I always find myself at Four Cafe because it's close from my gym and somewhat close from my house. Plus they always have great selections of fresh salads, sandwiches, and baked goods. The baked goods can be a hit or miss but the sandwiches and salads are usually always great. The salad selections change based by season so sadly they don't have my usual Cobb salad. Service is always great, friendly, and helpful. _Picado Salad (half $8, full $12). Romaine, Arugula, Garbanzo beans, grilled corn, avocado, feta, cherry tomato, cucumber and kalamata olives w/basil tahini dressing. The half size always fills me up. Refreshing and simple salad. I love grilled corn, sweet and grilled nicely. The dressing is real light and has a nice citrus kick to it. I always get this salad and vary on half salmon $4 or half chicken $2.5 _Grilled fish burger ($13). Mahi Mahi, pickled onion, cheddar cheese, tartar slaw on a brioche bun. This is a great sandwich! Good amount of grilled fish. Very refreshing and the pickled onion adds a nice sweetness to it along with the great tartar slaw. The brioche bun is nice ans warm. It's a perfect sandwich any time of the day. Comes with a salad that has a great balsamic dressing to it. _Oatmeal cookie. I love their oatmeal cookie. Good size. It's pretty moist inside and has a nice crunch on the outside. Good ratio of raisins. This is my go to spot for lunch or dinner, especially when I'm craving a salad or something healthy. On the other hand, my mom's carrot ginger soup was good, as was my dad's grilled fish sandwich. Overall, I would suggest ordering the non-Mexican items. They seem to do better with that. Is it too early or too trite to call this the Eastside's minimalist answer to Joan's on 3rd? Metaphors and eastside/westside rivalry aside - the food is delicious, and isn't that all that matters? Four Cafe serves up salads (both at the table & from their salad case) and crunchy panini full of top notch items like Red Hawk triple creme brie and Point Reyes blue cheese. For beverages, they have iced teas, organic sodas and lemonades, all made in house. It's all very simple, unadorned food because the quality of the ingredients is what's important here. The greens in your Living Salad (kale, broccoli, arugula, nori, crunchy fried chickpeas, avocado dressing) are extremely fresh and crispy, and therefore, utterly satisfying. And so, so, SO conveniently close to my favorite wine shop, Colorado Wine Company. It's literally 2 or 3 doors down. Grab a pressed chicken/apple/brie panini to go and head over there for a glass of a crisp white wine, maybe a nice pinot grigio. Nice job dude, you are awesome! read more

Normally I really like four cafe. Last night though while I had a decent experience w/the food, the wait staff was highly lacking in just plain old courtesy. So I ordered the tri-tip tortilla soup...Amazing! Beautifully served and fantastic tangy spicy flavor w/just the right amount of crunch from small tortilla strips and brightness from fresh cilantro. I also had the grilled chicken w/peach jam sandwich. This sandwich has a lot of potential. They just need to find a way to cut the sweetness of the peach with something tangier or brighter. I went w/2 friends and we decided to go next store and grab a bottle of wine to open at the restaurant. The corkage fee is only $4.00. You can't beat that. Here's where the wait staff went downhill. The waitress opened our bottle for us and brought back the bottle and 3 glasses. She then handed me the cork and said, "I dropped the cork on the floor so you might want to wash it before you re-use it." Then she walked away. Wow. I guess if there were a sink in the middle of the table I could wash the cork that she dropped. Or I could have asked her if I could go use her sink in her kitchen to wash the cork she dropped. Or, she could have done what any thoughtful normal person would think to do in his/her own home and wash the cork that they dropped themselves. Needless to say, she also ignored us the rest of the night unless we asked her for something, but kindly checked on the table next to us. After laughing w/my friends about the absurdity of her ineptitude and all the imagined ways in which we could ask her to wash the cork. I just kindly asked her to wash it. Hopefully it wasn't too much trouble for her. Then we were brought back a soapy smelling cork to put in our wine so that we could have soapy tasting wine later...yum.... read more

A "full" order of salmon to go on your salad at $6.25 is ONLY 4oz (weighed before cooking for sure) - it's minuscule. That means they are selling you a tiny portion of salmon equal to $25 per pound!!! FYI: The most expensive wild salmon at whole foods retails for $15.99 per pound. Who feels ripped off? Seriously, this is a ridiculous mark up. The food here is terrific but the service is totally flakey and with this kind of rip off happening I'd rather buy myself some wild salmon (from WF or Fish King) and spring mix greens (what they call a "salad") and make dinner at home. read more

I looked forward to eating here with my daughter who spoke very highly of her times at this restaurant, however the young man who took the order at the register was not a good first impression. No smile No friendly greeting. Kids behind the counter at Burger King are more welcoming. The waitress was a robot. I asked about a glass of water and as she was walking away she pointed to the self service water container. My daughter did notice my irritation and told me that usually the person taking the order is much friendlier and the person who I encountered was unusual. However she did say that the serving lady always seems to be unhelpful and never smiles. I will not be visiting this place again. First impressions are the most important in the food service industry and my impressions were not positive. read more

I visited this cafe twice in one weekend: that's how good it is. The first time was on the recommendation of fellow Yelper Stephanie Castro. I got the slow roasted pork sandwich; she got the Grilled Asparagus sandwich & a side of Morroccan Carrots. I was disappointed in my sandwich: the pork was dry & I disliked the combination of mustard & orange. I love garlic aioli but I didn't taste any of it like I was supposed to. Overall there may have been too many competing flavors in the sandwich. I took bites of Stephanie's sandwich & realized I may have made a mistake. I had overlooked the Grilled Asparagus sandwich because of my meatist tendencies (tsk, tsk) but after tasting it I am now a convert to the meatless meal. The asparagus was perfectly cooked, deliciously nutty, & balanced by the salty feta & macerated fennal. This sandwich offers a beautiful balance of textures & flavors: tons of umami flavor from the combo of nutty asparagus & salty feta., creaminess from the avocado, & brightness & zing from the macerated fennel. Reading the sandwich's ingredients one might dismiss it but it is THE best thing on the menu. I couldn't stop thinking about that damn sandwich. I knew I had to come back. A few days later I went with another friend, promptly ordered the Grilled Asparagus sandwich, & was not disappointed. The flavor lingers pleasantly in the mouth, satiates your hunger but doesn't make you feel heavy or sleepy afterwards. The Moroccan Carrots were also a win; cumin, honey, & carrots is a classic combination. My one gripe is that it had more white beans than carrots (the carrots were slivered & barely present). It was delicious nonetheless, but the proportion of beans to carrots left me wondering if I had gotten the wrong order. I'd still get it again. Man, I wanted to like this place more. There's just little things Four Cafe could do to be so much better. Like - signage. When I walked in for dinner at 5pm (the time they open for dinner), no one was at the front and there was no sign stating whether I should wait to be seated, seat myself, leave and come back at 5:03 (?) I just stood there for a bit confused until someone from the back realized I was there and told me to order then seat myself. Service - very friendly. Perhaps, overly friendly. Staff stopped by a total of three times during my meal to make sure everything was okay. I felt like I was telling an insecure friend who'd gained a little weight that she was still pretty. Food: 3.5 out of 5. Would have been 4.5 but the smoked albacore was pretty tough. Smoked Albacore is my "desert island" food and I have no idea how they got it to be so rough. Pros: The design of the space is well-thought out. The food came quickly. They use local veggies, humanely-treated meat (which I'll pay more for). The dressing on the salad was lively. Been coming here since they opened but after what happened I won't be coming back until they fix this. I was waiting for my food on the bench so I could see into the kitchen. The cook with the tattoos on his arms SNEEZES into both hands and without stopping to even think about it, keeps touching the food. This is how Hepatitis and other diseases gets passed to customers. It's a small café with a dozen or so tables and a long bar inside, with a few tables outside facing Colorado Boulevard. It's a casual sort of quick service dining concept. You order your food at the deli case and they bring it to you table when it's ready. For a Sunday night it seemed pretty busy with a steady stream of sit-down customers and takeaway orders, which we took as a good sign. The employees were really efficient and helpful. The woman taking our order was nice enough, if not overtly friendly, but the man brining out our food was cheerful and helpful. Another man walked around the room throughout the night to make sure everyone was happy with their food. Overall the ambiance was peaceful and relaxing. They serve salads, sandwiches, sides and desserts. The menu appears to change seasonally, and we ordered two combinations of a full sandwich with a soup/salad/side at about $15 each. The first was a roasted tomato and kale sandwich with burrata on a ciabatta Panini with a ham and bean soup. Both were excellent and full of flavor, the Panini was really good and not overly toasted so it was hot, crispy and still soft enough to chew through. The second combination was the pork tenderloin sandwich on pretzel bread with a quinoa side. Again, both were excellent. The quinoa was tasty and well seasoned. We also ordered a sparkling water and a soda. Everything came out of the kitchen in timely manner. For dessert we took home some flat apple pie, a peach crisp and a caramel macaroon. The desserts were tasty, but not memorable enough to order again. The desserts sit out in the deli case and probably get a tiny bit stale sitting there. The flat apple pie had a nice flavor but was a little dry. The caramel macaroon was a little off- it had a good flavor, but the caramel was also so hard it was difficult to chew through -I've definitely had better. While the food was excellent and the ambiance was nice, the price was a bit high. For the two combinations, drinks and desserts we paid close to $50. Next time we'll skip the combinations, the soda and the desserts and just order sandwiches or soups. read more

The space is small but inviting, the food is healthy and delicious and the prices are reasonable for the quality and presentation of the food they serve. Everything I tried (pea soup, the Living Salad, roasted tomato panini) was very tasty and well-prepared, and the food is brought to you quickly and with a smile. Just left this place and was pretty disappointed. There were three of us there and we all received our food at different times which meant that some people's food was cold before they ate it. I ordered my eggs over hard, and when they came out they were quite runny. I asked them to be cooked more and when they brought them back out they were burt on one side and still runny. How can you mess up eggs? This speaks to the rest of the food as well. My boyfriend's potatoes were drenched in oil which ended up covering half the plate. The pancakes weren't cooked all the way through, although they tasted great. And my boyfriend's mom's pancakes were cold even though they had just came out of the kitchen. There wasn't concistancy at this place, or quality control. We noticed other plates with potatoes not covered in oil. No one asked us how our food was and would have gotten an earful if they had. I'm always impressed by the servers at Four Cafe - they're friendly, upbeat and quick. A lot of them appear to be very young which makes it all the more surprising to me how consistently professional they are. I think it says something good about a company when the staff is all very friendly and stick around for a long time. Also, since my last review, there seem to usually be two cashiers and the line moves quickly now. Menu changes every quarter. A lot of healthy options and the ingredients always taste fresh. My favorite thing to get here is a refreshing salad with tofu added as the protein. They have salads, soups, appetizers, sandwiches, and some deli sides, as well as a kid's menu, drinks like interesting lemonades, and lots of desserts. When it's in season, the mexican hot chocolate cookie is amazing. VEGAN NOTES: They have many things marked "vegan option" but you're just getting the menu item minus some ingredients for the same price and you're not allowed to substitute in that scenario which sucks. Also, beware that thrice I have ordered a sandwich and asked for the vegan option and they removed the cheese but used a dressing that was not vegan - so doublecheck if you're uncertain or have allergies. read more

On our way to the Colorado Wine Company for a glass, we stopped in at the new Four Cafe to pick up something to go. The owner/waiter was very helpful and offered to bring us our meal at Wine Co (just a couple of doors away) so we could enjoy our wine and meal together. He even brought us china and real silverware so we ate in relative elegance. There is talk of cart service between these two establishments, which sounds very civilized to me. The food is fresh and tasty. The English Pea soup benefits from some extra salt and pepper, but I thought the lentil curry soup was nicely seasoned with mild spices. The flank steak sandwich was really good and they replaced the mayo with flavored olive oil at my husband's request. We'veeaten there several times now. The grilled asparagus sandwich is great, but some people find the baguette too crunchy. I'll bet the chef would be willing to serve a softer roll or even make it into a pannini if you asked. read more

Would love to give this place five stars if they could get their act better together. I'll probably give them a second chance, but let's talk about this experience. Ordered half of the seasonal living salad and the mushroom pizza as the guy at the register *thought* they were out of kale rolls. He said the flatbread would be soft and pillowy but take about ten minutes. He assured me the salad would come out first. Twenty minutes later, I had to request my salad and then more dressing as it arrived with only a drizzle. Ten minutes after that, I had to ask for my flatbread. It came immediately - a dark brown color that looked the opposite of pillowy. Biting into it, my teeth crunched and gnawed on super tough, crispy bread. Really unfortunate as the flavor was fantastic an I did not have time to wait for another one. I mentioned said over cooked-ness to two waiters who looked kind of confused and blankly at me. One did say they could maybe give me a free dessert on the way out, but, that would have required flagging someone down an spending more time. Here is what we ordered: Cilantro Hummus & Pita Chip Smoked Salmon Cucumber Rolls Chopped Miso Salad Strawberry Spinach Hawaiian BBQ Pork Sandwich Grilled Cheece Sandwich Cupcakes We eat chinese style and divide up all the dishes. We all like all these dishes. I ate more of the Chopped Miso Salad for that went well with the wine we brought along. (This is ok to do.) One of the guys took care of us which we liked. When this place opened, I just figured it was another bullshit scenester eatery like Local, where they charge twelve fucking dollars for a plate of chilaquiles. Through the grapevine, I heard otherwise, so I checked it out last weekend. I'm glad I did! First of all, the prices are way reasonable for a spot this trendy. My brie and heirloom tomato strada was really delicious. I love the deli case, full of neat, inspired salads. The fruit salad that I had was full of fresh figs, peaches, and marcona almonds. My girl friend ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes, which were light and fluffy and also worth ordering. Service was nice. The coffee was fantastic. I've only been here for breakfast so far, but I'll definitely go back the next time I'm craving something light and local. read more

I have eaten here a number of times. The staff is friendly and the seasonal lemonades are great. But they are WAY too heavy handed on he dressings and mayos. Less is more people. The deviled eggs for example (which already have mayo as a main ingredient) are ALSO sitting in a large pool of aoli. Drowning out any deviled egg flavors. I have to scrape mayo off my sandwich even when I ask for lightly dressed salads it is is gross. I like the menu and I'm a sauce girl! But there is a point where it is just too much and the food is inedible. Lighten up the sauces guys. Let them ask for extra. You may even save some Money. read more

They have seasonal menus, so it depresses me that my favorite salad in the whole wide world is no longer available. I lalalalaLOVED their Waldorf steak salad!! I believe it was on their winter menu. Crispy lettuce, juicy grapes, candied walnuts, stellar blue cheese, topped with tender slices of steak cooked to a delicious medium. The lemony vinaigrette dressing was light and delicious. It all came together so well! I would always get the half portion and half protein, and it was always more than enough food for this fatty. But the other salads are good there too. Craving something tasty from a seasonal menu? Make a stop at Four Cafe! I love that the food here is flexitarian-friendly. Meat eaters won't starve here: one can add grass-fed beef, wild-caught salmon, or free range chicken to the mostly vegetarian-friendly dishes. And if you are vegetarian, you can stick with adding tofu or adding nothing at all. The flavors are fresh, light, but never bland. We ordered their chipotle chicken sandwich, coconut corn chower, and southwest salad with steak added (half order) and washed it all down with a refreshing mint lemonade. Everything was delicious and the portions are very generous. I liked the coconut corn chowder (vegetarian-friendly) so much that I plan to recreate it at home. And did I mention that that their desserts are baked in house and are to die for? WOW I was impressed by this little place hidden in Eagle Rock. Very friendly service at the counter offering helpful suggestions. We ordered the Brusel Sprouts to Share, a chicken noodle soup and the Mahi Mahi burger. If you are going there for the first time be sure to order the homemade sodas! I wish every restaurant offered this as a drink option, The Brussel sprouts came out first and unfortunately they had a not so great taste to them. uh-oh, when I told the server about it, he immediately offered to replace them with another option. as to not take advantage I looked to find something in a similar price range. I landed on the kids Mac & Cheese. GOOD CHOICE! it was awesome, perfectly baked mac & cheese, crispy on top and everything. The chicken noodle soup tasted fresh and homemade. The Mahi Mahi burger was stupid delicious! I would order again and again. I wish they would open a Four Cafe in West Hollywood and I'm so sad I only discovered this place as I'm moving away. Try it out, sooner than later you won't be disappointed. So, I've been here several times in the last couple months because I've been in the area and had nothing to do, why not grab a cup of coffee and a bite to eat and people watch on Colorado blvd? Exactly. The coffee is made fresh for you and it's quite good. I've also done the meatloaf sandwich which is pretty awesome and I don't even care for meatloaf all that much (wrapped in bacon? YES SIR!) The fish burger was my favorite, perfect down to the last detail, until I had the veggie chili and cornbread. I've been very exposed to vegetarian food over the last 2 years (I'm not a veggie) and this chili is the BEST hands down, especially on a cool day. The staff is extremely nice and more than helpful while I stand there and take forever deciding what to order. I think the price is slightly high but not for the fresh quality of food and service you receive, it's very fair all things considered. Tip: try and look at the menu before you head over there so you don't stand there drooling at the menu for extended periods of time like I do. I came across this place thanks in part to a friend of mine. We were meeting for a catchup dinner and she suggested this place as it was a mutually accessible place for the three of us. Parking wasn't bad for a Friday night, I was able to park in front of the place pretty easily. The place was about 3/4 full, with a mix of date night couples to families to just friends like us. You essentially order at the cash register and they will then bring it to a clean table for you to eat. I ordered the Tuscan Kale salad with Steak, the Asparagus Tart and a Strawberry Soda. I wasn't too hungry, ate the salad through. The kumquats mixed with the lemon vinaigrette with the Parmesan cheese gave it great flavor. It works great with or without the steak. You can opt for chicken and tofu as well. The asparagus tart had ricotta and Gruyere on a puff pastry crust. I ordered it to split with my friend. It was nice and tasty. Just enough flakiness and flavor. It was just good. I just wish it were closer to me as I would definitely come back for the great food. Service was good. I like the mellow feel. Beyond the 5 freeway towards Pasadena lies a mystical land called Eagle Rock. Charming, hipster, and increasingly trendy, it's a fun little place filled with lots of unique little boutiques and restaurants that I always remember I'm dying to try when I drive through. This past week I got to one of them - Four Cafe on Colorado Blvd, a fully organic restaurant boasting seasonal dishes made from exclusively local-bought ingredients. Structured like many restaurants are in Los Angeles these days, you order at the counter, pay, then take a number and your food is brought to you. I'm not sure how I feel about this apparent fad in restaurant dining, but I guess I don't have much choice. Besides, I'm a big fan of the earth-toned decor in this place. Rustic wooden tables, earthy wall treatments, plenty of outdoor seating, and an absurdly friendly girl behind the counter who had thorough knowledge of everything she was selling and was more than happy to chat us up about it - big points there. Now when one hears that a restaurant is fully organic and local, it can often lead to thoughts of boredom and salad and... vegans. But such is not the case at Four Cafe. Yes, there is plenty to choose from if you're a vegan or gluten free, but they also have items like the short rib grilled cheese made with braised short ribs, gruyere, onion, and horseradish, served on foccacia. My friend Kevin got this and was not at all disappointed. A quick peruse of yelp and you can find huge praise for their fish burger, house-made with fresh mahi mahi served on a brioche bun. My mouth waters just typing this. But on the day I visited I was not super hungry, so I opted for a bowl of soup. For those of you trying to watch your weight, soup is always a good go-to in restaurants, particularly when they are house made and vegan like they are here. Supremely earthy and satisfying with just enough wild rice to add a pop of texture. It warms you up and makes you feel good about yourself for making such a good decision. In fact I felt so good that I opted for one of their vegan gingersnap cookies. Moist, spicy, and absolutely delicious. I deserved it. On my list of things to try are the fish burger (of course) and the roasted veggie root salad, which comes with a chili mint dressing. Also - brown butter apple pop tarts!!! Mmmm. I have to say, I love when a restaurant like this isn't afraid to have some indulgent food along side all their vegan local wholesome creations. It shows they aren't pretentious - they really want to attract everyone, which is really important for a starving artist. Sometimes I want vegan soup, and sometimes I want an apple pop tart. I think what gets me about these "take-a-number" kind of places is that at the end of the day I don't feel like I'm saving any money by not having to tip a waiter. My bowl of soup and cookie came to $10.36. Worth it, yes, but I know if I had gotten a full salad or sandwich I would have been well over $15, which is not really a starving artist friendly kind of lunch. But in this case I'm ok with it because for one I know the ingredients are of the highest quality, and for another I am getting a meal that I can feel really good about eating. Let's face it, eating out healthy is not cheap, but a place like Four Cafe is your best bet for getting a good healthy bang for your buck. So, if you find yourself in Eagle Rock in the mood for a meal you can feel really good about (or maybe indulge instead), then definitely give Four Cafe a try. read more

It's like Eagle Rock finally joined the rest of LA... Regular business hours! Nice atmosphere, casual but nice! No fluorescent lights or diner food! You could take your parents here for lunch and everyone would be happy. The prices are the same as everywhere else in Eagle Rock and the food is way healthier and more fun. Plus the hours are great!!!! I think my next 4 weeks of meals out are spoken for... Minor note: My gingerade was heavy on the blood orange and lighter on the ginger.... This place is so ME. Healthy, flavorful, different, chill... Its so perfect and really adds a lot to E.Rock. I think the owner and employees put a lot of love into this place since I can tell they actually CARE about how our meal was. That says a lot. Chicken salad was spot on. Perfect ratio of lettuce to chicken to other toppings to dressing. Thats some AP math shit! EAt well and feel good about it! read more
