Our furnace recently went down and was not blowing hot air, leaving our house less than 60 degrees inside and getting colder. We called the original installer (not Mercury) of the furnace to take a look and see if he could fix it. Couldn't figure out the problem but said he would replace the motor and pressure switches for $2,000 after looking at the unit a bit. He then told us we should consider installing a heat pump, so we decided to get quotes from several companies to install one. Ian was the only that asked us "do you actually want to replace it?" instead of immediately trying to sell us a new unit. Even just speaking with him over the phone for a few minutes, he showed just how knowledgeable he was and what questions we needed to ask the other sales reps. So I waited for Ian to come by and give us his opinion. Within 20 minutes, Ian had CORRECTLY diagnosed the problem and had our furnace back up and running for the first time in over a week. He then showed us everything that was wrong with the original installation of the unit. Ian is so incredibly knowledgeable about every single aspect of these units: the thermostats, motors, electrical, filters, fuses, wiring, troubleshooting, everything. He also gave us a quote for the install of a new heat pump and the pricing was incredibly competitive compared to all the other big names in the area. Last few years, the ac would sometimes turn on and going into this year, I didn't want to worry. I booked Smart on-line and it was really easy. Michael came by and he checked the current setup and explained what needed to be done to replace the unit. He was extremely knowledgeable and answered all my questions. Granted this was my 4th quote so I knew somethings. He never pressured me to purchase but i decided to pull the trigger to have him do the job. The rate was competitive but it was his knowledge and being personable that I made me feel comfortable to have him do the job. The replacement happened the following week and his team took all day. Michael went above and beyond making sure the job was done right and replaced a wood piece to my attic that he didn't need to do, but he did. Very nice. The crew left discarded piping on the roof, and the blower wheel was damaged during the installation process. Second, the company showed a lack of professional responsibility and communication. While on-site, the technicians clearly noticed that relevant, adjacent systems (installed previously by others) were incorrect. Rather than informing me of these issues, they chose to ignore them. A responsible contractor should communicate crucial system findings to the homeowner and avoid damaging new equipment. I do not recommend their services based on this experience.
