We have been visiting Katy's for years as it was recommended to us by locals. A small family owned business, they have some of the most delicious and unique breakfast offerings (omelets) in the area. It's a small establishment and has limited indoor and outdoor seating (with heat lamps). If you do elect to sit outside I normally do wear warm clothing as the heat lamps can supply only so much warmth! My go to is the Lobster Benedict or the omelet, but this time I was hungry for the Ham and Cheese Omelet with some pancakes - it did not disappoint! The omelet came with lots of ham and cheese and the pancakes were very light and fluffy! The staff was attentive and it was not as busy as it usually is probably because of school starting (if you go during a weekend, I would go early as there can be a wait). We reluctantly decided outside and it was so cold even while under the heater. Ordered and got our food. My bacon was overcooked and inedible. I informed the server and he offered me fresh bacon strips. I accepted and they came out hot and cooked well. Just too salty. My eggs were ordered over medium and it came out very runny over easy. We ate outside which is small but was nice and peaceful and had the propane heater on. The food is good with good portions. I got the Kauai combo, the pancakes are huge and fluffy made with banana so had a really good flavor and the eggs had pineapple inside which i thought was a really good combo! I believe they are most known for their eggs Benedict's (they have a ton of variety) but my husband and I aren't fans so we ordered other items. I ordered the Kauai Combo - I did enjoy the pancakes. The pineapples in the eggs were interesting but not my favorite. My husband ordered the corned beef hash n eggs which were fine. What a hidden gem in beautiful Carmel by the sea. My friend and I arrived right at opening, we received the menus and had our drink order taken quickly. I ordered the ham and cheese omelette with a side of sourdough toast. The omelette was cooked perfectly, it was fluffy with the perfect amount of ham and cheese. The toast was toasted a little too much and the pieces were small. I normally have extra bread when I have breakfast, here I actually wish I had more. The menu is full with options, the only reason I didn't give five stars was because we go offered more water right before asking for the check, I could have used more water before. I'm rating this place a 4. I would have rated it a 5 except for two reasons, which I'll get to. I thought the food was great, I would have rated the food taste and quality a 5, but my wife didn't like it that much, she said the food tasted like it was cooked in old oil, so a 4 there. They didn't have decaf coffee. I think that's a big mistake. They also don't serve fruit. That's another big mistake. The service was ok, but it could have been provided more cheerfully and a little faster. The ambiance was quaint. So bottom line with all things considered I'll generously rate them a 4. Overpriced! The food was average, I had the Huevos Rancheros and the egg was running and my husband had the Hash dish and the meat was lukewarm. In addition, the coffee was $6 (I would pay it if it was a specialty drink but it was just plain coffee). As far as the ambiance, it was hard to ignore the dirty carpets. The service was excellent - very kind, attentive, and friendly, 5-star. We ordered a whole bunch of food: Bay shrimp benedict, Classic benedict, a cheeseburger, the Country omelette, Corned beef hash and eggs, a side of biscuits and gravy, a single french toast, and a cup of lobster bisque soup. Everything came out relatively fast. The food was fresh and very tasty. The corned beef hash is brisket that is wonderfully cooked and full of flavor. The biscuits are fluffy and delicious. Both of the benedicts were perfectly made and packed full of flavor. My nephew is a big eater but he couldn't finish the cheeseburger - he said it was excellent. We usually tip between 15-20%. Our total bill with the tip was $240. It is a bit pricy but worth the try and we will be back. I do recommend giving this place a try. It is a bit tight inside - they offer outside seating as well. I love the seafood options for omelettes and if tge calamari steak is on the specials menu(don't forget to check the chalk board) that is a perfect option ( so much more flavor than fried calamari!). The berry pancakes are fantastic as well( if there are more than four at the table get an order to share as a decadent side dish. My go to is the seafood special omelette resplendent with lobster, fresh crab and shrimp with large avocado chunks and jack cheese. And my research paid off! I had corned beef hash with 3 poached eggs. The hash was homemade and delicious and the eggs were cooked perfectly. The style of the hash was more of a shredded brisket with some veggies mixed in (I think there may have been some mushrooms in there). Not a lot of potato or other "filler"...mostly meat. Coffee was great, the scrambled eggs were a little over cooked for one person, but overall everything was tasty and filling. I like the old school interior decor and the outside seating has a great atmosphere underneath a huge tree. Hiccup was with the check. It was brought to our table with just a subtotal. First of all I know this is an iconic breakfast place while in Carmel. Well my hubby and I decided to have a breakfast here with our dog who's gentle and obedient. The staff asked us to eat outside which was fine under the heater but when she said " please don't feed the dog" when a piece of small toast fell off of our table- she snapped this remark. Well I understand establishment don't want to make a mess out people feeding their dogs there- she could've said it in in a more kinder tone.
