their money! Counting their money in front of all the customers. I couldn't believe it. We also got dessert to go and the server assured us she would package my friends brownie+icecream separate so it wouldn't be ruined but she didnt do that of course. I stopped in on a Wednesday for lunch with a friend and was unimpressed. Some of the things I look for in a restaurant are good food, good value, good service, does my water glass stay filled, and do I feel confortable there. I'd give them a 2 out of 5. The tast of the food was good. It was pricey for lunch and for how much I got. The service was terrible. We had a new waiter and it showed. He brought us someone elses sushi when we didn't order any, brought the wrong thing for my lunch and I had to wait while my friend ate, forgot to split our check, and everything was VERY slow. It took over an hour from when we ordered until we had our checks/cards returned to us. I had to leave at one point to add more to the meter. My water stayed filled, but my friend had to ask twice for another coke. Between the awkwardness of the waiter and the frustration of how long it took, I'd never go back for lunch. If I was with a group that wanted to go in the evening and we had zero time restriction, I'd be ok since the food was good, but I doubt I'd recommend it. read more

Took about 50 customers here during a convention in Indy. They LOVED it! Was great to get out of the hotel and downtown. The hotel's shuttle took us and picked us up. The staff was terrific - listened to what I wanted for the evening and delivered, made my guests feel special. Great job and thanks! read more
