Frita was a great choice for a meal before catching a show at the Fillmore. I have been to their Ann Arbor location, and while part of me wanted to eat something that was uniquely Detroit based, it was comforting to have a taste of home on this expedition. Plus it allowed me the chance to try some more items on their menu. Like what? Well, this was my first time trying their "Best Snack Ever". For those who don't know this is base of coconut ginger rice, topped with black beans, covered with melted munster cheese, and crowned with cilantro-lime salsa. It covers a lot of bases, and not only is it packed full of complete vegetarian protein, but it is super satisfying. As I expected, this "snack" was hearty enough for a light meal all on its own. Which isn't to say I didn't get a bite of my daughter's burger. She is a great sharer, but the bite came largely because my kid who wanted her burger plain, and asked for the chili-mayo and fries on the side, ended up with a chili-mayo spill on the burger itself. A dad's job is to take the undesirable bites, so I was happy to help. The burger, while unadorned, was certainly not plain. That's a tasty beef patty. Asking for the fries which usually come on the sandwich, to be served on the side, is a great move. While it can be fun to have fries on any sandwich, I do prefer to enjoy them on their own, or dipped into some of that chili-mayo. Besides the sloppiness of the food served, the only other downside was the ginger lime juice. Man, that was bracing. Perhaps it is supposed to be bracing. It will definitely wake you up. But it's not something I will be ordering again. I feel like the recipe could use a little bit of tinkering. After cutting it with water, I found it started to become a bit more palatable. More than anything, I appreciate the speed of service. Being able to order and pay at the counter, so we could eat and be on our way to the show, was a major plus. If ordering a batido, it's made & given while waiting to reach the register. A shot of rum can be added so you'd have a boozy milkshake! Once at the register, give your protein choice (single or double), desired toppings & sides, and more drinks if wanted. Seating is in the form of community picnic benches inside and out. Condiments, napkins, small cups. & water containers are in a depression in the center of the tables. There are no garbage cans for you to dispose of your own trash. A must stop! The location is perfect for before or after an event or really anytime. But it is within walking distance from the arenas and theatres that surrounds Frita Batidos. We stopped here before a concert at Comerica Park and it was much better than ballpark food! Lots of communal type picnic tables outside and inside. Two area where you can stand and eat as well. The line was pretty long when we got here but eventually it went out the door. The staff were working so hard! Staff members were quickly clearing tables, re-filling waters, calling out orders, and making drinks. However, I don't get why they don't have garbage's to dispose of your food (unless they do and I completely missed it but the place was packed)? I wouldn't mind throwing out my garbage rather than waiting for a staff member to grab it. Or in our case we had to claim our spot to sit and that included garbage from the patrons before. Finding a spot to sit was a bit challenging but with the communal tables you make friends fast. The menu has a lot of interesting options and there seems to be something for everyone. You order at the cash register and let know if you are sitting inside or outside. Then a staff member screams out your name and they come over to bring you your food. My husband and I both went with fritas which are inspired by traditional Cuban burgers. I ordered the black bean with cilantro lime salsa while my husband stuck with a chicken frita. We also ordered sides of tropical coleslaw, shoestring fries, and coconut-ginger rice. Drink wise ordered the lighter batido and water is provided at the table which is a convenient touch. The food was absolutely amazing especially for more of a quick order place. Flavors were fresh and delicious! The black bean frita was awesome especially for those non-meat eaters, it is a great option. The black bean packs a punch. Love the fries on top of the frita as well. It is a little messy but there are a whole stack of napkins on the table. The slaw was refreshing but also had a nice spicy kick to it. The rice was a good portion and tasty. Everything was great! First time to the Detroit location and it was basically empty which is never the case at the AA location. I tried the fish frita "make it loco" style and got the passion fruit batido. I can never eat these like a proper burger with my hands and always end up eating with a fork since everything seems to want to spill out as these burgers are LOADED and packed with yummy flavors! Their garlic cilantro fries are bomb. Their batidos (Cuban tropical milkshakes) are nothing like American milkshakes. They're better! So I really wanted to try this place. Unfortunately my first visit was the day of the Taylor Swift concert which meant there was large crowds in the area. No big deal. There was a long line when I arrived about 30+ people waiting to order. I waited approximately 30 min to place my order. I ordered a beef frita and the plantains. The food took awhile before it was ready but we played dominoes at the table while we waited. The reason I am giving this a 3 star is because I specifically asked for a well done burger and what I received was just the opposite. I didn't snap a picture because it was so bad that I immediately took it back and had it remade but I don't think it was even safe to eat to be honest the amount of bright pink beef that I was served. I'm in town taking my daughter to see her first metal show and she loves burgers. So as we were walking around we noticed this restaurant in a very comfortable walking only like street area. There was a sign that said "voted best burgers" so naturally we had to try it. Ordering is very custom and for my daughter was easy (bacon cheeseburger) but for me I was a tad overwhelmed by all the great looking options so I asked the employee for help. After he mentioned a few of his ideas I just told him to build the way he would eat it. I had the chorizo with an egg and slaw and it was delicious. My daughter couldn't stop saying yum while she was eating hers. We also split some of the fried plantains. A nice little sweet snack along with the burgers. This place also serves beer so I washed down with a nice cold Modelo while my daughter pretended with a bottles Fanta. It was a great experience and we really enjoyed it. On this visit I had the chorizo burger with the "make it loco" option ... great call as you get a scrumptious burger topped with a mountain of flavors, including a fried egg. This was my first time trying this place, and although finding parking was hard since it was located downtown, the food here was pretty good. The chorizo frita bun was nicely toasted but it was a bit soggy. However, the flavor was pretty good since the salty chorizo was balanced with the "loco style" spice and veggies that come with the burger. The fried plantains had good flavor, but they could've added a bit of crunch to them. Their sauce that comes with the plantains was nice to balance the sweetness of the plantains. This review is for the Frita Batidos Airstream, while Frita Batidos Detroit is closed during the pandemic (currently planning to reopen Spring 2021). Frita Batidos is my favorite restaurant by a LONG SHOT. It's the best place ever & now I can finally say I've tried all their locations! The airstream was the last thing I needed to check out & thankfully it is so conveniently located adjacent to the Midtown Dog Park that my dog & I decided to make an afternoon of it! My dog had a blast playing at the dog park & then afterwards we stopped by Fritas (they don't allow human food in the dog park) for me. Sadly, the airstream has a limited menu, so I couldn't go for what I normally go for - the fish frita & lighter batido. But it allowed me to try a different frita - the black bean one - which is, unsurprisingly, AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS! I think every time I've been to Fritas, I have gone for the fish frita, so for the first time I was forced to try something different, and the result was still incredible, which just solidifies how awesome Frita Batidos is! Fun tip: They also have pup cups available for your pooches - both savory & sweet options! How incredible is that?! The wife and I came here after seeing the Van Gogh Immersive Experience (courtesy of Yelp :-). Got super busy after we came in which was before 6pm with line wrapped around inside the entire time we were there. I've been to the one in Ann Arbor but didn't know there was one here in the D. I mainly wanted to get the ginger lime drink which comes in a pouch but I opted for the lime batido. Bad choice haha. It was sour which is expected but not as icy (almost creamy/yogurt like texture. Perhaps it melted or something. My wife's Hibiscus flavor was a lot better - icy and mildly sweet. For the food, my Pulled pork Bowl was pretty good overall (minus the burned pork pieces). The slaw gave it a little tang and spicy which I appreciated. I went with the half rice half salad since I expected it to be over seasoned but it was actually just right so maybe next time I'll get the salad instead of rice as the bed since the rice was inconsistent in texture. Also liked touch of spring onions and cilantro to add to the herbiness. The beef frida was pretty good too but heavy. Lots of carbs and fat haha. Gotta cut that with the acid of the lime batido. Also they gotta figure out how to keep the sauce inside the burger cuz it keeps dripping out into the bun wrapper. Really like the fried egg with crispy edges and runny yolk that's inside though! My friend and I stumbled across this place while looking for a spot to get a drink before the Anita Baker concert at LCA. It was so bright and inviting from the outside so we decided to take a look. I started with a margarita and my friend got a hibiscus lemonade and added tequila. Both were tasty, not strong but refreshing. This was my first time having conch fritters and they were delicious. The salsa served with it is a bit spicy but gives a great balance. The chicken frita is ground chicken not a chicken breast. This was a pleasant surprise and was full of flavor. I added some of the salsa from the fritters to the sandwich and it went to a new level. The staff was friendly and explained the menu. I will definitely be back to try one of the Batidos. read more

I used to love Frita's and have been a loyal customer at both the Ann Arbor and Detroit locations, but today I was lied to and taken advantage of. I placed a small order for pickup via DD. When I arrived to pickup my lunch, they told me they couldn't fulfill my order because they were out of beef. "Ok no problem, but please cancel my order then." After over a half hour of hiding in the back of house, the manager told me to my face that he cancelled my order. 2 hours later, I get an email saying my order was picked up and I was charged for it. There were a lot of acceptable solutions: Refunding my order, cancelling my order through DD, even just offering to make it another day (I work next door and see the staff often.) Lying to me about cancelling it and then claiming I picked it up is FRAUD. read more

Took me a minute to find, my GPS had me a block over. It is in the same walkway as Jojos shake bar and Sahara. I was greeted quickly and warmly upon entering . I ordered the fish Frita with tropical slaw and asked if it was fried or grilled fish. They said it is a ground fish burger-like patty. The fish Frita also came with lemon scented mayo. I also ordered the coconut cream batido, coconut-ginger rice and twice fried plantains. My total For everything was $28.00. When ordering, I asked what was the difference between the twice fried plantains and the crisped plantains and he said the crisped plantain were more like a plantain chip and they make them fresh. The twice fried plantains are more of a traditional plump plantain. It is very cute side and they have plenty of space inside and out. All the tables are long benches and they have cutouts with water, cups, sauces, napkins etc. I wish they had hand sanitizer in them as well. They also have dominoes set up with instructions on how to play. Super cute! The coco cream batido was delicious and creamy. Just the right amount of sweetness and a ton of coconut, I definitely made the right choice. I think smoothie straws would be the better option for sipping them though, because they are so thick. They gave my regular straw a challenge lol. I didn't know my Frita came with fries, they were hot crispy and seasoned to perfection. The fish Frita was amazing and I'm glad I selected it and the tropical slaw a perfect accompaniment to it. The Frita was hot, fresh and pretty big. The plantain portions were generous with four huge chunks of plantain and they were some of the best I've had. I think I would have liked them a little crispier but nonetheless they were exquisite. The plantains came with a sauce that was pretty tasty but honestly they were good all on their own. The coconut ginger rice was probably my least favorite. I really only ordered it because I didn't know my sandwich came with fries. It was tasty, the seasoning was light but still flavorful but I think it didn't quite flow with my other items I ordered. I'm a huge fan of the Ann Arbor Frita Batidos, so I was glad to hear they were opening one in Detroit. I went here with some friends yesterday before the Sara Bareilles concert at the Fox. The menu is pretty similar to the A2 location, as is the setup (communal seating - picnic benches). They might have an expanded drink menu, I'm not sure. I went with my usual stand-by, the beef frita with a side of garlic-cilantro fries (those fries are among the best in the metro area btw, if not THE best). They come with some sort of sweet chili mayo dipping sauce. I also ordered a hot sangria, which was very good, and which oddly looked about 2x as large as the regular (cold) sangria, which I saw others drinking ... I'll take it. The reason I'm giving 4 stars and not 5 is there are a few picky things they can still work out - it took forever to get our food, probably because it was so busy, and I had ordered first out of our group of three but got mine last (my theory on this is that they gave me a double Frita by accident - I had ordered a single burger). They also have outdoor seating, which is nice, and some heat lamps, but the heat lamp is in the middle of the seating area, rather than near any of the tables. Other than that, I look forward to returning here for some tasty noms before a Fox concert - there was also a side entrance to the Fox in the same alleyway that we were able to go through, which was super easy and convenient. read more

What makes a burger a burger? Is it simply a matter of a piece of red meat between two slices of bread? Is it a stricter definition, it is rounded ground beef between two buns as the base model for what you're calling a burger? Can something that is plant based be called a burger? These questions and many more were debated for well over two hours during the work day amongst a group of my friends and myself. At the end of the day, the vast majority decided that fritas, even though called the Cuban hamburger, are not actually hamburgers. I stood my ground and insisted that they indeed were, as fritas met all the requirements. So why do I tell you this story? Is it to show off that our work days are consumed with chitter chatter of topics with minimal importance in life? Is it because I want to establish that I did indeed eat a burger and not refer to it as a frita the entire time? More than likely (100% likely) it is because I had a very disappointing experience here and was delaying writing this. Let me first say, I was a fan of this place from it's Ann Arbor location. Maybe it's my memory going bad or just living in nostalgia, but I don't remember the food being so dry and cold when served before. My frita was completely flavorless, crumbled under the weight of the burned carbon covering it and was really cold. The garlic fries, once again were very cold and squishy. Does anyone want to eat squishy fries? I know I like a nice snap to them when I take a bite, but squishy... gross. There are only few things on this planet that are great squishy and fries aren't one of them. Squishy. What a funny word. Then a churro and cinnamon plantains were ordered. Guess what they came out cold. Even worse, as a mad lover of churros, I couldn't believe how poorly made this one was. It was dough heavy, about the size and weight of one of those small bats you get at baseball games, and so hard to chew through. The plantains weren't any better. Chewy chewy chewy and hard to swallow. While I can get past the community seating, luckily it was dead that day and seating was no problem, and curt service by the staff, I can't handle poorly made food. The one thing I will say was that chicken sandwich that was ordered tasted great even though it wasn't warm. I get that it wasn't busy that day, so food might sit out a little longer, but at least pretend to try and throw it in the microwave or something. Blah. read more

Enjoyed my experience at the Detroit location! Was quite busy before a Tigers game - waited in line to order food/drinks and they bring your items to your table/call out you name to pick up food. It was a little hard to grab your food as it was very packed and difficult to hear your name called out. Other than that - the food was good! I really enjoyed the conch fritters (seasonal) that came with 3 dips. The frita was good, loaded with fries. I wasn't the biggest fan of the egg bun but it was still good! The service and the ambiance here is excellent. What I was disappointed in was the abysmal lack of options for a vegan eater.
