Good times, great food, and interesting brews! Set in the quaint, historic village of Smithville, a cozy little restaurant. I have been going here to eat for the past 6 years with various friends and family. I normally eat here about 3 to 4 times a year. I have almost never been disappointed in the quality of the food. The french onion soup is delicious! As well as the bay bites! I love the selection of beers and ciders! The portions are huge and I have never left hungry! On my last visit, the serve was great. This restaurant was a disappointment to our group. There were six of us and another joined us after we had ordered. The server brought a menu but never returned to take the order. She did not refill water glasses or coffee and the food was very slow coming out of the kitchen. Then we had to wait and wait for the server to take our ticket and money. They have the best specials during the week like homemade Chinese food, or Prime Rib, etc. My wife loves the Champagne cocktail and for me the 609 Ipa does the job! Visited Fred & Ethel's twice in a 24-hour period: once post-wedding reception and again the next morning. Unfortunately, F&E doesn't serve breakfast, so our partied-out party was kinda bummed. Fred & Ethel's was fun the night before, a simple bar with an assortment of folks, including us. The owners were sweet. I think I only paid about $50 for a round of shots for 8 people, before tip of course. The jukebox had some gems. In the morning I was grumpy about the no-breakfast situation, and it took me a few minutes to accept my fate and find something appetizing on the menu. But I found it: substituting cheddar for swiss, I had the grilled cheese, crab, and tomato on sourdough. Ohhhhh, man, that was delicious. The crab tasted fresh, the bread had a good crunch, the melted cheese was gooey & salty, and the tomato offset the rich flavors. I thought about that sandwich for days. I only wish I'd also had the tomato bisque! There were 8 to 10 of us at the table, and it wasn't until we finished eating that the waitress told us Fred & Ethel don't/won't split checks. Seemed a tad absurd given the mini-tourist attraction vibe here. The place was crawling with people for an Italian festival the day before! So three stars for that, the absence of breakfast, and the less enthusiastic sentiments of my fellow eaters. read more

Had great food here on 2 consecutive Fridays. They've provided several options for seating & you can choose where you'll feel most comfortable. For us it was an outside table on their raised patio. The Tavern burger was outstanding! I really think it's the best I've ever had! Excellent fries are just $1.50 with your sandwich. Today I tried the Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner and loved that also. Fresh mixed vegetables, Yukon Gold mashed potatoes, large slice of moist roast turkey, gravy, stuffing, & cranberry sauce all nicely plated and delicious. It's not very often that we find a restaurant that we like the first time and then have an equally good experience the next time also. So I hope that they keep up the good work in friendly service and food that's good enough to drive 90 minutes to get there from New York! read more

I drove out to Smithville with my parents and decided to stop into Frank & Ethel's for some drinks and lunch. It's nice inside, well lit and pretty loud. We were sat after about five minutes and got drinks very fast. I got the Sangrita and returned it after one sip - absolutely disgusting! After switching it to the Peachy Keen, our appetizer arrived. Bay Back Crab Cakes, wow so good; I almost didn't want to share the 8 little balls with my parents! Our dinners came: Tavern Burger, Bleu Crab Burger, and a chicken Caesar wrap - nothing we'd get again. My dad thought the bacon tasted like shoe leather, my crab was hard like there was still shell in it & was salty AF. My moms wrap looked very meaty but also as basic as a white girl wearing uggs drinking Starbucks. Would I come back? Yea sure - for more drinks. Food? Maybe just the crab cakes. read more

Just finished the grilled cheese with short rib.... to die for!!!! My husband had the crabby patty and said it was amazing as well. We started with the bang bang shrimp and they were a great size and not over fried.Our server Kayla was a doll and came with drinks and food quickly. It was the Italian Festival today and crazy so we had a wait but worth it. Just, when its super crowded and you have to put your name in, make sure you keep track because they skipped over us and seated the people that were behind us first, when my husband approached them they argued with him saying they called him twice when they did not because we were 3 feet away from hostess stand. We made a first time visit yesterday 9/3/21 with our grandkids. Our party was 7 and while the food order came out in a timely fashion, our final bill was our concern. We added to the check the tip for the waitress and later that day reviewing the bill found out that the waitress's tip was already included in the final total. So she was double tipped for a amount in the tune of $26.00. We were not notified that the tip would be included in the final cost. This was our first time at the tavern . It was a Sunday afternoon and it was crowded . My husband and I had a drink at the bar to wait for a seat . We actually had a table in 15 mn as the hostess said we would . ( my husband would have liked to stay at the bar , they have TVs around and the Phillies were playing BUT we actually had a very nice time at the table ! The food was very good I had the tomato soup and half wrap ( chicken salad ) my husband had a bacon cheese burger . The portions are large enough to fill yourself up for sure ! Today this was more like a meatloaf mound. We also got the tater tots with short ribs on top. Totally disappointing with both. We understood it was very busy and she was the only one working the bar but she was not friendly and went out of her way to be nasty. We always enjoy walking around historic Smithville & checking out the quaint shops. There aren't a lot of restaurants with wait service there, so we frequently dine here. I like the lively atmosphere in the bar area. It's has a good selection of beers including an IPA from Cape May Brewing Company, one of the more popular breweries in South Jersey. The service is good & the food came out in a timely fashion. My husband ordered a clam & chicken combo that was served with fries & cole slaw. There wasn't a great deal of flavor, just mainly fried. I had a chicken sandwich with roasted red peppers & arugula. The chicken needed more seasoning & the role barely keep the contents in check. Still, we'll go back for the outdoor seating, reasonable prices, and upbeat vibe. read more

Went there on a Saturday night and we were seated in the dining area immediately. The service was prompt and attentive. Our dinner was spaced out appropriately from our drinks to our appetizers, then meals. We relaxed a bit at our table and ordered a dessert to go. The quantity and quality of food was excellent. On our way out, we saw 2 empty seats at the bar ( which had a nice size crowd), so we decided to stay for a few drinks. There was a duo playing in the corner and were very good. The TVs had all Philadelphia games on. It wasn't too noisy, so you were still able to hold a conversation. The bartenders were great. We felt very relaxed and comfortable. The dining and bar bills were in my opinion, reasonable. We highly recommend Fred and Ethyl's and will definitely return on our next trip to South Jersey. read more

Lunch was good. I was disappointed with paying extra 1.50 for fries. Check out the photographs of fries on this site. I was happy paying extra for fries in the past that were really good. They seemed to be cut from real potatoes. What I got today seemed to be packaged frozen potatoes that were not that much better than Burger King. Bring back the old fries or drop the extra 1.50 for fries. read more
