As a patron who has been to Fred's on several occasions, I highly recommend it. I always have a lovely experience with Henry behind the bar due to his incredible hospitality, humor, and kindness! I will also say the manager Tracy is very kind and attentive to customer's needs if I ever have concern. Henry makes excellent drinks and will make whatever you request. After a day of working with some colleagues, they invited me to have a drink @ Fred's and similar to the show "Cheers" everyone knew their names. Fred's authentically feels like that atmosphere and the staff demonstrates that level of personal interaction with everyone. I was new to the establishment and I left feeling like on my return they just might know my name also. I had a really nice time and the food was even better. As a first-timer I was given a few suggestions of what I absolutely had to try first. With several suggestions it was a little difficult to decided. I went with Buffalo Chicken Mac n Cheese and we shared some Mussels. I washed it down with an individual Rosé. The Mac n Cheese surprised my taste buds. It wasn't the basic Mac n cheese with some chicken and hot sauce thrown on top. It was well prepared and thoroughly mixed with the right amount of spice, baked in an individual ramekin with a side salad. The mussels were just as good, with a generous portion and a large thick slice of crusty bread to soak up all the flavorful juices. This was a nice stop at the end of a Sunday Hustle and I just might become a regular also because my return is inevitable. Just A Note: This place has gone to the Dogs... literally! Fred's walls are covered by framed pictures of dogs many from the same upper westside neighborhood. That might have something to do with its 4 legged namesake. read more

I do not understand why this place has such good reviews, I found the food to be extremely underwhelming. Also there needs to be serious improvements when it comes to keeping the restaurant utensils clean. A few times I had to ask for either a new spoon or a new glass because food crumbs were stuck to it. We came here yesterday evening, and considering there are less tables now, we did not wait too long to be seated. Unfortunately we were seated down a ramp towards the cellar, if that's how I could describe it? We were definitely secluded and able to social distance, but it was kinda uncomfortable and damp in that area. I will say that the manager (or at least who I believe to be the manager) was walking around to each table to check on each customer. He was very friendly, but sadly reviews are not based on service alone. The waitress recommended the beet gazpacho, which I was super excited to try because I love beets! The gazpacho tasted like soupy cold ketchup and oil, not gazpacho. We shared the nachos and mozzarella sticks. I liked that the nachos had lots of black beans and a decent amount of jalapeños, but everything on the plate seemed under seasoned. The mozzarella sticks had a strange breading and it was distracting from the taste of the mozzarella cheese. A lot of work needs to be done on the food here. The manager thanked us when we left, which I really do appreciate a lot, and our waitress was lovely, but that isn't enough to pull me in for a second trip. read more

Fred's is close to where I work on the UWS and is often busy when I walk by. I've popped in a couple of times with some friends for dinner, and have found it is a laid back spot where customers and staff alike are having a real fun time. I'm not usually one for trivia, but we happened to come in on a Monday the first time we tried Fred's, and ended up having a really enjoying myself. We shared a bunch of items, but the southwest chicken and black bean bowl, buffalo mac & cheese, and wings stood out above all. Plenty of outdoor seating for post-Covid quarantine, paper menus, waiters were all wearing masks and attentive. Got seated within 5 minutes for Sunday brunch around 11-12. Came here for brunch - large portions and we also grabbed frozen margaritas- definitely didn't skimp one the rum. For 2 it was around $60 with tax and tip. The place seems to be going through some construction inside so just be careful if you ever use the bathroom. I was there this past weekend with a friend and noticed a blonde hair woman who might be a manager, berating/yelling at her employees. This is unprofessional, especially in front of customers. In addition, a "manager" speaking to an employee like that is not someone who should be managing at all. The way she yelled at these employees was as if she was yelling at her own children. She needs to find a different job or find a different career path that does not involve managing or working with people. We had a horrible experience at Fred's last night. They were understaffed in their kitchen on a night that they told us they wouldn't be taking reservations because it would be busy (so you would think they'd be prepared). We got a table, but waited a whole hour and a half before getting our food. Some of the cocktails were watered down and the burger came without the toppings we asked for, and was cooked medium instead of well-done like we asked. What can I say, 5 star experience. I set up a surprise birthday party on Christmas Eve with 12 people for my wife at Fred's and their hospitality/food/atmosphere was brilliant. We live around the corner and have been to Fred's so many times over the 2 years we've lived in the neighborhood. The owner and all of his incredible staff make the experience what it is. First time here at Fred's, the reviews that brought us here left out a few details . First the location is Prime and easy to find , second it's got a great mixture large and small tables and a very cozy bar. Everyone that greeted us were friendly and polite . The plates we ordered were the Chicken Parmesan plate and the Crab cakes plate. The sour dough bread was great and was served with ample real butter . Our soup was the butternut quash soup, served hot and very flavorful. House salad was also served fresh and crisp . The restaurant has been here 20 years and serves as a handful of Locals hot spots. If you love dogs you HAVE to come here. There are photos of dogs all over the restaurant which is super cute and different. I was with three of my friends and we initially sat outside ; since it started raining we moved inside. The waitress outside was way friendlier than the one inside, which is why this place didn't get five stars. I ordered the french toast but was a little over whelmed by all of the cinnamon. Had a nice birthday brunch with two dear friends this past Saturday afternoon. Two for one drinks, and I was delighted that there was more than one vegan option. We were staying nearby and we had my 8 year old step daughter with us and online said it was family friendly and walking distance. So we went. Cute place, but the food was not good at all. When I say I am a simple eater and can be happy with a basic PB&J, that's the kind of girl I am. My pasta dish was super bland, my Step daughters Mac n cheese was sour and almost curdled tasting. The nachos were good though. BUT I have been getting sick since about 10 hours after leaving there and have been so sick all day today. Now I can't say it was from here, I did eat earlier in the day but felt fine up until we went here. We are super disappointed as there are so many places we could have gone and chose here. Truth be told everywhere was packed so the sole reason we stopped here was because they had a free table. What a shame. From the start the waitress was snarky, and not in a charming way. More in an everything that was asked of her was a visible problem way. In her defense she appeared to be the only person waiting on tables but that shouldn't be the customer's problem. And having waited tables, you deal with it. My wife ordered a salad and although nothing memorable, it wasn't terrible. High praise indeed. I however ordered the three egg omelet and that was at best, lousy. It's pretty hard to screw up eggs but this effort was low rent diner quality. Not a $50 lunch quality. Cheap diced ham and greasy onions wrapped in a barely cooked egg wrapper. And I'm still trying to figure out wtf the "hash brown" substance alongside the eggs was. The dish did not come with toast so I ordered a side. A charge for this but that's not uncommon. However for the extra charge it should not come out ice cold. When I mentioned this to the waitress she said "I hate when that happens". A real professional. Cheap, so cheap, and the white wine butter sauce positively decadent. Good flavor, and probably 18 or 20 mussels for 9 bucks from 5 to 7. The cheap wine (7) was fine. Charming inside: old school wood bar. Regulars, from what I could tell. Adorable pictures of cats in the ladies' room. And the outdoor seating area really is darling. I was walking back from DOROT (E 85th) where I volunteer at least twice a month and saw the HH board with cheap food. They also have Mexican dishes (nachos, quesadillas). First of all I just want to say that if you want to feel lied to, then Fred's is the place for you! It's a big statement to say that you have the best mac and cheese in the UWS. I have never been betrayed by mac and cheese before, especially one with all this praise. Came here for brunch around 10:30 on a Saturday morning and my friend and I were seated immediately. This family-friendly restaurant has photos of dogs all over the walls -- but it's fun, not creepy. I got the spinach, mushroom, and goat cheese omelet, which comes with a side salad and breakfast potatoes. It was delicious!! The omelet was well cooked and a good thickness, with a well balanced proportion of filling to egg. I had dinner with two other people, and we all agreed that it was seriously sub-par and--even if the food had been decently prepared--overpriced. The mac 'n' cheese which used to be creamy and flavorful beneath a perfectly golden, crispy cap, is now bland and no better than Kraft from a box. When my so-called crispy tofu salad arrived drenched in dressing, our server kindly offered to bring me the same with dressing on the side, but sadly, the dressing was the only element of the salad with any flavor. The rest of the bowl--which used to be full of satisfyingly crispy veggies and tofu--has absolutely no flavor and very little crunch.
