Everyone saying this is a piece of NY, located in an odd part of San Diego. Pizza is good, only got to try a slice but i definitely want to come back and try all the appetizers. Welp here goes and I really hate to do this, I can honestly say this is by far my favorite place to eat pizza however the family of kid running the place has always annoyed me. We got to know Frank when the place first opened and he was ambitious and eager to build the business. It seems now he leaves the business to his wife's demise and the customer service is in the pooper. We went in and ordered a pizza package from a flyer we had. The package stated "4 large pizzas and juice boxes" it was a great deal and for a small family gathering we couldn't pass it up. The owners wife took our order and even read the order "4 large pizza's" out loud to us and we confirmed yes thats the one we want. We paid in advance and confirmed pick up time for the next day. When we arrived at Franks the following day for a pick up only to our surprise their large pizza seemed very small. I asked if these were larges and the owners wife popped off the phone for a second and said the ad said 12 inches. I said the ad said Large, she again came back with it also said 12 inches. Now Life happens and typos suck but I find it very interesting that this error was never mentioned the day prior, it also was not mentioned when we called 30 minutes prior to pick up to ensure the order would be ready. I feel if you say large in your ad then you should give your customer a large at the very least meet us half way with 2 large and 2 mediums. She did tell us they would make two larges and charge us for the cost of the additional pizzas. Sorry Franks we will not be returning to your place of business, and we will not encourage others to eat there also. Initially, I raved about Frank's Pizza Joint and when we had visitors from out of town, this was always our go-to. The service has gotten horrible and on numerous occasions while dining in, we've had to get up and ask for the check. We would sit there for a long time, totally unnoticed by staff. No one asked us for drink refills. The last time we ordered pizza to be picked up, not one employee was wearing a mask, as per CDC guidelines. That is a violation of the San Diego County health department. I pulled up to Frank's around 8:00pm after calling for 30 minutes to place an order to go, not only does it say they close at 9 online but also have a sign on the door as well. I thought it was super unprofessional and inconvenient , specially due to the fact the employee inside clearly saw me trying to open the door and saw me calling and didn't bother to answer the phone. We tried this nice little place close to home last night and we really liked it. We had a pizza which the whole family loved we got a large and we were fighting over the last pieces! It totally reminded us of pizza we had when we visited New York 2 summers ago! We had garlic bread and the jalapeño chips for appetizers and the kids loved the bread I didn't even get a slice! I was able to stop one of them before they demolished the end which is my favorite anyways so I did get a bite and it was pretty good! NOW for the jalapeño chips YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are served with ranch and good alone or on your pizza! Kids got unlimited soda refills and we had a few beers on happy hour. This place is the textbook definition of inconsistent. I really wish I could give Frank's a 5-star review because when it's good, it is just heavenly but when it's bad, it is godawful. Frank's does not know what they want to be. Sometimes it's a slam dunk, other times they don't just drop the ball, they set it on fire, hurl it off a cliff, and take everyone with them. It's a family owned business and because of that I'm inclined to be a bit softer on them. Perhaps if the Frank's workforce was not comprised of minors their service would be a bit better. While it's certainly not sweatshop-like child labor, it's still children working and the service reflects that. Don't go to Frank's looking for good service because it is literally a small litter of children working the floor. That said, the owner is nice, the few waitstaff who can legally operate motor vehicles are kind and efficient, and the pizza is generally amazing. Don't use the Google listing because the phone number is wrong. That error still surprises me considering the youth of today are technological savants. Maybe move the kids off the service floor and into IT where they belong. read more

We really need some good eats in the area. So I charged in and Wow!!!! Looks great. All went down hill from there. I ordered a pizza with easy sauce and got extra extra sauce. When I talked to the manger he apologized and said he would make us a new one. Well the new one never came. They forgot. They finally made me a new one and it was so greasy and undercooked it was a mess. Well I gave them a try, but they failed. Alright, here's the deal: I've been going to Frank's pizza joint since it opened. My first time going was when I was a 17 year old junior in high school about 5 years ago. The pizza is stellar- but I'd recommend buying full pizza not sliced. Sliced is good, it gets the job done and it's affordable. Full pizza? It's the bomb, made fresh with great sauce and a good proportion of cheese/sauce combo. Another good thing about this place is that while it specializes in pizza, it has a broad menu with good options. I've had a sub there and it was great, my buddy loves the vegan wrap, the hot wings there are actually my favorite thing on the menu and often times I'll swing by just for the wings. I'd be remiss in my review if I didn't mention the environment. On the outside, you see a little pizza parlor squashed between a toy store and a subway. On the inside you see a petite, New York style joint with cool posters and pictures on the side, elegant tables/brick walls, it's my favorite spot to grab some food for the environment alone. Extra plus for the days they play jazz music. They also have a big TV and a couple small ones for sporting events, great spot to catch a game. The only downside that I can say is that sometimes, but rarely, the service can be a little slow. Overall, my favorite joint to grab food at and would highly recommend it. read more

Good food, but horrible customer service. They made our order wrong and when we called back that same night, we were told they'd make it right by giving us a free pizza to replace it or a refund. We opted for the replacement (wish we'd just taken the refund). Called to order about a week later and they couldn't find any record of that despite the fact that they took my name and number. Then we were told they'd give us 10% off...what a joke, then 50% and finally a free 16 inch pizza even though we ordered a 20 inch that was made wrong. Woman was argumentative, hostile and rude. Terrible policy, rude workers, inconsistent info given to customers and often times our other orders were wrong before this but we just let it go. When we first walked in the place was super dark, and it was super hot inside of the store too. The waitress seems not happy, but she was ok. We ordered a philly cheese steak and calzone. We first got the philly and it wasn't that good a all. It was really bland, it had very light amount of cheese, and not a lot of pepper. After that we got the calzone, and it was pretty good. We had heard about Frank's pizza joint and seen it for about a year, but this is the first time we ate there. The decor and atmosphere was "New York" and very friendly. On a Friday night at 5:30 PM, it was not crowded at all. We sat down and picked up a menu. Even though there was a counter where it appeared you ordered, the server came to our table and immediately took our drink order. By immediately, I mean within two minutes. That was the first thing that raised my eyebrow: Great service. And the kid's name was Keanu. Epic. His partner delivered free samples of the clam chowder for us to try as we browsed the menu. Eyebrow #2. I ordered a Capacolla hoagie, a dinner salad with chicken and a small cheese pizza for the kids. The cold items all came out within 7 minutes. The pizza took longer, but being as excellent as it was, that was more than reasonable. The small salad was huge for the price (approx. $6) and fed all four of my family. It included fresh, sliced grilled chicken, mozzarella shredded cheese, shaved carrots and sliced sweet tomatoes. The best part of the salad was the squaw bread croutons! I spitefully glared at my 8-year old daughter as she swiped crouton after crouton from my plate. Of course, I played the "crouton terrorist" to my parents for 19 years, so my mother's prophecy of "I hope your kids do to you what you put us through" nominally came true this day. Frank's also had a small or large Iceberg Wedge salad that I watched our neighbors at the table next door devour. They got the large. It was Brian-sized (code: GINORMOUS). I actually put in a calendar reminder to come in & eat it next week. Eyebrow #3. The Capacolla sandwich was tasty, just what I remembered of the delicious Italian hot ham from my childhood days of lore devouring the spicy meat at Guliano's Italian deli in Buena Park, CA. Epic. My last name might be Irish, but from my mother's side came my fiery temper born of my Lorusso, Di Salvo, Falcone and Mancuso ancestors. The purpose of this Brian Genealogy lesson: I f'n know Italian food. That being said, I hope I spelled "Capacolla" correctly because apparently Italians didn't contribute to the iOS autocorrect dictionary. The pizza was delicious. Thin crust, sweet marinara and savory mozzarella in a marriage of dough and heat. (It's 11:45PM. Gimme a break. I'm stretching for flowery prose...) Drinks were promptly refilled when they came empty. The staff was friendly and very talkative. When someone walked through the door, they greeted them with familiarity and seemed to know each customer. Now THAT, FELLOW EATERS, is the hallmark of a neighborhood pizza joint! My jaw dropping open at the cash register was only partially because of Julianna, the tall, beautiful blonde with the yellow nail polish. The bill for four of us was just $21. That was the most epic thing of the night. The one-$ rating on Yelp! is actually true this time. My kids and I got lunch in the McDonald's drive through today for more than this meal cost us. There are specials posted in Frank's for combo meals of a hoagie or spaghetti/meatballs WITH A DRINK for $7 approx. Staff indicated that the specials were for lunch OR dinner. Sorry, Mickey D's. I can actually see Frank's from your drive through. Too bad Frank's doesn't have mocha Frappe coffees. Then I could truly give up the Golden Arches forever! (NOTE: iOS automatically autocorrect capitalized Golden Arches...Apple, you sell outs!!! LOL) Next time, I'm gong to get pasta. For $6 approx, a bowl of rotini and gravy with a beer from the tap. Came in for a slice and ended up getting a combo with Greek salad and supreme pizza slice. They served the salad first, which i thought was a nice touch, and i don't usually get excited about salad but it was a BOMB salad. Then the slice came out. It's a huge slice, quite beautiful with every color of bell pepper, and damn delicious. Great service, great food, this place rules and I am completely puzzled why they don't have at least 4.5 stars. We came in at a bit before 3:00...not a prime meal time, but two tables at this small place had customers quietly, and apparently happily, enjoying their food. The twins running the front of the house were immediately attentive and friendly as they took our "to go" order. The place was sparkling clean and appealing, the menu was diverse enough for everyone in my party to have their favorite. I love a well-made margharita pizza, and later wished I'd ordered the mid size rather than the medium, but I was the only one eating pizza and truly it was plenty and I had leftovers, but I wanted more leftovers. Others had lasagna, chicken Alfredo, calamari, cheesesteak, rosemary fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks and boneless wings. We suddenly realized why it had been so quiet in the "pizza joint" when we noticed the silence at the table at home...we were all savoring our favorite foods--deliciously prepared. The meat was moist, flavorful, and tender, the onions on the cheesesteak beautifully caramalized, the lasagna had that perfect goo to stringy cheese ratio, the calamari was tender, there just was not a misstep anywhere. I stopped by this place for lunch today and it did not disappoint. I got a calzone and it was delicious. The ingredients tasted very fresh and the marinara sauce was on point. We like the food but they REALLY need to work on their customer service. Being a family owned business, you'd expect A LOT more. They messed up our order and we called and they were less than apologetic. We came to get the order fixed and the lady (who I'm pretty sure is the owner) hands my husband the food without even saying a word to him... really? After YOUR mess up?
