This used to be one of my very favorite restaurants since I was a little boy, around 1972. But, since the latest owners took over, and ESPECIALLY since hiring the really rude RHONDA. I no longer patronize or recommend the place. The food is still good and the addition on Mexican food is a bonus; but the customer service, especially from the rude RHONDA, makes the place a place to avoid. I no longer go or recommend. Now, on a weekday on a Thursday in December 2025. Me and my coworker went for lunch. I've gotten the steak burrito and he got the fish sandwich. We got inside our company vehicle, opened our food and was ok with the food (appearance wise). But, as soon I went to grab my burrito, oil was dropping a lot from it and it was coming apart. If you want the absolute worst food on the Southside this is the spot. My group ordered gyros, chicken wings, a fish sandwich and a steak sandwich. Each order came with greasy fries that were cooked in days old grease, the gyros weren't included in the initial pick up (so we had to drive back a second time,) the chicken wings were passable, fish sandwich severely overcooked and the steak was well, tough as hell. If you have the misfortune to visit this establishment order a strawberry shake and then leave immediately. An absolute waste of time and money. read more

Let me start by saying that I have been a customer of Fred and Jack's since the late sixties. My family and neighbors loved their food. Fast forward to the present and I am so very disappointed with anything I order. I want to know what happened to the quality and integrity of this establishment. It is not cubes or chunks of beef. The chicken is shredded. The are soft tacos that didn't hold up well during delivery. I was also not a huge fan of the seasoning they use but I fixed that. -bacon cheeseburger with fries= this item is the MOAB! It's the size of a manhole cover with 2 large patties. This thing was easily a half a pound! Generous condiments including bacon, cheese, avocado, onion. I addK,L,T at home so the veggies hold up. All in all, surprised and fairly impressed. I got my order through Uber Eats and when it was delivered I realized my Birria tacos were not made how I requested. I called the store and spoke with the cook and cashier. Somehow Uber Eats messed up communication of what I wanted vs what they made. I didn't live far so I was willing to drive there to switch my order out. I like this restaurant because you can get some good food for a very inexpensive price. The first time I went was with a friend who found this place by accident and we decided why not try this place. I had been in the area and at one point lived down the street from Fred and Jack's but never noticed the place. Anyway I'm glad that we found it because the food was good and the service was quick. I thought we were going to be waiting a long time because the place was packed but luckily they have a system and it works. I went to Fred and Jack's on 10/2. Ordered an Italian Beef special which was absolutely awful. They put tender meat on top of thick tough strips of beef that makes the sandwich look like it will be delicious, it was awful. The meat was so tough that it couldn't be chewed and swallowed. The fries were greasy and cut into thick fries and thin fries. It appears they were cooked much earlier in the day. I will not give my money to a restaurant that has no pride in the food they serve and it's not cheap. That was my last visit to this joint. I can't believe that I've never reviewed this place. Well, Fred&Jack's is the sister store to the Legendary El Gran on Central and North Avenue on the Westside of Chicago. It's not quite as good, but it's a close enough facsimile for the Southside. Their signature dishes are burritos, tacos, and Cheese steak fries. Their breakfast is also very good. 20-25 years ago, I had nothing but love for this place. And then that one chance encounter with Mr. La Cucaracha forced me to make a long self-imposed separation decision. Well, today, while traveling through the great food dessert trying to decide what to have for dinner, we decided to return to the scene of the crime. After she explained how they were charging for practically any enhancement added to the basic sandwich, I understood the decision. I usually get my gyros from a joint called Nicky's out in Midlothian, IL, so that was my frame of reference for comparison. Clearly, this wasn't Midlothian, and this wasn't Nicky's, and long story short, this sandwich wasn't necessary. I guess some people think that the more onion on a sandwich will make you forget how tasteless the overall sandwich turned out to be. At least it came with fries and a bottle of pop. I come here for the milkshakes and always leave on a cloud. Why? Because the guys behind the counter always flirt..and not in the gross out way. It's cute. The shakes here are UH-MAZE-INGGGG. Hands down, one of the best reasons to come here. It's right off the expressway, so it's located where anyone could come down here, but not in the best neighborhood at night. The parking lot also is TEENY as I've almost gotten hit every time I either exit or enter, so be careful. They are known for their tacos and burritos, and sad to say, I've never had either from here. When I'm here, I go for the nachos, the burgers or chicken sandwiches. And while it's greasy food that you go for rarely, it's good. The staff is always warm and they can handle any size crowd, and do so effectively. However, I go for the milkshakes. They have various flavors, banana, chocolate, strawberry, vanilla and others.
