Omg the breakfast was so delicious! The pancakes were huge, but super yummy! I can't remember exactly what the hubby's breakfast was called, so sorry, but we loved it as well and the portions are enormous! The coffee was nice and strong, we loved everything and the service, fabulous, fast and friendly.
On a recent trip to the Bay Area we had a chance to swing by the Monterey Peninsula on the way south and visit with a dear friend. This "young lady" and I have been great pals since 4th grade, and that was quite a while ago. Ahem! She's lived in Carmel since the early 80's and knows so many great places to go. She recommended From Scratch as a good spot to meet for breakfast. On a foggy morning, we parked on the exterior of The Barnyard and took a meandering path to find the restaurant. I had actually dined in that space many, many years ago. I don't even recall what it was called at that time. The From Scratch iteration is wonderful! It's cozy and charming on the inside. I didn't end up taking many pix inside as they were so consistently full of patrons that I didn't want to intrude on people's meals. They also have an outdoor patio area, which is kept warm by heaters, but my friend had scored a table inside near the fireplace, and that turned out to be a perfect place. The menu has all the breakfast favorites, but with their own little creative twists. It was hard to narrow down to a final choice of what to order. Service was excellent throughout, and our server had a just-right sense of humor. The portions are enormous!!! Dear Hubby and I could have easily split one plate and would have gone away completely full. If one is going to order whichever dish you choose, unless you haven't eaten for a week, I would plan that you'll be taking away leftovers. Their homemade sausage patties were superb with a subtle sweet taste that complimented the savory meat. Thick, fluffy French toast was so delicious with real maple syrup to drizzle on top. DH fully enjoyed his biscuits and gravy. I don't know how he ate as much as he did, but I did do most of the driving in the afternoon while he napped off that breakfast! It was so divine to visit with my sweet friend in such a lovely atmosphere while eating delicious food. What a wonderful start to the day! I can see this being a draw for locals and visitors alike.
Food Ordered the Triple D Sampler (biscuits and gravy, with eggs and a cup of brisket chili) - yum! I think the chili was my favorite part - flavorful and good texture. The gravy for the biscuits and gravy was spiced well. My husband got the cinnamon roll pancakes and a side of a bacon. He was pleased with his meal. Pancakes were huge! Our lattes were pleasant - good presentation and flavor. Service Our server was patient, friendly, and informative. Ambiance The restaurant had an elevated diner vibe, nothing felt dated. I saw that they had a homemade mole for their breakfast burritos. Would definitely come back to try that out.
While visiting Carmel for a single night before hitting the road to explore Big Sur, I was on the hunt for a breakfast that would be open early, casual vibes, and (of course) delicious! My Yelp search introduced From Scratch Restaurant which satisfied all of my requirements but seeing that they were featured on Triple D is what sealed the deal. So I found myself (and my husband) inside the cozy diner shortly after they opened at 8am. If I could give half stars, I would give my experience a 3.5. The waitress had a lovely personality and was a pro at upselling (not mad at it). I ordered a single Granola Pancake and added a side of bacon and a fried egg. Thanks to the server's recommendation, I chose fresh blueberries and fresh banana to be cooked right into my pancake. It was the best pancake I have ever had!! Light and fluffy, little pockets of fruit bursting in my mouth, and the crunchy granola baked into the top! The servings are generous, so I ended up sharing some of my pancake with my husband and took a couple pieces of thick bacon to-go. My vanilla latte was served beautifully in a clear stein-style mug. It was quite hot, so I ended up taking it to-go since I did not drink much of it during my meal. However, after leaving, I realized the latte was burnt. My husband confirmed his black coffee also tasted burnt but he just kept adding sugar to it until he could drink it. I wish we had said something during the meal, but sadly the bad coffee brought my stars from a 4 down to a 3.5. I would definitely return for the pancake! If you need a cozy and casual diner breakfast, From Scratch is a fair choice.
Wow been a year. Could not wait for our return. Cool morning with our dog. Seated quickly on patio. Host turned on heater which was welcoming. Great open area with great ambiance. Server Nick was quickly out to our table. Bloody Marys ordered and quickly delivered. Food again was overloaded crazy plate. So what's wrong with that. Again another awesome experience. Looking forward to next year.
We were in town for a fun staycation anniversary trip vibe and decided to stop by this restaurant for a hearty breakfast meal before we enjoyed the rest of our day. I ended up ordering a veggie omelette with potatoes and sourdough toast. The portions were very generous, the food was well seasoned, I just knew I was going to look forward to my leftovers later lol. When we sat down, we were immediately offered water and coffee. Our food came out with a reasonable time and all of the staff was very kind and welcoming. this is a busy breakfast and brunch spot, it seemed that everyone was enjoying their meal. We sat outside on the patio area to enjoy our meal and coffee & definitely will stop again next time we're in the area.
Well, second visit to Monterey in past six months and of course this meant a return visit to one of our favorite restaurants, From Scratch! First of all, we lucked out because we were seated quickly and got the same amazing waiter, John. He always makes sure that we love our meals, he is friendly and attentive, the perfect waiter! Our meals were just as good this time as last. This time my husband and I both had omelets but with different sides. Let me just say, the portions are huge and will keep you full all day! The bacon is the best I have ever tasted anywhere and the cheesy grits were a unique and delish side. The eggs were so fluffy! I just love this place and wish I could go here every week! Whenever we go to the coast, this is a tradition now: breakfast at From Scratch!! Yummmm-o
We stop at this "mall" a few times a year on our way to/home from Camping in Big Sur. Had no idea this breakfast/brunch gem was hidden away & would definitely stop here again. Don't come here if you are in a rush or want something fast! The positives: fantastic dark roast coffee (free refills), huge meal portions, great range of choices, excellent ingredients, everything made from scratch, and pricing was good value in out opinion. The challenges: long wait time (we visited on a Sunday 11:30/primetime) -we waited 45-60 minutes to be seated & took a bit for our food to arrive but appreciated the coffee & endless refills (be aware its 5.50 per person). I ordered the skillet with Eggs scrambled & choice of 3 items. I chose bacon, onions & topped with sliced avocado served over potatoes & i had the homemade cheese biscuit which was a wonderful complement served with homemade marmalade. And i requested a side of pico de gallo (tasted homemade) that made it perfect. My hubby had the wrap which is the burrito with 3 items -he chose bacon avocado & jalapeno) and had a side of potatoes. The burrito had a mole sauce on it that might have been better served on the side. His potatoes tasted overly salty. Would definitely come here again to try the eggs benedict, or French toast, or pancakes or hamburger---so many good things passed by our table. If you are not in a hurry and want a very filling brunch this is your place. And if you have to wait for a table, looked like you could order mimosas and bloody mary's in the store while you wait.
We came to From Scratch on our way back to LA. I was excited to find that this place featured on the Food Network. We ordered the French toast and the From scratch breakfast roll. We thought the food was over all ok, I did wish the breakfast roll wasn't covered in the sauce. The food felt average but solid. Fairly generous portions. The place was pretty busy but we got seated quickly.
This place was excellent! Recently visited after getting a recommendation from an employee at the hotel we were staying at. Located in a shopping center that is full of shops and eateries. It's located inside on the lower level. The service that we received was very friendly and we felt cared for by the staff. Most importantly the food was PHENOMENAL. The portions were large. The dishes were flavorful and the ingredients tasted fresh. I can't wait to go back and visit whenever I'm in the area.
From Scratch is DELICIOUS!! Everything on the menu looks amazing and the portions are large. The ambiance is very nice and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. Shout out to Waylon who was able to make a simple modification to my fruit cup and is passionate about working here as well as very knowledgeable on the history of this restaurant and had great suggestions for those visiting from out of town! This is also a dog friendly restaurant with lots of tales outside. We had a wonderful experience and will be back again soon, thank you Waylon!

Service was great! Wait was about 30 minutes but it wasn't a big deal since the restaurant is located in a cute small plaza so we walked around. They were able to take down my number and text me when my table was ready. Masks are required, they do not hand out menus and I'm not sure if that's due to Covid-19 but there is a big chalkboard with their menu on it. There were heaters at each table, which was great. So glad we stopped by this restaurant for brunch today. Great way to start the day!!We had an unpleasant experience yesterday at a more central, touristy brunch spot where we waited for almost an hour for a table. Not the case here! It was busy inside but the outdoor seating was cozy & warm despite an unusually frigid Presidents' Day weekend. Truth be told - it's not the easiest restaurant to find but if you look at the Barnyard directory you will find it. It's on the lower level & you need to walk down a flight of stairs to get there! It's near a Pilates studio. The service was friendly & efficient. Even though it was busy, we got the menus & drinks order in quickly. Guy Fieri & Robert Irvine have featured the restaurant on DDD on the Food Network & you see pics of that on their menu! My husband couldn't resist the guy Fieri pick - the triple sausage on a biscuit with cheese grits & a choice of 2 eggs in a style of your choice. I couldn't resist & took a bite - it sure was yummy! My daughter got the cinnamon roll pancake (one is plenty, 2 if you are really hungry) & it really smelt & looked like a cinnamon bun! My son got the cinnamon French toast. He's the picky eater of the family but it definitely got his stamp of approval, as did the hot chocolate! I ordered the granola pancake. That too was delicious. There was a crunchy golden crust of granola on top & I opted for bananas inside which added lots of flavor. They even sell their homemade granola to customers! So overall - a big hit for all 4 dishes! Next time we are in the Carmel area - we will definitely be back! read more

I imagine the wait is typically ~30. Since I was dining alone I only had to wait ~10 minutes. The food was amazing and came out quickly. Great server who was super helpful. Clean restaurant with good food. I'll definitely be back with friends and family. read more

Graavvvyyyyy...omg, the country gravy is smackin! I seriously could eat it as if it was a thick creamy sausage filled soup. I also love the homemade sausage patty! I've been here twice while visiting from out of town and both times I've had a great experience with food and customer service. Know that the location is small and the food is well liked so with that, the wait list for a table can be long (@30-45mins) however, you can go grab a coffee, read the paper or take a little walk until you can be seated....its worth the wait in my opinion! read more

So glad we stumbled across this place on Yelp! We were staying at Villa Franca Inn in Monterey and wanted to grab brunch before heading back. It's a cute little place with indoor and outdoor seating located inside the shopping center. It was crazy packed on a Saturday so we waited about 1 hour and 15 minutes. I ordered the make your own skillet with red bell peppers, sausage and onions. It comes on a bed of potatoes and however you like your eggs. They also include your choice of toast or biscuit. We also ordered the cinnamon pancake and buttermilk pancake to share and that was so delicious! Also includes a side of fruit. Definitely worth to check this place out if you're in Monterey! read more

From Scratch is very yummy. My husband and I went here on our honeymoon, and wanted to try it again. We came at lunch time on a Tuesday. It was busy, but we were seated right away. The place is quite pricey. We didn't want to pay for kids meals that weren't all going to be eaten, so I ordered our three kids the cinnamon French toast. It came with breakfast meat (we chose sausage), and fruit. I ordered the corn beef hash with a side of red potatoes and the cheese biscuit. I am allergic to eggs, so I ordered them scrambled and split them up for the kids. My husband ordered the Monterey omelet with the fried cheese grits and sourdough toast. The French toast came with three sausages, perfect for our three kids. I asked for three small plates and split it up for them. It was more than enough, we had some French toast left. And with my scrambled eggs they all had plenty to eat. They all loved the French toast. The corn beef hash was delicious. It came on top of potato hash that added the perfect creaminess to it. The biscuit was good, but a little too dense and bready for my taste. It came with raspberry jam, which was amazing. My husband ordered the Monterey omelet but subbed the green onion for jalapeño. He said that it had too much chorizo and he could barely taste the egg. The sourdough toast was good. And the fried cheese grits were really amazing!! I had a cup or decaf coffee and it was very good. They also gave me a third refill in a to-go cup when we were leaving so I could take it with me. Our server was kind, but it seemed like the young busser paid more attention to us than our server did. read more
This perfect gem of a restaurant is tucked away in a shopping plaza with great indoor and outdoor seating. As you enter your greeted by a friendly Hostess and asked to take a picture of their full size chalkboard menu. Our service was top notch as they are very attentive and fast. The restaurant was very clean and they take all precautions when it comes to Covid. The menu has a lot of variety and the food is so good it attracted the likes of Guy Fieri and Triple D. The food comes out fast and hot and all the ingredients are super fresh. For all the vegetarians they do have vegetarian sausage which is very delicious. I ordered a MYO (make your own) omelette with avocado, cheddar, veggie sausage and mushrooms with red potatoes and an English muffin. It was so good I finished every bite even though the portions are very generous. We also ordered the Cinnamon roll French Toast and sausage. The French toast was very thick and comes with two slices. This is a must get.. Highly recommend!! Great food and wonderful service. From Scratch will now be our go to breakfast spot when visiting Carmel! read more

Wow...definitely a must go to on the next visit here and I am highly recommending. We came in here based my wife's researching and seeing it was on DD&D which we watch but didn't see this episode. It is in the way back of the center but good signs so you can find and they had a larger patio area for more seating but we sat inside. It was a full house even on a Tuesday morning, but were seated quickly and drink service of good hot coffee. We both ordered the make your own skillet meal but my wife has been going meatless recently and I am strictly a carnivore so we had a difference and couldn't split the food. I also ordered a side of biscuits and gravy. Food came quickly and I want to tell you that these were the absolute best biscuits and gravy I have had in years.......sooooooo gooooood. They not only had soft biscuits that had good flavor but sausage meat mixed into the gravy and a sausage patty topping the biscuit. Even my wife ate it...haha. They probably have a meatless option with Morningstar or something but honestly it was delicious and I am looking forward to the next trip up here. read more
Came here on a Saturday morning around 9am and it was already very packed but we were lucky enough to get seated right away. It was honestly a little bit tricky to find this restaurant though! The restaurant is located in such a quaint little shopping plaza that's very nice to roam around. A large variety of items to choose from and Guy Fieri actually came to this restaurant in the past too, how cool! I ordered the Extreme biscuits and gravy which was delicioussssssss. It did get a little salty but I was still able to enjoy my meal. You can really taste how fresh everything is, it also states on the menu that everything is made to order! I would definitely come back to Carmel JUST for the breakfast here. read more

We were staying in Monterey but wanted to check out Carmel and the food offerings there. We stumbled upon (via Yelp) From Scratch and decided to make this our breakfast stop. We had a group of four and waited about 20 minutes for a table (not too bad for a weekend day). When we sat down (because we are always THIRSTY), we each ordered coffee, a DRINK and water and they all came out quickly. Then we decided to have a breakfast appetizer (because that's normal) and ordered the Cinnamon Roll Pancake and it was DELICIOUS. We devoured it within two minutes of it being set down at the table. I ordered the Sausage Benedict and the eggs were perfectly cooked that came with grilled onions and mushrooms. I was pretty full halfway through it (because of the damn breakfast appetizer) but kept on truckin' because it was so frickin' good. One final note: the name of the restaurant is telling. Everything is made from scratch, so it can take a while for your food to come out. Be patient - it's worth the wait! read more
You know that hometown family diner that you know and love? From Scratch is that place! It's a Friendly little joint where you are greeted and offered coffee the minute you walk in but located in a bougie upscale Carmel shopping center. Don't let that fool you though- prices are definitely reasonable. I had eggs Florentine and my husband had a skillet made with their brisket chili. Their biscuits and pancakes are huge! The food was so good we went back a second day! If I can offer a tip, get there early when they open at 8:00 am because they do not take reservations and after 8:30 the restaurant is completely full with waiting list especially on weekends. Restaurant is small- only about 20 tables.They have a little store next door where you can shop while you wait that sells touristy coffee mugs, jewelry and Monterey stuff. If you're not local and think you may be lost trying to find From Scratch - you're not! Park on the side with Flanagans and Allegro then walk down the path, keep left, and follow your nose to true delightful, homey breakfast smell. Service was excellent. We were greeted warmly when we arrived & sat outside* since our Darwin Doodle was with us. *Note: outdoor seating is plentiful and they have special areas that are dog-friendly on the periphery. Hubby and daughter got hot chocolates which we're amazing (daughter offered me a sip). My coffee was just behind which was no big deal. Kudos to the hostess who overheard me say I'd warm up when they brought my coffee and brought it to me! I was content to wait, but that level of attentiveness is super awesome! Our server was fantastic and when I was faced with a choice of bread, leaning toward their homemade cheddar biscuit, his hearty recommendation sealed the deal for me. (BTW - get that cheddar biscuit. It was fabulous!) I had the skillet with their potatoes, covered in cheese and added bacon and mushroom. The two over medium eggs on top were a little more cooked than I prefer, but it was still delicious. Hubby got a chorizo scramble which he loved. Kiddo got the Cinnamon Roll pancake which was ginormous! She did her best to finish it. A great new breakfast/brunch place find for us. We look forward to returning! read more

Absolutely A MUST STOP while in Carmel. Hubby & I just drove from Oceanside all the way to Klamath 17hrs & decided to stop here (that's Guy Fieri for the recommendation!) ORDER THE FRENCH TOAST. As you will see our eyes are always bigger than our belly's. We love to try all the local favs. Pictured we have the Cinnamon French toast (TO DIE FOR), egg white Denver omelette, a side of biscuits and gravy, and I had the coconut pumpkin pancake (seasonal BUT MY GOODNESS DELISH!!) Also, our server he was so attentive & truly had the experience incredible. Great job to the owner, cooks and all the staff ! read more

Long wait, food & service was pretty good. I ordered corned beef hash w/ fried cheese grits (that was the best part of the meal). Boyfriend ordered the "triple D sampler" they forgot the brisket chili but boxed it up for us on our way out. Cheddar biscuits are good w/ fresh raspberry jam. All around good meal but probably wouldn't wait an hour for it again. read more

Great place for breakfast. Large servings and quick service. Coffee was good too! Got seated pretty quickly. Establishment is pretty clean, however some tables were placed close to others. Food and portions were great. Only concern was that waiters were pretty harsh on coffee servers and busboys. It's not a great way to to start your customers day by hearing them get down on them. Understanding the restaurant was pretty slammed, suggest keeping the bickering away from customers. read more

GREAT SERVICE from GERALD, THANK YOU!! My first time here today and I ordered 3 dishes to try. YUMMY!! I ordered the Juevos Rancheros, Triple "D" Plate & French Toast. All were yummy, but my favorite was the French Toast. It's perfect the way I love it! Coffee & Hot Chocolate were hot throughout my entire stay eating here. All staff is friendly and willing to serve with good attitudes. Service from Gerald was great!! I will be back again to try other dishes. Thank you!! read more

While enjoying a mini-vacation in Carmel, my wife and I wanted to have a nice breakfast one morning. We were traveling with our puppy dog, so choices become limited. After researching breakfast restaurants that allow dogs, we decided to try From Scratch Restaurant, located at the Barnyard. Although it was a bit difficult to find within the Barnyard at first, From Scratch was definitely worth it. Upon arrival on a Tuesday morning, we were immediately seated at an outdoor section designated for people with pets. Due to COVID, the menus are accessed via a QR Reader on your phone. Our server was Karen, who was very nice and helpful. My wife ordered the two Cinnamon Roll Pancakes and fruit, with a side of bacon. I ordered their own special take on Eggs Benedict, the Sausage Benedict Breakfast. The food arrived within ten minutes and looked great. We decided to split our meals to enjoy some of each. The Cinnamon Pancakes were nothing short of awesome. They looked like a flat cinnamon roll and tasted just like one too. You didn't even need syrup to make them great, but I poured some on anyway. The side of bacon came with three pieces and was thick and just right. The small cup of mixed fruit was light and refreshing. The Sausage Benedict was great as well. Two half English muffins topped with their own fresh made sausage patties, poached eggs, and a copious amount of hollandaise sauce. The Benedict came with an abundance of seasoned cut potatoes. The Benedict and potatoes were incredibly good. The flavor was perfect. We don't normally go out to breakfast but wanted to enjoy a treat. From Scratch knocked it out of the park. This place is definitely worth a trip to the Barnyard, especially if you are in the Carmel, Monterey, and Pacific Grove area. read more
