I wish I could rate lower. There is no warning online when you PAY IN ADVANCE for your rental car that you will need to present a credit card or they will not rent you the car. We waited in a line for 30 minutes only to be told that we couldn't leave because my husband made the reservation but the only credit card we had was in my name. We asked to transfer the reservation he said we can't do that. We asked if we could we make a new reservation, he said "we probably won't have any rentals available." As if the car we had already reserved disappeared. We were forced to go to a rental service next to them, and the employees were significantly nicer and more accommodating. Horrible experience. Our reservation was for $309.82 but when the bill came it magically went up to $513.97. What can we do but pay the bill before our flight leaves the airport! Never again will we use Fox Rent a Car. Dishonest and disreputable! Everything you have read about this place upselling and misrepresenting their contracts is true. If I could give these guys a negative star review I would. We rented a car up in San Francisco for a weekend. Upon checking in came all the upsells you could imagine. Insurance you don't need, overpriced prepaid tolls and "cheaper gas" if you use them when you return the vehicle. Well we fell for the last one out of convenience. They ended up charging us for a full tank of gas when we only used half a tank. No other company does this. Typically, they estimate how much you used (usually a low estimate). Their policy is inherently misleading. At the desk, they just say it's cheaper not that they will charge you for a whole tank no matter how much you use. I called customer service and they are what you would expect from a company like this. I think I talked to a high school student who told me this is how we charge and there is no else I could talk to. I gave her a order number and supposedly someone will call me back after told her I'm not getting off the phone util this is resolved. I'm not expecting a call back. It's a cheap car rental place...I don't know what other Yelpers expected. I booked my rental online and paid on the website, so I didn't worry about any additional charges. Their prepaid toll box thing is ridiculously expensive (but it's even more expensive if you run a toll without it). I didn't use a single tollway while in Austin, so do your research before renting the car. I had to wait for a car (15 minutes), so I get the feeling they don't keep a lot of cars in stock. They washed the outside of the car, but definitely didn't wash the inside. It was kind of gross (obvious spilled drink from a past customer), but you get what you pay for? Poor customer service, from the two woman who were working on Saturday afternoon February 13th. The girl who handles the payment/reservation was not considerate or in a good mood at all. Didn't offer any help in terms of knowing what car to get while on the icy roads. Was not friendly and did not act professional. She was even on her phone while I was going through the credit card transaction. The second girl who handled the process of giving me the car keys was also rude and disingenuine. I arrived on time for my pickup but she had me wait 45 minutes in the 32 degree cold weather before having the car ready for me. I asked both of these girls what kind of car i would be getting, they both said and I quote, "I have no idea.". Great, that's helpful, if I worked there is at least say what was available and what style I was getting. I ended up getting a different car than the one I ordered online (I ordered a Jeep online), but since it was taking so long in the cold I just took what they gave me. Since the roads were icy I ended up not driving the car very much, so it kind of ruined the trip. There was a man who I believe was deaf who was the only person I saw being helpful, so good on him. Glad he was able to point to where the car and the exit was. Again the two woman were acting like they had just previously experienced rude customers come in before me and so to justify their mood they took it out on me. Pretty lame. Chose this car rental service because spouse could be added for free. We show up to get the car, and since my address is a new address on my license and doesn't match my wife's address, they won't add me on. We flew here with our 2 kids... have the same last name... pretty apparent we are married. Rings on our fingers... Won't add me without charging. I should have known from the shuttle ride that this company is not the typical, above board company. The shuttle was unsafe as it only had 2 seat belts that I buckled my kids into and I held on for dear life hoping we didn't crash as we were on a main highway to get from airport. The experience inside Fox Rental wasn't bad but this company had us waiting for a least an hr before we got our rental. The vehicle was decent and what was asked for. The tire on the car kept losing air and we were driving in the mountains and on long highways. Constantly stopping to fill up tires. Ridiculous.. We returned the car as is as they as we were not going to be out $$ on account of them. I'm sure this is how they run their company. I've read other reviews that read EXACTLY the same. We arrived late, because our flight was delayed. The attendant wasn't very friendly. She was alone, and the couple ahead of us had many many questions. She never once told us, Hi or I will be right with you. Then she tells us that they gave our reserved car away because we were late checking in. They only hold the car for 2 hours. We told her the flight was delayed and we had no control over it. She said we aren't with the airlines (so basically not my problem). Yet, you are stationed in the airport. Its late, we are tired and she says all we have are more expensive vehicles (of course). We have no choice but rent the car, It would of been nice to get some consideration to the delay of the plane. Reserved a Yaris online. Offered a Mitsubishi Mirage upon arrival. Mitsubishi Mirage has no AC. Fox has no location in city I travel to. Firestone is unable to repair AC. Trip is very uncomfortable. Manager at location refuses to reach out to me after multiple calls to customer service and roadside assistance requesting a callback. Customer service refuses to give me a refund but gives me a rental credit, which I figure could be a fun way to check out another car and maybe take a day trip with my girlfriend. Reserve a Jeep. Offered a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. Mitsubishi apparently only makes trash vehicles, as this is possibly the most dreadful vehicle I've ever driven in my life. Fox is cheap, and therefore has its place, but if they were not offering budget pricing, this review would be 2-star. Also, they were willing to let me swap the miserable Outlander out for a Ford Fusion Hybrid. Honestly, I had a great experience with Fox. I'm really not sure how everyone else's experience was so bad. I booked a car for three days online through a third party company, and I read the email that I received afterwards, which specifically tells you that you need to present a credit card and a valid driver's license. I arrived a couple of minutes early, but the woman at the front desk helped me right away since there was no one in line. The service was professional and was not rude by any means, although I saw that the people in front of me were asking some questions to the same woman and she did sound slightly annoyed, but not to a huge extent. The whole process went smoothly, and I got my car and was on my way. They even had a 59 minute grace period for the return, which I was slightly late on. There are some random fees that pop up on the receipt right at checkout seem like slightly a scam, they're not that much, and not a deal-breaker by any means. That's the only reason I'd give 4 stars. Anyways below is the story... I went with a few friends to Austin. We rented our car with fox car rental because it was cheap ( that's why it got one star). When we got there the employee, Hayden, asked if I was the only one driving. I said yeah. He then told me that there were (hidden) CAMERAS in the Car and if someone else drove I'll get fined. I had originally reserved a rental for three days but did not pre-pay as I was not sure if I would need the vehicle all three days just yet. The day of pick up I checked in and made the check-in staff Rebecca know that I no longer needed the reservation for three days but only two. She looked at me in my eye (annoyed I could tell) and said "when you are done just bring it back and we will only charge you for the days you had the rental" I trusted her and continued to pay for my reservation. The following day I received the contract that I signed at check in and in BOLD letter as a disclaimer at the very bottom it read " If you are done with your rental early you will not be refunded and will be charged for all days reserved. I was so furious that I called their customer service number. When I explained what happened to the lady on the phone she was sympathetic and explained that they are in the Philippines and that I should go in person and ask to speak with Rebecca's super visor to find out why she lied and did not change the reservation. I never went in as I was too busy to return. I know better and will never give them my business again. I will be sure to let everyone know about my horrible experience with Fox rentals. I reserved and paid for my rental car in advance for my upcoming trip to Austin Texas. However, when I went to pick up the car I reserved, I was told they ran out of vehicles and that my rental was given to another customer (even though I paid for it in advance). It was at this point I chose to start recording my conversation, and turned on voice memo to record the Remainder of my conversation with the guy behind the counter who's name tag read "Russell". It was 12 AM and I was without a car. It was at this point I asked Russell what he expected me to do? And he responded by saying they would reimburse me for an Uber and for me to come back the following day. He even agreed to put it in writing and handed me the hand written note with his signature indicating that they ran out of vehicles and would pay for my Uber. If paying $102 for my Uber wasn't irritating enough when I return the following day, I spoke to the manager who said her name was Ms. Zavalija. I showed her Russell's hand written note and she let me know that because of the hassle she was not going to charge me and seemed very apologetic. However when I returned the vehicle Ms. Zavalija acted like she had no idea what I was talking about and billed me for the FULL AMOUNT for the rental, including the day that it was given to another customer. This is ludicrous and a nightmare experience for me.. I now have to dispute the charges on my credit card statement and I guess luckily for my sake I have the recording of Russell and have his hand written note to back up my claim. Listen this company and their employees do not have any integrity. The hassle is not worth the $15 a day savings you may get by choosing Fox over another rental car company. Rented car in Austin for business trip. It was small economy car. New but pretty beat up and didn't run well. Gentlemen that checked me in at beginning was very helpful and polite. He was very good at his job. The reason I'm writing this review is that when I returned car there was nobody in their rental booth when I returned the car. They never told me at the beginning I would have to drop off keys in a return box. This was a problem for me since nobody was in the return booth. I went to the front desk of fox rentals at 6am (which says they open at 6am) and no one was attending the front desk either. I needed to settle done toll road usage (Fox customer service told me I could do this at the return front desk) but again no one was at the customer service desk during the hours stated they would be there. This place is a scam. They will charge a $15 administrative fee per toll you go through or charge you $18 a day for the toll. My bill? $67.03 with $7.03 of that being for tolls. No mention of that charge while I was renting the car, and I was told by the representative that I'd be going through 4 tolls. He let me know I didn't need it. There is also no way for me to pay the tolls, so they automatically get that $15 per toll. What a scam. read more

Save save your money you think you're paying $13-$15 a day but they add all taxes and fees that amount to about $20 less than your cost. The car broke down and I said I thought it may be the battery they're coming out to jumpstart it, but if that's not what's wrong, they are going to charge me to tow the car back into the place and it's all their fault. It's their car and I'm stuck. They want to charge me to tow it back in. I will certainly dispute that charge. Be careful they're tricky and poor service.....+ their roadside service really stinks. Horrible customer service! I reserved a car early with a cancellation allowed. When I called to cancel, they told me that customer service was not in and I would have to call back. The same car the day before I got there was less than half the price of the car I had reserved, I reserved a second car at the new rate having tried to cancel the other one and I got a confirmation. When I got to the counter, they said that the lower rate had been canceled because it was a duplicate reservation and forced me to pay the higher rate of the earlier reservation to add insult to injury. They have you sign on blank electronic signature pad which you have no idea what they have checked or unchecked. SURPRISE CHARGES AFTER YOU return the car. Be prepare to stay on-hold for 45 minutes or more to FOX RENTAL BILLING DEPARTMENT, in which there will be no resolution by their own policies to SCREW you. You will notice they reply to every review with "Sorry for your experience....." But the negative reviews with the same compliments still happen...... I see a case action lawsuit in their future. I would stay away from these guys, the passenger amount and luggage quantity is not correct. I went back to change vehicles and drove it to where we were staying to wake up to a flat tire. I called roadside assistance to only be able to leave a message and didn't get a call back. So I took the car to a local tire shop to get it fix and ended up having to replace the tire. Fox refused to cover the cost of the new tire or the lost rental day. They're customer service is the worst I have ever dealt with in my life. Fox said this is a non-refundable rental and are refusing to give me a refund or credit voucher. Not even close to being comparable to other car rental services I've tried. Not horrible, if you're looking to save a couple of bucks, but my experience with Fox Rent a Car made me decide to go with other vendors in the future. First off - they don't have anyone sitting downstairs in the air conditioned building where all the other vendors are. You have to go upstairs to the kiosk in the hot/stuffy garage to go through your rental paperwork. The paperwork process itself seemed to take a lot longer than how other vendors do it. When I got the keys to my car and opened up the trunk, the first thing I noticed was the blast of moldy bread smell that overwhelmed my senses. Then I saw that there were a bunch of stains all over the car. There seemed to be a patch of dried mud on the floor of the driver side of the car. Lastly, there was a "maintenance required" light that was on when I started up the car. When I pointed this out to the staff and asked if I should get a different car, they said it was fine and to use the one I was given and just made a note to not charge me for it. Not being charged is one thing, but my safety is a different thing. Luckily, I didn't have any trouble with the car for the two days I had it. However, that nasty smell did not go away, so I had to resort to driving with all the windows rolled down and breathing through my mouth only. There was a small sign informing us to go to the second floor of the car garage (hot and stuffy compared to the rental office). When we arrived, the woman working there told us that since we didn't pre-pay they ran out of cars... They know how to take a reservation, but they don't know how to hold the reservation. Fox car rental is not a deal. You will never reach a person. We rented a car for transportation while repair work was being done. The first car had a strong pull to the left that made it difficult to drive safely. We returned it, but it was considered an early return and we were penalized two day's worth of a rental. We had to extend the rental by a day, due to repair delays, and could never get ahold of a person. We had to drive out to the Austin airport (nightmare) and try to extend it, or rent another car. The rates for the extension, in addition to the early return penalty, outpaced the rates had we just rented from another car rental company. read more

I waited half an hour in 100 degree temperature in line for a car in the parking lot. Then after having my credit card charged, the representative went to get me a car and left me standing for another 15 minutes. I had to sign papers indicating the damage without seeing the car first.My Toyota Camry was clean inside but I noticed the maintenance light was on and the key battery don't work. First of all, I've had bad experiences with Fox but since the cost difference was so significant for Austin,TX..I thought I would give them another try..BIG MISTAKE! DO NOT USE FOX THEY ARE THE WORSE!! #1-my credit card that I used to reserve the car was stolen so I had to use another card-it took them more than 30 minutes to tell me that they would have to refund me since I didn't have that card and that they would need to cancel the complete transaction and charge me again with a different card (that was frustrating and we were getting very impatient). #2-it took us THREE times to get a decent rental. The first car- it was dented, rusted, and had caked on dirt in all the mud flaps which is completely unacceptable. I asked for a 2nd car, huge dent in the back and dirt all over the car seats. Third try-it was ok except the gas wasn't filled to full so I had to report this so we don't get charged extra-so Joselyn asked me to bring it back 1/2 full. The customer service was lacking and it took so long to get a decent vehicle from the beginning of the transaction-you would think they would upgrade you with no additional cost but no they wouldn't give us any type of discount or any customer service for the very bad unacceptable BAD SERVICE. These cars should NOT be on the lot for rentals in the first place! I have never seen cars in such bad shape as Fox. Believe me, we've rented from almost every car rental company out there too! Then, we get a toll bill that they slapped on $90 extra when the tolls were ONLY $19.00 but with their "admin charge" the total was almost $110!!!! We had no idea that there were so many tolls in Austin-They could do a better job in letting their customers know. There is a sticker on the car for tolls so what admin fees are there???? This is SO ridicoulous! Other car rentals companies DO NOT charge you an arm and a leg for tolls! THIS COMPANY IS OUT TO CHARGE YOU AND IF YOU DO NOT ASK QUESTIONS OR MAKE THEM ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE SERVICE YOU GET- THEY WILL SCREW YOU OVER. It's about making money for them, not treating their customers fairly or care in the world. Fox has lost my business forever and I will tell everyone not to use them!! read more

If the goal were to make an art of bad service this place would have fourteen stars. It was as if the two spectacularly disinterested employees were going out of their way to make us feel like a burden. Barely looking up to inform us they didn't have the car we reserved, and that it would cost extra to change the car we were "upgraded" to, they obviously cared as little as possible about us. It's cheap. It feels like it. They know it. The slogan should be "We Charge Less so we ... Screw it." Never again. I'd rather rent an irritable llama with IBS. read more

I definitely will recommend to rent with caution. When I asked about the toll pass I was told that it was included in the rental. I was surprised. My understanding was that I wouldn't have a fee. With that said, I did not set my GPS to avoid tolls. Included with rental to me would be the same as unlimited mileage. I not only did not receive my rental agreement but I didn't receive my invoice. I was following up on it after vacation and discovered I was charged for a toll pass. I called customer service, had a rude representative and when I asked to speak with a supervisor was put on hold only to speak again with the same rude representative. Just watch what they say and seriously, read all the little things they make you sign, no matter how long it takes because they aren't honest. read more

I have a current car reservation but was just told by someone (at the call center) that they were not honoring the Texas Governor's Executive Order to honor expired driver's licenses during the pandemic. This means that I have to forfeit my car rental or risk going to get a driver's license during the pandemic which includes taking my mask off for a picture. I am unable to renew online. They told me if I want to talk to a person at the location I have to actually go to their office. They are not making enough adaptations for these scary times. read more
