They made us wait 45-50 minutes which was understandable because it was Oktoberfest. But they did not tell us there was a special Oktoberfest menu and you couldn't order off the original menu. Tomato Bisque was just right, the creamy crab bisque was ok, very thick and not hot enough. Flat iron steak tasty and very tender. Brazino special also tasty. Veggies were just right. Service was slow on a snowy Saturday night, but server was friendly. As for bar service, they are not super responsive (kinda having a party of their own) and drinks were actually too strong, way too strong. Friendly service. Peak Summer Season might cause a wait along with having to park across the street in a sandy/dirt-lot which might be challenging if it is raining and you need to slosh through a tad muddy-puddles. Always great!! Cobb salad is delicious and a special prime rib sandwich which we were told is usually on Friday but we also had it on a Sunday!! Very affordable... friendly, lovely and efficient and attentive staff. The meatloaf looked great (made a note to order the next time)! Historic Smithville is great... Service was very slow and inattentive. Not at all welcoming or sensitive to guests' needs. I never received refills on water or drinks, and the server did not offer to ask, although glasses were empty early on. Food took a very long time to arrive, although the dining area was about 60% full on a weekend evening. I felt like I was being ignored. Food was blah. I had the crab cake sandwich. It did not come with remoulade on the side, as described on the menu. This rendered the sandwich completely tasteless, as the crab cake itself did not have enough seasoning on its own. Drink prices are not listed on their menu which is a pet peeve of mine and when you get the bill you know why...drinks are way too overpriced. They charged me an extra plate fee when my wife and I tried to share a huge plate of food. They were not polite about it either. The experience turned me off pretty bad and I will not be coming back here. This place stays afloat because of tourists rather than locals so not sure my review will be enough to warn people, but there are better more reasonably priced restaurant/bars in the area with friendlier staff and that won't charge you for sharing food. I've been to the tavern several times while spending the day at Smithville and have always been pleased with the food and service. Last night we came with a large group of about 30 people (who were at Stockton University for a professional retreat). Fred & Ethel's staff could not have been any more genuine, friendly and warm! Not once did they seem overwhelmed by our size and the many questions we had - and we had many as we were ordering right off the menu. Most of us indulged in the $2 margaritas special - quite a tasty well balanced drink. We had several appetizers including nachos, buffalo wontons, and fries smothered in cheese and gravy with roast meat - YUMMY! Though I did not have soup this time - several others enjoyed bowls of French onion smothered in cheese or the special soup of the day which looked to be a beer vegetable. Dinners ranged from huge burgers (mine was a perfect medium rare loaded with onions, mushrooms and cheese) to entrees including snapper, linguini, and meatloaf. It was Mexican night so many ordered tasty Mexican treats. No one left hungry - many took home leftovers. Everyone in the group was happy and well fed. Ok. The place looks cozy and was very inviting. I ordered the chili and it genuinely looked tasted exactly like Hormel's canned meat chili. I also ordered the half chicken breast which was in a wine-like gravy and the veges right beside them was flavored with Asian spices. The mashed potatoes were cold and disappointing, possibly reheated. The stuffing which was a hidden jewel of rolled up breading containing items that resembled fruit cake ingredients. My wife and I really enjoy this cozy restaurant. We were walking around smithville shops and stoped in for a beer n snack.. Beer was very cold and we had a mahi tostada appetizer. My god that was so good. Fresh mahi, corn salsa was to die for. Codos to cheif. So we came back for dinner. Appetizer of fried calamari. Came out with a golden brown coating tender and excellent. I stopped in for a late lunch and had an excellent meal. The crab meat and Swiss sandwich was delicious and the portion was filling. Can't say much for the rest of the big party that I was with but for an app I ordered buffalo wings and they were very good to my surprise. My dinner however did not surprise me at all, I ordered the pasta and clams with white sauce. The portion was huge and they gave me four or five steamer clams and probably a whole CAN of chopped clams on top... I've never seen anything like it it was absurd. Went to this place about a week ago when I went to Atlantic City with my family. We had dinner there two nights in a row and we were not disappointed. Their soups are delicious and the food portions given to you are pretty big. So you def get your moneys worth (decently priced).
