The owners did a marvelous job of renovating a century old cotton and lumber freight building (literally) right next to the train tracks. They authentically preserved the atmosphere and created an amazing dining room! Joanna, our server, was very pleasant, attentive, and efficient. Our salads were nice and fresh and cold. We had the filet mignon and bourbon brown sugar rib eye. They were both great although I was partial to the rib eye: fantastic taste! We are headed home to Ohio from a week in Florida and saw the highway sign and decided to stop and take a break and try this restaurant out. We are traveling with two teenagers and my mother in law. We started with fried pickles (great ranch!!) and fried tomatoes, which were very good. Our entrees varied from chicken Alfredo, salads, bbq sliders and a burger and fries. All food was served hot and was very tasty. Our server was very prompt and efficient with refills and removal of not needed dishes. It's good but it's not all that... I was going to try the steak but it was a bit pricey IMHO. The server was excellent and had the right amount of interaction. The thing that makes it most appealing is the physical appearance and the history behind the building. Mind you the food is good, but I don't think it will become a go to destination for us. I had the blackened catfish, sweet potato casserole, two hush puppies and tomatoes for lunch. All the items were cooked well but for some reason the plate looked rather blah when presented... One other observation dealt with the hush puppies. They were a bit hard for my taste and had a good amount of grease on them. Granted being that they are fried it is to be expected. Maybe it's me. Food is severely lacking seasoning of any kind. Restaurant is just a few minutes off of I-65 and has plenty of parking in several lots located nearby. Building is a bonus to eating here since it has some character to it. We also had a couple of trains go past while we were eating which was a neat experience. The inside needs more light, since most of the light comes from openings on the train track side of the building. This means that when a train goes by the restaurant is fairly dimly lit. I ordered the fried mushroom as well as the cheese stick appetizers. Both came out fairly quickly, but that is about the only good thing I can say about them. The mushrooms were unseasoned batter covered mushrooms fried until golden brown. They looked good, but didnt have any flavor to speak of. The dipping sauce provided was the only thing that lent flavor to them. The cheese sticks were similarly devoid of flavor, with the marinara providing the only real noteworthy aspect. The waiter asked how the mushrooms were and I provided honest feedback. Next thing I know the manager came over and was asking about them as well. I just asked for a side of ranch since that can make most things at least edible. The manager asked if I wanted something else instead, but my response was that there wasn't anything really wrong with the mushrooms besides the lack of flavor so I didnt want anything else. To be honest I was worried that other items would have the same lack of seasoning. Wife got the grill chicken filet with a baked potato and green beans. The chicken had no flavor and was rubbery, overall not pleasant. The green beans were cooked with bacon and despite that they lacked any true seasoning. The baked potato was reported to be quite good though. One of the kids got the same grill chicken filet meal, and had the same feedback on the chicken. I was able to convince her to eat a few bites of it but it went mostly uneaten on the plate. She said that her baked potato was good, as were the fries. Other kid got the chicken tender express which was chicken fingers with 2 sides. She only wanted chicken fingers with fries so I had her get the onion strings so I could eat some of them if desired. The same bland breading that was used on the mushrooms was used on the chicken, so it came as no surprise that a lot of honey mustard dressing was used to eat them. I ordered the catfish filet for myself with a double order of mashed potatoes and gravy. The catfish came with cocktail or tartar and I asked for cocktail sauce. It appeared to be made in house and was fairly good. It definitely made the catfish better. By far the most flavor of anything that was ordered came from the mashed potatoes and gravy. They were quite good. Service was really good. Portions were generous for the price. Food needs some serious flavor/seasoning. If I lived in the area I would be willing to try this place again, but would certainly steer clear of any fried items. read more

I have eaten there several times before so I looked forward to meeting friends from out of town for lunch today. We three women were seated at 11:30 before a group of 20 or so people came in together and were seated next to us. The server for our section of the restaurant was a young male who was superb but overworked. The group's drinks and meal orders were taken before our orders were taken and which took 45 minutes to receive. Our server was frequently seen refilling individual drinks at the group's table while three other servers - a young male and two middle aged women - were seen serving their few customers then disappearing. It would have been nice if one of them had given our server a hand in refilling drinks or whatever it would take to free him up to balance his time amongst all of his customers. First off, the environment is great, the service was quick, and they were absolutely cute with their Christmas decor! However, our meals were rather bland. I ordered the shrimp Alfredo and the fiancé ordered a depot burger, and our little girl got the kids cheeseburger. My pasta was undercooked and under seasoned, and I ended up sharing French fries from the other two meals. My fiancé wasn't impressed with the burger either. I will say, LOVE their French fries. Definitely a place to go to say you've went, just hopefully someone else is cooking your food that day. read more

We stopped off the interstate on the way home and was originally headed to somewhere else when we saw a small faded sign. We decided to head "downtown" and see if it was still open. Loved the atmosphere and everyone was so friendly. We had the sweetest, most attentive waitress and i feel horrible i didn't get her name and can't commend her personally. I had the grilled island chicken and my husband had the hamburger steak florette. We enjoyed our meals and if we lived closer, we would definitely return sooner. Nice old historic building great dessert great service but the Mahi Mahi tasted like someone dumped the whole salt shaker on it before cooking it. You could barely taste the rest of the meal for the salt on the fish. The server's advice was to order something else next time but in all fairness we had already consumed the overly salted fish before lodging any complaint . Dessert and service were on point though and service was some of the best I have ever had in a restaurant. Visited this fine establishment on a Thanksgiving week while visiting family. We were seated quickly in in the dining area that is a converted train depot. Super cool. I ordered the hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and pinto beans with cornbread. All were very flavorful and well done. Service was quick and nicely done. I had a reservation and my family and I still had to wait and after the wait was given the option to go to the upstairs section(worse seating) or wait even longer for the downstairs section(better seating). When we got upstairs and got seated I noticed the tables were about as cheap as you can get and then took a look at the menu and wondered why this was the case with the prices they were charging. They brought out our drinks and there was lipstick on my glass, I tried not to think about that the rest of the meal. The food was surprisingly good although the hamburger steak was burnt and the chicken tenders were soggy. Desert was delicious I got the Freighthouse brownie. I stopped in one afternoon after attending a local memorial service for a friend. I live forty miles away, so I had never been to this restaurant before. Didn't know what to expect, but after skimming over the menu, it looked pretty interesting. I decided to go with a basket of fried mushrooms as an appetizer and ordered the Pollo de Normandy for my main course. Those fried mushrooms were amazing! They come with a house horseradish sauce. It's good, but I always get fried mushrooms with ranch as a dipping sauce. The waitress was very accommodating and brought me out a bowl. The Pollo de Normandy was great. Just as I started eating, a couple of family members walked in and joined me. I had a pleasant meal with great company. We enjoyed it so well, we all decided to go back for dinner a few weeks later. We had the bourbon brown sugar steaks and grilled chicken. Our meals were delicious. The steak was very flavorful. We will definitely be stopping in more, when we're in the area. This spot was recommended by our vet office (we drive an hour away), and it is a great recommendation. The atmosphere is rustic with a railroad theme. It is registered as an historic site. Customer service and waitress is good and pretty swift. We came at lunch time. Drinks are served in Mason jars and bathrooms are clean. The food is very good and not from can. We had fried mushrooms and pickles to start with, which are amazing. The horseradish sauce is great and highly recommended!!! For entrees- Depot burger, BBQ stuffed potato, pretzel salad, and the special- country fried steak. Dessert - coconut cake. Depot burger was cooked well 14 yo rated it as 4 out of 5. The BBQ potato was good and cooked well. The country fried steak was very good and the best I have had. The black eyes peas were good for someone that doesn't like them. The coconut cake was amazing!!! The pretzel salad was different from other places with orange jello and mandarin oranges. It was very good and flavorful. After wayyy too long to get our food (it was practically empty), we finally got our entrees. My wife's island chicken was basically a teriyaki chicken with pineapple chunks. Ok. The mashed potatoes were really good, but the canned green beans were bland, and the yeast roll was store bought. I had the smothered hamburger steak that came out over cooked. I ordered Medium, and got extra well done. The turnip greens were bland and canned, and my roll was the same store bought thing. I hate to write this but it has to be done. This is for the most part a great restaurant. The setting, staff, atmosphere, and most of the food is great. My issue is: for a restaurant of this caliber, why do you serve "Bubba Burger" type hamburger steak and chicken fried steak? I honestly couldn't believe what I was eating. It was one of the "from a box" hamburger patties that had been battered and called Chicken Fried Steak. You could even see the fake grill marks when the crust came off. This should honestly be unacceptable to the owners. Please fix this! The chicken tenders are great and the fillet mignon is really good.
