What I used to think of as the worst diner in America is a Michelin five star compared to this place. I had the smoked salmon eggs Benedict. With the first bite, I was disappointed.After several more bites, It was like chewing on old fish bait laid on a bed of cold seaweed over a English muffin soggy with the run off water from the bait fish. My Date's omelet also tasted like fish, but it wasn't supposed to be a fish omelet. The only positive comment I can make is the coffee wasn't the absolute worst I have ever had. All this, and for two breakfast meals w/coffee, it was only $40.00. I have anti nausea and anti diarrhea meds close at hand and am waiting for what I am almost certain to happen after this meal. Yelp comes thru yet again! We were looking for a breakfast spot in town away from the Hyatt because, we like the local joints. This place is the local joint, at least from what I gathered. It is a diner type place, small, a little shabby and it's a hole-in-the-wall, all the characteristics of a great local place. We walked in, were told to grab a seat anywhere which we did. The menu is pretty standard breakfast fare with some other unique things thrown in. The server was nice and friendly and got us coffee and water (in plastic cups which seems to be a weird trend in Newport). The coffee is diner coffee nothing more, nothing less. I ordered the blueberry stuffed french toast and a side of corned beef hash. The french toast was outstanding stuffed to the brim with blueberries and cream cheese. The toast itself was also excellent. My lovely bride got the crab cake Benedict and she loved it. The home fries have old bay type seasoning on them they were also excellent! This place definitely has the vibe that locals and tourists alike all come here and it's a bit of a hidden gem so-to-speak. If you're in town definitely check this place out. Both days we should up between 0900 and 1100 and didn't have any wait for a party of four. The breakfast was delicious! I had the maple pecan stuffed French toast... DELICIOUS!!! My boyfriend had the crab cake Benedict the first day. The crab cakes were yummy, just the right amount of seasoning and crab meat. The eggs were cooked just the way I like them- a step above runny. The second day he got the country Benedict the second. Also excellent! Both days we shared our breakfast choices because they were both amazing! There are a handful of tables and a bar counter, so I sat at the bar and ordered. The server offered a coffee while I waited (they have both hot and iced coffee), which was great. My order took 10ish minutes to complete and before I left with my order, the server offered to top off my iced coffee - even better! Franklin Spa definitely goes one step better than most diners when it comes to their menu selection. They've got plenty of choices on their standard menu with a full page of specials. I also appreciated the nautical theme to some of their selections (crab, lobster, etc). I went with the Ultimate Lobster Omelet (sans Hollandaise sauce) and also tasted the Country Inn Eggs Benedict (were sausage patties replace the Canadian bacon). My husband and I lived in Newport, RI for about 2 years and went to Franklin Spa every Sunday for brunch and as often as we could besides our work schedule. Rocky, Travis, Victoria and the girls were amazing. Rocky and his "Portuguese Sailor" always brought a smile to my face. Portuguese Sailors, Stuffed French Toast, Omelettes to die for, Milkshakes like non other... and the local Newport banter always made you feel at home. Whether it was just a cup of cuaffee or my weekly Portuguese Sailor, Rocky always delivered it with a smile and calling me sunshine. When I told him I was moving to San Diego, I tried to coerce him to expand to San Diego and maybe send Tory to run the joint and he responded, "Sunshine, I haven't left the island in over 15 years. I don't think you will ever get me to California. If you want your usual, always come back to see us." Unfortunately, when we went the tables were completely full with only two waitresses, who only interacted with us three times- to ask our drinks, to ask our food, and to hand us the check. She was friendly of course, but it just felt like they wanted people in and out. My bagel was delicious but the "home fries" are basically warm potatoes chopped up.
