Came here with some friends on an early Saturday night. Sat inside. WHAT IS THAT HORRIBLE STENCH THAT PERMEATES THE ENTIRE INSIDE?? It's slightly sewer'ish with a hint of poop. It's really awful. Anyway all of us ordered the salad with salmon. Food was good but my only complaint was the shape/size of the plate. Oval small plate with a huge salad is never a good thing. Not a very good experience at this place. Have been here twice before and had pretty decent service to us. Tonight they were very unorganized and took very long to get our food and we found out our order was not put in...after we finished the appetizer. Not the servers fault just because I believe she was one of the bar backs for the smaller bar but it was just very unorganized. Also had half of a toothpick lodged inside of a burger that we had ordered. Not the best experience. Food was good, service could be better. 1 star before the edit. Had a nice lunch in the summer here on the little enclosed brick balcony. Not a scenic water overlook or anything, but a nice place to grab lunch and a beverage and get out of the sun. The attached liquor store isn't super huge but they did carry some different offerings that we didn't see in other stores. I recently saw on the news with Sandy that it looked like they may have taken some water and was concerned, but then saw on FB that they are opening tonight, so good news. read more

3 generations of my family have come here. It's great. Has any drink you'd want while there, and is the only place to buy beer in Stone Harbor. The lines are VERY long on holiday weekends, but they staff accordingly. I have many Fred's shirts, and have been wearing them since I was 5 (I'm 32). For those complaining about the smell: this place is right on the bay, and sometimes you WILL smell low tide. It's part of the shore, not Fred's. Geez. read more

I've lived in the area for around 2 years now. This is really random but, Fred's has THE BEST cheesesteak at the shore. No contest. I've probably eaten 30 cheesesteaks down here at different establishments. It's my go-to and i just couldn't believe how good Fred's was. Their French fries are also really great. I pretty much get a cheesesteak here every other week ( bad I know ). If you're looking for great food, fast service and excellent takeout, this is your spot! Briefly met the owner tonight and he was very kind. The lady prefers their hot honey chicken Caesar salad. She raves about it all the time. Can't go wrong with Fred's! It's been a "few years" since we'd been in Fred's. Wow! Things have changed!! We were expecting the "old neighborhood bar...." And, well, what we got was a new streamlined, very modern, updated bar and restaurant! My fiancé (now husband) and I had a few drinks in Freds one Saturday in May 1989. We then took a walk on the beach and he proposed to me! Ring and all!! So Freds will always be an important place for us. So, if you've been to Stoneharbor, you've undoubtedly seen many people wearing Fred's tavern T-shirts, so I figured it was time we check it out. So it's a tavern with a simple yet thorough menu with lots of choices across the board and very reasonable prices. My french dip sandwich was huge with fresh toll and thick slices of beef. The side of chips are generic but I couldn't even get to them since the sandwich was so big. My wife got the California burger with guacamole and sweet potato fries and honestly, we both could have shared it, the portion was that big. There is no kids menu so we ordered a chicken quesadilla for our boy and while he barely touched it I liked it. Lots of chicken and toppings with peppers and cheese, in a grilled flor tortilla. This wasn't a greasy quesadilla either which was great. The pico de Gallo on the side was mostly flavorless, maybe regular salsa next time. Our waitress was incredibly quick with our service, which for a family is Worth it's weight in gold! All of the staff we encountered was very friendly, which probably explains the amount of love this place receives from the town. It's not a fancy place, it's not the view, it's just a bar with a funky smell that offers you a good bang for your buck with friendly service and I'm sure we will be coming back again for more! read more

Chicken in the southwest salad was tough, the bacon in the bacon cheeseburger was crisp/good, while the burger itself tasted overcharred (like the grill wasn't clean). So you're down the shore for the 4th and you've just finished a day on the beach, a nice meal and you've seen the fireworks. I don't know about you, but at this point in the evening, my appetite turns to beer. I took a hint from the locals and went along with them to this little spot. I was prepped by my girlfriend's parents to expect an old living room with plaid wall paper and dusty wooden accents. Instead, I walked into a place that I suppose has been recently renovated. I spied a large island bar with granite tops and hardwood flooring, expansive space, flat screens and a halfway decent beer selection. I wasn't expecting much in the beer department but when I saw a few crafts along with the standard macros, I felt better. We grabbed a table on the side which was prime for people watching. As the four of us sat and conversed, we watched the place fill in with more "shore" people and even saw a few brotastic dance parties break out. Even with this element around, the service from the bar was snappy and the prices were decent. I can see myself coming back to Fred's when I'm in Stone Harbor. I get the impression that it's the thing to do and I'm fine with that. read more

We'd been here a few times late night for drinks, but never to eat. We finally attempted to give the food a try on a Sunday afternoon and were let down. We sat away from the actual bar at a very nearby high table against the wall. The monotone bald "bartender" (who we've noticed in the past is unfriendly to everyone except his regular townies) ignored us. He has this permanent look on his face that reads "yeah uh..what the hell do you want?". We waited..he stared, but never came over. Finally!.. from behind the bar he calls over.. "if you want food, you'll need to come up here to order"..the bar was 95% empty, and he still couldn't bring himself from behind it to greet his only guests? I will always love Fred's. I loved the old dark divey no food cash only Fred's and i love the new bright Fred's that serves food and takes all my money no matter what form. For any current patrons, the new set up is amazing because the place can fit so many more people. They have a decent selection of draft beers and a full bar. All of the food I tried was great--I'd even say above normal bar food quality (wings = awesome). The bathroom is clean and beautiful now! I don't think it lost it's old charm in the renovation--there are still people drunk there inappropriately early and the liquor store hasn't changed a bit. Fred's Tavern was solid. We were seated outside on the patio and had a great experience. After skimming through the other Fred reviews, I just had to go wings (yes, again)! They were a little on the crispy side and full of flavor. They definitely receive my endorsement. The one thing that I find a bit perplexing is the fact that they can't mix their beer inventory with the liquor store. For example, The Dogfish Head Punkin Ale had just been released and is available in the store but not in the restaurant. They really do have to find a way to take advantage of their own situation. I ended up going with the beer that was "formerly" brewed in the glass lined tanks of Latrobe, PA. My family was treated great and Fred's is kids friendly for lunch and dinner. The boys split the chicken fingers and my wife enjoyed the house salad with chicken. I also love the Fred's Tavern t-shirt. These are plentiful and easily spotted throughout Stone Harbor, NJ. I have been coming to Stone Harbor every single year for the past 30 years and Fred's has always been a place my entire family liked to go to for a casual cold beer. The past couple of years we've noticed their attempt at becoming more known as a restaurant than a bar, and even though they lost most of the charm of Fred's when they did that, we would still go for Quizzo and some late night beers. This year, however, may be our last trip to Fred's. A group of 7 of us stopped by the other night to watch the Stanley Cup Finals and enjoy some beers and Quizzo. You'd think that Fred's would welcome a large group of mature adults (not rowdy) who wanted to spend 3-4 hours ordering rounds of drinks, but we were told that we couldn't sit together at a table unless we all ordered food, even though there wasn't enough room at the bar for us to all sit together. The restaurant wasn't crowded at all and there were plenty of tables available, but the waitress wouldn't budge. Finally we all agreed to just sit down and order, But when we tried to order some fried apps, wouldn't you know the doll of a waitress told us their fryer was broken! So after all that we couldn't even order any of the things we wanted and had to buy food that just sat at our table. My family has been spending our summers in Stone Harbor my entire life, when my sister told me she didn't want a bridal shower, I compromised and threw her a bridal shower at Fred's. I originally spoke with Tom who was more than happy to accommodate approximately 30 people in the bar area. When we arrived, Joe had a table set up for a buffet style lunch and we were able to secure quite a few seats at the bar. Our bartender, Jim, was nothing short of amazing and attentive to our group! He was on point with handing me beers while I was pacing of nervousness waiting for my sister to arrive. Throughout the afternoon, Joe was absolutely wonderful to my family and made sure we were well taken care of. Like the other reviewer, I've been coming to the Jersey shore since I was an infant. My manpiece and I both shared a strange revelation this week: while we've purchased booze from Fred's store, and both have known Fred's Tavern as a staple since we were young, neither of us had ever been. Obvs, that had to change. As huge fans of dive bars, we were worried that this place LOOKED like a dive, but in fact would be yuppified in true Stone Harbor fashion. We walked in, hesitantly. Curtains that haven't been changed since 1982? Check. Cracked bar stools? Check. Dingey and dark? Check. Inappropriately drunk patrons for mid-afternoon? Check, check, check, check, and check. And check. TVs playing the Phillies game but nobody watching? CHECK! It was awesome. We were thrilled. I actually love the Fred's Tavern t-shirts now. I used to hate seeing them, but now I take them as a sign that the wearer has experienced Fred's divey greatness. It's like the most public secretly awesome dive bar in Jersey. Fred's was just what we needed, a couple of sandwiches and a nice draft beer selection. We went for lunch and sat in the covered porch in the front which was perfect on a beautiful day, however seating inside would have been just a nice. Looks like they recently renovated the interior and exterior. There is a good-size bar area that was quite lively for a pre-season Saturday, with a huge old brick fireplace. We had the grilled chicken sandwich and turkey club - both were good....and our waitress was on point....5 stars in my book. Oh and they also run the liquor store next door which was perfect spot to pick up a bottle for dinner at the BYOB spots in the area. read more

Love Fred's! We come here to meet friends for drinks, or after a busy work night for drinks or for dinner. The servers and bartenders are friendly and accommodating. The drinks are cold and the food is ideal bar food. We love the burgers and recently had a filet tip quesadilla special that I have dreams about. read more
