Fresh Salt is a beautiful restaurant right on the Marina in Old Saybrook. I've been here several times in the past but I didn't realize it was Fresh Salt, until my most recent visit. There are so many beautiful boats to look at, and fantasize of a life if one of them was mine. We were quickly seated and given the menus. Wow!! This place is expensive... of course, it's the beautiful ambiance of the Marina that makes it so expensive. I didn't get a cocktail, because they were too expensive. I got a beer, I got Half Full Bright. It's a typical blonde ale, with a bit of a tartness. I got Ceviche and the rest of the party got a few servings of calamari and their kettle chips. The calamari was just average, a bit greasy for me personally, but not bad. When my ceviche arrived I was in shock, this was the tinniesssttt serving of Ceviche I've seen in my life, and they charge $20 for it. The container it arrived is I'm sure the same one they use for their one scoop of ice cream or maybe a generous shot glass, I'm not kidding, it was tiny.. I was really mad. It was pretty good, I couldn't even enjoy it, it was gone by spoon two. It had shrimp, avocado, cilantro, pretty tasty till it was gone. Very cute location - but overall not a great dining experience. After being seated, we waited a good chunk of time for wait staff to show up to the table. Young, friendly and apologetic waitress took our drink order. She then promptly brought back drinks, took our food order and returned immediately with some yummy looking ciabatta rolls... that was the highlight of the meal. Before putting butter on the bread - someone else brought the meals and gruffly placed them on the table and took off. There was no possible way anyone could have had time to make them to order... and it was fried fish and fried seafood - something we indulge once a year. My plate was really hot to the touch - it had to be residual from a heat lamp that the meal had scorched under long before I placed my order. The fish was mildly warm, and bland. The fries were floppy, greasy, seemed reheated and not enjoyable. My companion's fried seafood platter appeared to have been cooked more recently - but the grease pooled on top of the fried clams and calamari was visible from across the table. Her fries had more of a crispness to them - but also had residual grease from the seafood. I did have one of the fried shrimp - that was a decent size and texture with good flavor, minus the extra greasy batter. Maybe it was an off night, or the later hour we arrived (9:00). Maybe our expectations were too high to have been served freshly fried food - but it was kind of inedible and not delicious. Summer indulgence misfire... can't recommend it and likely won't return. We spent over $100 on two drinks and super greasy fried seafood and left feeling sad about it. Leaving on a positive note - I do want to give props to the ciabatta rolls, at least. read more

My husband and I stopped in to Fresh Salt for a bite to eat, and decided to have dinner at the bar. They were extremely busy for a mid-day Sunday timeframe, so the bar services was a bit backed up. That said the drinks were perfect and Peter was an amazing mixologist and server! We ordered the regular calamari, which was crispy, tender and flavorful - just the way we like it! On the way to the restaurant I looked at the menu for beef options because I was in the mood for a steak. When I arrived, I realized the menu was slightly different with a NY Strip rather than (my preferred) tenderloin cut. As I was trying to determine my Plan B for an entree, Peter told us about the seared halibut over lobster risotto with a burre blanc sauce. Ding ding - sounded amazing and it WAS. It was absolute perfection on a plate, and could be worthy of a James Beard award! The chef who created this fabulous dish came out to meet us after we sent accolades back to the kitchen. As foodies, we are always thrilled to meet the chef! My husband had the duck, which was cooked to perfection and very tasty. He did comment to me that the carrots were a bit 'al dente' and slightly undercooked, but overall really enjoyed his meal. And, some of mine as well! The burger is really really good. The fish specials with lobster rissoto have been a hit on multiple occasions. The chicken dish is good. Siriacha Calamari app is amazing. Caesar salad was a big disappointment flavor wise. Swordfish has been hit or miss depending on how it is served (changes each season) Cioppino is good but could be better. Pork chop is prepared expertly and tender - but the flavor was not my favorite because the bacon brought out a hot dog flavor. The cocktails could be made better. Sometimes they are too boozy. Came here for lunch during a spa day. I Was so excited for this lunch as the menu items all sounded amazing. We had the salt burger which was amazing but the French fries were soggy and undercooked. A definite disappointment when we paid to upgrade to the truffle fries. I would have asked for them to be re done but our server Shania never came back until we were done eating. We were offered bread when we ordered and it never came. I love bread at restaurants so again another disappointment. The mangotini did not disappoint and the eggplant caprese sandwich was quite good. For the price of the food the service was lack luster. Very slow service when it was not busy. My daughter had the mussels and there were so many that were empty and it was a very small portion. My husband and I had burgers which were good but we opted for the fries instead of the potato chips. They were very soggy and we asked for extra crispy. We were charged for the large Caesar salad and only received the small. The waiter never checked back to see if we wanted another drink. Took my in laws to Fresh Salt for Father's Day. They tried to seat us at a table under the tent with no view, even though plenty of water view tables were available. I asked if we could move and it took them about 5 minutes to figure it out, but they did move us. We were also sad to find out that the BBQ special publicized online had ended just an hour or two before we arrived. It was fine, but my father in law had been looking forward to it. Ordered cocktails to start. I ordered a key lime pie martini. It was 13.95. The server spilled a significant amount of it on the way to the table. It also didn't taste like alcohol at all, or lime for that matter. It tasted like pineapple juice. It looked like pineapple juice. It was a sticky mess from being sloshed around. And it was 13.95. We ordered some shrimp cocktail to start ($5 each) and they were good. I was glad I asked for extra horseradish though because the cocktail sauce was bland. With the extra horseradish though it was perfect! Calamari appetizer was good as well. For entrees, my mother in law and I both ordered the linguini pasta with shrimp. It had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. I needed salt - and I'm not one who salts my food. I cook with other spices at home so that salt isn't needed. So when I need salt, it's bad. It took about 10 minutes before anyone even came to check on us, and then another 5 minutes to get salt and cheese. It helped a little, but not much. For $29 for a small dish of food, I'd expect it to be on point for flavor. My father in law said he liked his fish and chips, though he barely ate any, so I'm not sure. My husband ordered a steak. He was very happy with it and his roasted potatoes and broccoli rabe were the highlights of the meal for me. He doesn't like broccoli rabe, so I took it and cut it up and mixed it into my dish to try to add some flavor. It's a pretty setting, but they missed on service, drinks, and flavor of some of the dishes. It wasn't even that busy, so it's not like service suffered due to being slammed for Father's Day. With the tables already spaced out, they were still less than half full outside, and inside was pretty much empty. I really don't mind spending a lot for a nice dinner, but there were more misses than hits this night, and I regretted choosing this as the spot to bring my in laws for a special occasion. I won't be quick to go back. Having been there in the past several times, I would say prices have gone up and quality has gone down since I was last there. read more

Off season is the perfect time to enjoy this restaurant. It is so quiet and quaint this time of year. We really enjoyed the food atmosphere and the service. It is a bit pricey but we would definitely do it again however we would go back between Thanksgiving and Christmas to see how they decorated it since we were there one week before Thanksgiving and they had just started. As for the lobster roll my husband had he Really enjoyed it. There was so much lobster in the roll that he had to keep putting the lobster back in the roll before he could pick it up. The cheese board was amazing and I would absolutely do it again. I chose not to get any meats with it and chose to get three of the extra large shrimp cocktail with it. They were amazing. read more

The restaurant is located in the Saybrook Point Resort & Marina. As you enter the Resort, you bear to the left to go to Fresh Salt restaurant & Bar. For the Choo Choo Lounge, you bear to the right and around. Straight ahead, there are several banquet rooms. There is also a terraced outside Marina Bar in front of the Choo Choo Lounge. I really like the options here. Basically 3 nice bars & a indoor restaurant & 2 patio areas to dine. The view is great from each area. They all have a really nice flow to them. You can order anything from the Fresh Salt menu in each area. The restaurant & large bar in Fresh Salt is club like with dark wood paneling. They have a great beer, wine, & cocktail list with top shelf offerings of each. The drinks are expertly prepared. The menu has a great varied range of offerings: starters, salads, soups, handhelds, entrees & desserts. I had roast halibut one time with mashed potatoes & sautéed garlic spinach. It was expertly cooked & delicious. Another time, I had the roast half chicken, mashed potatoes & sautéed green beans. Very nicely executed: chicken was moist with a crispy skin & had great flavor. I had the chocolate flourless cake which was rich, decadent & divine. I will always recommend this location to family, friends & relatives visiting in the area. It was a special occasion so my wife chose this place to spend nice afternoon together. It was a great choice because our experience was great! If you like to dine outside but can't due to weather (too hot, or too cold, or rainy), they have porch seating with nice ocean view from windows. We ordered Fresh Salt Cioppino. This might be a most expensive entree on their menu but definitely worth it!! One dinner portion is good for two adults. Amazing New Year's Brunch and Excellent Service! After having brunch reservations at a nearby restaurant and walking out because of the negative attitude of the staff we called Fresh Salt on a whim. Turns out they have an amazing New Year's Brunch! You could eat for hours without eating the same thing twice... The selection of dishes was amazing, from traditional breakfast items, charcuterie, fruit, baked goods, various carving stations, tacos, shrimp, oysters, mussels to a range of lunch dishes, everything was great. And there was a very tempting selection of desserts. Specialty coffees and mimosas, as well as Bloody Mary's rounded out the brunch experience. Service was excellent, very attentive and friendly, and a 180 degree change from what we experienced at the other place just an hour earlier.
