I visited Fred 62's at 2 am on New Years morning. It was quite packed and we were forced to wait outside in the more than chilly weather next to the outdoor heater. This place must be popular! I ordered an Arnold Palmer (half lemonade, half tea), and a no animal burger. The no animal burger is delicious. This place was recommended to me by my dear friend Marilyn C. who has written a review of how she is madly in love with this place. The service was very fast considering how many people were in the place. The staff is friendly. The inside has interesting decor, and the "Love Table" is a nice addition that I have never seen in a restaurant before. The "Love Table" is a table that is near the door. It has red velvet curtains, and a cool looking lamp hanging over it. The curtains enclose the table completely so that you have your own small private area. I'm half afraid of it, and half want to try it! read more

Although this place is a little overpriced for what it serves food-wise, their desserts and milkshakes are OUT OF THIS WORLD. Stopped by last night for probably the fifth or sixth time for a peanut butter malt and a sandwich....the malt made my week/month/year/millennium. The Full Monty Cristo is pretty good too, albeit a little heavy for consumption avec said milkshake. I love coming here on weeknight dates for shakes and hand-holding, 1950s style. avoid at all costs for weekend brunch as it's too crazy! but great for late night eats, too. read more

Cute little diner right in the middle Hipsterville, so if you really don't like hispters ... Don't come here. It's infested. I've only had two items on their menu, Tofu Chilaquiles and a vegan burger, don't remember the actual name of it as it reads on their menu, but it was vegan. Both really tasty, however on my last visit the chilaquiles were a little on the bland side. I haven't tried anything from their breakfast menu but that's next on my list next time I visit. Service is usually good, I once ordered a chai latte and put it to side for a while to eat my meal, so it got cold. But no worries, the waitress was happy to warm it up for me, so that was nice. One time, I was sitting at their bar, when a waiter was nonchalantly changing his shirt in front of my boyfriend and I. Not the most professional but since it's located smack dab in the middle of Hipsterville (Los Feliz Village), professionalism may just be a little to mainstream for that waiter. Didn't the waitress know that I review a lot of restaurants on this site? She must not have recognized me, because she was slowey mcgee! The food was tasty, but difficult to handle...this is based purely on my order of a "hippy sandwich", which had a huge hunk of lettuce taking up most of my mouth room. Tomatoes were just slopped on...some may say "loosey goosey". For shame. I love sandwiches, so when I make them (for myself or others), I make each one as if it were a direct reflection of myself. Fred 62's is better then Swingers (but not better then swingers 5 years ago when they had a better menu which featured bacon and cream cheese filled french toast). They've got too many choices on the menu...I'm always kind of wary about places that have American, Mexican and Japanese....cause they never do them all well. From what I've sampled, the American food is pretty delicious in a really bad for you kind of way (mac n cheese balls are a once a year sort of treat in my book). The Mexican food is pretty meh, as you would expect...it also seems like you get a lot less food for the $ with the Mex-options....$7 for 2 small mushroom flautas? Really? Really. I haven't tried any of the Japanese dishes...probably best not to. Sidenote: Whoever writes the description of the items on the menu does a really good job of making it sound way more fancy and tasty then the food you will soon receive. read more

Another place that's good for after drinking pre hangover preparedness. They are very happy to accommodate your random drunken needs. Except for this one server who has a stick up his bum that has apparently been working there for 10 years. Ha, no seriously. I've had him as a server twice now. And both times I asked for biscuit gravy for my fries and he told me they don't have it. But that is untrue because they serve biscuits and gravy. He then proceeds to argue with you and tell you that he's been there for 10 years (which is impressive if your a deadbeat actor who cant get a gig, ha) the moral of that story is... if your weird like me and love biscuit gravy you got to ask a busboy or another server if you want it. Besides that guy the food is usually great and fresh. They have good pickles too. And their macaroni cheese balls are delicious! I definitely recommend this place. read more

I visited Fred's with a co-worker after he brought in the Seattle train on Thursday night (late). We first stopped by Cafe 101, but the parking lot was packed, and this was the next closest place I could think of. Drinks... I ordered 2 Cokes.. the first one was flat. For Dinner/Breakfast I chose the "Eggs in the Hole." Instead of toast, I had an English Muffin, suggested by our friendly waitress. The English Muffin and eggs were good, but arrived at room temp. I was so hungry I didn't care enough to complain however. Hash browns good, not great, but the bacon was MOST EXCELLENT! Big pieces of real bacon, not too thinly sliced = big smile on my face. My co-worker had the club sandwich, loved it, and was holding his stomach until I delivered him back to the crew hotel. Fred's is always packed, but luckily we stood for only a few minutes before spotting an open seat (indoors). 4 stars next time if my hot meal is served hot. ;) The restaurant is kept clean, bussers and other wait staff are attentive and friendly, and the area is good and safe. read more

Standard diner food in a trendy hipsterized diner setting. The food is overpriced and average but it sure does hit the spot at about 2AM when your drunk munchies hit. The fish and chips is pretty solid though. The breakfast items are decent too (Egg-in-a-Hole!). Am I strange to want breakfast food at night? I rather not have to resort to fast food or coffee at night so this place is PERFECT! Thank God for Fred 62! My friend and I always have clashing schedules so we only really get to hang out and eat after dark and Fred 62's is usually where we head towards when we feel our stomachs starting to envelope themselves. Haha. It really doesn't matter what you order, you really can't go wrong. I'm usually a creature of habit but when EVERYTHING on the menu looks so delicious I can't help but try something new. And I have yet to be disappointed. I've tried everything from the French Toast to the French Dip and just thinking about it makes my mouth water. I know I mentioned above that I wouldn't want coffee for dinner, but I lied. Fred 62 makes a mean latte, and having been a barista for over 5 years, I know what I'm talking about. The people who work there are also very relaxed and hardworking. And for the people who haven't been there yet will enjoy their witty T-shirts and risque outfits. It just makes you want to come back. My budbud and I came here a rainy friday morning after running an errand. The parking isn't exactly plentiful so you have to kind of find street parking in the residential area. We decided to share the cheese balls. She got a grilled cheese sandwich and I got an omelette. Omlette was good but not super memorable, and cheese balls were ahhhamzing. Their menu is extensive but I don't know if every item is that great, I generally like restaurants that have a smaller menu and do an amazing job with those few items. Service was a REAL downer, there were two waitresses and they looked so miserable to be there. They were slow in taking orders, getting orders to us, getting check to us. Also highly inattentive, we ordered a burger to go that we wanted when we left, but she brought it out while we were eating (that was supposed to be for a coworker in the office!) I love this diner. This diner is the perfect place for breakfast, lunch, dinner and a late night snack! I was originally introduced to this place by a family member and I kept coming back! I've also recommended this place to everyone I know! Every time anyone ask me where they can find a fulfilling meal during the wee hours or anytime of the day I always recommend Fred's. The ambiance is very hip but very calm at the same time. From time to time you can catch yourself dining next to someone famous. I've sat next to people like Miranda Cosgrove to Tony Hawk! What I love about this place is that the people who eat here respect their privacy (partially due to the fact that you can't keep your eyes off your food!) This place is 24 hours 7 days a week! I love the tuna melt and patty melt. For dessert i recommend to everyone that they try the BOSSANOVA WAFFLE!! read more

I've been here twice - once in the middle of the night, and once during the day after a trip to a museum. Both times I really enjoyed my experience. I love that their menu is so varied, with tons of delicious breakfast items as well as lunch/dinner, all served at all times. They have simple staple items and also interesting, creative dishes. I think Fred 62 is above average. For $30 my husband and I enjoy delicious salads and Fat Tire beer for dinner. The creative atmosphere and menu appeals to me. The mac and cheese balls are intense, while the burgers and noodles are good. We just had a 62nd birthday party here for Fred. We filled up the table near the entrance with nine people. The service was pretty good and the owner Fred gave our Fred a free raunchy T-shirt. People ordered the chicken pot pie (looked very impressive), the brisket (Fred cleaned his plate) and turkey meatloaf (to each his own). Stick to the beer, though - the wine was not good. Parking can be a challenge, depending on the time of day. Insider tip: You can drink beer inside, but not outside. read more

Maybe my review is tempered by the fact that I'm not generally a hipster fan (aside from the friend who took me here who seems to be in deep into the whole Silverlake-Echo Park-Loz Feliz thing). This is my new late night favorite. I know this place has been here for a while, but I'm kinda new to Los Feliz. My favorite is the Tuna Nicoise sandwich with sweet potato fries and that side pickle. Their malts are spectacular. Breakfast is great. Vegan? You're in the right place. French toast is everything you can imagine. Their waffles are big and look delicious. Have yet to try the desserts. I asked the guy for a party of 4. Then he told us to go sit on the table from the corner. (He just pointed at it) he did not walk us to the table, did not gave us a menu until 10 min later, didn't asked us what we wanted for drink. This review is long overdue. On June 3rd, at the end of my Monday night birthday celebration, some friends and I stopped at Fred 62 for gratuitous late night snacks. We were in a raucous mood and had spent the preceding hours imbibing and scheming a nonsensical political campaign centered around L.A. proper's unjust parking enforcement. The server who was working (we called him "Jason" without ever actually asking his name) was attending to a diner full of debauched customers without any support and was seemingly flustered by the punk tart pandemonium. While we curated our equal-parts-savory-and-sweet order at a leisurely pace (because don't rush me on my birthday, Jason!), he defiantly tossed napkin-wrapped silverware across a nearby table. When Jason returned to our table to take orders, I knew my dietary restrictions might test his mettle; yet, I had faith in his ability to transcend my tyrannical inclinations. "I'll have an order of tater tots with sour cream, guacamole, salsa and...a side of tears." I squealed with delight at my deadpan delivery. Jason stared at me with stony, even murderous, eyes. Rightfully so. When our tots, pancakes, punk tarts, and whatever else were consumed, we grew tired and slightly remorseful. It's genuinely a diner experience, there's no culinary mastermind in the back but you're getting fairly priced food in a clean and inviting environment. Yelper Carmela was kind enough to remind me (just by mentioning the name) that I've been to Fred 62 on my quest...it must've been 3 years ago (or something) but I remember it well, a good experience. The standard house buttermilk pancakes were excellent, and I think they were relatively huge, as well. I can't remember if they served real maple syrup or not but I wouldn't be surprised. The only problem was that they didn't have any butter on the table or deliver any to me with the plate when I got it. Anybody knows you MUST have everything you need there ALL AT ONCE while the pancakes are fresh: butter, syrup and enough of both to really soak in while the heat is still in the dough. I had to get up to get some or lose the golden triangle (heat, butter, syrup). I'd go back even though there was an air of "we're so ultra hip" about the place...I thought they might've relaxed a bit in their old age but have recently been informed that this has not occured...thank-you Madame S. read more

I have been going here so long that it wasn't even Fred's back then! It was Georges, only open for breakfast and lunch and run by a sharp tongued athletic Russian woman and her handsome son. But I digress, when Georges closed i was sad and did not feel dispose to approve of the new incarnation, twice as big as Georges (took over next door and bashed the wall through)..but Fred certainly had a wacky style and menu to boot. I have enjoyed the city vibe (often missing in LA), the food is amusingly titled and good, the customers easy on the eyes but to not too showbiz. It's open 24 hour, SO needed east of Hollywood where hum drum Astro used to rule the late nighters. Parking is a challenge but it quickens the senses, and the latest menus virtually impossible to read at night for the over 40s (red on red or something) maybe this is to keep the crowd young!. I had dinner at Fred's last night. I have only experienced Fred's one other time and it was fine. Our Server was friendly and fast (the place was packed it was a Sunday at Brunch time) My Vegetarian Club sandwich with a side of fries was really good. The food is not so cheap but eating out in a hip part of a major city, well it is pretty much what I expect to pay. I do wish they had a few more organic items considering the price of the food. Ok but onto the real reason that I have to give this place 1 star. Last night I had dinner and Michael was my server. He was by far the rudest server I have ever had in my life. He did not make eye contact at all the entire time we spent at the restaurant. He never came back to check on how we were doing or to refill our drinks. After we had finished our appetizer and our meals, we needed to go over a few papers and we wanted to have hot tea and some dessert. Well Michael did not bother to ask if we wanted anything else. He dropped the check off without a word. We put some cash down to pay the bill and went on talking about our project and trying to decide if we should get dessert at Fred's or, move across the street for something tasty. After dropping our change back off again without one word to us he then came back by without looking at us he picked up the change ** NOT HIS TIP** told us that he could not let us sit in his section all night and that he needed us to go. (We got into Fred's at 6:30 this was now about 7:05) Before I could tell him how rude he was or ask for my lemon cake he left taking what he assumed was a very nice tip for such a rude server. I finally got the bus boys attention and asked for hot teas and some lemon cake. He went to get Mr. Rude server for me so I could get my order put in. Again NOT looking at me he took my dessert order rolled his eyes and walked away. When he dropped the check the next time I again paid him in cash. When he brought back our money we decided that he got much more then he deserved with the first tip he took for himself, so we took our money and left. He then chased the three of us out of the restaurant trying to tell me that I did not pay him the $11.00 for my two hot teas and a piece of lemon cake. I had to remind him that I did pay him I just didn't tip him for the most ridicules service I have ever received. read more

This place kinda sucks. I've ended up there a few times b/c sometimes you are just hungry after poker and it's late at night. I can't really say that I've had anything close to spectacular. Usually, I order breakfast or the french dip. The boyfriend had the mac and cheese balls and the chicken fried steak last time and neither were great. Chicken fried steak was really dry but the gravy was ok. The club was almost inedible. Last time, the french dip was made of roast beef that should have been at subway. Do give them point for the onion rings, but I'm on an onion ring kick right now. First of all, its great having a walking-distance 24 hour diner in my neighborhood. If you live in Los Feliz, this place should be a staple! Secondly, a diner that doesn't serve greasy food! I'm sure you could get greasy food, but they have great healthy choices (their steamed veggie plate is amazing), and the grilled cheese isn't overloaded with cheddar. This is s cute diner located on a great street with tables outside, great for people watching. I ordered their burger and asked for it rare, since I am French and we like out meat bloody. I'm used to getting my meat cooked more than I ask, so was expecting medium-rare. Nope! Their was no pink to be found. It was served medium-well with a "rare" little sign on it. Alright, so I've frequented Fred 62 just about every time I'm in Los Feliz, so that's got to say something right? I'm only just reviewing because of the time it took to find that gem on the menu, even though i dug the styling of the place right off the bat and all the regular diner eats are great, e.g. onion rings (with ranch sauce for my bf, ketchup for me) and what else - the peanut butter milk shake and the macaroni balls. Mmm. The Sonoma Salad one way: with chicken and the other: with shrimp works either way depending on if you want your protein by land or sea. Very fresh salad that isn't a bunch of filler. The crumbled cheese, apples, shrimp or chicken all pleased my palette and was a big serving to be a filling meal all by itself. My friend Emily took a chance on their chicken pot pie, being a savory-inclined person, and got a little more than she bargained for. Not necessarily in a bad way, however. It's a big one guys, with a moat of green sauce around the island of pot pie. The presentation is different from your usual diner fair, even from what else you could order here, but I liked the effort. Em thought there could be less crust to the pie and I thought some gravy might improve it too, but the fresh chicken, good sauce, plump and buttery broccoli and cauliflower, and flaky crust sold me. It was too much for my amiga so I took the rest home and enjoyed my 2 for 1 the next day. Bottom line is all the standard diner ecoutrements are here and great, so it's nice to branch out into the rest of the lengthy menu, but you may have to do some digging before you find that special something. If one needed an example of the over-commercialization and packaging of 'indie-ness,' one need not look further than Fred '62 in (as one Griffith Park Fire television reporter described as) "tony" Los Feliz. As an admitted 'yindie,' I do not mind paying $13.62 for nachos, but I'm fortunate enough to afford such tortillian luxuries. For the true indie set, those who have shunned selling out to 50-hour work weeks in the financial district, I cannot recommend Fred's without feeling a bit hypocritical. On a more culinary note, Fred's delivers what any 'high end' diner should: great food, interesting menu choices, and a hip atmosphere. I've been diner-ing here for the past few years, and I enjoy Fred 62's contribution to the North Vermont lunch counter scene. read more

Ok so I usually don't write reviews, I just read them...however today's dining experience at Fred's compelled me to get it started. SUPER pet peeved when you order something and they "are all out". UGHHH!! Especially when its on the "specials" menu. And mas especiado when you find that ONE thing you are SURE you wanna eat right that second. Mine AND hubbys hungry mouths were all ready for the Pastrami short rib sandwich, Fred's answer to the 'Best sandwich you've ever had'. More like the best one I never had. To make matters worse, they were also out of the second item i asked for- sweet potato fries!! I mean, COME ON!!! What DO you have??? To which the waitress drily replied, "everything else". Tsk! OOOOKay. Opted (finally) for the Tower of Power, as I do like turkey and avocado, and Swiss, and BLTs. This one was stacked SUPER high, and piled with all the right ingredients. It was decent, I could barely finish half, and the side salad was good, albeit kinda plain. Might I suggest, though, adding some kinda flava to the sandwich. Like maybe some of that balsamic dressing and some sprouts. THAT, my dear Fred, would take it to another level. Hubbster ordered the fish and chips and they pretty much were on point!! Kinda the highlight of the meal I'd say. Killt it. Strawberry/vanilla bean/lemonade in a mason jar (ok y'all fancy), it was really sweet, but aiight. Much as I LOVE s'mores, do yourself a favor and save your $4 and make some at home. Their "smookie" just made me wanna "smackie" someone. Cookie: dry; chocolate: eh; marshmallow: yeah I ate that.
