Honestly I don't like vegan ice cream, but this place has changed my opinion. I didn't realize this place was vegan until I got there. I was looking at the ice cream pints in the freezer and they all said vegan and gluten free on it. This place isn't very big, but there was a back room with seating. Decor was simple and straight to the point. My experience was very quick, which is what I would want at an ice cream shop. I wish I could see the flavors on display, but at least we were able to try them. It looked like the waffles are made in house and they were premade before we got there. For me, cookies and cream is my go-to. I originally wasn't going to get anything but I decided to try the Supercookies and Cream. I was very skeptical since it's vegan, but I was pleasantly surprised how good it was! It's definitely not the typical cookies and cream taste. It doesn't taste like Oreos. It wasn't too sweet but it was light and creamy. I would've never guessed it was vegan! I didn't try my friend's mint brownie, but she seemed to like it a lot. She and her husband killed it. My first time at the Ballard location. The inside was just as quaint with an easy and chill vibe. Customer service was great. The employee was very friendly and easily handled our party of five. We went to Frankie and Joes explicitly for the summer seasonal flavors. They were all delicious but coconut joy which is reminiscent of an almond joy candy bar and the pineapple sangria were my fave of the three. The blueberry lavender was bright and full of the flavors of blueberry and a finish on the lavender side. It's great to know that no matter what location we visit, we are going to get stellar service and ice cream. My husband is not able to eat dairy and it's lovely to be able to go a place where we all can enjoy ice cream. Frankie and Joes is even the kiddos favorite over some of the other local Seattle establishments. We stopped by here for an appetizer on our way to dinner next door. :-) I love this place! Nestled in a residential neighborhood, it has a nice quaint vibe/feel. The employees are friendly and more than happy to let you sample all you want, without pressure. All of their ice creams are vegan, and many are also nut-free. They craft all of their ice cream from scratch, using raw ingredients, and it really shows in the texture, feel, and taste of the end product. It lost its character and flavor in favor of creaminess. It's now just frozen fluff. It tastes like some kind of emulsifier and just isn't nearly as good. Outside of the poor customer service and limited seating, I did notice they seem to care about the environment--which I appreciated at first. However, I was surprised to see their ice cream stored in plastic buckets. If sustainability is truly a priority, switching to metal containers or another eco-friendly alternative would make more sense. We have been coming here for years and the ice cream is consistently good, even the new or seasonal flavors they introduce. I am gluten-free and dairy-free, and very picky on top of that so when Insee things like dates as an ingredient in the chocolate ice cream, my first instinct is to run. Thankfully, the first time I went there, I was with friends and felt peer pressure to be open-minded, because regardless of what ingredients it states are used, you cant taste them and the ice cream is really good. I would have been missing out this entire time! I love and really appreciate how generous they are in giving you as many samples as you need until you find what you like without making you feel guilty or like you are a burden or are wasting someone else's time. Thats how I found several that I love! My personal (and conservative) faves are chocolate, vanilla and mint choc chip. Everyone else goes for something more interesting and always is happy with it so you really cant go wrong! Service is good. They are happy to help. The people working were pretty nice. I got a mini scoop of the Jamocha fudge in a dark cocoa waffle cone. My partner got a standard scoop of the supercookies and cream in a regular waffle cone. The mini scoop was pretty big! I'd recommend starting small. We both really enjoyed our flavors. I will say the dark cocoa cone was to die for. The sign said they only make them once a year (I think..) so if they have them when you go I highly recommend getting one. So good! A little pricey, but overall a really solid spot. Our last stop of the evening was for some plant-based ice cream at Frankie & Jo's. They have two other location (Capital Hill and University Village). We dropped in on a busy Friday evening (around 8:30pm). It smelled heavenly inside with fresh waffle cones being made. Nice that you can sample a few flavours. They had 13 flavours available (10 everyday and 3 seasonal). Scoops are pricey; $5.00 USD (mini), $7.50 USD (standard) and $9.50 USD (large). Pints are $14.00 to $15.00 USD. Their maple vanilla waffle cone ($2.75 USD) are easily the most expensive cones we've come across. - Large ($9.50 USD) - for our two scoops, we opted for the love of lemon (lemon curd swirl with lemon shortbread cookie) and California cabin (smoked vanilla and pine with a black pepper cardamom shortbread cookie). The texture was rich and creamy. The California cabin was unique and refreshing; first time having pine and we loved it. The lemon was exactly as described; a lemon square in ice cream format. After much anticipation, I tried the Chaga hot fudge magic sundae ($12) thinking at this price point it would be at least double the size I received. It was in the smallest cup and the toppings were not what I'd imagine when I think of the word sundae. The soft serve like much of their ice creams didn't seem cold enough and overly very sweet. Went in and ordered a double scoop of, what sounded like really cool flavors (crazy flavors like salt and straw). Got my two scoops and they were ridiculously tiny. I would say they were no more than 1/4 a cup of product. They then rang me up and said 13.00. I about fainted. I was absolutely shocked as I did not see prices posted so I assumed it would be normal gourmet ice cream prices. The gal and guy working were not friendly and overall it was just a weird vibe. Welp...got in the car and tasted the ice cream and then figured it out...:it's vegan Icecream. I'm not vegan. It was pretty unappetizing. I love dates and wanted to try the date cookie sandwich; the date I've cream was extremely good the cookie was more savory 'Miso,' the combination oddly paired together really nicely. I've tried this place a couple of times and I'm just not a fan. I'm not vegan but I enjoy vegan things if they are still tasty! Today I had a split scoop of brown sugar vanilla and Carlota de Limon. The texture on each was very off in a different way. After one bite of each, I was ready to chuck the whole thing but since I paid $11 for ice cream, I finished it. The vanilla was very heavy and left a think greasy film in my mouth. The Limon was really gummy and seemed like it had a lot of stabilizers it was also really gritty. I was hoping the Limon would be refreshing and citrusy but instead it had a really bitter note. I love & support vegan businesses but after a couple of tries, this one is not for me. read more

As a non-vegan, I'm honestly kind of a hater of vegan substitutes after some very bad experiences so I was definitely very hesitant coming here. I am happy to report back that this is not only good vegan ice cream but also great for non-vegans! I ordered a mini strawberry milk ice cream in a waffle cone and it was delicious and refreshing! You could definitely tell that they don't use dairy cream/milk but the texture was still very smooth and creamy unlike other oat milk ice creams I've tried and it felt lighter than dairy ice cream which is great. I'm pretty picky about my ice cream texture and don't like it airy/fluffy, but this was pretty dense which I liked. The cone was also really yummy and you could really taste the maple/vanilla/oats. Overall I was pleasantly surprised to like this vegan icecream spot and it's in the number 1 spot for me of the 3 main Seattle chains (other two being Molly Moons and Salt & Straw). My little wanted cookies and cream and wouldn't share a bite! I tasted and brought home the Chocolate Tahini Sugar Cookie. Wow, it's rich and creamier than any dairy ice cream I've had. The Tahini added a little salt to balance the rich decadent Chocolate. Omg I'm glad they aren't too close to home. The price is well worth the value, but I'd need a second job to pay for this habit. I adore the ice cream and waffle cones here and love that I can have anything on the menu when it is all gluten free and vegan. Recently it was nice to get the delicious fresh made waffle cone as shattered pieces in a cup with a scoop instead of investing in a a full cone. I also took home their new-to-me ice cream sandwich, made with 2 chocolate chip cookies and oat milk-based vanilla ice cream (different from the brown sugar vanilla but similar), all partially coated in dipped chocolate. I tried a few bites before my ice-cream sandwich loving child ate all of the rest. Very rich and sugary and I'm not sure I could have eaten it in one go myself, but still really delicious. The first time I went I only noticed a couple of stools at a bar facing the ice cream counter instead of looking out over the street and a bench across the way and didn't think this location felt very welcoming nor well utilized for seating. However, on a return visit, I realized I had completely missed that down a hallway in the back is a cute little children's table and chairs plus play area with nearby adult benches, as well as a beautiful glass-enclosed outdoor cactus garden on a small patio as well. With the sun out on the return visit, there were also tables and chairs out front. The one lone employee was very sweet and helpful when I was the only customer in on a grey quiet day my first visit. There was also only one employee, just as nice, on my next visit and a long line out the door of customers waiting to get ice cream. read more

Perfect ice cream shop for those that are lactose intolerant... aka ME. Blessed to have not had a stomach ache after eating this lol. I got the banana chocolate one and although the consistency wasn't comparable to regular full fat milk ice cream, it was still good and definitely satisfied my ice cream craving! Their California Cabin is creamy with lots of yummy cookie bits and their golden milk has turmeric ginger flavor with small cookie chunks. Frankie & Joe's is a women-owned, certified b-corporation, plant based and gluten free. Yes, I said plant based & GF ice cream and it is a mouthgasmn. I have NEVER in my life been able to enjoy ice cream without having a stomachache (because I'm lactose intolerant), and couldn't order a cone because of the gluten. My sister was the one that took me to the Capitol Hill Scoop Shop almost two years ago (didn't have yelp yet-sorry) and honestly I can't eat ice cream anywhere else! My expectations of ice cream are so HIGH that I'm never satisfied when I try a Dairy Free/Vegan ice cream. Ooh every month F&J have Seasonal Flavors and they never disappoint! I will sadly admit that I was extremely dubious about Frankie & Jo's because I feel like as a non-vegan, when you get something vegan, you make a sacrifice in flavor and texture. However, after observing that they are a B corporation and are really invested in using the best ingredients and being transparent, I decided it was time to try. Their flavors are extremely creative and often have a twist, even their version of vanilla. I'm a huge fan of ice cream that also has a good amount of mix-ins, such as brownies or cookies, and Frankie and Jo's has plenty of classic and monthly flavors that do that. I tried their vanilla and the seasonal blondie flavor. The ice cream base itself is super creamy and didn't taste overly "coconut-y" as vegan ice cream often does (note I love coconut, so I don't mind actually if it did). I can't wait to come back and try the waffle cone. My only wish is that they had smaller scoop options, where you could either do a split scoop for the smallest size or have a "kids" size. With that said, perhaps it's a good thing how generous their scoops are? My last note for this location... I really like this location because it doesn't seem that busy compared to other locations. Granted I did go in the winter at ~6:30 PM on a Saturday night... However, other times I have been in the neighborhood during more "ice cream appropriate times", I haven't seen a long line. read more

Having their ice cream pints in some grocery stores in the area has been amazing since I live on the eastside. If you're looking for a Frankie & Jos fix but don't feel like driving to Seattle for it, head to your local PCC. I think Whole Foods has it now too.
