Best mom n' pop donut shop in town. Their glazed donuts are extremely consistent (similar to Krispy kreme), which is unlike many small donut shops. Have tried their jelly donuts too, which are the best. One drawback- this isn't the cheapest donut place in the world. It's a little bit more expensive than most places at around $1 per donut (a dozen will run you about $10). There is an additional credit card fee too on small orders. read more

A TRUE LANDMARK! This is where the policemen come all hours of the day and night and I've seen lines around the outside of the store many times over the last decades. It is in a word INCREDIBLE. They make the world's greatest CREAM PUFFs (when they're not sold out) and their simple GLAZED DONUTS and DONUT HOLES are awesome! Also, their mini croissants are excellent as well as their heated stuffed ham and cheese croissants. Wonderful family operated business of the highest quality. The father starts making donuts himself at dawn every morning and the daughters and mother help at the counter in the mornings. I tried Ear's Donuts yesterday and Fresh Donuts today, and I'd pick Fresh Donuts over Earl's Donuts. I found little difference between the two, but Fresh Donut's bigger and better variety of donuts took the cake, so to speak. I'll be back. And... I visited again and again and again. My usual donut shop, which is a lot closer to my house, couldn't make 4-dozen glazed donuts with about 8 hours lead time for a party. I called Fresh Donuts because I saw they had good reviews, and they said they could whip 'em up no problem! And boy, did they deliver. The donuts were REALLY good. Very thick, and delicious. Only minor gripe is the service -- when I went to pick them up, there was only one person working the counter, and it seemed like no one else was in the kitchen; she had to box all 4-dozen up herself, and there were one or two people waiting for 3-4 minutes behind me. This review is just for the cronut. The regular donuts are pretty decent. The cronut was such a disappointment that it got thrown away. The outside looked like nice flaky layers. The inside tasted and looked like a regular donut - doughy, a little dense, with not much texture. Basically, the cinnamon cronut was a churro. read more

I'm always so disappointed when my family brings these donuts to our gatherings. The oil always tastes several days old and the donuts do not taste good because of that. The donuts are also extra oily which isn't pleasant. I won't eat them anymore because they look far better than they taste. Change your oil more often and your donuts will taste better. read more

These donuts were as the name suggests fresh. I was happily surprised by how pillowy soft the glazed donuts were. I also tried chocolate glaze, old fashion, sugar twist, and a few other offerings. My least favorite donut was the Cronut. The flavor was good but the texture was off. It was not light, flaky, or crispy. Embarrassed here: I didn't realize this place had an official name! Their donuts are really good, fluffy, chocolatey (for the chocolate hounds) and you really can't go wrong with whatever you choose that's hanging out on the large sheets behind the glass display case. I tried a Kronut [which I keep imagining with a Cro-Magnon eating a dozen] and yay, it was good! A friend used to take my daughter & his daughter to this donut shop just about every weekend where they'd get donuts and hang out. So she has many more memories of this place than I do. But they're fond memories. Tons of variety, nice people behind the counter and at the tables (lots of regulars) and good prices. I'm always surprised at how little I spend when I go in. There are 2 donuts shops on the corner of Balboa and San Fernando Mission. Go to the one that's busier. Psst...it's this place. Their selection is insane. They have all of your standard donuts (bars, twists, jellies), but they also carry a full arsenal of pasties, cakes, and other bakery fares. My God. If you are an indecisive soul...this place might be trouble for you. I couldn't recommend this place enough. This is what all coffee shops should aspire to one day become.
