Food was fantastic and service was friendly. Sat outside on a beautiful sunny day. The place was packed so get ready to wait. The wait was really fast tho. Food was delicious and hot. I ordered the corned beef hash and eggs. They give big portions and the corned beef is fresh and cooked to perfection. I enjoy a little crisp on the beef. My partner ordered the huevos rancheros. He devoured the whole dish and enjoyed every flavor. We love to bring our dog with us on our many adventures and this place is very dog friendly. They have a doggie menu and ordered scrambled eggs. Our dog loved them. They give big portions so we were able to take some home. Great place. I'd come back again

Best pancakes I've ever had! We stopped in Carmel during a recent Highway 1 trip and stumbled upon this gem while looking for a brunch spot. My husband and I shared the Triple D Sampler and banana walnut pancakes, along with a latte. Everything was delicious, and there was so much food! The chili was especially flavorful, with tender brisket, and the pancakes were incredible. We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather. There was a short wait, but my kids had fun browsing the shop while we waited, and they even found a few reasonably priced activity items for the road. Great food, friendly atmosphere, and definitely a must-visit when in the area!

We had an incredible experience at this pet friendly restaurant! Not only that, but our Frenchie whose name is Bubbles got to meet a server also nicknamed Bubbles. Picture attached. We had the corn beef and hash. It had amazing flavor with huge chunks of corn beef. It was absolutely delicious. We also had a bowl of their chili brisket. Fantastic flavor, and lots of chunky brisket. I did have them heat it up prior to being delivery. I like all my liquid meals, extra hot. Just a personal preference. It was still delivered lukewarm. If there was one thing I would say, because this place was incredible from the servers to the food and to the fact that they allow pets. It would be to the young lady that cleaned and straightened tables and her RBF. You're working at an incredible restaurant, with incredible food, in an incredible town. SMILE!! Enjoy your surroundings and all the people around you. Life is short and a smile won't hurt you. AND it will bring smiles to all of the people around you. You're beautiful.

We visited because this restaurant was on Diner's Drive ins and Dives, so we had to get the Triple D plate! The portions are huge and so delicious. There's a variety of sides for each dish too. My favorite was the fried grits ; it might be my favorite breakfast side ever! The bowl of chili on the triple D plate was also massive. We also had the French toast which was a nice balance of sweetness with all the savory foods. There was 45 min wait when we got there on a Sunday afternoon, but we just walked around the plaza and got a coffee while we waited. Theres tons of outdoor seating, and very dog friendly. Would definitely return!

We stuffed ourselves here but loved every bit of it. My husband ordered biscuits and gravy, with eggs and potatoes and a side of chili! I ordered eggs, potatoes and potatoes and we shared the churros/ cinnamon pancake! We still talk about that pancake- it was just right on the cinnamon and sugar. Service was super friendly and attentive. We did arrive right when they opened, good thing because quickly this place had a wait list! Plan accordingly and enjoy your service and meal!

Woah! This was seriously one of the best breakfasts I've had in a while! The portions are HUGE, so definitely come hungry! I don't usually love chili, but theirs was SO good and honestly a must-try! The location is pretty tight, which I wasn't the biggest fan of, but the service was quick and the staff were super friendly!

Really tasty breakfast spot in Carmel that definitely gets busy, so expect a wait during peak times. The food was worth it though, and everything tasted fresh and homemade like the name suggests. Loved the little store attached to the restaurant too. It was fun to browse after eating. The surrounding shopping area is also really nice to walk around and explore. A highlight for my daughter was the Mickey Mouse pancake! Overall a solid stop if you're visiting Carmel and looking for a good breakfast or brunch spot.

Wow, what a delicious and fun breakfast spot! We came in on a Thursday around 11:30 am and were able to be immediately seated. It was quite busy outside, but we found a nice spot in the shade. Once we started to order, a lot of the people started to leave and there was only a couple other parties outside. For once I was hungry AND actually able to order while thinking about portion sizes. Normally my eyes are more hungry than my stomach! I had one banana walnut pancake and still couldn't finish it. My partner ordered the breakfast skillet with chorizo, mushrooms, and avocado. Both were exceptionally delicious, and the skillet especially with their homemade bottled pepper sauce. It's available to purchase but they ran out when we were visiting. The pancake had bananas or walnuts in every bite, if not both. The maple syrup was also heated up so it made for a very pleasant experience. I'm normally a savory breakfast gal, but this called to me, and I'm so glad I went with it. And the skillet wasn't that spicy but packed tons of flavor. I could taste some smoke paprika, garlic powder, and a pleasant amount of salt and pepper. We enjoyed our time here, and since the business was slowing down, we were able to chat with our waiter and get some ideas for local spots to try. 10/10, we will be back again! :) Thank you so much!

On a recent trip to the Bay Area we had a chance to swing by the Monterey Peninsula on the way south and visit with a dear friend. This "young lady" and I have been great pals since 4th grade, and that was quite a while ago. Ahem! She's lived in Carmel since the early 80's and knows so many great places to go. She recommended From Scratch as a good spot to meet for breakfast. On a foggy morning, we parked on the exterior of The Barnyard and took a meandering path to find the restaurant. I had actually dined in that space many, many years ago. I don't even recall what it was called at that time. The From Scratch iteration is wonderful! It's cozy and charming on the inside. I didn't end up taking many pix inside as they were so consistently full of patrons that I didn't want to intrude on people's meals. They also have an outdoor patio area, which is kept warm by heaters, but my friend had scored a table inside near the fireplace, and that turned out to be a perfect place. The menu has all the breakfast favorites, but with their own little creative twists. It was hard to narrow down to a final choice of what to order. Service was excellent throughout, and our server had a just-right sense of humor. The portions are enormous!!! Dear Hubby and I could have easily split one plate and would have gone away completely full. If one is going to order whichever dish you choose, unless you haven't eaten for a week, I would plan that you'll be taking away leftovers. Their homemade sausage patties were superb with a subtle sweet taste that complimented the savory meat. Thick, fluffy French toast was so delicious with real maple syrup to drizzle on top. DH fully enjoyed his biscuits and gravy. I don't know how he ate as much as he did, but I did do most of the driving in the afternoon while he napped off that breakfast! It was so divine to visit with my sweet friend in such a lovely atmosphere while eating delicious food. What a wonderful start to the day! I can see this being a draw for locals and visitors alike.

Omg the breakfast was so delicious! The pancakes were huge, but super yummy! I can't remember exactly what the hubby's breakfast was called, so sorry, but we loved it as well and the portions are enormous! Food Ordered the Triple D Sampler (biscuits and gravy, with eggs and a cup of brisket chili) - yum! I think the chili was my favorite part - flavorful and good texture. The gravy for the biscuits and gravy was spiced well. My husband got the cinnamon roll pancakes and a side of a bacon. He was pleased with his meal. Pancakes were huge! Our lattes were pleasant - good presentation and flavor. Service Our server was patient, friendly, and informative. Ambiance The restaurant had an elevated diner vibe, nothing felt dated. I saw that they had a homemade mole for their breakfast burritos. Would definitely come back to try that out.

Great food. LAZY waiter! Went in a group of 12 and he put it all in one ticket. Maybe we were out of our element where one person pays for everyone's meal but come on, we don't like each other that much. So here we are doing math behind the ticket with a pen to split OUR OWN meals. With a 500.00+ check. Just go with three people or less. He stated "I can't split it after it's already rung up" no one asked for the ticket in the first place. LAZY. Great food though. read more

Two words - FRIED GRITS. service was great and attentive and the food was amazing. Found this place on Yelp while visiting Carmel for the weekend and it wa a hidden gem tucked away on the ground floor of an old wooden framed two story building called "The Barnyard". Everything was hot and fresh and delicious. He had the chili and said it was some of the best he's had. Coming from a Texan, that should tell you something. It's almost worth the drive from SoCal just to get breakfast here again! read more

Disappointing. The huevos rancheros dish was like a plate of nachos with an egg on top. The Florentine scramble was over-cooked/too salty. Their cheese biscuit (which they tout) was a bit dry & bland. Staff was nice. read more

This is one of our go-to places whenever we are in Carmel. The food is fresh and delicious, and there are a good variety of healthy choices. I'm partial to their omelets made wit egg whites , lots of fresh veggies and vegetarian sausage, but there is something here for everyone's taste. Most breakfast entrees are served with roasted red potatoes and a choice of really good toast. Also, if you haven't tried their chili, it's a must. read more

Went here with some family and friends and we all really enjoyed it. First of all the service was great! We had two kids with us and they catered to them immediately. I recommend the Mexican Eggs Benedict and the Banana Granola Pancake, they were both delicious! Can't wait to come back here someday! P.S. The most amazing pancakes we have ever had! The cinnamon roll pancakes are to die for! The service was so personable and the ambiance was so chill and relaxed. We were in big sur for three days and we went back all three days to have breakfast! When you have had the best breakfast ever, why chance it somewhere else! The icing on the cake was having the BEST waitress I've ever had, "Bubbles" is her name and definitely her energy and service, we just adored her! You will love it! read more

Solid breakfast of champions before hiking point lobos. We each had a slightly different skillet and all were fantastic...but a LOT of food so I'd probably split one next time. The potatoes are seasoned so perfectly and the CHEESEY BISCUIT well, I just about died and went to heaven. I was stuffed and still ate it. The hosts were so sweet and they let us wander while we waited for our table. The coffee was smooth and free refills :) I'd definitely go back! read more

We had excellent service by our waiter Gerald and the food was great. I would give them 5 stars except it was quite cold out and they kept 2 doors open in spite of 4 of us and 2 other customers at another table asking to have the doors closed. Dress for the outdoors. read more

We have been going to this place for a number of years as it is one of our favorite breakfast spots in the area. We vacation in Carmel annually and restaurant prices are typically steep. This is no exception but they are cheaper than some others in the area. We normally bring our dog with us and this spot is dog friendly. Since it was a cold morning, we planned on sitting near a heater. When we arrived, we found that they no longer had heaters. We learned that prior patrons had broken them all and staff were working on getting some attached to beams on the courtyard. Our meals were good, as always. We ordered eggs Benedict, sausage Benedict, French toast and pumpkin pancakes. All items were enjoyed. However, we were charged for extra hollandaise sauce, along with $7 for ONE pancake! read more

Some of the best breakfast I've ever had! And done of the nicest folks cooking/serving it. I went with the Veggie Florentine with Fried Cheesy Grits, and it was to die for Everything was scrumptious-right down to the strawberry jam and bottomless, piping hot coffee. My mom enjoyed the Breakfast Roll, and said the tomatillo and mole sauces on the top were divine. We were the only party eating outside, since we had my dog with us, and they were only too happy to accommodate us. The head chef even came out to ask us how everything was, and couldn't be more friendly. This is our new must-go breakfast spot! read more

This place was YUMMY! We sat outside because it was much faster to get seated. Most of us ordered custom skillets which were delicious! I highly recommend getting a runny egg over the top and the homemade biscuit! read more

I have eaten at From Scratch twice now and each time this place did not disappoint. I had the Pattymelt and it was served on marbled rye and the sandwich was so big I could only eat half. I have also had breakfast here, biscuits and gravy which were good as well. Our waitress Karen aka Bubbles was very sweet, and funny! and she checked on us several times through our meal. Our food came out less than 10 minutes after we ordered it which seemed to happen at all the restraunts we ate at while in Carmel. read more

Normally this place is pretty darn good. Ordered the Huevos Rancheros this time because I haven't tried theirs before. Chips were stale and definitely not fresh. The coffee we got seemed watered down and was warm at best. The sausage Benedict my friend ordered was ok, hollandaise sauce was bland like they didn't season it. I know it's Covid, but it's like they didn't even try. Better luck next time read more

Wow! Food was great! Staff said 25 minute wait so we decided to look around the outside mall area. Most businesses closed due it being a Sunday. Within 15 minutes we were texted that our table was ready. Bubbles (our waitress) took our order and she made some great suggestions. We ordered Corned beef hash with fried cheesy grits, New York Steak and eggs, Pebble beach omelette and Carmel omelette. Everything was excellent and made from "Scratch" hehe, like how I did that! Boom! So funny! If your in Carmel by the Sea, you must come here and eat! They have been featured on "Diners Drive Ins and Dives" 5 Stars fo sho! Lol. read more

Breakfast was good just not worth the almost $100 (with tip)we paid for 5 breakfasts. 4 of us got the extreme biscuits and gravy and fried potatoes. Was very good and a good portion. My wife got the eggs Benedict, she said it was just your standard order no better or worse then our local diners. Cute place with nice outdoor patio that allows you to bring your dog. Not sure that I can recommend, only because eggs and biscuits shouldn't cost any more then $10 per person. This was almost $20 per. read more

So I was looking for a nice place for a business meeting that also allowed dogs. I have been here for breakfast and thought I would give it a try. First of all, when I went to sit in the large outdoor area a waiter came out "No, you can't sit there with dogs. The city says you have to sit over here to the side". There was no one seated in the large outdoor area with the heat lamps, but he moved me over to the side where there were no heat lamps. OK, so the city says this, it seems weird, but I guess I understand. But a half an hour later a couple comes in with the exact same breed of dog, and they are allowed to sit in this area with no disruption. Strike one. Then, we order our meals and ask for a heater and my companion asked for a glass of water. 10 minutes pass. We receive neither. Finally we are able to track down the waiter. He says he will have someone bring the heater. Another 5 minutes until we get either the heater or the water. Strike 2. The waiter brings our meals and I don't get my toasted baguette. Waiter apologizes and brings back a roll of some type. I tell his this is not what I ordered. Another 5 minutes until I get cold toasted baguette. Strike 3. Our meals were OK. Nothing spectacular. The bill is brought right away (no delay on that). I give them my card and pay. Then someone comes out and turns the heater off for us. We were surprised. Then he came and took away everything from the table. "We're closed" he informed us, It was 2:45. OK, I understand you are closing but there is a nice way to warn people and to have them wrap it up, Not like this. Got to tell you I understand the "Dive" part of why they featured this restaurant..guess it was the service. read more

You can park on the top floor and walk down to the lower level to check in and wait for a table. This is a very popular breakfast spot, so expect to wait a bit. It's tucked away on the lower level and gets super packed on Saturday mornings. Lots of families come here with their kids. The waiting area is super congested since there isn't much space in front of the check-in desk. They'll usually direct you to a tunnel nearby to wait until your table is ready. We ordered the burrito, steak skillet, French toast, and the classic breakfast. Portions here are huge, so don't be shy about sharing something off the menu. Pets are welcome here, but you'll have to sit outside. Customer service was a little rocky at first, but it got better throughout our time there. Outdoor seating has umbrellas for shade, while indoor seating can feel pretty warm, especially with the morning crowds and all the coffee being made nonstop. A true Carmel local favorite From Scratch has been a local favorite for good reason. I've been coming here for over 20 years, and it continues to deliver great food, friendly service, and a welcoming atmosphere every time. The staff is always warm and attentive, and many of the employees have been there for years, some for as long as 3 to 10 years. That says a lot about how they take care of their team, and it shows in the way they treat their customers. The service feels genuine, consistent, and very local. The food never disappoints. Their fresh, made-from-scratch biscuits are a must-try, pun intended, and the eggs Benedict is another favorite. It's the kind of place where you can tell people take pride in what they're serving. The only thing to keep in mind is that on Saturday and Sunday mornings, the wait can get long, so it's best to come early. From Scratch is also very kid-friendly, which makes it a great choice for families visiting from out of town. And if you do arrive early, remember that Carmel mornings can be a little chilly. There's a reason we have a local magazine called 65°. Ask to sit inside unless you don't mind the cool coastal air. I was really surprised by this place, especially considering all the rave reviews it has received. Unfortunately, our experience was pretty disappointing. First off, it wasn't nearly as dog-friendly as advertised. They have just a few tables set aside for people with dogs, and they're stuck out of the way. Even though the patio was empty, it was misting when we visited, and almost all the tables were out in the rain. We ended up sitting in a corner under a bunch of spider webs. The food was just okay. I had the granola pancake, and my wife had the cinnamon roll pancake, which supposedly gets all the great reviews. However, she found it dry and not nearly as good as expected. We asked for extra butter, but our request was ignored until we were already finished with our meal. What really got to me was the $2.25 extra charge for real maple syrup. Seriously? And the butter was served in those tiny, annoying packets that you have to fumble with to open. When I got the $50 bill for two single pancakes, some bacon, and two drinks, I knew I wouldn't be coming back. This place did not live up to the hype at all. read more

At this breakfast/lunch eatery the food is good enough, but the shady patio where it's dog friendly isn't all that people ready. Service on the patio is done with a smile, but it's painfully slow outside, and customers get forgotten there. We have been. In foggy Carmel Valley that patio is ICE COLD most of the time. There are gas heaters on display there, but they've never been turned on during any of our visits. We've been here several times because it's the only café in the mall with breakfast service that allows dogs on the patio, but there are three other restaurants that serve dog owners starting at lunchtime in the mall and they turn on heaters and fireplaces. One of the other places up the mall even has a doggie menu. Friends with an itch for pancakes voted us onto this patio during their visits. The last time our little group was seated, forgotten, and left outside chilling to the bone, despite our coats, in the summer fog, with a sharply cold pacific breeze, and no heat. My girlfriend and I had the pleasure of dining here today, and it was a great experience. We arrived around 1:30pm, just before their 2pm closing time, and despite the limited time, the staff welcomed us with warm smiles and seated us promptly. It's evident that they truly value and appreciate their customers. For our meal, we ordered a cinnamon pancake, the From Scratch cheese bacon burger, and the breakfast skillet. Each dish was a masterpiece, cooked to perfection. The cinnamon pancake deserves a special mention - it's a must-try delight! The ambiance at From Scratch adds to the overall charm of the place. We first went to From Scratch on a Tuesday about 2 months ago. Our waitress ( a tall woman with her long hair worn down) took our order.. She Offered us no suggestions ore recommendations) and we never saw her again. However, we did see her talking, talking, talking to other staff members. In fact, we had to stop a older gentleman to ask for more coffee. Pretty bad. Fast forward to today.... We try again. And AGAIN get the SAME waitress! This time she appeared very busy, and neglected to check on us once we had placed our order. Luckily, the other woman that was working today, noticed we needed assistance and tended on us throughout the duration of our meal. While probably imagining the chef measuring the ingredients for the buttermilk pancakes, or the ripened blueberries that go within... We're fans of this spot since visiting after reading a review by George C. whose opinions we respect. This is just an excellent place to get a well cooked breakfast made with fresh ingrediants, plentiful portions, a fair level of creativity, all served up by outgoing friendly people. It's sort of out in the back of the Barnyard, at the foot of the valley, but the search is well worth it. Not cheap, but well worth the reasonable price given the excellent product. read more

Huge portions, friendly staff. The food was delicious. I'm not the biggest fan of the fried grits bites, but the Carmel omelette was on another level. The fresh ingredients really make a difference. My son got 2 pancakes, believe the server when they say the pancakes are BIG! We sat outside with our dog, they have heaters which was great and made a chilly morning bearable. Will definitely be returning next time we are in town. read more

Have been going to this place a few years. The service ia always GREATTTT! !! Today we went about 11,perfect time, just a few tables occupied, (usually really busy!!!) We ordered huevos rancheros with chorizo,one of there most POPULAR dishes! Nice flavors,egg cooked perfectly,very filings. Second,egg benidect with salmon & cheese grits, Good to the last bite!!! Probably the best breakfast restaurant in Carmel, CA. I had the Banana Walnut Pancakes and they were wonderful. My wife had the Eggs Florentine and the mixture of scrambled eggs, spinach, Swiss cheese and bacon was fabulous. The service was friendly and fast and they even gave me a refill to-go cup of coffee as I was leaving. It is hard to find in The Barnyard Shopping complex, but well worth the trip. read more

We managed to get a table for breakfast this morning.....the place was packed early....it is a festival weekend. Everything starting from the coffee, bread, pancakes, eggs, hash browns and bacon were great. The waiters were proficient serving the crowds and at the same time we did not feel rushed. I think we will have breakfast here every day for the next week of our vacation! read more

Went in because of their great reviews... Yelp did not let me down.... So So good, have been back once since and not a fluke, so, so good. and the service is great too, VERY attentive and friendly. Very hard to find, but get to the barnyard and keep walking you will see signs for them, they are downstairs in the back. Keep looking, they are worth it. read more

This is the place to be for brunch. Besides the wait and the busyness on the weekends, it is worth the wait to get a seat here. Service can be hit or miss here. Try the french toast, eggs benedict, build-your-own breakfast burrito, biscuits and gravy. You'll get an amazing plate of food no matter what you order, really. read more

The food was fresh, and flavorful. While the food was great, I think what makes this an amazing spot is the team. Each person was attentive, very friendly and made sure everyone had what they needed. I think we discovered a new spot and plan to be back. Oh and I love that they have a sign out front about providing a sandwich even if you can't afford one.
