I normally go to Steve's Smog for smog testing as well as oil changes and other repairs. I love them and they are always kind and fair. I moved to Santa Rosa 2 years ago, but I have continued to go to Steve's. Recently, I went to Steve's for a smog, but it turned out that I needed to go to a "Star" station. They did my oil change and inspected my car. My battery died while it was there, just from the door being open, so they installed a new battery. Bernardo and Melody said that I could go to Four Corners (Star station) for the smog test. I went there immediately as I wanted to register my car at the Sonoma AAA office. At Four Corners I was charged about $70. I thought that was high, but I wanted to get it done. I found the woman in the office to be less than polite. A few minutes later, she told me to go inside and gruffly told me that my car didn't pass. She had gone from "less than polite" to RUDE. She wouldn't tell me why my car didn't pass, so I called Steve's. They told me that because I had a new battery, the system had not yet reset. The woman continued to be very rude, I asked if they would give me a re-test and she said they'd do one for "1/2 price." The owner was sitting across from me, and I looked him in the eyes and politely asked him to make an exception. He refused. I went back to Steve's, and Bernardo (the owner) looked at the paperwork and confirmed that it didn't pass because the battery was new. He explained that he always checks cars before running the smog test, in case of this issue. He said that he wouldn't have charged me, furthermore, he would re-test at no charge. After being treated so poorly at Four Corners, I decided not to go back and take their abuse. I ended up going to BNC in Santa Rosa. They accept coupons, so it cost only about $40. The manager, Jeremy, was the most polite and kind person I've had the pleasure of of working with in a long time. My car passed in 10 minutes. SO, if you need a smog test at a Star station, I recommend you drive 1/2 hour from Sonoma to BNC on Calistoga Road! read more

Don't waste your time here! It's probably my fault for going back again after being unhappy with their previous diagnosis on a different issue, but I like to give local business's another chance. I dropped off my 1987 Chevy pickup truck for a smog and the head mechanic and the owner both told me they wouldn't even attempt to do the smog because of the amount of smoke that was coming out of the tailpipe (which only happens if its been idling too long or first thing in the morning). They then told me it would be $1200 to get a valve seal job. I then talked to a salesman at Napa Auto Parts, and another mechanic, and they both told me that smoke out of the tailpipe has no bearing on whether a truck will pass smog or not. They said to get an oil change if its been a while (which it had), and try again. Steve's Smog and Auto Repair changed the oil and did the test, and it passed with flying colors (way under the maximum). Always get a 2nd opinion! read more

I drive up and there is not a soul to be found. I walk around and find a guy sitting in a chair hidden by a bunch of equipment. He had to have seen me drive up, but despite my calling out a couple of times, did nothing. When I finally saw him and asked him if he could do a smog check for me, you'd have thought I had asked for a kidney. He reluctantly took my registration info. After looking at it, he noticeably brightened up, only to inform me that he could NOT help me because their "dynamometer" was not working. Didn't suggest I come back, let me know when it would be fixed, or direct me elsewhere. Just handed the paperwork back to me and sat down. As bad as it gets. The smog check folks on 8th Street or at the 76 station at Broadway & MacArthur are great alternatives. They actually act like they want your business. read more

If you need a smog and know you'll pass just need to get the stupid thing for registration, come to this place. Called ahead but said smogs are walk-ins, so I dialed in when would be good to go and not go (e.g. lunch hour was noon to 1, so plan enough time to wait and have smog before then). Old school laid back shop. If you want shiny squeaky uptight customer service, go somewhere else and pay more. I pulled up, made eye contact with someone and asked for a smog. Waited around and it took about a half hour maybe less for the whole transaction and paperwork etc. Broadway Market is across the street so it was easy to stop there after the smog and grab a bite. read more

I came to this shop two times for a smog. The first time everything went good, the second time it didn't. The second time I got there and noticed I left my paperwork at home. I asked the guy if he could still do the smog without the paperwork. He said he could but it was going to take a while because they were about to take lunch. He said one hour of wait time. After waiting almost two hours he began doing the smog. He was giving me attitude about my car and about how next time I should have my paperwork ready. Everything bothered him, I told him that's the reason I asked him in the first place. My car didn't get tested because the front wheels were moving sideways on the rollers. The guy backed up the car and almost launched it backwards. After that I started driving my car back home and I noticed there was a different feeling in my clutch. The clutch felt like if it was vibrating when I stepped on it. I think he damaged my clutch a little. I took it to a different shop the same day and it passed right away. read more
