Took the family to The Grand Feast yesterday to celebrate my birthday. Just the four of us. I did not tell the restaurant that it was my birthday, because I prefer things low key. We had originally wanted to go to Jacob's Pickles on the UWS, but surprise, no reservations available. I decided to find a new place in the general neighborhood, and I saw that the Yelp and Google reviews for TGF were uniformly excellent. So we gave it a try. The photos online are very flattering... IRL, the vibe comes closer to "hole in the wall" than upscale casual dining. There are only about 40 seats maximum in the whole restaurant. The kitchen is tiny- they could only handle one table at a time, although to be fair, we didn't have to wait very long for our order to be ready. But in retrospect, I understand why they maintain such appearances... because the food at The Grand Feast is so freakin' great, if they made the decor any more attractive, they would have lines down the block and there would be no way for the kitchen to keep up. The wait staff could not have been nicer or more attentive. Menu was varied and interesting and reasonably priced. Portions were generous. We started with a mushroom truffle risotto and Caesar salad, which we shared around the table. Both were delicious. The risotto was perfectly al dente, fragrant and cheesy and gone in about twenty seconds. The salad was crisp and fresh, and the dressing must have been homemade because it put store-bought versions to shame. For our main courses, I had the duck l'orange. Cooked a precise medium, tender and expertly seasoned. It was served with a butternut squash puree (my only complaint was that there was not enough of it on the plate), crispy tasty Brussels sprouts, and a sweet tangy sauce that made me want to lick the plate clean. My son had the lamb shank- it was HUGE, and fell off the bone like it had been slow cooked for 14 hours. My wife and daughter shared the dinner special- a tomahawk chop. It could easily have fed three people (and possibly four). They were rhapsodizing about it, so of course, I had to try it for myself. I say this without hyperbole- I have dined at virtually all of the best steakhouses in NYC. This tomahawk blew all of them out of the water. It literally melted in your mouth. You could effortlessly cut it with just a fork. The ideal blend and saturation of salt and pepper. Served with two sides- a gigantic bowl of crispy french fries and those yummy sprouts. Even with two people sharing, and the other two picking, fully a third of it made its way home with us. And then... the surprise. I'm not sure how it came about. Again, I told no one at the restaurant that it was my birthday when I made the reservation. No one in my family called ahead- they didn't even know where we were going. Someone must have overheard our table conversation, or it was some arcane magic that was responsible... but a crème brulee with candles was brought to the table, and Happy Birthday was piped over the house speakers, and I was serenaded by the staff and patrons. I really did not expect it, and I was so touched by the gesture. It was a gift. Oh, and the crème brulee was divine. As was the carrot cake and chocolate mousse that we ordered for dessert. Even my coffee was great, LOL. A fantastic way to end the meal. Now I know why TGF keeps things so low key. I'm sure that the residents of that particular neck of the woods must know full well about The Grand Feast... and I'm sure they hold this knowledge close to the vest, because why would they want to risk having this neighborhood treasure overrun by outsiders? In fact, pretend you didn't read this review. Because I want to be able to go back to The Grand Feast again, and again, and have it be as amazing as it was tonight. read more

Nice spot in UWS with really excellent food, a great menu and just a bit of an opportunity in the decor. Friendly service and this place could be a stunner with more attention to detail. Our family chose Grand Feast to celebrate a birthday, and it turned out to be the best decision. We'd heard the food was exceptional -- some even said the best on the Upper West Side -- and it absolutely lived up to the reputation. I'll admit I was a little skeptical when we first walked in, since the restaurant itself is quite simple. But the manager was very accommodating and let us bring in our own tablecloth and decorations, which made the celebration feel extra personal. His attentiveness, along with the excellent service throughout the evening, set just the right tone. And then came the food, which was nothing short of outstanding - its reputation is well deserved. Every single dish was beautifully prepared and full of flavor. Our group ordered a wide variety of items, and each one was cooked to perfection. The DUCK, their signature dish, was a highlight: tender with just the right amount of crispness, paired with an orange sauce that was not too sweet. I ordered the SHELLFISH & SHRIMP over FETTUCCINE, and it was incredible -- the broth was so delicious I wished I had asked for a spoon to savor every last drop. The RISOTTO was creamy and comforting, the peas adding a nice freshness. The SALMON & STEAK were also excellent, both cooked exactly as ordered. Honestly, it's impressive how such a small kitchen can deliver dishes of this caliber. We took advantage of their VERY FAIR WINE PRICES and ordered a few bottles. All in all we felt we were getting great value. Grand Feast isn't fancy, but the food speaks for itself and makes it worthwhile. The service makes you feel cared for, and the whole experience feels like a hidden gem on the Upper West Side. I had the beef bourginon and a Cesar salad and wtf it was good! lol it was quiet for lunch but amazing. Great service too. I was here for a private event, so I didn't get to order on my own, but the food was fabulous, and the service was equally as good. I'm not from New York, so parking is a little intimidating, so I Uber there and back . But it certainly was worth a trip.. Here's my take on the food Fried calamari - perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked. Truffle fries - cooked perfectly but lacked flavor. Brussel sprouts - really well done, a very delicious side. Penne ala Bodka - very simple, but to perfection, really delicious. Green pea truffle risotto - I gotta tell you my first bite, I wasn't sure what I was eating, because the taste of the pee was so heavy. But when I figured out what I was eating, I realize this was a very special dish, that had not gotten anywhere else in the world.. Beef Bourguignon - served over mashed potatoes, this was a very rich and satisfying dish. I would order it again 10 times.. Crispy skinned fried chicken - now this one threw me because the chicken was fried, but the skin was like you would see on a crispy duck dish that you get at your favorite Thai restaurant. Except this wasn't a Thai restaurant, it was the grand feast, and the chef told me he was actually going for that same flavor and texture that you get from crispy duck, and he succeeded.. It was a real surprise, and it was a delicious dish.. Dessert needed to get back to my hotel as I had an early flight, but I enjoyed everything about this restaurant and I leave the city with good memories . read more

This place may not look like much, but it's clearly run by hospitality veterans who know exactly what they're doing. The food is standard American bistro fare, but it's faultless. And the service may seem informal, but all the little details are just right. The decor could probably use an update, or at least a facelift so that it parallels the quality of the aforementioned food and service. Stopped by this restaurant during a search for a great neighborhood happy hour deal. We were the only guests there and were allowed to bring in our dog since it was cold outside. The place doesn't have their full liquor license yet so we opted to getting a Guinness and IPA pint for $6 each. Well worth the price and will be back to try their wine and food! read more

I've been here several times and everything I've had had been amazingly good. The duck a l'orange is stellar, and is what my partner usually gets. The lasagne (an occasional special) is the best I've ever had. Beef bourgonon is good. The crispy Brussels sprouts are excellent. The mussels are great. The beet salad is also. If you come for brunch the omelettes are good. The place has the decor of a diner, but the food is so much better than so many more expensive places. The service is fantastic, and if you come often, he'll remember what you had before. read more

We thought we were just going to have a normal dinner in the city and there were only two other tables occupied when we walked in on Thursday evening - the place was basically empty. But literally every. Single. Dish. We tried was a hit. It wasn't fancy food. It's the kind of food yours truly could've made for you at a dinner party, but all of it was well executed and delicious, which is the most important part in my book. we were staying on the other west side and looking for a good restaurant in the area without having to go to midtown and came upon the Grand Feast, which was delicious. The Malbec wine was smooth and went well with the chicken Parmesan and salad. I did not want the spaghetti so they substituted a delicious salad in place of pasta. My husband got the seafood fettuccine and it was also wonderful. The fettuccine perfectly. The seafood was fresh. It was cooked in a lovely white wine sauce. typically don't get dessert, but we ended up trying the flan because our waiter shared that it was homemade and we are very particular about the flaw we eat. He said you will really like this one and he was right. It was the right texture was perfectly cooked was smooth and had a honey on top and around it that just added another level of amazing flavor. One of my favorite restaurants in the Columbia University area. My sister and I eat brunch there at least two Saturdays a month. The restaurant is a good size, not huge, but not so small that you feel crowded. I've been there when it's uncrowded, also when almost all the tables are full, but it never feels too noisy to make conversation. Service is also good, the wait staff very accommodating and friendly. We almost always order from the brunch menu. The Very Berry French Toast is wonderful, a delicious indulgence. The pancakes are also excellent. I'm picky about burgers, but their classic burger is perfect, comes on a yummy brioche bun with great French fries. The Build Your Own Omelette is also a favorite, choice of two vegetables and a meat. I haven't yet eaten dinner there, but plan to soon. I definitely recommend checking it out. read more

When we arrived for our 6pm reservation for 4 people there was one other table of 3 people finishing up. NO other customers after us. Just had the best Beef Bourguignon in recent memory in a sleeper of a spot, the family-run Grand Feast, whose chef and crew are well versed in the classics of French and Italian cuisine bc they cooked and staffed in serious restos. There are a wide choice of selections. The decor is a little bit film noir on acid. Don't be fooled. This is the real thing run by simpatico devotees headed by Chef Jose and Maitre d' Felipe. My friend and I were recently raving about a few neighborhood restaurants when someone overheard us and insisted we try the Grand Feast on 102nd Street. We both live nearby on West End Ave but had never thought to go in. We made it a point to try it for lunch--and we're so glad we did. The atmosphere was cozy, the music pleasantly low, and best of all, our meals and the service were excellent. I had the burger, and I honestly can't remember having a fresher, more delicious one. My friend loved her dish as well. Naturally, we had to test the desserts: she enjoyed the tiramisu, and I had an incredibly moist carrot cake. Philippe, the attentive and friendly maître d', happily brought hot milk for my coffee. Also, kudos to the talented chef, Jose! It's a pleasure having such well-prepared food in our neighborhood. I've lived in the neighborhood since long before this restaurant opened, but never tried it because I wasn't inspired by the look of the place. Finally, however, after reading glowing reviews, we tried it last night. And are we glad we did! Don't be misled by the cheezy decor and the less-than-luxurious physical appointments. The food is wonderful! The Fried Calamari was fresh and not overly breaded or salted. (But ask them to warm the marinara). The Seared Scallops with white polenta and crispy leeks were perfectly cooked and so full of flavor! And the "Duck a l'orange" was actually a perfectly cooked duck breast with beautifully rendered fat and a delicate sauce and crispy brussel sprouts. Often duck is badly prepared and something to avoid. Not here. Even the simple carrot cake dessert was notable as being moist without being soggy and not the usual icing-delivery mechanism. My only suggestion would be slightly more attention to minor details. For example, they were out of English Breakfast tea, so no option for someone who likes plain tea. And the marinara with the calamari didn't come warmed, so it could have cooled off the perfectly cooked squid. On asking, however, they quickly warmed some. Service is nice, pretty good and appreciative. Try The Grand Feast. read more

A Fine Dining Gem on the Upper West Side: From the first bite of the warm and crispy bread and sweet butter you know you are in for a feast. We ordered a Vichyssoise as a starter. It was served garnished with slivered almonds and a pesto aioli, a creamy and refreshing introduction to a meal that only kept getting better. The three entrees we chose were the Duck a l'orange, half chicken w/ mashed potatoes and Risotto w/ shrimp. All came out piping hot, presented beautifully and just delicious. Every single part of each meal was a tasty delight right down to warm bread w/ soft butter! Abby was our waitress and she was beyond attentive and so friendly! I had a fantastic dinner at THE GRAND FEAST tonight. I wanted a nice place to enjoy a meal with a friend so we could catch up and enjoy delicious food. For starters we had the Spicy tuna tartare. not too spicy but was perfectly seasoned with avocado & potato crisps! For main I had the Duck L'orange which was exquisite and a very sizeable portion. My friend had the salmon which came with a side and a tomato remoulade on top. Both dishes were amazing! Highly recommend. honestly I believe ANYTHING on the menu would be delicious so it just depends on your mood/taste. We were stuffed but our sweet waitress Abbi brought out complimentary tiramisu. Perfection! And to beat all of that our bill was $150 including tip and a bottle of wine! The restaurant was busy but not super crowded so we had a very pleasant evening.
