Cute neighborhood gem. Best macaroni & cheese you'll ever have! We used to live nearby and I still come back when I'm in the city!

Came here while looking for a dog friendly restaurant and it sure is! My friends and I arrived with 2 dogs, a party of 3 humans and was seated immediately even though the place looked packed. We were seated outdoors (of course) and our dogs were given ice cold water on a hot day (priorities!). Our waiter was very nice and gave us a few minutes to decided what we wanted to eat. We ended up ordering pancakes, steak and a burger. When we got our food, the steak wasn't good well enough so we asked our waiter if they could cook it a bit more and they kindly agreed. My burger was delicious, I just couldn't eat it altogether because I had a dog with me so it was more difficult. The fries were good, but more on the salty side. The steak was juicy and tender and the pancakes were amazing! Our total was about $55. This restaurant was a block away from an ice cream place which is a bonus if you want dessert! read more

Freds Doggy Restaurant is woofing good! I went here for weekend brunch after hearing raving reviews from friends and it lived up to the hype! When walking down into this basement restaurant you end up in the bar which has a lot of seating for waiting for a table which is great. There were doggy pictures everywhere which gave us something to look laugh about while we waited. Luckily when we got there we only had a few groups in front of us and we were seated in 10 mins! We walked through the maiming dinning area into a smaller side room which would be perfect for a large group reservation. We both ordered off the Prix fixe brunch menu. I got the crab Benedict after hearing the stellar recommendation from the waiter and she got artichoke, sun dried tomatos, and gruyere cheese omelette, and mimosas and I got the hot coffee and she got the cold. It also came with a basket of muffins with strawberry creme butter this was a great touch they were good and to have it with the strong delicious coffee while I waited for my meal was great. For the main courses the crab Benedict was amazing! The crab cakes were made perfectly because they did not have to much breaking like most places make it. HORRIBLE! From the service to the food. we went last night the server outside was huffing and puffing and wanted to be anywhere but there. We weren't even served , so we went inside (2pp) and were told they only have tables for 4. What! seat us at a table for 4 then. It was a whole ordeal but they finally did. The food here is delicious and scrumptious. My family is friends with some of the workers, and it's always a pleasure to say hi when we eat here. The service is overall great. The workers are nice, and the ambiance is perfect. I hate restaurants that are crowded with noise, but the noise level at Fred's is perfect. Saturday brunch Pros: Walked in on a busy hour, we were seated right away. Nice staff. Attentive service. Good food, I recommend the breakfast sandwich. Reasonable price. This once-great UWS bar and restaurant is suddenly going downhill fast. All the great pre-Covid bartenders and wait staff are gone and the kitchen is now slow and mistake-ridden. Apparently there's a new owner and it shows in the worst way. A regular said the new owner took over Good Enough to Eat a few years ago after it moved to Columbus Ave and we all know what a disaster that became. Sad. read more

Not a bad spot to grab a bite and have a drink on the UWS. Long time mainstay in the area that can also get pretty packed for brunch on the weekends. Attentive and friendly service. Happy hour food and drink specials throughout the week. Outside seating is always a plus especially during nice weather. The inside walls are filled with pictures of dogs, well because, dogs rule. The kind of place to have a cold brew and some fattening comfort food to fill your belly. The food here won't wow you but if you're looking for a laid back vibe it does the trick. Cute diveish bar. Picture frames of dogs everywhere. Once you walk in it's 1st floor basement level. Service was great. We got there around 11am place wasn't too crowded they were have a 2for 1 special on mimosas, bloodies. I really wanted to try their famous French toast from orwashers bakery(love the sour dough bread here). I didn't want a hug portion and waitress said we were able to order from the kids menu! I was so happy because it was just enough- 2 pieces (technically one cut in half) I was not disappointed it was full of flavor, cinnamon and raisins I could barely taste raisins good thing because I don't like them. My friend got the pancakes - said they were delicious. The mimosas were mostly champagne with hint of OJ lol. Place got a lot more crowded as we were about to leave. read more

I've always wanted to come to this UWS restaurant after walking by and seeing everyone eating out on the patio. Finally went today, and it didn't disappoint! From the moment we asked for a table, all through the end of our meal the service was 10/10 which is so hard to find in Manhattan. We came with our two dogs and asked to be seated outside. The owner personally was welcoming everyone, and you could tell all the locals frequent here for their Sunday brunch. He got us a table for 4 pretty quickly and it was directly in the sun, so the staff brought out an umbrella to give us shade (already liked this place!) They gave us these little breakfast biscuits with strawberry butter to start off and everyone loved them. I got the huevos rancheros, my husband got the turkey club and we all were really happy with our orders Overall incredible service, great food, and the location is right on Amsterdam so we got to see all the pups walking by. A definite great place to take a friend who is visiting NYC to show how locals live! Will definitely be coming back! I think this may be my new favorite brunch spot in upper west now :) read more

Came here on a lunch break at work. Was looking for some french toast and was guided to Fred's. I ordered the French Toast brunch price fix. This meal consisted of a Bellini, three mini muffins and the French Toast. The Bellini was good as expected. The muffins felt like they were store bought and did not seem fresh upon eating. The French Toast has potential to be good if the chef was more consistent in cooking the toast. Some pieces of the toast were excellent and some were burnt. read more

This place was amazing. Loved the food, the atmosphere, the service, etc. My friend and I stopped by last night for a quick bite since we saw so many people sitting inside which is usually a good sign. We were quickly seated and ordered drinks. I ordered the sangria and my friend ordered the martini. The sangria was decent but the martini was amazing! For food we ordered the buffalo Mac and cheese with some add-ons and the meatball pasta. Both were fantastic. We were adequately stuffed at the end. My friend also decided to order another drink: the 83 and Amsterdam. Incredibly strong and worth your money. I will definitely come back and try some other stuff! read more

Immobulus! Good dog Fred. An American restaurant/bar that sits in the Upper West Side which opens late and contains a full-service bar. Thursday night out in town for an early birthday celebration with a friend, who I vented my recent debacle of a volatility for another constructive abandonment ("Tina, you're a great girl but we were not properly matched") from my stoic and apatheic poet husband. The bar tender was able to concoct "Between the Sheets" cocktail based on "American Bar" by Charles Schumann, although they used house brandy rather than the renowned Cognac as I was happy of the concoction. If you supply the receipe or instructions, Fred will concoct it as it is indeed a full-service bar! Good dog Fred. My dinner entrée of Chicken Marsala at $16.95 was one of my favorites which was prepared just perfect in the consistency of the marsala wine sauce. The Chicken Marsala sat with fresh veggies of zucchini, broccoli, mushrooms, and mashed potatos. Ayia, Repello Mushroomtum, mashed potatos and zuchhini! I'm not a big fan of either these veggies although I was hoping for asparagus, carrots, or even red peppers as none were avail. The Apple Berry Crisp with vanilla gelato at $7.95 was swimming in cranberries and cranberry sauce, NOT apples thus four stars. The wait staff does not sing happy birthday during dessert course although they put a single candle for one's party to sing to the honored guest, thus four stars. Dog photos and paintings adorn the walls while dinning tables and chairs rustic with very dim lighting sets the atmosphere for dining. I'm a cat person so dogs does not entice my heart. read more

I was recommended this place by a random regular visiting a bar across the street when I first moved here. Glad that happened because I walked past this place a bunch not realizing there was a nice cozy bar inside. Loved everything about it since, from all the cute dog pictures that fill up every wall, to the very friendly/welcoming bartenders and regulars that visit frequently, to the awesome food and drink selection. They have a small but solid beer selection. Every food item I tried has been excellent. Highly recommend their Mac&Cheese, steak, or meatloaf. Carrie, Matt, and Patrick are amazing bartenders. They contribute a ton to the friendly, fun, and welcoming atmosphere of this place. I feel this place is a very unique and special place to visit and highly recommend. When you start feeling the same you can also make your mark by giving them a framed picture of your dog to hang on the wall (ask for for dimensions of pic and requirements). Even cute and cuddly picutes of dogs on the wall can't act as a saving grace for this restaurant. If you want to pay for lousy food and be patronized by the waiting staff, look no further. Let me explain. The roots of this restaurant is the only redeeming aspect. Named after a cute black lab named Fred bred at Guiding eyes for the blind, you would think that this place would live up to such humble beginnings. Unfortunately, it falls well short. A few folks in our party (party of 6) ordered the Fred Burger which was a 8 oz. beef patty cooked to your liking. When it came out, it looked ok, but it was seriously lacking in flavor. You would think for a $16 dollar Burger, it would be better. Not to mention the fact that the sweet potato fries (+1 dollar charge) were rather limp and tasted old. The cherry on top of this terrible tasting shake came at the end when we asked the waiter very kindly to split our bill 3 ways. Upon asking the question, it became apparent that we committed what is the equivalent to a major crime. The waiter acted so inconvenienced and shook his ahead as he walked away. He also made some patronizing remarks to some of our follow up questions. His reaction was inappropriate and completely unprofessional. If I was a restaurant owner, I would be ashamed to have this individual on staff. Especially if that is how he treats customers who have been respectful. He was so irritated, he had some else close out our bill. I would not recommend coming here due to the poor customer service and lousy food. I can't believe this place has been here since 1997. I came here around 10/11am on a Sunday and there was no wait. We were seated immediately. Our server was super nice and attentive. She looks like Cardi B! I got the broccoli, sausage omelette and a bloody mary. My bf got french toast and my friend got the eggs benedict. I liked my omelette. It wasn't amazing but it wasn't bad. The potatoes with it was good except I couldn't eat it because of my keto diet. My bf liked his french toast. Soft and flavorful. My friend said her eggs benedict was just okay. It looked really pretty! This place is good to eat at but not a place I would return to. It just doesn't has anything spectacular about it. read more

Came to this location on a Thursday night for late night dinner. Upon entry, you are greeted with a warm welcome and have the option to sit by the bar. We opted for a more formal area which they have towards the back. The atmosphere is very cute and home-like. Service Our waiter was Henry and he was nothing short of AMAZING! He was knowledgeable about menu items, gave honest recommendations, and was very attentive. His personality made the experience more enjoyable and most if not all of the stars in this review are because of his excellent service. Food This was a hit and miss. We ordered sweet potato fries and they were soggy. I think they may be hand cut in store which can sometimes be difficult to get to crisp up. I ordered calamari which was not burnt, but had a burnt taste to it. The buffalo wings I ordered however were good. A friend ordered the lobster ravioli which was SO good. I think that was my favorite part of the meal...and it was not even my dish! If you dine here, that ravioli is a must. Based on the service and some of the food options being good, I would give this place another try. It is a calm environment (or maybe we went at the perfect time) with a very comfy feel. read more

I ate dinner at Fred's the other night and must say I had a terrific experience. Bartender, Kerry, was great, we had a wonderful conversation while I had a few drinks. Also, had the steak dinner, was quite pleasantly surprised at how reasonably priced it was given its quality. Honestly, the only negative was the bar could use a little updating, but in some ways that gives it more character. I would recommend both the food and Kerry the bartender, what was intended to be a quick stop for dinner ended up being a really nice evening. read more

Since moving to UWS just over a year ago, Fred's quickly became one of my go-to spots. Partially because of the ambiance but mostly because of one bartender in particular. Matt was and is one of the most welcoming, kind, attentive and lovely people I have ever met. I myself have experienced him pause a conversation mid-sentence dozens of times to make sure everyone's drinks were full, a check was dropped off or just to see if everyone was doing alright. It's very very disappointing to see the ownership and management of this establishment take him away from the community to serve their own egos. I will no longer be returning to Fred's. read more

The good news is that Fred's is a nice spot to sit outdoors and watch the ambient life on Amsterdam Avenue. The staff is prompt and friendly. The sad news is that the drinks are weak, the negroni with little gin it and the margarita tasting of lime juice concentrate. The guacamole and chips, which everyone else also seemed to be ordering around five o'clock, came with green mash that tasted only of avocado, what seemed to be salsa from a jar, and tortilla chips that resembled yellow-beige quilted crackers. No need to second guess your decision to dine at this established neighborhood restaurant! Yes, it is in tradition and went through an ownership change. But perhaps it needed that and some reviews below may just be the backlash. The truth is it is a great place with great food and great management that will rise above the negative and move forward into success and making people full and happy. Trivia night is an added delight as well as the themed come, sit, stay environment with so many photos of dogs throughout the restaurant from all over the world. Fred's can only get better with new ownership and the several years experience with other successful awesome establishments of the great upper west side. Legit! Go hungry! read more

Fred's was decent but nothing exceptional. They have a lot of outdoor seating and a pub like interior that's quite charming but the staff doesn't wear masks, proof of vaccination is not required (we were not asked to show anything and we ate inside) and the tables are tightly packed. Felt like a Covid Petrie dish. That aside, My main issue is really that the food is just ok for what they charge. It's very overpriced. It's standard pub and breakfast food at best- not sure what you are paying for. It wasn't bad though and the place had a lot of character. Just wouldn't come back. read more

I dined at Fred's while visiting a friend who lives in the neighborhood. We had a good time and the food was yummy, but the service was extremely slow and we were sat in what felt like a hidden back corner. Despite the slowness, the servers were very kind and we were even given free chips and guacamole because of how long everything was taking.
