My husband and I came for dinner this evening. The restaurant was full and lively. The list of wines was nice with wines that you usually do not see on menus such as carmenere. I ordered the sea scallops which came with homemade fettuccine, I was very excited to try it. The presentation was very nice but when I dove in, it was very acidic and had a sour taste. I ate what was tolerable such as the scallops and toppings. The waitress seemed very busy and brought bread halfway through our meal. Realizing my meal was $28.00 was not worth it for it's taste. This place is always busy and the setting is beautiful. Beer selection was decent. I was not impressed by cocktail menu, too much sweet. Bread basket was diverse but not warm or very tasty. Service was friendly enough. Menu was diverse so many price points which is good. I had fish tacos. They were just ok and way overstuffed and dripping like crazy. The yuca fries were nice. My husband had a sausage plate which was a bit boring but fine. Kids had the spaghetti, ok but no cheese topping and meatballs burnt on one and undercooked on the other two. Also a kid had grilled cheese, he ate it... didn't like the veggie side. Would be nice for kids to have a fruit side. So it was descent but not a stand out other than location and obviously very popular so maybe we didn't get the right dishes. It was ok on family friendly. Eh. Not so great. Not sure what all these wonderful reviews are about. Ordered a Diet Coke that wasn't Diet Coke; it was some disgusting tasting drink. Had to trade it for a seltzer water. Mussels were ok. Not great. Lots of sand in them. French dip sandwich had meat (brisket) that was cut the wrong way. Someone should explain that you cut against the grain, not with it. Even the ketchup was off brand and meh. Some woman was walking around with a clipboard and looked like a drill sergeant. Creepy. Had the bread pudding for dessert. It was rubbery; could have bounced it off the wall. Someone should also explain that you don't put bread in a microwave. Music was blasting. Too expensive, and not too great. The center of Sandy Hook in Newtown has become a bustling little restaurant destination spot. When we drove through town Figs (the restaurant next door) had a busy parking lot and when we got to The Foundry it was packed. We managed to get a seat at the downstairs bar where there was live music and started with two Bulldog Gin Elderflower Pear Martinis, excellent start. The menu is fun & refreshing with Middle Eastern, Asian, & East Coast American influences. The Chef is obviously in the game when it comes to the current food trends of the moment. "Bacon & Eggs" as an app, bottles of sriracha at the bar, brussels sprouts with mortadella Italian sausage, and the use of quinoa and tabouli as starches to accompany entrees. Even though the menu has a ton of ethnic influences the place still manages to give the impression of a cohesive concept that is hip, spicy, casual chic. The menu has a clever way of luring you into trying something new by cushioning out of the ordinary dishes such as a pork cheek crostini appetizer with pickled butternut squash, pistachios, and brandied grapes next to more familiar comfort dishes such as bacon bleu skins. The presentation is whimsical and entertaining a la David Burke. Meaning sauces served in mason jars and food on wooden planks will be popping up everywhere. Build your own crepes with nutella are a standout on the dessert menu though I am sure they will soon be overshadowed by an ice-cream sandwich since it is predicted to be the biggest dessert trend for 2014. And this place knows how to keep up with the trends. I ordered fried calamari with Korean ketchup & szechuan peppercorns followed by the short rib and rigatoni pasta in a madeira wine veal broth with root vegetables. To be honest I wish I ordered something different but I sometimes get sucked into the need for fried calamari and pasta when I go out. When I go back I am going to do a better job of ordering. I wish I had gotten the Indonesian Street Cart Chicken Sandwich with sambal curry mango on grilled flatbread. When it comes to the wine list I get really excited. The owners have done a fantastic job of putting together a short wine list that offers interesting less well known varietals such as Albarino & Gruner Veltliner alongside old standbys like Cab & Pinot Grigio. If you are going to order wine order it by the bottle. You will almost always get a better deal ordering a bottle over a glass in any restaurant. The wine list hits all the right notes with selections such as Matua Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough New Zealand ($30 btl) and Pascual Toso Malbec, Mendoza Argentina ($31 btl). It would basically be wrong, put a big red X over the wine list if they didn't include a New Zealand Sauv Blanc & Argentinian Malbec because they are just THAT popular right now. But The Foundry got it right. Not only does the wine list offer a cool unique selection but it also picks wines that will pair well with the cuisine. Ethnic spicy foods pair really well with sparkling wine, Gruner Veltliner, Riesling, and Albarino. With only 30 white wine selections offered they managed to offer all the right pairing options. In particular the Gruner Veltliner by Brunn produced in Austria would be an awesome pairing with the Ethiopian spiced Buffalo wings. Gruners are usually crisp & zingy with a touch of effervescence that will stand up to spicy tangy wings. I ordered a 2011 Byron Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara ($32 btl) and that's a deal- California Pinot Noirs are not cheap. There are a good amount of red selections as well including petite Sirah, Zinfandel, and Grenache (a great spicy rich red to go with that Indonesian Street Cart Chicken Sandwich). All in all The Foundry is great for an entertaining night out. I'll be heading back real soon. read more

Delicious food! We went on a late Sunday afternoon and enjoyed a fantastic brunch. I had the vegan banh mi, my husband had the inside out burger and the children had chicken wings, pasta carbonara and a grilled cheese sandwich that came with yummy tater tots. Amazing food....could be 4-5 stars but the service is atrocious! I had to ask for water multiple times and still didn't get it.....had to drink my wife's. My wife asked for Parmesan cheese to go along with her pasta dish and by the time it was received, her food was cold. Entrees arrived before appetizer dishes were cleared. We had to ask someone to clear them so we had room to eat. So much potential in the restaurant wasteland of Western CT, but we won't be back due the poor service on multiple trips. read more

Visited for the first time last night on a friend's recommendation and had a great seat, meal and service. The bacon and eggs app was a favorite, along with the inside out burger. Fried calamari has a nice little bite in the sauce, not overpowering the fresh octopus flavor and texture. We ended with the ginger carrot cake with fresh whipped cream and strawberries, happy we saved space to enjoy. Each item on the app menu looks good, I plan to get back to try them all. read more

Love this place! Great atmosphere, great food and the bathrooms are clean. I gave not a full 5 stars because the service is a bit slow and upstairs it's super dark! The couple next to us had to use their phone's flashlight to read the menu it was so dark. I get what they're going for but it's needs a little brightening. Great interior design even down to the little details. Food is excellent but the portion sizes are questionable, we ordered nachos and it was so large that we didn't need to order a meal. The Foundry has the potential to be a great venue to be with friends, have drinks, and have dinner. When we arrived, the hostess seemed confused and disheveled. We gave our name for a patio table and went to the bar for a cocktail to wait. The bar service was good. Once we were seated on the patio, the table was severely uneven so we moved to another table. Trying to get napkins and table settings at the new table was a challenge (we had to get up and get our own) as was getting a drink and prompt service of food. When we got our food, it was good and priced fairly. Moderately disappointed with The Foundry because the location is very nice, the restaurant atmosphere and building is nice but the service is underwhelming and disappointing. We will try it again with the hopes that tonight was a one-off. read more

The Foundry is our new go-to restaurant in the area. Great ambiance, live music Tuesdays and Saturdays, food is always well prepared and interesting. We always seem to get seated near the bar and the service is excellent - crew members passing by fill our water glasses or clear plates. I'm finally shamed into a review after about 8 check-ins. The menu usually has a middle eastern influenced touch - Indonesian street cart chicken sandwich, Ethiopian spice wings, hummus in the Middle Eastern salad. There's also mainstays like calamari, dumplings, roast chicken, and usually some good fish selections. The biggest problem is deciding what to eat with so many interesting choices. Prices are reasonable, food is unique, service is excellent, what more could you want? I'm just afraid word of mouth will make it too busy. read more

Our first time here. met some friends for dinner on the deck. The menu is very eclectic but for the less adventurous they also have a traditional tavern menu. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. Had the octopus as an appetizer and the pork chop for entree and I literally did not leave a single crumb on either plate. The rest of our group also enjoyed their food. Went back for drinks about a week later. Enjoyed the Ethiopian wings with a nice IPA. Friendly crowd at the bar on an early Friday evening. read more

A beautiful setting, but my corned beef Reuben was inedible. There was so much fat on the corned beef that by the time I cut it all off, there was barely half a sandwich worth of meat. Restaurants like Foundry Kitchen and Tavern make me a really happy camper. My department came here last night for our Christmas shenanigans and were quite pleased with what they had to offer. First off, the building in itself was pretty cool. With two floors, the downstairs being the main restaurant/bar, while the upstairs being solely dedicated to a lounge like area only serving appetizers, it seemed like there was a little bit of versatility depending on how you felt coming here. I've also been told that during the warmer months they open up the patio in the back overlooking the brook and you can dine out there as well. The menu was simple and to the point. Even though we ended up with the majority of the appetizers, enjoying sort of a sampler platter of everything if you will, I did have my eye on those fish tacos, so maybe next time I stop in I'll give them a shot. Out of the appetizers we ordered, my top choices had to be the pork cheek, the cripsy calamari, and the two different kinds of wings. The pork cheek was to die for, with super tender meat and a delicious artichoke puree to compliment it, definitely my top choice of the night. The calamari was done quite well, I didn't have to chew a million times to break up the pieces since they were so tender, and the Korean ketchup glazed on top was an amazing substitute to the common marinara sauce. Chicken wings are chicken wings, but the way they cooked these to make them fall off the bone good and not greasy or fatty whatsoever was impressive. Not to mention, the serrano sauce was delicious. Foundry's bar looked pretty well stocked from where I was sitting, having multiple types of bourbon, scotch, rum, etc. Their beer list wasn't half bad too and also had a few locals like Two Roads and City Steam on tap (I believe). Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to try anything crazy since I had a flag football game later that evening, but the Blue Point Toasted Lager they had on tap was as good as it should be. Attended a fundraiser event in the 'Loft' portion of this restaurant- so this review is only covering those aspects. What I can say- is that the event was incredibly professional and beautifully prepared. The appetizers and wine were amazing. they offered a tuna tataki on cripsy wontons that was a super nom and a wonderful foie with fig spread that left my mouth watering for more. The building itself is beautifully restored with elegant word work and solid hardwood floors. The staff was pleasant and quite accommodating. def seems like a solid place that I would feel quite comfortable spending an evening with wine or special date night. read more
