Great food and service every time Recommend it highly for special occasions or casual drinks

Let me start this is the first time I have ever left a Yelp review as I have never felt compelled to comment on a poor experience in the past. On the positives, the food is great. The biggest complaint however is the nickel and diming of the customers. 1. They charge you $.50 each for bread but put the butter on the table when you arrive to entice you to order. And for those who don't eat bread like the gluten free diners at my table, we got charged per piece regardless. 2. They charge $35 for a cake fee when you bring an outside cake to the restaurant. The fee must cover the candle and the unboxing which I personally do not feel is ever worth $35! Just ludicrous! 3. They charge $4 to split a salad and then the same to split a meal. In the end, my party of 6, paid over $365 and of that, $55 were in the ridiculous fees as above. This restaurant clearly doesn't put diners first and it is a shame as it will be our last time eating at this establishment. I would advise others to look elsewhere when deciding where to eat in San Antonio. read more

We had a ladies get together there and 25 showed up. Food and service was excellent. Parking not good, but there was plenty of room inside. I personally would not go in if I can't find a place to park. Wish they could expand the parking lot, there's other businesses in the strip center. Service was really good, surprisingly when there's a lot of customers, but they were prepared. It was awesome. read more

I wanted to love this place so much I gave it 2 tries. They are very inconsistent which not good for an upscale bistro. Your appetizer might be super delicious but your lamb severely undercooked. Their deserts are the same... some delicious, and some terrible. Same for the service. Try at your own risk! You may be thrilled or very disappointed. We had a lovely birthday party tonight at Frederick's. Great service and a pretty setting. The food was delicious and plentiful. Our appetizers included calamari, Brussel sprouts and a fried egg roll ( not sure what it was because I didn't order it). All three were fabulous! The Brussel sprouts could be an entire meal! My husband and I split the Parmesan crusted halibut. Wonderful! We also had the au gratin potatoes and a blue cheese salad. The other guests near me had snapper and lamb chops. Their happy hour is the best! The food is delicious! Service is great. Prices are good. It is a great value!

The steak was not good, and I will never order it again. The calamari was awesome, and the salad was good as well. The service was on point and very attentive. The ambiance is what keeps people coming back. This is in a tiny shopping center. The Bistro has at least 30 tables or more but only about 10 parking spots. You will get towed if you park across the street at the Tea place. People have to circle and circle to hope someone is leaving to find parking. This place has been here a long time and has a lot of returning customers. The salad plate was about the size of a coffee saucer and was 10 dollars. The calamari was 18, and the steak was 48. They now charge for bread. It's a great spot but certainly has some drawbacks and quirks. read more

Everything was perfect - greeting, service, food, ambiance and price. The reservation process was easy.

Some of the best food in town, plus, the wait staff is great, the decor is nice and comfortable,, and the dining area is light and open.

The service was prompt and very friendly. Appetizer was very good and the brussel sprouts were huge serving. Pizza was superb.

My husband took me here for our anniversary and I was at first a little skeptical if the food would be any good. As soon as we walked in I saw so many older, cute couples dressed up and enjoying dinner. This was a good sign! The ambiance is cozy and romantic so I definitely recommend for date night. To start off, we ordered the crab cake, which was delicious and the tart salad that was served with it really offsets the crab cake well. For our main entrees, I am a steak lover, but I decided to order the halibut. I will not regret choosing fish! The halibut really impressed me with it's hot, crispy, and melting meat. My husband ordered the beef tenderloin which was a bit bland. For dessert, I ordered the Frederick's trio to try a little bit of everything, but was not impressed at all. The creme brulee was rubbery and very strong on the egg flavor. I would try a different dessert next time. Nice spot to check out! read more

Been eyeing this place since restaurant week and decided to finish out my birthday week here tonight. Making a reservation for 4 via email was easy enough. The restaurant is located at the end of a shopping strip mall area in Shavano Park. The inside is old-fashioned and not very cute per se, but I do appreciate having linens when dining in. The clientele was older and seemed like many of them were regulars. The chef-owner, Frederick, was around to greet his regulars and assist as needed, which was a nice touch. The service was on a slower side, but we had a good conversation going and didn't mind...it was after all a busy Saturday night. We opted for duck pâté as a starter, as well as chicken vegetable soup, then duck confit pizza and steak. Our friends had scallops with shrimp and duck/chicken combo. Everything was quite flavorful and perfectly cooked. The dessert was my favorite though - we tried the Frederick's trio consisting of mango créme brûlée, rum euphoria, and chocolate terrine. Five years ago we had our first date here and we have been dining regularly ever since. We like HAPPY HOUR menu and pricing. Great Lemon Drop Martinis. The chicken lettuce wraps are delicious. I like their Spaghetti and Meatballs, my husband loves the Muscles and Calamari. They are always busy which is a good thing. read more

Servicd was brisk and efficient although clearly they were short handed. Cuisine is listed as French Asian fusion and that is true . Menu has some traditional items found in a high end American restaurant but also some delicious surprises. The server was very professional but accidently switched our bill with another table but caught it. Restaurant has a very impressive high tech electronic ordering and integrated billing system. Noise level is acceptable but like most restaurants these days, it was difficult sometimes to hear other guests at the table, ask for a quiet corned uf you want a more intimate dinner. . read more

Everything I've had to eat at Frederick's is great. I highly recommend it. I love their Happy Hours, and the Happy Hour bites. I love that as a senior, I feel very comfortable sitting at their bar because it's not all super young kids. It's my favorite happy hour place in San Antonio so far. read more

Had a great dinner last night - I called and got a reservation - the restaurant was full by 7:00 pm - two people in my group had the steak (one wishes they had the sauce on the side) and I had the shrimp and scallop dish. We started with a crab cake (very good) and the escargot - our server was very attentive and various other servers kept our drinks and waters filled. read more

My family and I come here at least three times a month. The food is always so flavorful and fresh and the bar drinks are always perfect. We usually sit on the bar side of the restaurant and have equally as good service in a more relaxed atmosphere. however, we've also come in and sat on the Restaurant side, which is more of a fine dining experience. I absolutely adore everything about Frederick's! The French/Asian fusion is an incredible concept and each dish uniquely reflects that. Their daily specials, colorful salads, and fresh bread always hit the spot. Every dish, whether it be meat or fish, is always cooked to perfection. Have you ever been in close proximity to something very special, yet, for unknown reasons, never indulged yourself of the treasure? This was our very experience with Frederick's Bistro on NW Military Highway. Living a few blocks away, I had often noticed the steady flow of patrons in and out of the restaurant as I visited other establishments in the area, but my mind was on business, not food. Saturday however, Marjan and I were searching for a new dining experience for date night, and we decided to give this Bistro a visit. Frederick's anchors the end of a strip center, and frankly is rather unassuming in appearance. But friends, looks can be deceiving. We were greeted by the proprietor (?), who led us past the bar to a booth in a smaller area of the restaurant. The structure itself is best described as cozy and comfortably elegant yet not "stuffy", and not cavernous as say, Signature or Perry's at La Cantera. Marjan described the vibe as welcoming, much as an establishment where staff and the owner might know you as a frequent visitor. And in truth, we noticed that same gentleman visiting tables and chatting knowingly with some of the diners. Tables were properly dressed in white tablecloth, some booths, and some straight back chairs. The sound level was conversation comfortable, not bothered with the revelry of other diners. As we were seated at our booth, Marjan heard from the bar, the unmistakable mating call of the martini: the shoosh, shoosh of ice in the stainless steel shaker. So enticed, our first order of business was a pair of dirty vodka martinis: the liquid was excellent for those so inclined. Kudos to the mixologist!! We began our dining experience with the jumbo crab cake appetizer. This appetizer was prepared to delight, with slight sear crust, and delicate, tasty crab, served aside a pleasing remoulade sauce. Marjan's entree was the tenderloin, her preference always rare within. The finish was exactly as desired, soo tender. This dish was presented with a brown gravy over the loin, peppery in flavor, also tasty. Marjan actually prefers a mushroom, onion, garlic, secret spices and red wine sauce (her own recipe), but she was quite happy with the entree. Her dish was sided with au gratin potatoes, creamy, savory, and with sauteed vegetables. I chose the special of the day: pan seared fish. This red sea creature was cooked to perfection, and was smothered with white sauce and a platoon of baby shrimp. In truth, we thought this was one of the top fish entrees we have enjoyed. My sides were mashed potatoes and also the mentioned greens. Marjan chatted with Ryne, our waiter, over the wine list. She favors the pinot noir, and trusting his recommendation, Ryne proved he knew his wines! After dinner, I quaffed an expresso, and we shared two deserts: creme brulee and the apple crepia. The brulee was excellent (I have yet to meet a brulee I haven't fallen in love with, and this offering was no exception), but the crepia fell somewhat short of our expectations. Excellent flavour, but the bed of puff pastry we found to be not puffy, but rather flat and much too dense. Nontheless, what is our overall impression? We consider Frederick's Bistro one of our top restaurants, given the welcoming environ, the friendliness and professionalism of the staff (Ryne), and most importantly the very special preparation of their food offerings. We definitely recommend Frederick's Bistro, and look forward to our next visit. Date night? Special occasion? Give this restaurant a try! Marjan and I think you won't be disappointed! Met some friends for a quick happy hour pow-wow session. This place is awesome! The food is top-notch. I had a bite of the Parmesan Halibut and it was crunchy yet tender. So good! I ordered the beet salad.. love a good beet salad, and this one was tasty, fresh and enough of a serving to make me happy! I had a dirty martini and it was cold and smooth. Service was great, like service should be! In today's world that's BIG!! I highly recommend Frederick's Bistro for well made drinks and some of the best food in town. read more

Absolutely loved this place, loved the ambience, the service was great, but the food was just wow!

I enjoy going at happy hour, sitting at the bar and having some of their happy hour specials and drinks. Happy hour from 5:00 to 7:00. Thursday night is a good night to go. Other weekend times need reservations. The food is excellent. The clientele at the bar is an older crowd, which I like and fit into. The servers are friendly. The patrons are friendly. OMG... was our meal delicious! We came to celebrate our anniversary/Valentines day. It was a pre-fix menu. The choices were amazing! I started my dinner with Vietnamese egg rolls. My husband ordered a shrimp/octopus combo w pasta- both very delicious and a generous amount for an appetizer, then came our salads. It was a delicate mixer of greens, pecans, green apple,& berries.... delicious! I ordered the lamb chops as my main entre. I was a little worried because I don't like the "gamey taste." We've been a few times and it never really hits the mark. The decor, service and prices lead you to expect better food. It isn't in anyway bad but it just isn't great. The seafood is probably the best bet here and the wine is fairly priced. I tend to think about it as a meet-after-work for drinks and appetizers (which are good) instead of a dinner meal establishment. My sense is that the recipes are good but that sometimes the ingredients could be a bit higher quality. We've had steak twice and both times it just had little to no flavor and was a bit tough. Perhaps it was Choice? The staff is very good and attentive so no issues there at all. We never feel ignored but there is always a sense that it should have been better. read more
