Staff was attentive, funny & had all worked there for years so there was a comfortable, close feeling as well as fast, great service & these ladies know what they're doing. Small 70s decor diner on side of road. We had 2 different servers. Both hasty, rushing us and rude. we noticed they offered this "charm" to other customers as well. I guess it is eat and leave so they can get more people seated and served. Typically I prefer a leisure coffee over a meal. prices on the high end. portions generous and average in quality/taste. we travel extensively and shoot for small diners. this one was a one and done. Fred's has the best potatoes I have ever had. Ever. If you take anything away from this review, it's to try the homefries at Fred's. On a whim, my boyfriend and I decided to try this place instead of our usual breakfast spot. While Fred's was appropriately busy on a Sunday morning at 10 AM, they still found a place to seat us right away. I was shocked at how big the actual space is. There isn't a lot of parking and the building looks teeny-tiny but, boy, there's a ton of seating on the inside. Close seating, but seating nonetheless. In fact, being in such close proximity to everyone and in a space decorated similar to your grandma's house only benefitted the experience. Diners talked to other diners, from other parties. It was a cool experience to have. I'm definitely heading back to Fred's. This little spot was way more impressive than any chain breakfast or fancy brunch spot I've been to before. I've heard many great stories about this place but I don't find myself in this area often even though I live in Akron. On this certain day though, I happened to be in the area as I had a work site nearby. This was a no brained for lunch. My two other coworkers have been here before and raves about it so it had to be good. The place is kind of a dive and it was a real "old" feel to it. I ordered the country fried steak while my coworkers had the beef brisket special. It's nothing mind blowing but it's not Applebee's bad. A great home style cooked meal for sure. Yelped out this place for a quick breakfast stop. Off the beaten path a little bit. A cute little building that sits by itself. Wouldn't think it'd be an old school diner by the looks of it. Super cute inside. We were vocally greeted by the entire staff as we walked in. Sat at the bar, immediately was poured hot coffee. Perfect. Ended up ordering the #2. Eggs over medium, crispy bacon, crispy hashbrowns (added cheese) and wheat toast. I really hate to leave just a blah food review buuuuut I've definitely ate a lot of "proper" breakfasts in my lifetime and well, this was in the bottom 5 :( Bacon was wimpy, hashbrowns were burnt and the eggs were over cooked. They ended up getting extremely busy and the staff was so nice I didn't want to complain. Had I said something I'm sure it would've been immediately fixed. You could hear the owner (Fred) in the kitchen yelling out the orders as they came in, which I thought was really cool. Just in the half hour we sat there I think about 25 to-go orders rang in and the inside filled up quickly so I know this diner is better than what my plate presented. Started up by Fred Spencer well over 20 years ago Fred's has been a local fan favorite that keeps Akronites coming back for more. The diner is located at 930 Home Ave not to far off Rt 8 so finding it shouldn't be a issue. Fred's serves the typical diner foods such as burgers, chicken sandwiches, croissant sandwiches and the not so typical specialty sandwiches like the tasty YO Meatball sub or perhaps you'd prefer a Hillbilly Philly samich. NOW the breakfast eats are why I come to this local iconic diner and it's served allll day long! Fred's hasn't really changed a whole lot over time but as the old saying goes... if it ain't broke don't fix it. Fred's just proves you don't have to be on the cutting edge or be trendy to make fantastic eats. Keeping it simple sometimes just works. So I am going to say the only negative thing I can say about this place first because it is my own personal opinion but will not affect my decision for the full 5 stars I gave it. The home fries need more crisp. Unlike the man behind us I am not going to complain that the bacon is not crispy enough. Anymore crispy and that bacon would be inedible in my book. Ok now onwards because what is not to love about diner food? Country fried steak amazing. Sausage gravy and biscuits all great. So many choices for toast. Personally I like rye bread and it was perfect with the smuckers orange marmalade. Bacon and eggs are all tasty. Service was excellent. Was so happy to finally get in this small place and eat. On a Sunday morning we had a little bit of a wait, but as other reviews state, Freds likes you to eat pay & get out so tables open up quickly. The food: GREAT. We only had breakfast, but it was some of the best breakfast in Akron. #3 corned hash, potatoes, eggs & toast #11 kielbasa, eggs, potatoes & toast. I've read that people didn't think the potatoes were flavorful, but you can get almost anything you want added to them (and I think it's free)! The service: all of the servers work together to make your experience a great one. Your drinks are always full & you order just as quickly as your food comes. Heading down to Akron yesterday morning (Saturday 10am) & hungry. Wife found this place on Yelp, not far off Rt8 & always being up for a new place to try. Nothing to look at from the outside, except a lot of vehicles & thinking building isn't big enough. Packed house inside the door, couple single seats at the counter, people waiting for carry out. Waitress walking by says "table for 2 in back hallway" okay, followed her back to another room. 7-8 tables with 3 tables open, perfect... Breakfast menu served all day & you order by line number. We had country fried steak & pancakes w/bacon & a side of sourdough toast. Food came quick & looked great (2 of 3 pancakes were little dark/charred, not golden like the one) but the heaping side of crispy bacon was impressive. The eggs were ordered "up" & cooked perfectly, country fried steak was very tasty but not a very big piece & home fries were hearty. Bonus for me was the blackberry jam in the jelly caddie on table, it's the little things in life. We never saw Theresa again, after she brought out the side of toast. Refill of water would have been nice, small glasses to start with. Fred's is one of those hole in the wall joints that you walk into and everyone seems to know one another. The portions are large and the prices low. I had the country fried steak which lately seems to be what I'm ordering everywhere for breakfast. Must be a phase. Anyway, it was huge and smothered in sausage gravy. The home fries are like a baked potato sliced and fried. If I'd had room, I might have asked for some butter and sour cream. The cook accidentally popped one of my egg yolks which I barely noticed but he sent out an extra egg to make up for it. Lol. I thought it was really nice that he noticed. Visiting Akron for the weekend we were looking for local places to have breakfast that also had a variety of other menu choices. When arriving at Fred's, I noticed there was no waitlist per se and It was truly a diner experience. While there were 8 or so in front of us, the wait was relatively short. Immediately upon sitting we were seen and our orders were taken soon after. I ordered the "off the menu" version of the #11 (with salmon instead of the steak). Food was out very quickly and was smoking hot :) the homefries were cooked just right and they had a large selection of jams and jellies. My friend had the French toast which I also tried and it was cooked just right. Overall, this was a great find tucked away in a small diner. My boss decided to take us to lunch to Fred's Diner! I checked out reviews before we went and was pleased to see so many positive comments, other than some diner complaining the server dropped her straw "rudely" on the table, lol. Well, I definitely wasn't disappointed!! I had the country fried steak which was excellent! Smothered in sausage gravy, and nice and crisp when you bite into it...soooo goood! The home fries were really good too, even though I was too full to finish all of it! Very generous portions and the price for the amount of food you get is outstanding!! Next time I'll try the dumpling soup which I heard was really good! It'll definitely be a go-to place for great comfort food for me! For others that come to Fred's, the diner is pretty small, maybe 50 people I'd guesstimate, so be prepared to wait if they're busy! Came with free coffee during happy hour (6am-9am daily). The total was just over 7 bucks. And when they say bacon, they mean it. I had 8 or 10 strips of crispy bacon on that plate, with my 2 eggs cooked to order, a pile of hash browns, and a couple slices of toast with jelly. A huge meal for the money, and very tasty. It's a bit divey looking, but don't let that fool you; if you're looking for a good hearty breakfast, you won't do better in the Akron area than Fred's Diner! read more

Simply the best diner food in the Akron area. A wonderful coffeeshop vibe with regulars of all walks of life who know a good meal at a great value. The place looks a bit like a shuttered gas station from the road, but the lot full of cars lets you know you're in the right place. Fred's is basically your bare bones diner. The food is decent but it's diner food so it's never going to be exceptional or blow you away. I went went with the bacon cheeseburger. It had TONS of bacon. A bit too much honestly but it was a decent burger. It came with potato chips and a dill pickle. Again, decent. Nothing special. I see all the 5 star reviews but I just don't think a traditional diner with this type of food deserves 5 stars. It's decent food but it's not life changing. read more
