Tried Frankie & Jo's recently it was a pleasant surprise. We got the Berries & Fermented Cream and Caramel & Coconut Yogurt. The berries one was super fresh and slightly tangy, almost like a mix between ice cream and a really good frozen yogurt, but creamier. The caramel & coconut yogurt was my favorite though. It had this rich, smooth coconut base with a subtle caramel swirl that wasn't too heavy or sugary. The place itself is chill and the staff were patient while we tried and decided on the flavors. It is on the pricier side for ice cream, but for the quality and ingredients, it feels worth it. They have a three scoop flight served over broken waffle cones called a cone smash. I had a red, black, and white trio of Beet Strawberry Rose, Salty Caramel Ash, and California Cabin. The Calofornia Cabin is a vanilla and pine ice cream with black pepper cardamon shortbread cookies - holy smokes it was good! The other day I went out to dinner with people who aren't vegan, and one of them was like "I really want to go to frankie & jo's" and I was like "oh you don't have to do that for me bc I'm vegan" and they were like "no I have my heart set on frankie & jo's" So we went! And it was great, as always. Our scooper Gracie was hilarious and I agreed with them on all flavor opinions like, 1. Miso Moon should be a permanent year-round flavor and 2. The cardamom apple seasonal needed more apple flavor. I get a little frustrated that prices are so high these days (adding a split scoop fee grinds my gears) and you can actually sometimes get their pints for less money at Whole Foods around the corner than in the store (but a limited labor selection). I got a mini scoop and all together the item cost slightly more than $10, which seems typical for Seattle ice cream. The ice cream tasted great! We ordered the seasonal flight ($12) with strawberry milk, salty caramel ash, and their seasonal flavor Mexico morning. The salty caramel ash had big chunks of caramel, the Mexico morning was coffee-forward, and the strawberry milk was my favorite. On top of that, I really liked the waffle cone shatter on the bottom which added a nice texture to the flight. It's nice to be able to sample the flavors before committing to them. You really won't be able to tell that it's vegan because of how creamy it is, and you probably won't care because of how delicious it is. I visited in July and one of their monthly specials was a Strawberry Celebration Cake. It featured vanilla ice cream blended with strawberry cake and jam featuring local berries. I feared the worst, that this would be ridiculously sweet, but it was hard to pass up fresh and local strawberry jam. I was blown away by the ice cream. It wasn't overly sweet. It had a great balance of sweet, strawberry and vanilla flavors with a nice creamy texture. I opted to have this ice cream on a house made vanilla-maple waffle cone. The cone was pricey but so worth it. It was thicker than most waffle cones I've had. It felt more like an actual waffle and less like a cone. Frankie and Jo's is so good. Some of the best vegan ice cream I've had. Their emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and rotating small batch flavors are a plus. It isn't cheap. Seattle is really blessed with a lot of vegan ice cream places -- either completely vegan like Frankie & Jo's, or others like Molly Moon's and Salt & Straw that have vegan options. We came in here after dinner recently, and tried one of their seasonal flavors, potato chip caramel crunch. JUST SO GOOD. Love potato chip flavored ice cream, which apparently is a thing. However, there is one thing both my wife and I think about Frankie & Jo's ice cream (her more than me) -- in all of the flavors we've tried over the years, a prominent note that comes through is coconut. That is, every flavor should be preceded with "coconut," as you can't escape that flavor. F&J's base ice cream is made from coconut milk, which is fine; a lot of places do that. F&J, though, doesn't seem able to mask the coconut flavor, and so it is always apparent, which is not something you want. That is, for the potato chip flavored ice cream, you really don't want/need to taste coconut. This is somewhat of a minor nit, but something to be aware of. The ice cream is still top notch. Also, huge props for F&J's selling a super small size -- "mini." It's greatly appreciated. Their ice cream is rich, and to me at least, less is more. I don't want to eat so much that I'm going to get sick. I want a satiating amount that when I'm done I think "that was good ice cream; I could eat more, but don't need to." Service was good, and vibe is very Capitol Hill. The person behind the counter was super low key and if they didn't live in CH, should. Prices are insanely expensive, but that's Seattle, and further I assume/home that F&J is paying a living wage. We most recently visited in on a cold, windy, rainy June Friday evening, after dinner, and I was surprised by the number of people coming in for ice cream. The space is small. There are a few bar countertop-style places to sit. We've never come when it was hot and sunny, but I could imagine that the place fills up pretty quickly. Overall, I like F&J, and particularly as a vegan appreciate them. If they could rejigger their recipe so that it's not as coconut forward regardless of flavor, it would be best of the best.
