Excellent food. Extraordinary service. The crabcake starter was great... mostly (all?) crab, which is unusual. It was even better than the last time we ordered it. Tonight we split the Steak For Two special. Ribeye was beautifully cooked with a lovely marinade in the bottom of the bowl. Accompanied by potatoes mousseline and creamed(?) spinach. My companion intended to order braised short ribs, but the ribeye sounded too good to skip. After, we split a lovely lemon crème brulee. It was lemony enough even for me. Last time we had chicken fried steak (not on the menu tonight) and meatloaf (ditto). Both were excellent, but sort of routine, not spectactular like tonight's dinner. My water glass never got below half-full. The staff's team approach works well. Our waiter's by-the-glass recommendations for a white wine for crabcake and red for ribeye were ideal. We like the idea of supporting a business that has eliminated tipping. They make a big deal about that. However. I read the "Our Philosophy" page 3 times tonight. That page does not mention that tip is baked into the menu price. Like last time, no staff person mentioned it. AND the credit card slip has a line for "Tip." Should I feel shame for taking them at their word and not leaving additional tip? Well, I don't. We will go back often enough to try most of the menu choices. Even though they change seasonally. I usually make it a point to avoid Chef Andrew Weissman's restaurants, as I've often found them to be heavy on hype and light on quality--especially considering the price. In fact, I had pretty much decided not to visit Max's Sister at all once I learned that the much-hyped chicken-fried steak was no longer on the menu. But when some friends invited me to join them, I figured I'd give it a shot--and, to my surprise, I had a great experience. The staff was welcoming, the service was very good, and the Cosmopolitan I ordered was excellent. For my meal, I went with the fried sweetbreads, and they were honestly some of the best I've ever had. I probably won't return, simply because fine dining isn't really my thing, but I would absolutely recommend giving Max's Sister a try while you still can. After all, it's Andrew Weissman. Once his restaurant stops generating enough buzz and attention, there's always the chance he'll abruptly close it--so you may want to get there quickly! read more

Still amazing! Skate wing! I love Skate, and it's such a rare find in San Antonio, so I was excited to see it on the menu on our last visit. PSA- it does look like they've moved away from their original concept of individual menu categories being all one price (with noted exceptions) and maybe even the livable wage structure. All items were individually priced this time, and there was no longer the "livable wage" note on the menu. Same fantastic food and service, just missing those two features that made it stand apart from other local restaurant concepts. Loved this restaurant and cant wait to go back. Went here with wife midweek because kids happened to both be out. Service here was spectacular. Very knowledgable and attentive but still laid back. This place is not cheap but also not stuffy. So good vibe. Great cocktails i had one of the special vodka cucumber ones and the wife had a reviver. Mine was great but I preferred hers. She then switched to wine which they seemed to have a decent 1 page list, mostly bottles but a few cabs and pinot by glass if i recall. We split a spinach salad which was a huge portion even for 2 people -- could easily be starter for 3-4. Salad was great very tangy. Also had the bread service which i loved but wife said she could skip. For entrees i had sweet breads which are neither sweet nor bread but were phenomenal. I can't say enough wonderful things about this restaurant. We've been wanting to try Chef Andrew Weissman's chicken fried steak since it caused such a sensation that it closed down Mr. Juicy's due to its popularity. Once Max's Sister opened it was just a matter of time to find a night we could go and get a reservation. We finally made it. From the moment we stepped in, we were taken well care of. It is a nice, small, and romantic venue, perfect for a date night or intimate dinner with friends or family. The restaurant prides itself on paying staff well so tipping is not necessary, they say, but we did. The price point if the whole menu makes it affordable for such a lovely evening. For our first, but certainly not last meal there, I had an espresso martini, and it was the best espresso martini that I have ever had a pleasure to indulge in. We had water on the table and a server brought a tray full over accoutrements including orange, lemon, lime, and cucumber slices. What a nice detail. We had the bread service because I wanted to see what citrus ash tasted like. It tasted like heaven layered on love. This smokey flavoring envelops sweet cream butter then you slather it on delicate bread. For our main course we ordered the chicken fried steak with peppercorn sauce and the beef short ribs. My husband and I shared. I thought the chicken fried steak was delectable enough but those beef short ribs were something to dream about. They were fall apart goodness and extremely flavorful. I thought I made good short ribs but I bow to Max's Sister. We rarely get dessert out but we indulged because, why not. We each got our own dessert because, again, why not. My husband had the orange cake and I had the chocolate buttermilk cake. Both excellent but my favorite was the orange cake. It was basically a pineapple upside down cake with oranges. That was lick the plate good. We will be back. We have to try "all the things." This review will be slightly biased because in my opinion chef Andrew Weissman can do no wrong. The first French inspired meal I ever tried was at Le Reve and changed my outlook on food forever. While I love Mr. Juicy, it is wonderful to see Weissman get back to what he does best at Max's Sister. A calamari was lightly battered and dressed with a honey chili oil glaze. Bread service included a butter rolled in citrus ash. The gold leaf risotto dusted in paprika was sweet and creamy topped with a parmesan crisp. My personal favorite was the cheese service, which included a trip to the beautiful cheese board that has an array of options from a Wisconsin blue to a brie that was smooth as butter. Served with apricots, local honeycomb, figs and almonds. The mood is dressy but relaxed and is the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch or celebration dinner. read more

ABSOLUTELY the best kept secret for the last three months on San Antonio's culinary landscape! Made a quick reservation and stepped into this quaint beautifully decorated and lit bistro-style space in The Alon shopping center. We were greeted with a smile by the host at the door and swiftly seated at our table. We were greeted again by two different servers before our water carafe arrived and yet another server arrived offering fresh fruit for our water. Our "actual" server arrived soon after, made introductions, and took our drink and appetizer order. We began our culinary adventure with the bread plate beautifully presented with four different portions partnered perfectly with softened butter wrapped in a layer of citrus ash. We also had a generous portion of Risotto with brown butter and aged parmigiano. Both were beautifully presented and tasted just wonderful. Our server took our entree order which, given all the tasty choices on the menu, I decided on the Sunday Supper Meatloaf accompanied by spicy carrots, fresh green beans, and potatoes mousseline. When the entree arrived, it was presented just beautifully on the plate. The carrots and green beans were perfectly prepared, and the bed of whipped potatoes were soft and creamy. Now... the shining star of the show... and honestly speaking, I don't at all say this lightly, I enjoyed every bite of what I will admit may have been the most decadent and savory and even juicy perfectly prepared portion of meat loaf I have ever had in my life. Seriously, every forkful tasted like it was the perfectly caramelized corner piece from the meatloaf pan my mother used when she made it for me when I was a kid! Worth. Every. Penny. The service? Exceptional. It's clear MS staff is passionate. Every question (there were several) was answered with sincere excitement of what is to come. There were no dumb questions, or that feeling of shame that you normally associate with a fine dining restaurant. Our water glasses never went below half way. The food? Ethereal. We tried to strike a balance between savoring every bite and refraining from swallowing the dish whole. It's clear Chef W cooks with love and passion. You can taste it in each bite. The ambiance? Clean and comfortable. Every detail felt intentional. From the ambient lighting, to the comfortable chairs. To put it simply, we did not want this meal to end. Made reservations on Resy for Sunday brunch. The restaurant is located in the Alon shopping center. It is right next to JUGO. We were seated as soon as we arrived. Water was given to us immediately. We were asked if we wanted some type of garnish for water. They had grapefruit, cucumber, lime. We were given the brunch menu, but they also had off menu specials. Arturo went over the specials and his recommendations. We started off with the crabcake, which was the best starter. It had great flavor and it was big enough to share between two of us. I ordered the pancake, but shared the Shakshuka with my mother. So, I had a sweet and savory breakfast. The Shakshuka is tomato dish with eggs. It was good, but it had too much oregano over me. It did come with two poached eggs. They were a little overdone as the yolk was not runny. It Came with the best crusty French bread. The bread was great for soaking up the sauce. The pancake was huge. It was delicious, thick, and the fruits on there made it sweet. I didn't even put any syrup on it. It did come with two slices of bacon. They do have a fullService bar. They have mimosas and bloody Mary's for brunch. I opted for a glass of Prosecco and my mother got a latte. She loved her latte. It came unsweet, but they brought out three types of sugars Everyone was super friendly from the start to the end. Arturo, our waiter, did a great job taking care of us. The place is small, but has booths and tables to accommodate all. It is quiet, so this would be a great place to meet up with friends for conversation. Date night with our favorite couple that treated us out to this new restaurant! The location is slightly hidden in the shopping center of Alon market, right next to Jugo. I started off the night with an espresso martini, which was perfect balance in flavors. For appetizers, we got the whole quail and crab cake. I enjoyed the crab cake more because there was a natural sweetness from the crab and the lemon with cream sauce was a perfect complement. Quail was also nicely cooked, but I thought the sauce was a little salty. For my entree, I got the branzino. My friend got the trout and the branzino was a much better choice, although both were good. My husband and I went in based on a recommendation from an acquaintance. We arrived for our reservation on time and were seated shortly after. Chicken fried steak was the recommended item from several reviews. As a country gal, I've had some of the best in Texas. Unfortunately, this wasn't it. The meat wasn't tender and the batter was too light in color. While it was crispy, the coating was too thick and not dark enough. The coating to meat ratio was off. Too much coating. We also ordered the lamb chops which were not cooked well. We sent them back and I'm grateful they were removed from our bill. That was generous. Unfortunately, like many of the one star reviews, the serve time was terrible. We waited an hour to get our food and we kept getting offered bread and butter. Again, that was generous but we wanted to enjoy our plates knowing the serving size from other reviews. Customer service by waiters was nice but they didn't handle any of the communication about the delay. That was all done through the manager. Disappointing. Service was somewhat awkward and food was mostly average. Trout was smothered in a super salty sauce with a couple small pieces of green bean and bell pepper on top. Reminded me of fast food Chinese. Caesar salad was also totally average. Drenched in a regular creamy dressing. Nothing special about it at all. Same for the bread. Drinks were also not great. Gazapacho amuse bouche and crab cake were the highlights. Not worth the price point. We've enjoyed other of Andrew Weissman's resturants (RIP Il Sogno) but will not be returning to Max's Sister. read more

The place is nicely decorated and the overall experience was very nice. I did think the prices were very high. Two of my friends ordered a meatloaf and a Dutch boy (which is combo between a crêpe and a pancake). In my opinion, their portions were not comparable to the price. Also, the service was very good, but two people at the table had orders additional items to share and had stated that those items were to be put on their bills. However, that is not what happened, and they were divided into all four bills. I believe that as waitstaff these details are fairly important. I had the worst dining experience EVER at a new restaurant, Max's Sister, and probably will never return. Here are the highlights. We order a drink. It tastes horrible. The salad was good. We ordered our food and after waiting an hour, it never arrives. Nobody ever comes to the table to explain what's going on or to offer us some bread or something to hold us over. After we catch our waitress, she explains the kitchen is backed up. SAY WHAT?!! For an hour? And that's not the worst of it. The manager comes to our table and says, "Well we let you come in without a reservation." Can you imagine that? They didn't say we can't serve you tonight. They seated us. Now he's blaming us (2 people) for the kitchen being backed up. Instead of apologizing and trying to make things right, he's blaming us! I paid the bill for one drink and salad - $35 - and walked out. By the way, we weren't the only ones who were waiting for our food. The people at the table across from us were angry. They waited 1 hr. and 15 minutes. And I hear the table behind us ask the waitress if their dessert is ever coming. On top of all that, we arrived at 6:30p and were told they were out of 2 entrees and 2 desserts. How in the world is this happening? Now, before you tell me the restaurant has only been open for two weeks and I should give them a chance, let me say this: If you can't serve customers the way you're supposed to, then don't open the doors. If you're going to ask me to pay, then it should be a great experience. And you should also know this restaurant isn't run by some mom and pop or a novice. This is an Andrew Weissman restaurant. He is probably the closest thing to what San Antonio can call an "acclaimed chef and restauranteur." He and his wife are there. 1st visit I made reservations and was super excited and went to the hostess and she told me she didn't have my reservation. I asked if there was anything open and was told no. I asked if I could go to the bar area and eat and they said no they don't serve food there. So I left. 2nd visit. Still excited to try I went back and asked to sit at the bar and they said they were full and didn't have room, they still had plenty of room so I was confused and just left. 3rd time, I was in the neighborhood so I went in just hoping I could order food to go, and they said they do not take To Go Orders. My wife and I had dinner at Max's Sister this past Saturday evening and had a very enjoyable night from start to finish. The ambience was relaxed but refined, and the staff set the tone immediately with thoughtful touches such as a cool, lemongrass‑infused hand towel and additions to your water -- cucumber, lime, orange, or mint -- small details that elevate the evening without feeling formal. Before our meal arrived, we were served a tasting of gazpacho that was bright and flavorful, a pleasant surprise to begin the night. My wife ordered a blackberry gimlet that was balanced and well‑made, with the gin coming through cleanly. We started with the baby spinach salad, which was large enough to share and exceptionally fresh. It included roasted red pepper, poached pear, in‑house candied croutons, freshly grated cheese, and a creamy dressing that tied everything together. For our entrées, I ordered the red snapper and seared scallop dish in saffron sauce, while my wife chose the salmon served over melted leeks. Both plates were well‑executed and appropriately portioned -- generous enough to satisfy without feeling heavy. The snapper had a crisp, well‑seasoned skin and was finished with a sprig of dill. The scallop had a golden sear with a tender center, and both were served over a smooth potato mousseline. The saffron broth was light and balanced, complementing the dish without overwhelming it. Throughout the evening, the service was attentive without being intrusive. Drinks were refilled regularly, and several staff members, including the owner, stopped by to check on us. The interactions felt genuine and added to the overall high level of service that we had been receiving throughout the evening. Pricing felt appropriate for a fine‑dining restaurant, especially considering the portion sizes, the quality of the dishes, and the complimentary tastings offered throughout the night. Had an amazing experience at Max's sister! Everything was amazing from the moment we walked in, to the door being held and warm goodbyes till we walked out. Our server, Ethan, gave us impeccable service. He let us know our table was ours for the evening and made sure we were nice and relaxed all night while providing attentive but not over bearing service through our "leisurely dinner experience" The food was absolutely decadent, from the crab cake appetizer to the short ribs I had for dinner and the branzino my wife had, it's was the best meal we've had in a while. Ethan suggested a fantastic wine to go with both our dishes -he is well versed through out the entire menus knew his wine and liquor as well. Great experience. We needed to hit HEB and stopped in to see if they had availability for lunch about 11:30 and they did. Honestly only half the place was full. Ethan was super attentive as was all the staff. Several people stopped by to check on us and see how things were going. Our meals were great and my wife loved the glaze on the meatloaf. Bread service was good, I prefer 4 of the ones will oil that were spongy next time lol. My chicken fried steak was great. It breaks my heart to give Max's Sister less than 5 stars. I've been an Andrew Weissman fan and follower since the days of Le Reve and, subsequently, Il Sogno. Cocktails first, of course. My first gripe is that they have only 2 gins: Hendricks and something called Ranch gin. Never heard of Ranch Gin and I'm not a Hendricks fan. Someone needs to tell them that there is a resurgence of interest in gin. 6 vodkas on the menu and only 2 gins? No, not working. Get some Bombay Dry or better yet Tanqueray #10 or Botanist, for heaven's sake. We can't be the only lovers of proper martinis that are going to come in the door. On to the food. We were a party of 4. Both couples split ceasar salads and they were perfect. Plenty of shaved parm on top and lightly dressed, not sloppy. My wife ordered the chicken fried steak because someone has to. It lives up to its reputation. They offer 2 sauces for the CFS and she asked for both on the side so she could compare. Both were rich, flavorful and balanced, but the green peppercorn sauce wins hands down, IMHO. The two guys at the table ordered harissa-rubbed lamb chops, medium rare. Amazing. Our friend, D, ordered the fresh caught salmon, which was seared on the outside and perfectly moist and medium inside. Accompanying veggies were al dente. I must stress that all of our food was fantastic and very much deserving of the hype this restaurant gets. Weissman still at the top of his game. Problem: After we ordered, our bread service and salads came out immediately. We ate, loving life and enjoying what was so far a near-perfect dining experience. We finished our salads and the bread and waited for the entrees. And waited. And waited. A full 35 mins, maybe 40 minutes later our entrees appeared. By then, we had consumed most of the wine we ordered. My last gripe is the noise level. Certainly, this is partly a product of the popularity, but it was definitely difficult to hear each other without leaning forward in the booth. The great lengths they have gone to in decorating could easily have included some acoustic panels high on the walls. So there it is. I love this place as I had the best Bronzino in my entire life and it was simply amazing. This is a meal befitting for a king for which I am not. Service itself also deserves 5 stars. read more

I'm a bit mixed on this place from my experience. Came on a Sunday. The one thing that was stellar was the service. Waitress was so kind and had that southern hospitality feel. Drinks were always full. All the staff seemed to really elevate the experience. The not so stellar for me was some of the food. Calamari was a little too chewy for my liking and the breading was so thick that it just falls right off the meat. Didn't care for that. Meatloaf was pretty solid, nothing spectacular. Chicken fried steak was phenomenal. Perfect meat to breading ratio, but the mashed potatoes had this extremely prevalent sour cream flavor that's all I could taste. I let them know and again the wait staff being so good they let me change it to their pan fried potatoes with rosemary which was excellent. And for dessert we got blueberry and cherry pie made in house and both were exceptional. All in all a solid experience. Will want to revisit again. read more

Went in today for a relaxing Monday evening dinner to celebrate my birthday. My husband and I had never visited and love finding a spot that has a small menu and staff that care about it. Our reservation was easy to make and the hostess was very prompt in seating us. Our server was amazing and could walk us through the menu very well. I do wish I was offered wine pairings for the menu though. Being a young couple we usually don't get amazing service but on the contrary here. We were treated so well and they were not judging a book by its cover. Had we saved room for dessert we would have ordered one but we couldn't resist fully enjoying our firsts and mains. I had a wonderful birthday and will most certainly be coming back. The atmosphere and service alone is worth experiencing, the food is full of love and care. The ribeye was a pleasant surprise and I hope we can have it again. read more

Enjoyed an outstanding brunch this Sunday at Max's Sister. The brunch menu had many options from sweet to savory. We enjoyed the gold leaf risotto, moshe's massive pancake, omelet goat cheese and ended the meal with an espresso pot au creme. Each item was executed immaculately and full of flavor. From the time we entered the restaurant and throughout the meal the level of service was superb. We truly cannot wait to come and dine at Max's Sister again following such an amazing experience. read more
