We used French Bros to replace our flooring that was having issues with moisture from the start. It was installed a little over 2 years ago and we had problems from the beginning. Just had another great experience with these folks, this time as a returning customer. I recently moved into a new condo and ordered some rugs online. While the rugs themselves were fine, the "luxurious" pads they sold me as an add-on were useless--lying down (or even walking) on these rugs was pretty much like lying on a hardwood floor. Nicole set me up with a thick foam pad which they cut to the exact size I needed and the whole thing cost significantly less that prices I saw online -- places that wanted you to buy a whole roll of the padding rather than just what you need. AND they charge more per square yard for the stuff than French Bros. So now I can do my morning yoga and abs workout on the rug and it feels great. It's so nice these days to find a local brick-and-mortar store that really takes care of its customers and has totally competitive prices. Highly recommended. read more

I was at the end of my floor search for my remodeling project and was in the area and wanted to leave no stone unturned. I mean I visited over 15 floor stores and some of them multiple times from Oakland to San Leandro to Hayward and Union City! I was down to my final pick but decided to check out French Bros. I was greeted by Juan who I wish I would have had at the beginning of this journey. What I thought was my number 1, I think found another that caught my eye and low and behold, I bought it. With that said, Juan was super patient, super knowledgeable and we talked about other things other than the floors like windows and paint selection. An excellent experience from first contact to final installation. Scott Daniels was very helpful discussing our flooring options and decisions. Communication was excellent (especially when compared to other flooring companies who either couldn't be bothered to respond or bid, or failed to respond with our follow up questions, etc.). Had both carpeting and flooring installed on separate days and the crews were great. On time, efficient and helped problem solve minor issues that popped up during the installation process. I talked with Scott on the phone to have quick inquiry about whether they carry the product Marmoleum Click CinchLoc Eternity in store so we can take a look at the plank sample in full size. What supposed to be a quick yes & no conversation, turn into a 20minute long uncomfortable experience of him speaking in condescending way of accusing me not providing the right product name and thus he can't find what I'm looking for. I mentioned the name that's in the official sample label that I have at hand and the same label that shows up in Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart and many many other flooring stores. I see other people having great experience with them. Too bad that I'm paired with a sale's person who talk over others and vent his frustration onto his customers. Will skip! read more

Things went from bad to worse with this incompetent and destructive company. We hired them to replace the kitchen and bathroom floors with vinyl. They started the job late and finished late. They broke our stove while moving it, they broke our closet door while looking for the circuit breaker, they chipped our tile while installing the bathroom, and they tracked glue onto our hallway carpet. Four months later, most of the vinyl in the bathroom is bubbling up two inches and needs to be fixed or replaced. Do not let these incompetent and destructive people into your home. read more

The pre-installation discussions and actual installation were fine. Brad was helpful, and the carpets looked good. When the job was done, we went into the property and did a walkthrough to inspect the carpets, and we were satisfied with the job. The property was vacant (and still is), and nobody had been there since that quick visit. Fast forward 2.5 weeks, we went into the condo again just to check on it before the tenants move in, and we found that the door frames that were painted 4 days before the carpet installation were scratched and the paint was pealing. During our initial walkthrough when the carpet installation was done, we were focused on the carpet and didn't even think of checking out the recently painted door frames. It was only on our second visit that we noticed it. Since no one had been there after the installation, it was so obvious that the installers had damaged the door frames while removing and bringing in the new carpets. There is no other explanation. I took photos and sent them to Brad and also phoned him to let him know what had happened. He told me that this has never happened before in all the years he is been in business, and that he would look at the photos and get back to me. I did not hear back from him so  I sent him another text inviting him to come and take a look for himself in person, but, no response from him. I am having to get my painter out there again to repaint the damaged door frames at our expense.   If you use this company, make sure you check the walls and frames or any other damage caused by the installers  before you pay them. read more

French Bros was recommend by our building's HOA and recently replaced the flooring in our condo. I am glad I went with the HOA's recommendation! Nesreen and Roberto were super helpful and responsive when answering all our questions and explaining our options. We ran into some issues when preparing for the floor installation and another company may have refused the job, but French Bros (especially Nesreen!) was patient and willing to work with us. They made the process a lot easier. The new LVP floors they helped pick out looks great! I definitely recommend French Bros if you are looking for a flooring company. read more

Brad and Janis the owners are amazing. They care about the community where they are running their business. They want to give back and make Oakland a better place. I teach kindergarten at a charter school in East Oakland. Last December Brad and Janis came to my classroom to bring the class a present for the holidays. They mentioned if we ever needed any rugs at the school to let them know. I was taken a back by their willingness to donate. I wasn't sure if they were just being nice or serious? They were serious! Janis contacted me again and asked about the rug donation!! I am happy to say they are not only true to their word, but enthusiastic, and generous. They donated, bound and delivered 8 rugs today. These guys have a really good flooring selection, and they're nice and helpful. Overall, our floor looks really good, but there are severe caveats. As at least one other person said here, DOUBLE and TRIPLE CHECK their measurements. Anthony Bush is the employee who did the measurements and provided a quote to install a new vinyl floor. Their quote was the best we got, so we went with them. On the day they were to install the floor, as they were bringing materials in and starting work, Anthony says he got the quote wrong and we'd have to pay $3000 more than he quoted us - almost 50% more than the original quote. W.T.F. My options were to send them away and delay moving into my house for weeks in order to book someone else, or to just eat it. He took a little off the quote, but we were still nearly $3k over what we were originally quoted. Anthony said he measured wrong, but how can anyone be off by that much, especially if it's your job that you do every day?! And why is that my problem?! On top of that, they floored right over the one and only working TV cable connection in the house, after I told them more than once not to do so. They were supposed to preserve the cable that came in through the floor in the corner. I had to pay for the cable company to reinstall. They also didn't warn us that the baseboard install wouldn't be finished work, and would require a painter (to be found and hired by us) to patch the hundreds of little puncture holes and paint over them. OK, maybe this is standard practice or something, but when I ask a flooring company to install baseboards, unless they explicitly state otherwise (which they did NOT), I would expect the job to be done top to bottom. I don't expect them to just do as much of the job as they feel like, and expect me to hire someone else to do the rest. I've had baseboards installed by other companies, and they did everything necessary to finish the job completely, why not these guys? Be that as it may, they should at least be clear about what they will and won't do. Bottom line, if you use these guys, double and triple and quadruple check everything, and have them clearly and explicitly state what they will do and what they will not. read more

French Brothers won our business due to the deep experience and helpful advice of their staff, their expansive selection of flooring options, and the very competitive pricing. It took a while for the wood to make its way across the ocean (darn supply chain), but Scott kept us in the loop regarding arrival the whole time. The end result is a beautiful new hardwood floor in our bedroom expertly installed over concrete slab. Looking forward to using them again for another flooring project at our home! read more

I dealt with French Brothers and three other places when trying to purchase some low price carpet for a small storage area. French Bros was definitely the best customer service out of all the places I checked out. I called for an estimate (which is the best way to deal with flooring places by the way, I would never just show up because they almost always just turn you away), and I spoke with a salesman who evaluated my needs based on what I told him, and gave me his price. He broke down the measurement, price per yard, and tax for me so I understood every step. He didn't try to upsell me on anything I didn't want, which I appreciated, and he followed up by calling me a few days after we spoke, even thoug I told him we were waiting on a few other bids. He told me he was going on vacation and referred me to a colleague. He and the other salesman and office managers I talked to were all very professional, friendly, and easy to work with. This was NOT the cheapest place I found; it was probably the second cheapest. But the other company I was dealing with kind of gave me the run around. All told, they were only about $40 total cheaper than French Bros, and I figured that $40 was worth the great service I got here. We went with these guys, and I would gladly work with them again in a heartbeat. About the parking: it sucks. I would deal with them mostly on the phone when you can so you don't have to stop by the office for long, then when I did come by to look ay samples, I parked in the Greyhound lot across the street. About the location: the building has a huge sign on it, and just go to the door with the bell and ring it, let them know you have an appointment (you should! or at least give them a heads up that you're coming by!) and you should have no problems. read more

Unfortunately I can only give these guys 3 stars. I recently had the French Bros come in through my real estate agent to prepare to sell my place. Agent handled the coordination and oversaw the installation for me since I was out of town. For the most part the carpeting was ok but they didn't do a great job in portions of the install. Down my hallway, there were bulges along the edges where the padding underneath was not trimmed correctly or simply bunched up. The lower molding on the baseboards were not replaced as well. This was in comparison to the bedroom where everything looked a lot cleaner. Price wise, I thought they charged a little too much for the quality of work performed. read more

9/23/14 Update: We have called on French Brothers twice since my review below - once in 2013 and last, this month. We received the same great professional service from Jim Levesque and Nicole - last year they installed carbonised bamboo as well as stairway carpeting in our downstairs space - looks great - the installers came on time and did a fast thorough job. And last week, on short notice, we arranged for French Brothers (thanks Dennis) to install vinyl plank flooring in the three carpeted bedrooms of our daughter's new condo (looks like wood, wears like iron). Jim and Nicole scheduled the job quickly to get it done a day before our daughter moved in and the floors look terrific. Highly recommend the vinyl plank as a hardwood alternative, especially for a rental apartment or area which will receive a LOT of wear and tear. Thank you French Brothers for coming through another time and doing a great job. 5/10/09: Great place to buy carpeting and flooring. My husband happened upon this business when we were in the market for carpeting last month - it was across the street from where he works, very convenient. He was met there by friendly, professional Jim Levesque who runs the place with his brother. Jim is a hands on owner, and took a personal interest in us and our project. He came to the house three times to meet me, and measure for three small projects. He has a great selection of carpeting in his warehouse with all price ranges and does not hesitate to point out how the customer can do what they want for lower rather than over the top prices. The prices are for carpeting installed and they do custom measuring as well. Before we found French Brothers, I had tried another store and found them to be unfriendly and apathethic about the products - basically the sales pitch was for a frowning saleswoman to stand in a corner and point to the samples "over there". Unbelievable how great these guys are! Their crews are always professional, polite, and get the jobs done on time. Our downtown Oakland office buildings sometimes require renovation while those suites are occupied. These are difficult jobs which require expert coordination between the other contractors, the building manager and the tenant. Jim and his crew at French Bros are excellent for these types of stressful, difficult jobs (though I'm sure he prefers the easier installs which they excel at as well). So i had a very nice guy come by and take a look at my second floor condo. I told him I was looking for something appropriate for a multi-level dwelling that looked really nice. Then i asked for a quote of certain rooms. He came back with a quote for all rooms for flooring that wasn't going to work. In my own time, I researched some floors that would be perfect (they contained cork and would be great for noise reduction). I asked him to redo the quote and then asked if he carried CoreTec floors. He said they did. I asked him why he didn't recommend that floor to me. He disappeared. Here's what I think. I think this guy thought I didn't have any money because I was a single woman living alone at the time. Well I took my $7K and gave it to S&G Carpet. My floor now looks beautiful. We had French Brothers install a carpet in our 2 bd rental condo. Initially, we got estimates from two companies based on Yelp ratings. My sister much preferred her meeting with Scott from French Brothers, who was professional, knowledgeable, prepared with the proper samples for our purposes, and gave us pricing to fit our budget. He was also responsive to emails and calls. Our neighbor, who gave the installers access to the condo and inspected the job, was impressed by their skill in fitting the carpet flush without stretch marks and plans to use French Brothers in the future.
