This was the largest breakfast sandwich I've ever seen at a restaurant. There was 6 pieces of bacon on this bad boy! I also ordered a side of homefries, and they were some of the best I've ever had. Used to be a great place to get breakfast and lunch. The quality has gone downhill and so has the service. The last two visits were disappointing. Greasy burnt country fried steak, burnt toast, burnt home fries, a burnt pancake, slow service and waitresses with attitudes. Fred's always was a "greasy spoon" diner but the food was great and worth the wait for a seat. Not so much now. We used to bring out of town friends and family and always recommended Fred's to others looking for a good value. Not anymore. It was a great run but we will be looking for a new diner. Fred's is exactly what I was hoping it would be. A traditional diner with good breakfast food. I just recently moved to Akron from Europe and had been looking for the traditional American breakfast experience. It was very busy and from what I understood it's always very busy. You might have to wait to be seated. There's a light up sign at the entrance that tells you if you should wait to be seated or seat yourself. Because it was just me on a Friday at 11am, I got a seat at the counter right away. Breakfast was good, exactly what I was expecting. The staff was very busy so it is a little hard to get their attention, but they were all very friendly. I haven't been to a lot of places like this and it just made me feel like I was somewhere else, which I enjoyed very much. Will go back again whenever possible. read more

This is a place I'll have no problem returning to eat! Weekends are busy but today we only had to wait long for seating. After my 5 minute wait we were seated. I ordered a water with lemon but once the air conditioner had me chilled I needed a hot chocolate to warm up. I don't think 2 minutes had went by and the waitress came out with our food. My eggs were fresh and delicious. My bacon was nice and crispy like I love it. I ordered my home fries crispy and that's exactly how I received them. When the waitress filled a Sierra Mist drink with water, she made it her duty to get a fresh new mist, I appreciated that! read more

This is a solid diner feel place that makes homemade quality breakfast. Yes the guy in the back (probably the owner) is gruff (that is being nice). He continually scowled at all of us but I'd probably say that is his normal expression rather than anything you should read into. This is a converted house but done well. It was completely packed when we got there around 11am on a Saturday. But two counter spaces opened up in about 10 minutes. I had the biscuits and gravy and my wife had the chicken fried steak. Both were exceptional especially because of the sausage gravy. It was creamy with chunks of real sausage and a great peppery flavor. The biscuits were great on their own and the chicken fried steak was outstanding. Fred's is my kind of place. It's small, homey food, great prices, simple fare. Their motto is "Eat, Pay, Get Out" and they make that easy to do. It gets busy and packed most days, so you might have to wait (or maybe don't go there so that I don't have to wait when I do ;-) We mostly have gone for breakfast, but lunch food is great too. One of my all time favorite breakfast places to eat in Akron. The only thing is that there is very little space but other than that, it is great. It may not be the most appealing places because the decor is a bit old but the food is amazing. Their proportion sizes are so worth it and the prices are more than reasonable. M- Here is Akron Ohio at its best. The decorator and clientele is not the attraction. It's the days of to much food and a common crowd. I think it still reaches out and touches the rubbershop days. It's a nice old-fashioned type diner. We went on a Saturday morning and had to wait about ten minutes for a table. Service was a little slow, but that was understandable since it was a busy morning. Typical diner breakfast, nothing fancy. About $7 for a three egg omelet with hash browns and toast. They also serve pancakes the size of a dinner plate! One tends to forget the importance of waitstaff in having a favorable dining experience. Breakfast is when this tends to crystalize the most for me, as my dining companion tends to like things prepared in polar opposite to my own preferences. She wants underdone toast and potatoes and I want them just this side of burnt. Usually this means either neither of us is satisfied or they come out just short of uncooked. My surmise is that lazy waitstaff are as much to blame as is the chef/cook. Here they actualy listen and deliver. To steal a slogan, how "uncommonly good!" This place is breakfast and lunch only They have a ton of regulars, and they are frequently called by name by the waitstaff. Where does this happen that isn 't situated in a sit-com? They don't stand on ceremony, but they make sure your coffee cup is full and that you like your food, and it's communal serving here, the person that takes your order may not be the one that pours your coffee or gets your hotsauce, but they all do so with penache! No grumbling or muttering or looks like "this ain't my job", just "Charlie Hustle" type service from any waitstaff at hand, without being hailed by the diner! Kudos Fred, on having a great staff and keeping them! The food is simple diner fare, and somewhat limited when compared to other diners, but what they do is done well. Spouse got bacon and eggs underdone potatoes and underdone rye. I got steak and eggs with almost burnt potatoes and rye. Just as we ordered. One coffee one decaf. Tons of bacon, for the wife, and the steak.....how do I express this? It was good! Excellent in fact! And of decent size! It wasn't surrounded by fat and gristle and sinew and tendon or hoof like most breakfast steaks served in almostanyrestaurantinamericaincluding4and5starsones! I was actually dumbfounded! It cut easily. Without a steak knife! I didn't face that uncomfortable moment one oft experiences when one realizes that what is in one's mouth was not intended for consumption by one's dog, let alone oneself! And there's that awkward disposal moment that I didn't have to experience! You know, The one where etiquette books suggest placing one's empty fork in one's mouth and deftly placing the offending item on the fork with one's tongue and then placing it demurely on the corner of one's plate or in one's napkin, (if one is disinclined to reuse it!), while simultaneously calling the table's attention to the fact that Madonna just walked by the front window of the restaurant in short-shorts to dissuade one's companion's eyes from the event! This is the first time I can recollect not having to experience the above, and occassionally I find myself amazed that any restaurant would serve as steak, some of the crap-on-a-plate I've been served. NEVER have I been asked elsewhere if a breakfast steak was "to my liking", and with DAMN good cause! When I didn't have sufficient appetite to finish my most excellent steak, I was asked by several passing waitstaff as to it's suitability...they actually cared if the steak was done to my liking, etc.! And it wasn't feigned! And hearty portions! In fact, there was so much bacon, (properly uniformly crisply done, not half-raw fatty looking chewy stuff), on my wife's plate that she shared a piece or two at breakfast, ate some and we took home 3 or 4 strips after she dined along with potatoes and toast for second breakfast later that day! Waitresses who served me here 10 years ago were still happily pouring coffee and hustling meals to tables at this visit! Here's the kicker. I used a coupon from the Entertainment Book for up to $6 off, but the lady's meal didn't cap out over six bucks, and nonetheless the bill before tip came to under $9!!! I've died and gone to heaven! Yeah, it's a hole in the wall, and yeah, the mini-sidestreet that separates it's parking areas was used in WWll as a tank-trap for military maneuvers, but it's now MY hole in the wall and I love it! Good breakfast and tasty pancake. Not a great looking place on the inside and looks like rural gas station from the outside. The restaurant is hidden on a street with nothing else around beside industrial buildings. This diner seems to be locals' favorite. The staff call customers by name as they walk in. We found this little place on Yelp. They were given a good recommendation so we thought we'd try. It was full when we arrived. There is no where to hang out so you feel like you are in the way. The wait staff is extremely friendly. Different women kept coming by and saying that a table would open up soon. We could see it would be a while so as soon as 4 seats opened at the counter we took them. We had omelettes, waffles, French toast, home fries, sausage gravy and biscuits. The only complaint was the home fries. They were a mix between a home fry and a mashed potato and didn't have much taste. We all wanted breakfast but the menu was full and so were the plates that came out around us. The special this day was pot roast and it looked awesome. We will go back again. Ate here over the weekend and was intrigued because they made Fox 8's HOTLIST for breakfast. Upon arrival my boyfriend and I waited about 10 minutes, the whole restaurant is first come, first serve, and seat yourself. It was our first time and we didn't know this, so at first we were confused, but we figured it out. The restaurant is very small but you still somehow feel like you have room. Their motto: eat pay leave, isn't very welcoming, but it is what it is. The food was decent and I'll leave it at that. The home fries I got were not cooked through and were burned on the outside, they were literally gross! I requested my eggs over hard and they were covered in hard skin which forms when you over cook eggs and try to cook them fast. The sausage was decent and the waffle was huge and delicious. One of the biggest problems was that because of their fast service, eat pay leave motto, we weren't tended to and no one refilled our water, we got up and asked to have it done. You get your bill when your meal is brought out and you pay at the bar counter when you leave. I left an overly generous tip, but that's because they all split the tips left. You'll also notice multiple people help you at your table, not just one server. Overall it was okay, I'll go back but won't make a special trip and I'll only order a waffle and sausage links. My boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed his sausage biscuits and gravy and side of bacon, however, they were very skimpy with the amount of sausage in the gravy. read more
