Cool lil diner nestled amongst all of the other diners in Los Felix. Keeping this review short and to the point. I ordered the Hippie sandwich which consisted of tomatoes, avocados, alfalfa sprouts, and cheese on wheat bread. Couldn't go wrong with this sandwich. Really good. Where else do you go when you have the munchies after 2 AM? I was here with my friend on Saturday morning, and they did not disappoint :) I love that you can comfortably choose between such gastronomically disparate dishes as waffle sliders (me!) and udon (him!) without a second thought. So many yummy options! Service was brisk, considering how full it was when we arrived. Prices were just right, too. Just a nice, comfortable spot for a good meal at any hour of the day. The only caveats are that they don't serve alcohol after 2 AM (as my friend found out the hard way, ha!) and that some dishes aren't served late. Minor quibbles, though. I appreciate this place because it's open late at night, but i was left rather unsatisfied with the food. I enjoyed the fried Mac n cheese balls and tater tots. They were fried just right, but the salads were ehh at best. I had ordered the Fred's fried chicken yucca salad and as an avid yucca eater I could tell the yucca was not salted when boiled or right after frying so it was pretty bland. The pico de gallo also needed more citrus and salt and I didn't think the jicama was a necessary addition. In general I don't really feel like the salad ingredients went that well together. Sometimes there is an assumption that all "Latino" ingredients blend well, but that's definitely not true. My sister ordered the Thai cob and it was not bad, but I don't think the spinach worked well. Again, a little unnecessary and the dressing was too sweet. The last thing we had was the punk tart. The pastry was nicely to tasted and crisp. If you like jams I would imagine you'd appreciate the filling because it had some good fruit was and acidity. Fred 62 is a legend, is an institution known to everybody in town and most of the tourists, which come to Fred as a part of their vacation. Young, old, day, night, I mean, everybody at anytime goes to Fred:) The menu is overwhelmingly big, but in a good way, so you can always find something for yourself any time of the day or night. I love the vegetarian/vegan options, like tofu chilaquiles, salads and burritos - all substitute with tofu! Plus veggie burger, veggie sandwich, and tons 24/7 breakfast items. I love lunches and brunches there, it really tastes so much better when you are not rushing to work! My latest experience was crucial, because I had to return my noodle dish since it completely did not reflect what I wanted to eat. And much too my embarrassment, it wasn't a big deal and I was able to order something else, just like my friend, who exchanged her salad for with no chicken. It sucks you can't drink outside, but inside you can freely enjoy mimosas for two:) read more

I've been here a few times in the past, and it's always been ... average. You know. Usual food. The only thing that makes it what it is is the location, really. But, on the overall, decent experience. However, tonight, I went to Fred62 because a friend was going through a tough time and just wanted some eats and to talk, and... well.... *sigh* *headscratch* The service sucked hardcore. Our waitress was all kinds of unfocused. Also, whoever was making the food in the kitchen needed to be punched in the face. I ordered a Turkey Burger and fries. Simple enough. However.... 1) the waitress initially brought me out the wrong burger (she put a veggie burger down in front of me that had tomatoes and onions - which I had specifically asked to have removed, so it should've tipped her off) AND!!!! 2) Two bites into my turkey burger that looked delicious? I noted that it was UNDERCOOKED. Severely. Undercooked. One should not eat Undercooked Turkey. I had two bites of it already. Needless to say, I didn't want to eat anything that had meat in it after that. So, I told her to take it back and asked for a grilled cheese instead. Now, I read the menu. I know it comes with a side, but at that point? I'd already eaten a few fries off the turkey burger plate, and I didn't want a side. I just wanted the grilled cheese sandwich. I didn't care if I got charged full-price for the sandwich with no side. But she kept pointing it out and I just simply said, Okay, I'll have fruit. I've only been to Fred 62's twice, and both times I ordered the Eggs in the Hole. What can I say, when I find something that I like... a LOT, it becomes hard for me to take a leap of faith and try something new. The staff was friendly and efficient, and my Eggs in the Hole were fantastic. I like to mix the runny egg yolk with some ketchup and tabasco before using a piece of bread to clean up my plate. So good. The chicken sausage had a distinct "herb-y" aroma (it almost made it taste like French paté), and the bacon was... mmmmmm bacon. I tasted my friend's salmon who ordered the Fairfax High brunch. It was gud. I would love to further explore Fred 62's menu, and will attempt to refrain from ordering the same thing next time I pay them a visit. read more

The bf and I got lunch here after going on a hike and we had a great time. We only had to wait for a little bit and got to sit outside. The food was really good. They say guys do stupid things for girls. The stupid thing I did was let my friend take me here. She always talks about going here, but never has it been in a good light. That should have been my first hint to say, " No, let's not go there after the Dodger game." Instead, I did a stupid thing and now I'm writing about it. On the outside, Fred 62's seems like a good idea. It's a diner on the corner. They've got some great music playing and for the most part, it seems like a cool place to go to. Then you get a closer look. This place is crawling with hipsters. I don't know about you, but I'm not a fan of the hipster scene with their hats and skinny jeans. As for the rest of the atmosphere, I guess it works. The booths are spacious and it's dark enough inside that you can easily ignore the hipsters. I'd have to say the food here is hit or miss. I had the fish and chips which is tough to do outside of a pub or somewhere by an ocean. The fries were good and the fish was ok. Overall, it was a miss but lots of places strikeout on that dish. The menu is huge and I'm sure you can find something good. If I ever come back, there were a few things I'd like to try. Of course, I'll do anything for a good friend so if she ever said let's go, I'd have a chance to try those few other things. The one great thing I can say about this place is it's the perfect drunken after bar hopping spot. If you're not sober enough to get to a Denny's, Fred 62's is an acceptable substitute. Actually, if you're already in hangover mode...the dim lighting is a plus. The food is perfect to soak up all that wonderful alcohol you had but beware getting sick afterward. I'll start with the negative things. Albeit, this restaurant is a landmark for me. I am not giving this place 5 stars because the service is not the best. The servers were just kickin' it while my water glass was empty. The restaurant wasn't even busy when I went--there was like 8 people total. Also, we asked, clearly, for the check AND box, but the dude did not bring a box. Maybe it was because he did not speak English well. Additionally, it might be hard to find close parking. It's not their fault, but I always factor this into my experience at a restaurant. I ordered the: Alice's Egg Sandwich--pretty bomb, the bread was buttery goodness Mac Daddy & Cheese Balls--good and worthwhile, but would taste better if I was drunk Overall, the experience was good--the best part being the food. Went here for breakfast this morning, and although it was busy - they were turning the tables very quickly! We were seated immediately, my girlfriend and I, and had some waters at the table within a minute or two. They came back to check on us once before we ordered, but we weren't ready yet. I opted for a menu item that I can't remember the name of, it's not on the website - but it was delicious! It was composed of two poached eggs with bacon crumbles and hollandaise sauce on top, served on two halves of an oven-baked and stuffed tomato, with hash browns on the plate as well. Me? Speechless? If you know me at all, you know it's a rare thing. That said, I was at a loss for words last night at Fred 62. When my boyfriend suggested "a diner on Vermont" after a concert at the Greek last night, I'll admit - I was dubious. Never again will I doubt his selection in restaurants! Fred 62 features something for everyone. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of creative, tasty vegetarian options. I opted for the tofu chilaquiles (yes, it was 11:30 at night. Don't judge me - I had to do *something* to absorb my liquid dinner from the show!). It was a tough call though - there were veggie flautas, outrageous salads, pastas, and lots of delicious sounding breakfast items. We also ordered the "hunk of burning love" pancakes, which, if you haven't had, you need to stop reading this and go. Now. It's basically one ginormous flapjack with chocolate, bananas, peanut butter, dulce de leche, and about one trillion calories but worth every bite. As good as our meals were (and damn, they were GOOD), they had nothing on the milkshake we shared. Chocolate, peanut butter... it was like sucking heaven through a straw. Our "mmmms" and "ahhhhs" even prompted the couple next to us to order the same. They raved about it as well. The ambience is hard to describe. Open late for all you night owls, this place doesn't compromise taste with the time of day. The wait varies, but the service is always friendly. P.S. you might have to ask them to turn up the light momentarily, as some pages of the menu are printed on a very dark background. Although contrary to some of my friends views on this, this dessert is one to be shared. Amongst 2-3 people is best, but more power to you if you can kill it solo after munching on your entree. First off, place was packed. I think no tables open inside, maybe like one spot on the counter. The ambience is great for those who like to get down with the Los Feliz district. For first timers, the experience was great and service couldn't be any better. This is it. I finally tried their regular food, not just their dessert, and completely sober this time. The "Manhandler" sloppy joe kicked some serious ass. The chunks of red pepper and onions gave a great texture to the usual ho-hum mass of ground beef in a spicy tomato sauce. Also, at first, I thought the sloppy joe was missing something, but then I picked up the green pepper Tabasco sauce and realized the marriage of a perfect sandwich with a perfect hot sauce. Apparently my problem is dousing everything in hot sauce, but I highly recommend it. Five stars for awesome food, delicious desserts, and fast service. Had a nice Sunday brunch at Fred 62. Service was fast, ambience was lively, food was good. I got the blueberry pancakes with a side of hashbrowns, and my friend got the pork-fed corn. We shared an appetizer of flaming hot Mac and cheese balls with the Mac daddy sauce. Although the overall taste of the Mac and cheese balls was good, the flaming hot Cheeto hype wasn't there. The pork fed corn was alright, you have to really be in that pork-belly mood if you want to eat this dish. I came to Fred 62 in the early hours of the morning on Halloween with my boyfriend. With the packed crowd seating inside, outside, and those waiting for a table, I knew that our service wasn't going to be great - it was an absolute madhouse - so this review is for food only. We ordered a chocolate shake, nachos and chicken & waffle sliders. Chocolate Shake - Ok, but not the best one I've had. I think this shake needed to have some chocolate syrup drizzled down the sides to make it a bit more rich; what we had was pretty bland. Thickness was spot on though. Nachos - Eh, these were no way nearly as cheesy as they should've been. They were more greasy from the pork than anything else. Chicken & Waffel Sliders - Ugh! I just ate this because I was starving, but the waffles were too soft and mushy, the chicken should've been crispier, and no way in hell should there be a leafy green with maple syrup on it. We were super disappointed with this slider. I ordered this solely because I was craving chicken tenders which were sadly not on the menu (what kind of diner doesn't have chicken tenders?) I come to Fred's mostly with my dogs and find the area quite comical for people-watching. So, you may ask, if I appreciate the restaurant so much, why the 3 stars? Let's start with my first experience. I brought my dogs, sat in a great part of the patio, had the turkey meatloaf and a side of.. BACON. Yes, bacon is what this review is all about. The bacon was succulent and delicious- thick, juicy and wonderful. Totally worth the 5 bucks or so. It made such an impression on me that I couldn't wait to come back the following weekend. The second time, the bacon was less satisfactory. It was slightly more dry, considerably thinner and puny. I decided to come back another time in hopes that this was just a fluke as the other food we had ordered was up-to-par. The third time, the server presents to me this dried up, crusty bacon that looked like it had been cooked a few days ago and was just pulled out of the refrigerator (it was cold). I sent it back and all that they did was put it in the microwave and give it back to me, thus making it more dry and harder. I sent that back as well and finally got a decent side of bacon. The fourth time, today, I was served shriveled up bacon that was just gross. I couldn't even express words to the server, all I could utter, in astonishment, was, "Can you please bring me some not so gross and disgusting looking bacon?" I wouldn't even entertain the thought of touching it- I wish I had a chance to take a photo but the server took it back immediately. I mean, I've seen dog treats more supple than whatever it was that they had served me. The bacon they brought me after that was "eh", it didn't wow me at all. I know they have some bangin ass bacon back there in the kitchen as I have had it- I wish they'd just quit playing games and give it to me THE FIRST TIME! Now, I've been here 4 times in the past few weeks and have to say I am very pleased with everything else. I only get one day/wk to enjoy what I eat, (I'm watching my diet) so this is why the bacon situation is so important to me. I also don't like throwing away 4-6 bucks on a side of terrible bacon and I am sure many of you can agree with me on this. I'd like to add that I am very satisfied with this restaurant, which is why I keep giving it another chance. Not my favorite diner, but it's not a bad option if you're in a pinch. Yes, they have vegan options, but their menu isn't labeled well (hi, a tuna sandwich isn't vegetarian, and the fact that this menu is telling me it's vegetarian is making me nErVoUs), and most of the options are way healthier than I want to eat for a late night snack. Sure, the East of Eden salad is really good, but the complete lack of vegan sandwiches and burgers is annoying. The last time I was here, I had a beer while my friends grabbed milkshakes. If you're vegan and you're hungry/not too picky, you can definitely get a good meal here. But I don't know...if I'm going to a diner late at night, I want to eat greasy food with the rest of my friends. Service is friendly, vibe is fun, and I do love that they have good beer on draft (last time I was here, there was Golden Road Wolf Pup, yum). I certainly don't hate coming here, it's just not my first choice...ever. A vegan veggie burger would make a world of difference. I'm so over brioche being the bun of choice everywhere.
