Such a weird experience: The "coffee service" is on a fancy sterling silver tray with a 2 oz side of water in whats in essence a large shotglass. Seems like an over-the top affectation. Their sticht is a space with a kid play area so the parents can meet other parents while the kids play amongst themselves. The coffee was fine (better than the chains) I would've given 3 stars but felt the need to do my part to bring down the score because it doesnt deserve 4.5 stars. You wake up and realize you have tons of chores including going to San Rafael (from San Francisco). You drive, not particularly excited about the trip. While taking care of chores you give yourself a break and wonder around, thinking maybe there's a Starbucks here (as a desperate measure). You come across this very lovely looking place from the outside. You think, should be better than Starbucks. Not caring about rest of your day, you step in. You thank yourself for your curious spirit. Simply because you are in one of the best coffee shops you've been in Bay Area. You order a pour-over, mesmerized by the decor you sit down. Music relaxes you. You are feeling 10x happier. While waiting for your coffee, you look at Yelp and surprized that it's not 5 stars with 7k+ reviews. Yet. Your pour over comes. It's un-believe-able. So my friend's 4yo loved this place, my 1yo not as much. They do have a smallish area for little kiddos to crawl around (maybe 5x7?), but when we were there it was just a place for parents to hang out. We paid to have our baby go in and he kind of sat on the side and watched, but he tired of the area quickly since he wasn't able to interact. The 4yo loved running around- there are tunnels and costumes, and a reading nook, and blocks to move, a rock climbing wall- he went nuts in there! The cafe space and bathrooms are generally clean. My chai was OK and they have special tumblers if you want to take it to the play room. One of the other moms took it upon herself to move my daiper bag on the couch while I was in the bathroom, thus spilling milk all over it so she could sit there. When I discovered the mess she just looked up, no apology, and kept talking to her friends. So those are the kind of parents who come here. read more

This is a super cute place! Gorgeous design and very unlike other coffee shops I've been to. Love the colors and seating. I've been here four times--the first two times I ordered a cappuccino and pastry and I really enjoyed it--love the tray service! The third time I ordered an iced coffee to go. Today, however I ordered a cold brew and it was absolutely terrible. I had to throw it away..and that really bummed me out. I have read other reviews mentioning the coffee isn't up to par, and I think this area of the cafe needs more attention. The other aspect of this cafe is the playground which I think is an excellent idea for parents to be able to relax while their kids play. I must say though, I think this cafe was mainly planned as a place for families (not for professionals without kids in their thirties like me) and it definitely caters to that crowd. Today, kids were running around and one even tried to cut in front of me while I was ordering. Fair enough--this seems to be what the owners intended. We took our daughter there for the first time and she loved it! The owner was super nice and accommodating, we didn't realize it was reservations only at the moment but since it was available he allowed us to book it for a short while so they have a chance to sanitize the place before the next booking. He also mentioned that he and his wife designed every nook in the play area, and it showed - everything feels so thoughtful. EDITED to address Devin's comment below: I almost did not write this review because i KNEW you would comment. You have on almost all other reviews. Please do not try to guilt me. These are my observations. I never said i had a terrible time. Do not misconstrue my words. Lovely space, great concept, and Baz had a blast. So why only three stars? First off, I'm not sure why they even have play-area attendants. They seem completely disengaged. There are also what I see as safety hazards, primarily unpadded wooden banisters next to the rolling hill. Baz twice got his legs stuck in there and it could have been an issue if I hadn't been there to help. After seeing how little the attendants did to watch the kids, I wouldn't feel comfortable just leaving him. Finally, there was a stupid attempt to nickel-and-dine me on the socks. They were supposedly out of women's socks, which are $2, so they tried to charge me $1 more for men's socks. Uh, no. That's just lame. Props for Temple Coffee and a pretty space. However, being new, I don't think Fox & Kit has worked out the kinks. read more

As a mom of an almost four year old, I was super excited to hear about the opening of Fox & Kit. As a former retail general manager, I must say that I was over the moon with the décor. It is trendy, casual and on point for the vibe of a cool coffee shop which also happens to have a great play area. I'm not talking about a plastic play kitchen and some blocks like you mind find at your local pizza joint, I'm thinking Bay Area Discovery Museum meets Restoration Hardware/Pottery Barn Kids. Quality items, AstroTurf grass hill with a great underneath play area as well as a wooden treehouse and play area. The owners really put thought into providing a safe, clean and unique play area. My son thoroughly enjoyed playing dress up with the costumes. They do have an employee on site in the play area to help keep kiddos safe and keep the area running smoothly. They are not a babysitter so a friendly reminder to parents to be available to parent your child when needed. ;) They offer Temple Coffee out of Sacramento, which is a killer coffee bean. However, was disappointed with the lack of food options. How can you expect to have children playing for two and a half hours and not offer some basic food fair. Sandwiches and/or paninis seem like a no brainer. Should also have some kid friendly food, yogurt, string cheese, fruit, veggie sticks, quiche. Was definitely missing the food element. Only had muffins and croissants. Not only did my kiddo leave hungry, my tummy was grumbling too. Even empanadas, toast and or breakfast sandwiches would up their game. Was a little disappointed with their pricing. $15 for one child and only a 15% discount for the sibling discount seemed a little on the steep side. When you think you could pay that amount for a full day at the discovery museum, it is hard to convince me that the pricing is on point. Maybe even if they offered a discount when purchasing food and drink. Ie spend $10 on food and get $5 off child entry. Or $12 for one child and $20 for two seems more on trend. I paid $27 for two children to pay 2 and a half hours. Once you add my $10 plus tip on beverages, I paid over $40 for two hours of café time. Thinking that at that point my money could have been better spent. The young girl working the coffee bar seemed disinterested in providing any service beyond bar help. For example she delivered the coffee to the man who purchased before me, but when my table was literally next to the coffee bar she yelled that my drink was ready for pickup. An odd variance in beverage service. Not a big deal, but for the $2 tip I felt like she could have carried mine over as well. That being said, the young girl working in the play area was fabulous. She was super friendly and went out of her way to make my son feel welcomed. When it was time to go, she even helped me coax him out of the play area. Much appreciated! Must note that the bathroom was decorated beautifully. Was super appreciative of the changing table and wipes provided. I think we need a lot more places like this. I'm a new mom so the fact that it was kid friendly made me feel comfortable being out with my baby. The changing table with a diaper genie in the bathroom was HUGE plus. Not to mention my friend's little one had a huge play area to play in while we enjoyed our coffee. Love! Love! Love! The peanut (2yrs) and I got there early and enjoyed a cup of coffee, chocolate milk, and pastries. The cafe atmosphere was beautiful and clean and it was just fancy enough to feel like a special treat to be there but I wasn't worried about my peanut making a mess. The pastries and coffees were delicious. The play area is large and clean and super fun. The peanut was ecstatic and spent the first half hour running from area to area exploring. We were there for almost two hours when peanut turned to me and asked to go home and nap (a minor miracle). Every detail is thought out. Even the bathroom gets it right: there's a mini potty seat, extra diapers and wipes, and diaper cream. Overall, it was a great experience and my only advice is to go early so that you can enjoy the space before it's crammed with people. read more

This place is very poorly managed. When we got here for the first time my toddler fell asleep in the car. I went inside to a very busy cafe area and ordered coffee to bring back to the car for myself and my wife. I spoke to the staff when I was ordering about how I'd be bringing my son inside in 30-60 minutes or so when he wakes up and they told me all about the admissions process and the fee but didn't mention anything about a waitlist. When we got in an hour later with my son after he woke up they made us start on a 30 minute waitlist- that they didn't mention when I arrived. I would have put us on the list if they had mentioned it when I was telling them an hours ago that I was here with my toddler and wife. We drove 30 minutes to get to this place, and I'm fine with waiting if the place is busy but I loath having my time wasted like this. read more

I desperately want to leave a 5-Star review for this place. The design for a modern and beautiful toddler-friendly space both in the café and in the play area is thoughtful and truly unique. My daughter (23 months old) loved her entire experience there. Childcare staff were friendly and helpful without being overly intrusive. The pastries were delicious and my daughter's tisane was perfect. But, just a warning, tea drinkers, the sencha was truly awful. It tasted dull, flat, and bitter all at the same time. I've had better tea at cheap ramen and udon restaurants in Japantown. My guess is that it was brewed too quickly with too-hot water? Next time I will try a more forgiving tea like the Earl Gray. It's pretty hard to mess up English tea! read more

First of all - they pull the best espresso in this area, judging from my two lattes. Quality grounds, good (high end) equipment used. As a cafe, the place stands on its own and is a welcome (and unique) addition to San Rafael. Pasteries are solid as well. The "Play Haus" is worth the price of admission. I was able to come in and do my work, while I turned my daughter over to a super-friendly (and engaged) attendant/employee that oversaw the room of 4-5 kids playing. She was in there playing and interacting so well with the kids that it left me at ease while I did my work. This is a good thing, and any qualm I had about the admission was immediately gone. Ha. Came to eat brunch in downtown San Rafael and decided to walk it off with the family around the area. Stopped into Fox & Kit for a coffee after a few blocks. We walked into a beautiful, cozy space with a several families in the enclosed play area and in the common area. I ordered two medium roast Ethiopian pour-overs from a polite young woman. She told me there was only one size, though there were two sizes on the menu at the counter, so I said that was fine--$12.00 total. She said I could pick them up at the other counter. The woman met me on the other counter and said the coffees would take 6 minutes and I thanked her for letting me know. My two and five year old kids went into the play area. I went in there after I was told my coffee would be a few more minutes and saw a big wall of cubbies for shoes. My kids already had their shoes in cubbies and had just started climbing around in there. I went to start taking off my shoes so I could stay in there with them. A gentleman approached me and asked if I'd already paid. I said, "oh, you have to pay to be in here?" and he said, "yeah." I said, "oh, I'm just waiting for my coffee--she said it'd be a few minutes." He asked how old the kids were, so I told him two and five and he pulled out a little iPad and started scrolling through and asked, "the latte?" And I said, "no, the two pour overs." He said, "okay, yeah, you didn't pay at the counter....that'll be $25.05." I told him, "oh no, we're not going to stay and play, I'm just waiting for my coffee. We're just waiting until they're done." To which he replied, "okay, I'll go get them." I could see them and called them over, and he walked over to them to tell them. I asked him if they charge by the hour and he said, "no, it's just all-day; people usually spend about 2.5 hours here." I said, "okay, we'll wait out there." I got my kiddos' shoes back on and sat and waited for the coffees. A few minutes later, the first coffee came out and it was nice an full, almost to the lip of the cup--enough room for cream. I put the to-go lid on, thanked the young man who served me and waited for the next coffee to come out. He said the other one was still being made. So we waited a few more minutes and I went to the counter to check again and the same young man went to check on it. Another male barista came over to pour the coffee and it was significantly and noticeably less of a pour than the first. I asked the barista why this pour was so much less than the first one he poured. The other barista was taking an order so he kind of ignored the question. In the meantime, he went to look to see if there was more coffee in one of the other prep containers on the counters or in the back. He came back to me and waited for barista #2 to finish with the customer. He finally looked back and said, "it was my first time making a pour over, I guess I failed," and shrugged and went back to helping another customer. I said, "you didn't fail, there was just so much less in this pour". Barista #2 threw barista #1 under the bus by saying, "well, he gave me so much coffee and a little water." The first barista said, "I can make you another one." I was so over the general vibe of half of the staff of the place and the almost 10 minutes to make two coffees, with such inconsistency, I politely declined and instead opted to let my kids run back to the car and post about my experience instead. My partner brought up a good point: there was no posted pricing of the play area at the counter or even on the window, just a side note. If I lived in the neighborhood and it was too hot or too cold to go out to play and I could find parking, I might be willing to pay the $12~ for my kids to play in pretty small enclosed play space. However, it did not look like there were age or kid size limits in the play space, either, because there were some at least 8-9 year olds in the play space. The coffee was good, but not for the wait, the inconsistency and the price to have your kids play for a few minutes while you wait for it to be made if you have little ones. I'll happily take my business elsewhere. Hopefully the owners read this an take some notes about improving the basic operation of the store. read more

I loved the chai latte... seems to be made in house and has a lil kick to it! Alternative dairy options available: coconut, almond, oat, and soy mylk. The staff are friendly and service is quick. They even warm up your pastry. I enjoyed a chocolate croissant. The children's play area is super cute and a great idea if you have lil ones.
