My husband dined at Frenier Landing today for lunch and he was disappointed. In the past the service was wonderful and the food delish. This time it was not too good. He and his guest ordered two appetizers, two salad entrees, water and three beers. The appetizers were shrimp wrapped in bacon (ok), crawfish hush puppies (pretty good). Then on to lunch. His client ordered the spinach salad with shrimp. My husband ordered the caesar's salad and added a chicken breast ($12 just for the breast). This is where it went downhill. Not only did the waitress not refill the water glasses, but the chicken breast was chewy and tough. My husband is not a complainer so when he said the chicken was bad, it was bad. He told the waitress that she might not want to serve any other chicken to another guest. She did not offer to replace his salad nor change the protein, no apology, nothing. Instead she came back to the table with the check - over $84 not including tip! The service was not the best, the hostess acted like she didn't want us there and did not even acknowledge us just started walking towards a table... we asked to eat outside and we did. The view made up for her rudeness, which I also witnessed toward another party. There was a little mix up with the server but I think it was because we sat outside.... After we were settled everything was hood. I got a mixed drink which was wonderful and the food was delicious. The views are great from here also. read more

Has a nice view from the porch looking out on the lake. The good ends there. Service was super slow. We ordered our appetizer and entrees at the same time. It took 25 minutes for our appetizer and another 15-20 for the entrees to come out (one was a salad). Never received a refill on the drinks. The bacon wrapped shrimp app was not worth the $12 for 4 shrimp. Not even close. It wasn't even the good part of the bacon, just the fatty bit wrapped around. I had the crab cake entree with hush puppies and coleslaw. The coleslaw tasted okay but was warm. Not really something you see for coleslaw so it was a bit off putting. Hush puppies were about the same you can find frozen in any grocery store, nothing remarkable. Now onto the crab cakes.. the very first bite had a bit of shell (so did the second for that matter). It is too easy to make sure there is no shell in a cooked crab dish. All you have to do is lightly cook it. The crab changes color as it cooks and the shell doesn't. My wife had the Pontchartrain Salad. It took her a second bite for her to have a bit of crab shell. Overall just not worth the money, time, or the gastric distress. read more

A New Meaning to A Batter Job I read the reviews and saw the good, the bad and the ugly. I was so confused after reading them, I decided to go and try the place out. I ordered the whole stuffed fried flounder for $24.00. Before I start the review, be it known I'm an avid Louisiana angler for over 50 years and know how to clean and cook fish. When I tell you every inch of the fish was battered and fried, I'm not exaggerating. The top of the fish was split down the middle long ways from head to tail and spread wide opened and battered inside and outside and fried, and fried, and fried, turning the meat crumbly, no moisture left inside the fish. Furthermore, the fish was not cleaned well enough either. There were still some internals left near where the head was removed. The menu said the flounder was topped with a crab meat and crawfish cream sauce. I didn't see any crawfish in the barely recognizable cream sauce and the crab meat was a dressing. Apparently Freniers Lansing has been there for 10 years but it's new to me. It is a ways off the main road and you start to think there's nothing actually back there, until it pops into view right on the water. My friend took me here on a Wednesday night to check it out and it's really quite cool and nice. We sat at the bar and had cocktails (I think mine was called The Lake) and I munched on the fried crawfish tails which were a perfect snack since I had already eaten dinner. The bartender was friendly and service was good. The place looks lovely with a nice back deck right on the lake. I will definitely come back on the weekend to check it out when I heard they have live music as well. And next time I'm brining a big appetite because the menu sounded great! Holy cow!!! My wife got the seafood stuffed flounder and it was absolutely out of this world! This is the biggest flounder I've ever seen served in a restaurant and it was absolutely delicious. We stopped to have drinks and lunch here on our way to New Orleans. We sat for over 2 hours with no food after we placed our order. The bartenders were friendly but the food service was terrible. We watched table after table be sat and fed and left and still no food. We were told on several occasions our food was "next". We paid for our drinks and left. First reaction - "What the...Where did this come from and why am I not here all the time!?" Every now and again as I pass over the Spillway heading towards Hammond, I notice 2 white houses to the right on the edge of the lake and the marsh. So on the way back from the airport, my family and I decided to have a little adventure time. We exited at LaPlace and took the service road towards Ruddock to find a sign for Frenier Landing's Restaurant about 3 miles into our exploration. Once we drove to the end of this road, we discovered that the 2 houses were in a village! I mean, talk about random! Apparently the Frenier Fishing Village has been there since the 1800s. When neighboring town Ruddock was blown away by a hurricane in 1915, so was Frenier but Ruddock was left a ghost town and Frenier somehow managed to rebuild (although not by much). The history of this place is actually quite fascinating filled with storms, voodoo women and strange coincidences. Our lunch consisted of Oyster Rockafeller soup, Shrimp Salad, Crawfish Tails, Fried Shrimp Poboy and Crab-Stuffed Flounder. Everything was just beautiful and 20 times better tasting than anything the competition could've presented. Best part? We didn't get the groggy food yukkies that usually follows after eating a ton of fried food. It was just right! Frenier's has a lovely view of Lake Ponchartrain, the Spillway and distant New Orleans. Was trying to find a place to go with a friend. I was looking online for restaurants within an hour of Houma. Not that far from New Orleans across Lake Pontchartrain. I was looking over menus and locations of different restaurants. This was my second pick, but also was my final pick. Off the 55 just north of 10. West of Lake Pontchartrain.Not far from ZipNOLA zip line. Location along the water. Went today, Saturday, at 1:30 PM. No crowd. Sat outside to watch the whitecaps of the water. Did have a gust of wind for a while due to weather. We had a seafood player and added soft shell crab. Definitely has a view. Staff was pleasant and always came to check with us. Was able to see an alligator resting on dock area. Does have some views and is at the end of a road just past a few homes. Worth the drive. First time here and self-picked without any local knowledge. read more

Before I begin, we are from the New Orleans area, so I know what to expect with local food as it relates to flavor and size. About a week ago, we came here on a Friday night for dinner. It wasn't really crowded. However, the service was not good at all as we had to keep looking for our waitress. I got the Lake Omelette. I was extremely disappointed. First, the menu states that you have your choice of "Gulf" shrimp, crabmeat, or crawfish tails. I went with shrimp, but was informed that I could get all three at no additional cost. I figured why not and did it. The shrimp WERE NOT gulf shrimp the way I think of them. These were the tiny, frozen shrimp you would find in a bag in your local grocer. As for crabmeat, it was almost non-existent. Finally, there was about 4 or 5 small crawfish tails. On top of that, the omelette was not seasoned at all. Secondly, my son ordered the Whole Stuffed Flounder. it was not "stuffed" with anything!. There was a little cream sauce on top, but that's pretty much it. He didn't even finish it. Last, my ordered a po-boy and that was decent, but certainly nothing to write about. We have many local restaurants near us within a 10 minute drive to us , so quality is not what took us that way. I guess if I wanted good Cajan food, I needed to go out to the bayou to get it! After being highly disappointed with my local color food in NOLA, I was thrilled with what we ate here after our swamp tour at "Cajan Pride." We started off with a the crab gratin, which was fresh crab in melty/baked cheese and spinach with toasted bread for dipping: absolutely pure decadence! I said, "Oh, this is crazy-I'll just try a bite." No way was there any chance for me after that first taste. I went to town on that bad boy! What arrived next was my soft shell crab po-boy, and honestly, I had no idea those things are fried. My jaw hit the floor because I never eat stuff that bad for you, but it was worth every calorie and then some! It was so flavorful, and the coleslaw in the sandwich was a great touch. I finished every last bite and I'm still drooling over it as I write this review. My husband and I also had the alligator sausage because what else do you eat after a swamp tour full of chomping gators? They were delicious and very crispy, which we like. The atmosphere was great, especially since it overlooked the Pontchartrain River. We loved our meal and will definitely be back the next time we're in town! read more

Just keep driving and go to Middendorf's. I'm mostly making this review so we don't forget that we wrote this place off. First, the water stinks. I had to switch to bottled and I'm not bougie like that. But every time I took a sip I was grossed out. I guess it's well water. The food was just all around disappointing. Crawfish étouffée that looked more like soup, some oyster app that sounded great, but was covered in an overwhelming cheese sauce (not Brie, as advertised). We had something that came with remoulade that tasted like remoulade, it was fine. Then we had something that the waitress claimed was remoulade on the side that tasted like mustard. Its really adjacent to a boat launch and dock but its a big place, lots of tables and a terrific view of the lake. This newly restored restaurant has high character and a scenic location, leading the charge for the area on hurricane IDA restorations in the area. This is a grand experience for special Louisiana cultural outings. Since the location is on lake Pontchartrain in an area easily exposed to the changing weather and lake conditions, this is surely an ever changing venue. You can see all the craft and care put into the external and internal decore, making this an original experience to continue to enjoy when in the area and time to pop in for a nice meal. On our particular spring day we enjoyed our food selections on the outside deck, enjoying the lake view to the east. The menu selections had fun Cajun flair to the selections and in my case an all day breakfast selection. Finally, we were seated. Another 15+ minutes before I flagged down a waitress asking for someone to come take our drink orders. I have visited this restaurant multiple time in the last two years. it was always wonderful until my last visit On 12/17/22. The staff was slow, it took forever to get our food. almost at times like we invisible. The food was very very disappointing to say the least. My server seated us and took out order, did not see her again. Had to keep getting attention of other staff for my ticket. Had to wait and wait to pay. They snuck a 20% gratuity on party of 4. Who does that for a party of 4. We were two couple paying separate checks. The appetizer was greasy and not enough for 4 people to share. Catfish fish was tough like and overcooked steak. fries were cold. Our friends were visiting Louisiana for the first time. This was not the place to impress out of state guests. My husband and I and two of our kiddos went Saturday for a late lunch, I haven't been here in probably six years, I always loved the location, atmosphere, and the food. Well Saturday it wasn't the same. The atmosphere and location are still great. My husband and I ordered the special which was blackened redfish with crawfish sauce, mashed potatoes, and steamed vegetables and it was pretty terrible. The fish looked like it was cooke nicely, but it was super dry and overcooked, it must have stayed under a light. The sauce was barely there and had one tiny crawfish tail in it and the mashed potatoes and asparagus had zero flavor. The charbroiled oysters came out in huge shells with tiny oysters and way too much cheese. The kids loved the fried stuff they got, so I guess that was a plus. The service was terrible, we sat for a good twenty minutes before we saw our waitress and once we did see her it was probably twenty to thirty minuets before we saw our drinks than another twenty to thirty before she took our order.... and it was just more of the same waiting until we ate and left. A couple of things to remember on your way here: a) if you miss the turn from the highway, you'll cross the Longest Bridge in America and not be able to turn around for another 25 miles and b) if you miss the turn into their parking lot you'll catapult straight into Lake Ponchatrain just like Burt Reynolds in "Gator". So it's not as easy to get to as your average Greasy Spoon. Food quality can be inconsistent with one huge exception: the grilled oysters. I'm no fan of oysters in any way, shape, or form, but they are incredible. So even if you're like me, stop in and give them a chance. Unlike so many other, uh, 'activities' in New Orleans, you won't regret it (or need a shot in a week). read more

Knowing nothing of LaPlace and running on a rather tight schedule, I researched on Yelp for good places to have lunch in the area after our swamp tour. I found Frenier Landing and was sold when I found out just how near they are from Cajun Pride Swamp Tours (as I said, tight schedule). The restaurant is located right by the water and I imagine that the view of New Orleans from across Lake Pontchartrain is magnificent, but it was a bit muggy on the day of our visit so I did not get to enjoy the full splendor of the view. Still, being by the water in a quiet little village with an interesting history* which our swamp tour guide told us about is not something one experiences on a daily basis. But history and setting really are not only what a great lunch make, right? The food and service have to be great also, and Frenier Landing delivered on these as well. Our waitress was very sweet and helpful and was very apologetic that there was no room in the area that has the New Orleans view (we were beat by a busload of Canadian tourists). But she found us seats by the water regardless, but with a view of Frenier. She made great recommendations and never let our water glasses go empty. We ordered the Oysters Frenier for our appetizer; the stuffed catfish, kid's hamburger, and BBQ shrimp for our entrees; and the Key Lime Pie for our dessert. All of them are delicious. The Oysters Frenier are perfectly cooked and the brie and spinach on top did not outshine the oysters. I would say it is a cross between Oysters Rockefeller and Charbroiled Oysters - both of which I am a fan of - and I will not hesitate to order them again if given the opportunity. As I am not a big fan of catfish, I only took a bite of it and I thought it was good. My cousin basically inhaled it, though, so I assume he liked it way more than I did. The hamburger looked alright and the daughter was satisfied but I cannot comment on that since I did not have a single bite. The star of the meal for me was the BBQ shrimp. This is the first time I have had it and for anyone who would jump to the conclusion that BBQ shrimp is most likely grilled (like yours truly did), this is a whole new kind of dish. The shrimps are cooked in this spicy, buttery sauce and I. Love. It. Every single bite was a delight and I can honestly say that I was frustrated that I could not eat at least five times more of what I ate that day. It was a messy eating experience but one of the dishes that I would request as my last meal on earth. Really. The Key Lime Pie was also good and I recommend it for dessert. The prices are reasonable and actually on the low side if one were to make comparisons to restaurants with similarly fantastic views elsewhere. I would love to go back when I get a chance. Came here just for oysters. After all it does say "oyster bar" in the name. Worst oyster bar I've ever been to! We had 2 dozen raw first and 1 dozen char-boiled. We came in on a Saturday around 5:30 and sat in the oyster bar part of the restaurant. I could see the guy shucking them right in front of me a few tables up. The waitress/bar tender brought our oysters from the other room.?? At first glance they looked disgusting. They were discolored and looked dried out and they were raw on the half shell (NOT what you want with freshly shucked oysters). We both looked at each other and then smelled a couple of oysters. They passed the smelled test and we ate them slowly. I don't think this place understands what an oyster bar is supposed to be..but when going to an oyster bar..people look forward to the FRESHLY shucked, salty,juicyness. What I figured out is they shuck their oysters ahead of time and keep them in a refrigerator with a napkin over them until they are ordered. Gross is what that means. The napkin soaks up all the juice. I know this because I saw someone pull a plate of them out of the bar frig and pull the napkin off the top. We ate them bc we were starving and they were expensive at $1a piece. Then our char-boiled ones came out. Even more disappointing. They arrived steaming hot and covered in so much parmesan cheese that it created a thick blanket over them. I love cheese and I have had char-grilled Oysters before and this is not what I expected. I ended up just peeling the layer of cheese back and eating the oyster. They are cooked under a broiler also not on a grill so they dont even have the chared flavor. To top it off they were served on a RUSTED silver tray. My bread and a couple oysters fell on to it and they were waisted. For $19 for a dozen(which is waay to high) that platter should have been a polished sterling silver platter. We drove an hour to eat here and we won't be back and will tell people to go elsewhere. Our server never asked"how we liked our food"...maybe its bc she knows the answer. $55 gone and I could buy a whole bushel of oysters and shuck then myself for that (actually a bushel costs$45!). read more

Saturday evening. We were looking for a place to eat on the water. Given all the water in the area, there are surprisingly few places to select from. Frenier Landing is a relatively new facility right on Lake Pontchartrain. There is probably 15 - 20 tables on the outside porch overlooking the lake. This is the second time I've been here. The view is spectacular. We arrived without a reservation at about 6:00. The place was about half filled and we were seated promptly outside on the deck. We had the last open table. In the next 30 minutes, the inside tables were filled. Service is friendly and quick. The menu is typical, the specials are numerous, almost too numerous to remember as the waitress rattled them off. Ditto the available alcoholic beverages. Is there some reason at least the beverages can't be on the menu? This meal confirmed my initial impression about the food. It is OK, The quality is a little uneven. Interesting mushroom/crab appetizer with really good sauce. My companion had a really good, imaginatively cooked piece of fish, but the sides (potatoes, fresh vegetables) were forgetable (with luck). My plate of Pasta Alfredo was edible, but nothing you couldn't whip up with boiling water, a box of noodles and a couple of cans of soup. Did I forget to mention they have a separate bar? Nice. Total meal for 2 with drinks and tip was $70. The view and atmosphere are worth the trip, the food is fine as long as your expectations are reasonable. 3 stars when the weather is good. read more

Took me almost a month to write this. Wanted to step back and think about it before I gave a place another 1 star review. Having said that: If you are having a big party rent out your restaurant, CLOSE the damned thing and don't try to shove everyone else into the Oyster bar area. That's just greedy and a disservice to your customers. Also, it would be easier to seat your customers if your waitresses were not all standing around the entrance blocking the host from even getting the customers INTO the room. They actually cut between the host who was leading us and US. Then started chatting. Never seen anything like that before. Not only did we have to wait 15 minutes for our tea (which tasted like brackish water), but then, after we ordered, we waited 45 minutes for the raw oyster appetizers (don't even remember what else we ordered since we never got it). This was after having to flag down the waitress just to remind her we still hadn't gotten ANYTHING. I saw her go up to a gentleman who was bringing those oysters to the other room and he gave them to her after she explained (I think she forgot to put in our orders, to tell the truth). When the oysters finally arrived, they were sulfury, warm to the touch, and inedible. At this point, people who came in 15 minutes after us had their food. Finally, the Girly had enough and she just wanted to go. Since i could not flag down our waitress, I waded through people to get to the bar and canceled our orders. Even though we ate 3 oysters out of 12, we were so sick of the experience, we didn't even ask for a discount, we paid and walked out. Mismanagement by the owners or managers left too few servers (or at least too few who were working and not standing around talking) for the number of people crammed into that room like sardines. Bad service, bad tea, possibly deadly raw oysters not kept cold enough. Right on the water and the oysters were an embarrassment. I can't really suggest this place to ANYONE. read more

The View is magnificent, but the food is run of mill for the area. Went on a Saturday afternoon. 4 people. Ordered drinks and char-grilled oysters. The oysters arrived long before the drinks. Couldn't taste any alcohol in any of the drinks (Bloody Mary, rum punch, martini) we ordered basic menu items. Catfish & shrimp. All 4 had dessert. The red velvet cheesecake is really good. The total bill was $140 My Take: Food was OK. Drink was less than OK, dessert was really good. Service, less than OK. Our first meal at a restaurant since lock down in March! This is the perfect place if you are older or at risk for Covid19 because of health issues. We made a reservation for early dinner outside at 4:00. There was only one other couple there because we went so early and we felt safe because we were outside and the servers and hostess wore masks and stood back from the table except when place items on it. We go there for our anniversary every year in January but this was our first time during the day. The view of the lake from the balcony is beautiful.
